Opis:
The aim of this study was to analyze the relationship between Big-Five personality traits, perceived self-efficacy (GSES) and dimensions of occupational burnout in accordance with Christina Maslach’s three-factor burnout model (emotional burnout, depersonalization, perceived lack of own accomplishments). Data collected among 271 teachers (82% female) aged 20–68 confirmed findings from previous research that four personality traits (Neuroticism, Extraversion, Agreeableness, Conscientiousness) are correlated with burnout and that they are significant predictors for all dimensions of burnout. In addition, it was shown that GSES plays a moderating role as a buffer that protects people with high levels of neuroticism from a sense of lack of own accomplishments. It was also found that GSES plays a mediating role for the relationship between Extraversion, Conscientiousness and Neuroticism and perceived lack of own accomplishments and that it is a suppressor for the relationship of neuroticism with emotional exhaustion. The results are discussed in the context of personality theories and their possible applications.

Opis:
The article is an introduction to the volume devoted to personality traits and their measurement. It consists of two parts. The first part presents two research traditions that use the taxonomy of five personality traits: the lexical tradition (using the term “Big Five”) and the psychometric tradition (using the term “Five-Factor Model of Personality”). Similarities and differences between these traditions are outlined and the basic elements of other models that have appeared in recent studies – such as the Big Six or the Big Two – are introduced in it. The second part of the paper presents selected issues of measurement, discussed in detail in several texts included in the current issue of Annals of Psychology. Special attention is drawn to differences between various questionnaires in the operationalization of the five traits as well as to the growing popularity of short scales for measuring personality traits. The paper also outlines problems involved in the measurement of personality traits and the psychometric instruments used.

Opis:
The paper is a review of current discussion on the Big Five model and new proposals of personality structure description. The discussion concerns three main claims of the Big Five model: (1) the claim about number of basic traits; (2) the claim about the organization of lower-level traits and (2) the claim about relations between the basic traits. Critique of each claim has led to a counterproposal that describes the personality structure in a different way. Critique of the first assumption is supported by the proposal of increasing to six number of basic traits in the HEXACO model (Ashton, Lee, 2001, 2007). Critique of the second assumption is supported by the proposals of different lower-traits organization. The Abridged Big Five Dimensional Circumplex (Hofstee, De Raad, Goldberg, 1992; Goldberg, 1999) and the model of 10 aspects located between the basic five traits and their facets (DeYoung, Quilty, Peterson, 2007) there are reviewed in the paper. The critique of the third assumption argues that the five traits are not orthogonal and the systematical relations between them can be explained by two higher-order factors (Digman, 1997; DeYoung, Peterson, Higgins, 2002) or even one General Factor of Personality (Musek, 2007; Rushton, Irving, 2011).

Opis:
The paper presents the Polish adaptation of the Ten-Item Personality Inventory (TIPI-P), which is designed to measure five dimensions of personality as described in the Big Five model. The items were translated into Polish from the original English version. The equivalence of the two versions was confirmed in a study conducted on a sample of bilingual students. A series of four independent studies (on a total sample of over 500 students) were conducted to verify the psychometric properties of the Polish version of TIPI. They proved acceptable test-retest reliability of TIPI-P after two weeks. As in the original version of the inventory, the internal consistency coefficients are relatively low. Correlations between TIPI-P and NEO-FFI as well as between self-rating and peer-rating confirm the convergent and discriminant validity of TIPI-P scales. The results of the studies suggest that the Polish adaptation can be used in scientific research conducted on student samples.

Opis:
Internet addiction has been identified as a major mental health problem, particularly among young nursing students. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between the Big Five personality traits and Internet addiction in this population. This study adopts a descriptive, quantitative, and correlational approach among 388 nursing students enrolled in a Higher Institute of Nursing Professions and Health Techniques in Morocco. The Internet Addiction Test (IAT), the Big Five Inventory (BFI) were used. A student-test was used to compare the differences in Internet addiction between different categorical groups. Pearson correlation was used to determine correlations between Internet addiction and personality traits. Linear regression analysis was performed to explore the effects of independent variable groups on Internet addiction. The overall prevalence of Internet addiction was 68.3% (AI > 30). There were significant differences in Internet addiction by age group (p = 0.001), gender (p = 0.004), grade (p = 0.003), and reasons for using the Internet (p = 0.004). Neuroticism (β = .493, p < .05) and extraversion (β = .479, p < .05) were positive predictors of Internet addiction, whereas agreeableness (β = -.461 p < .05) and conscientiousness (β = -.395, p < .05) were negative predictors. Personality traits are critical contributors when designing individualized intervention strategies that contribute to the prevention and reduction of Internet addiction in nursing students.

Uchnasta i K. Tucholskiej) a wybranymi wymiarami osobowości, mierzonymi: Kwestionariuszem Poczucia Koherencji SOC-29 A. Antonovsky’ego, Testem Przymiotnikowym ACL H. G. Gougha i A. B. Heilbruna oraz Inwentarzem Osobowości NEO-PI-R P. T. Costy i R. R. McCrae. Zgromadzone w toku badań wyniki 239-osobowej grupy studentów poddano analizie korelacji kanonicznej. Przeprowadzone analizy dały postawy do dokładnego określenia osobowościowych korelatów kompetencji w przeżywaniu czasu. W świetle prezentowanych badań kompetencje temporalne okazują się zmienną istotną dla diagnozowania adekwatności funkcjonowania i skuteczności działania jednostki.
The objective of research was to establish the range of interdependence between temporal competence (as measured by Temporal Competence Inventory developed by Uchnast and Tucholska) and selected psychological variables measured by Questionnaire of the Sense of Coherence (SOC-29) developed by Antonovsky, Adjective Check List (ACL) by H. G. Gough and A. B. Heilbrun, Revised NEO Personality Inventory developed by P T. Costa and R. R. McCrae. The procedure of canonical analysis was used to analyze the data collected during the study from a group of 239 students. It follows from the presented analyses that the way of experiencing time and the person’s attitude to time in its three dimensions remain in evident linkage to intrapsychic and interpersonal functioning. Therefore, temporal competences can be treated as predictors of efficient and adequate functioning.

A 2-year longitudinal study examined how dating app use (N = 82, 36 women) affects changes in personality (i.e., the Dark Triad and Big Five traits), and visual social media use (i.e., dating apps, Instagram). Dating app users were higher in narcissism and Machiavellianism after two years but not in the Big Five traits. Early time and sessions on dating apps were associated with more sessions on dating apps, more time on Instagram, and higher narcissism later. Men increased in narcissism, women decreased in extraversion, openness, conscientiousness, and increased in agreeableness. The use of dating apps affects personality into an antagonistic direction, especially women.

The aim of the present study was to investigate the relationship between positive orientation (PO) defined as a basic predisposition to perceive and evaluate positive aspects of life, the future and oneself and the Five-Factor Model of personality (FFM). Hypotheses postulated positive correlations between PO and extraversion, conscientiousness, agreeableness and openness; a negative correlation was predicted between PO and neuroticism. Two hundred Polish students completed the following measures: SES (Self-Esteem Scale, Rosenberg), SWLS (The Satisfaction with Life Scale; Diener, Emmons, Larson & Griffin), LOT-R (The Life Orientation Test - Revised; Scheier, Carver & Bridges) and NEOFFI (NEO Five Factor Inventory, Costa & McCrae). The results confirmed correlations between PO and extraversion, conscientiousness, and neuroticism; correlations with openness and agreeableness were not supported. According to canonical correlations, PO shows a clear affinity to the FFM.

Subjective Well-Being is related to the Big-Five and to Individualistic and Collectivistic beliefs of Polish adolescents. In the present study, we examined whether Individualism and Collectivism beliefs mediate between the Big-Five and Subjective Well-being among adolescents, young and middle-aged adults. Adolescents (N = 174, 36% men, aged 14–18), young (N = 254, 45% men, aged 19–24) and middle-aged adults (N = 252, 54% men, aged 40–55) completed the NEO-FFI, the Ind-Col20, and measures of Subjective Well-being. The three groups differed on all dimensions. Adolescents reported the highest Neuroticism, the lowest Agreeableness, Conscientiousness, the highest Individualism and Collectivism beliefs and lowest SWB. Among adolescents, SEM analyses indicated that Subjective Well-being was negatively related to Neuroticism and Agreeableness, positively to Extraversion, Conscientiousness, Horizontal Individualism, Horizontal and Vertical Collectivism. Among young and middle-aged adults Subjective Well-being was negatively related to Neuroticism and Horizontal Collectivism, positively to Openness, Conscientiousness, Horizontal and Vertical Individualism. Beliefs partially mediated the effects of traits. Relationships were different for cognitive and affective Subjective Well-being indices.

The article presents the Polish adaptation of Goldberg’s IPIP-BFM-50 questionnaire for measuring the five personality traits in the lexical tradition (Extraversion, Agreeableness, Conscientiousness, Emotional Stability, and Intellect). The adaptation procedure was carried out as a series of eight studies. Analyses were performed on a total of N = 7015 people aged from 10 to 83 (their mean age was 29 years). Reliability was assessed using Cronbach’s alpha coefficient. Factorial validity was verified in confirmatory factor analysis. In multigroup confirmatory factor analysis, measurement invariance between various research situations was verified. External validity was assessed by comparing the scores obtained using the IPIP-BFM-50 with NEO-FFI and NEO-PI-R scores. The results support the conclusion that the IPIP-BFM-50 is a measure with satisfactory psychometric properties, fit for use in scientific research.

Power in organizations creates interpersonal settings and lays the ground for designating individual roles and positions of superiors and subordinates. In such a context, influence tactics are situation-specific behaviors used to change the behavior of others and achieve organizational goals. The notion that power and influence can be based on personal or positional variables was used to design the framework of the present studies intended to describe how trait- and state-like variables are related to influence tactics and deinfluentization. The subjects were 250 Polish managers. Study 1 (n = 250) was undertaken to collect data about the influence tactics of Polish managers to fill the void in information in the field of social psychology in organizations. In Study 2 (n = 104) we correlated influence tactics with the personal sense of power. The results proved that the perception of having the ability to exert power over others was positively related to rational persuasion, apprising, and pressure. In Study 3 (n = 69) we investigated the relationships of influence tactics and deinfluentization with the Big Five and directiveness. The results showed that Neuroticism was positively correlated with pressure, legitimating, and coalition, but negatively with rational persuasion and consultation. Extraversion was positively correlated with rational persuasion, so was Conscientiousness. Agreeableness was negatively related to coalition. Directiveness was in a positive relation with pressure but correlated negatively with personal appeals. Deinfluentization positively correlated with Agreeableness and negatively with directiveness.

Objectives Although there have been studies linking personality to selected aspects of functioning at work, Polish literature reports a shortage of detailed analyses considering, e.g., specific professional groups or certain variables. The aim of our study was to explore the links between personality traits and emotional labor, work engagement and job satisfaction among service workers. Material and Methods The study was based on a cross-sectional, self-report survey of 137 workers representing different service industries in Poland. Each participant received a demographic data sheet and a set of questionnaires: NEO Five-Factor Inventory, the Deep Acting and Surface Acting Scale, the Job Satisfaction Scale and the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale – all in their Polish versions. Results A correlation analysis revealed numerous relationships between the examined variables. However, results of the regression analysis showed that only some personality traits were related with individual aspects of functioning at work. Neuroticism accounted for the phenomenon of faking emotions. Conscientiousness was significantly related to general work engagement, vigor and dedication. Agreeableness and neuroticism significantly predicted job satisfaction. Conclusions Individual personality traits account for various aspects of work functioning. Research on the personality of primary school teachers and on their level of competence in teaching migrant children, including their own migration experience and their attitudes toward training for better education of foreign pupils, was conducted in 2016, using Big Five NEO-FFI and a questionnaire constructed by the authors (PPNUC). The subjects work in a big Polish city and their school is attended by Ukrainian and Vietnamese migrant children; half of the teachers (called NU) have the migrant children in their classes, the other half do not (NN). The results have shown, among others, that NU teachers have higher extraversion scores than NN and that younger teachers have a more positive attitude toward training programs for educating migrant children.

The article analyzes the issue of teachers’ personalities in the context of the Big Five theory and the personality component of the creative attitude of nonconformism. The main research goal was to diagnose the current state of teachers’ personalities in the context of variables such as: type of school, years of work, level of career advancement, subject taught, and teacher’s sex. Robert R. McCrae and Paul T. Costa’s NEO-Five Factor Inventory (NEO-FFI) and the Creative Behaviour Questionnaire (CBQ III) were used in the research. The results obtained in a 258-person group of teachers aged 26–60 were analyzed. The statistical inference allowed the formulation of the following conclusions. Moderately intense neuroticism was found in primary and technical school teachers whereas the lowest level of neuroticism was determined in high school teachers. Neuroticism is statistically significantly higher in female teachers. Teachers of vocational subjects have significantly less openness to experience than teachers of humanities. A trainee teacher has a significantly lower level of conscientiousness than a qualified or appointed one. The research results can be used to improve the professional development procedures for teachers.
Przeanalizowano wyniki 258-osobowej grupy nauczycieli w wieku 26–60 lat. Przeprowadzone wnioskowanie statystyczne pozwoliło na sformułowanie następujących wniosków. Średnie nasilenie neurotyczności mają nauczyciele szkoły podstawowej i technikum, a najniższa neurotyczność występuje u nauczycieli liceum. Neurotyczność jest istotnie statystycznie wyższa u kobiet niż u mężczyzn nauczycieli. Nauczyciele przedmiotów zawodowych mają istotnie mniejszą otwartość na doświadczenie niż nauczyciele przedmiotów humanistycznych. Nauczyciel stażysta posiada istotnie niższe nasilenie sumienności niż nauczyciel dyplomowany i mianowany. Wyniki badań można wykorzystać do usprawnienia procedur rozwoju profesjonalnego nauczycieli.
