Opis:
The article describes two Cyrillic Gospels from the Kórnik Library: BK 11985 and BK 896. It presents the cultural context of their creation, as well as their history, content, illuminations and a short lexical description. Both codices were the result of a cultural and spiritual revival in the Orthodox Church in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Both of them were luxury, professionally made goods; their copyists were experienced specialists. BK 896 represents a higher level of artistry. In view of their lexical characteristics, the manuscripts can be classified as the third so-called Mount Athos-Tyrnovo linguistic redaction of the Gospel.

Opis:
In the 30s of 19th century the Ruthenian (Ukrainian) national movement in the Austrian Galicia was dominated by the dilemma of so called azbuchna vijna (Ukrainian „alphabet war”). The dispute among the national activists was about the change the Cyrillic script to the Latin alphabet adopted from Polish language. This paper presents the arguments of Greek-Catholic father Josyph Levytskyi, who was the most influential critic of the idea of latinization. He published his ideas in a small booklet that was distributed together with the Polish weekly „Rozmaitości” . Levytskyi stressed on long history of the Cyrillic alphabet and its uniqueness. Moreover, he claimed that new alphabet will not make Ruthenian literature more European and will only give the Poles another reason to call Ruthenian language a variety of Polish. On the other hand, Levytskyi did not appraised very much the usage of grazhdanka by the „Rus Trinity” and criticised the new orthography, which was based on phonetic principle. Key words: Latin, Cyrillic, Ukrainian, alphabet war, Levytskyi.

In the 1780s a multilingual dictionary was issued in Saint Petersburg, edited by the Ger- man Peter Simon Pallas (1741–1811). It was a comparative dictionary, containing almost 300 words in Russian and their equivalents in 200 languages and dialects from all over the world. Amongst those to be found within is Scottish Gaelic. This dictionary thus offers a brief snapshot of Scottish Gaelic from the 1700s seen through the prism of Cyrillic and this article aims to present some background history of the dictionary itself, and to show how Scottish Gaelic is presented in the text.

An information about presumable themes for the XVI International congress of the Slavic scholars in Ohrid (Macedonia) in 2008 were approved by the Presidium of the International Committee of the Slavic scholars in Opole (Poland), September 2004). A considerable part of this article is assigned to the epoch of Cyril and Methodius, the emergence of two Slavonic alphabets (Cyrillic and Glagolitic), the development of Slavonic written language in Macedonia with due regard for Ohrid Slavic culture. The Prior of the Holy Altar, the Head of the Roman Catholic Church Pope John Paul II in the epistle Slavorum Apostoli 2 VI 1985 attached the utmost importance to their activity not only for Slavic world but also for the whole Europe and also underlined that the beginning of the Christianity in Poland came into contact with Cyril and Methodius tradition. A Christening of Russia (988) was conductive to this process „becoming the part of our state, public, cultural, church life”(Richard Luzny). Polish archival and book collections contain the huge number of Cyril and Methodius manuscripts and the first typescript editions what creates highly auspicious conditions for the research work in the different fields of Slavic study.

The article aims to verify the thesis about the existence of one Uniate variant of the Church Slavonic language in the Ruthenian lands of the former Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. This thesis was presented in research on the Vilnius edition of Ecphonemata Liturgiey Greckiey from 1671 made by Ukrainian and Russian philologist – Anna Bolek. The analysis of the phonetics of the two editions of the text Ecphonemata Liturgiey Greckiey (Vilnius 1671 and Poczajów 1784), issued in Latin script, leads to a different conclusion. In two dialectal areas: Belarusian and Ukrainian, there were different variants of the Church Slavonic language used in the Uniate Church that corresponded to the local pronunciation / literary tradition.

Opis:
In this research, colophons are studied as an essential component of Cyrillic codices, which were created on the lands of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the Crown of Poland (later the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth). To write the study, the author analysed more than seventy colophons preserved in manuscripts from the collections of libraries in Lithuania, Poland, Russia, and Ukraine. The earliest colophon is contained in the “Lviv Gospel completed (full) aprakos” 1477, and the latest – the “Kotsuriv Gospel” 1600. The study of the text’s structure showed that these colophons belonged to six types with two subtypes, the classifying feature of which was the initial formula. A detailed analysis of the content of each colophon showed that the main components were the recording of the book’s title, the name of its copyist, its origin, time and place of publication, and mention of the customer or buyer. The analysis of the colophons illustrated the phenomenon of authorial statements of scribes, which consisted of explaining the motives of their work, an idea of their mission, instructions to readers, or a request to correct errors in the text. In the colophons 1594 and 1595 by Stepan Popovych, who was from Trushevychi village, the inadmissibility of stealing codices with an appeal to the Holy Scriptures, in particular the passage Hbr 10,31 with its author’s interpretation, was emphasised quite extensively.

Opis:
This article offers an analysis of religious texts published in the 18th century by a Basilian printing house in Supraśl (Sobranije pripadkov korotkoje, 1722, Kratkoje sosłowie nauki christijanskija, 1759). Works of religious nature used to be omitted in the study of Belarusian language and literature of the 18th century due to political factors, as well as scholarly stereotypes belittling their significance. The texts analyzed, written in the Belarusian language known as “prosta mova”, constitute a proof of the vivacity of the latter, and contradict the theories about the disappearance of the Belarusian written language in the 18th century. The phonetic features of the Belarusian language described in the article and reflected in these texts serve as a pretext to put forward several research postulates. Namely: a) the need for a detailed linguistic analysis of religious texts printed in Cyrillic alphabet (albeit not in the Orthodox Slavic language, but rather in prosta mova/Ruthenian) and a search for other literary works in order to analyze the language of this period; b) the need for an analysis of printed texts which reflect a certain usus rather than the language of individual authors; c) a thorough linguistic analysis of texts to indicate their dialectal basis and to define the trends (if any) affecting the subsequent formation of Belarusian language standards in its literary variety.
W artykule zaprezentowano druki religijne wydane w bazyliańskiej drukarni w Supraślu w XVIII w. Analizowane teksty, napisane tzw.-prostą mową, językiem Białorusinów, stanowią świadectwo żywotności języka i przeczą teoriom o zaniku języka białoruskiego w XVIII w. Opisane w artykule cechy fonetyczne języka białoruskiego,-odzwierciedlone w badanych tekstach, stanowią pretekst do wysunięcia postulatów-badawczych.

In the collection of manuscripts of the Princes Chartoryski Library in Cracow, there are two manuscripts (from the beginning of the 17th century) which are related, in academic literature, with the person of Orthodox monk, Iwan Wiszeński. The volumes, described in catalogues as Zlatousts, were to be brought by him directly from the Mt Athos. Codicological and textual analysis of the manuscripts shows that the tomes are not the Zlatousts, but two volumes (Lent and Paschal period) from an extensive collection of Byzantine and Slavic panegyrical works, known as Studios Monastery Homiliarium. Characteristic features of both the books show that the manuscripts were written on the area of the former Polish Republic (The Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth), thus they may only be copies of the originals brought from the Balkan region (not necessarily the Mt Athos). It is possible that Iwan Wiszeński was engaged personally in the delivery of manuscripts of this type, unpopular in Orthodox literature in the Ruthenian territory, but not of these particular ones.

The “Tale Afroditian” is one of the most popular Christian Biblical apocrypha in the Byzantine-Slavic literature. In the Medieval Cyrillic manuscripts, it is accompanied by a brief text entitled “Prophecy About Christ in the Pagan Temple of Apollo.” There are assumptions that both texts have a common origin, even though the Greek text of the “Prophecy” has not been found to date. Thanks to the analysis of several copies of the “Prophecy”, it is possible to reconstruct the common history of both apocrypha in the Church-Slavonic literature, which once again confirms durable relations of the literature of the former Ruthenia with the Balkans. Copies of both apocrypha from the handwritten “Bonarówka Code” are very helpful in re-tracing some unclear moments in the textology of the “Tale of Afroditian” and the “Prophecy About Christ”.

The largest collection of Cyrillic prints in Poland is held in the National Library. Works originating from Chernihiv typography constitute an important part of this collection. The first printing house in this region was founded by Cyril Tranquilion Stavrovetsky. He printed his own religious works. His activity was continued by Lazarus Baranovich, who also established a printing house to print his own works. He founded it at the Holy Trinity Monastery in Chernihiv, and after his death, typography thus continued to function at the monastery and contributed to the dissemination of secular and religious literature.
