Opis:
It is very important for an aging society as well as for the elderly themselves that seniors are as active as possible in old age. Older activities bring a higher quality of life for seniors and save money for society. Today, the concept of active aging is an important part of coping with the aging process in developed countries. The work emphasizes the principles of active aging of seniors, based on the National Program of Active Aging for 2014-2020, while appealing to the availability, quality and financial sustainability of social services.

Opis:
One of the leading models of successful aging is the life-span model of Selective Optimization with Compensation (SOC) developed by Baltes & Baltes (1990). SOC strategy outlines the best adapting mechanisms to age-related changes and its usefulness was proved in many empirical studies. For the first time the present study examines how SOC is associated with subjective indicators of successful aging in Polish seniors. Three variables served as outcome measures of successful aging: positive emotions (measured by PANAS), satisfaction of life (SWLS) and absence of feelings of loneliness (Loneliness Scale de Jong Gierveld). All scales used were in Polish version. Polish adaptation of the SOC Questionnaire was accomplished by the first author. 80 elders (between 64–85 years old) participated in the study. The results indicate that there is a statistically significant positive correlation between SOC strategy and widely used measures of successful aging which confirms the data of previous authors and means that SOC strategy does not depend of socio-cultural context.

Purpose – The article presents a proposal for a measure of the similarity of regions in terms of the structure of the elderly population. Research method – Using the proposed measure, the similarity of population structures aged 60 and above was assessed for the regions of Poland in 2017, where the age groups: 60-74, 75-84 and 85 plus were defined as components of the structure. Results – The research results demonstrate that Poland’s voivodeships differ with respect to the structure of people aged 60 and above. The spatial polarization of the country with respect to the components of the structure of an elderly population can be observed. Originality /value – Identification of the regional differentiation of the situation in terms of the size and age structure of the elderly population can be helpful in planning activities within the silver economy policy adapted to the situation in each region.

The paper describes the state of population aging in Poland and one voivodeship (Kujawsko-pomorskie) in the early 21st c., as well as showing how the process will develop in the next future, limited by the beginning of the 2030s. Using the economic and biological age groups to describe the structure of popula- tion with respect to aging, we need to note that the shares of age groups are similar in the voivodeship and in the country, both today and throughout the Central Statistical Of- fice’s most recent population projection. The similar shares of the working age group and retirement age group in the analysed areas translate into almost identical potential support ratios for the country and the mentioned administrative unit and into their future trends. Population aging considered in the cross section of urban and rural areas makes it evident that the process consequences (e.g. for the labour market, the social policy) will affect the urban population more strongly than the rural population.

Opis:
Since aging is primarily the result of a failure of maintenance and repair mechanisms, various approaches are being developed in order to stimulate these pathways and modulate the process of aging. One such approach, termed hormesis, involves challenging cells and organisms by mild stress that often results in anti-aging and life prolonging effects. In a series of experimental studies, we have reported that repeated mild heat stress (RMHS) has anti-aging hormetic effects on growth and various cellular and biochemical characteristics of human skin fibroblasts undergoing aging in vitro. These beneficial effects of repeated challenge include the maintenance of stress protein profile, reduction in the accumulation of oxidatively and glycoxidatively damaged proteins, stimulation of the proteasomal activities for the degradation of abnormal proteins, improved cellular resistance to other stresses, and enhanced levels of cellular antioxidant ability. In order to elucidate the molecular mechanisms of hormetic effects of RMHS, we are now undertaking studies on signal transduction pathways, energy production and utilisation kinetics, and the proteomic analysis of patterns of proteins synthesised and their posttranslational modifications in various types of human cells undergoing cellular aging in vitro. Human applications of hormesis include early intervention and modulation of the aging process to prevent or delay the onset of age-related conditions, such as sarcopenia, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, cataracts and osteoporosis.

Introduction: In elderly patients the dizziness and balance disorders may be elicited by the central nervous system dysfunction on various levels, caused be aging process and the coexisting diseases. The aim of the study was to assess the efficiency of rehabilitation in elderly patients with dizziness and balance unsteadiness.Material and methods: Out of the 84 patients over 65 years, with central vestibular impairment diagnosed in videonystagmography VNG, 31 with dizziness and balance unsteadiness, were enrolled to the study. Otolaryngological examination, Tinetti test, Time and Go test (TUG) and Functional Reach (FR) tests were conducted in all patients. They were assessed twice before and after 2 weeks of vestibular rehabilitation (VR). Training sessions took place five times a week. Results: Statistically significant improvement in total DHI and 3 subscale were observed after therapy. As many as 70% of patients presented better outcome in the gait and stability tests - in Time and Go test (TUG) an average score of 15.3 seconds, in Tinetti test an average of 22 points (low chance to fall) and in the FR test 27 cm were observed. Conclusion: In elderly patients, vestibular rehabilitation is a method that significantly improves posture and gait stability. In ageing patients with dizziness and unsteadiness clinical, functional and objective tests could confirm diagnosis and monitor VR therapy.

longevity genes
Opis:
The genetics of aging has made substantial strides in the past decade. This progress has been confined primarily to model organisms, such as filamentous fungi, yeast, nematodes, fruit flies, and mice, in which some thirty-five genes that determine life span have been cloned. These genes encode a wide array of cellular functions, indicating that there must be multiple mechanisms of aging. Nevertheless, some generalizations are already beginning to emerge. It is now clear that there are at least four broad physiological processes that play a role in aging: metabolic control, resistance to stress, gene dysregulation, and genetic stability. The first two of these at least are common themes that connect aging in yeast, nematodes, and fruit flies, and this convergence extends to caloric restriction, which postpones senescence and increases life span in rodents. Many of the human homologs of the longevity genes found in model organisms have been identified. This will lead to their use as candidate human longevity genes in population genetic studies. The urgency for such studies is great: The population is graying, and this research holds the promise of improvement in the quality of the later years of life.

Opis:
Poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) is a conserved enzyme involved in the regulation of DNA repair and genome stability. The role of PARP during aging is not well known. In this study PARP activity was investigated in nuclear fractions from hippocampus, cerebellum, and cerebral cortex of adult (4 months), old adult (14 months) and aged (24-27 months) rats. Concomitantly, the free radical evoked lipid peroxidation was estimated as thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS). The specific activity of PARP in adult brain was about 25, 21 and 16 pmol/mg protein per min in hippocampus, cerebellum and cerebral cortex, respectively. The enzyme activity was higher in all investigated parts of the brain of old adults. In aged animals PARP activity was lower in hippocampus by about 50%, and was unchanged in cerebral cortex and in cerebellum comparing to adult rats. The concentration of TBARS was the same in all parts of the brain and remained unchanged during aging. There is no direct correlation between PARP activity and free radical evoked lipid peroxidation during brain aging. The lowered enzyme activity in aged hippocampus may decrease DNA repair capacity which subsequently may be responsible for the higher vulnerability of hippocampal neurons to different toxic insults.

Opis:
The study aims at statistical and spatial analysis of population ageing in Poland’s 2479 communes (LAU2 - Local Administrative Unit 2) as of December 31, 2014 based on quantitative data from the Local Data Bank, the Central Statistical Office of Poland. The paper presents the results of applying the following indices: the share of the old in the population, double ageing index and the ageing index by A. Sauvy. Findings prove that 9% of Polish communes are old and 91% are very old according to UNO classification. In Polish LAU2s the share of elderly people (65%+) in total population ranges from 7% to 39,3%, double ageing index from 2,9% to 20,8% and the number of the old per 100 young amounts from 25,3 to 306,1. Thus communes characterised by the lowest values of applied indices should be perceived as ‘the youngest’ among the old. The oldest communes accumulate in Eastern Poland, which makes it the oldest region in the country. That advanced ageing of the local population can be the main threat to the development of those communities unless balanced by the inflow of exogenous demographic potential.
Przedmiotem prezentowanej analizy jest starość demograficzna ludności Polski wg stanu na 31.12.2014r. Celem artykułu jest statystyczna i przestrzenna analiza zróżnicowania starości demograficznej populacji lokalnych w 2479 gminach (LAU2) w Polsce w oparciu o ilościowe dane wtórne z Banku Danych Lokalnych GUS. W badaniu wykorzystano wskaźnik udziału ludności w wieku starszym w ogólnej liczbie ludności, wskaźnik podwójnego starzenia oraz wskaźnik starości demograficznej według A. Sauvy.

Introduction. Physical activity is known to be an important factor influencing health throughout human life. This issue has become crucial for public health due to the aging of the population in both developed and developing countries. Aim. is to present a literature review on the forms of physical activity undertaken by the elderly, as well as on issues related to physical activity and the population aging. Material and methods. The study was prepared on the basis of a review of Polish and foreign literature. The following databases and data sources were used: EBSCO, ScienceDirect and Google Scholar. An additional source of data were the websites of the Central Statistical Office. Strictly defined key phrases were used during the collection of literature. The work has been divided into thematic subsections on the aging of the society, the impact of physical activity on health and the main topic, i.e. forms of physical activity selected by the elderly. Analysis of the literature. The number of elderly people in Polish society has increased by almost 3.7 million over three decades. Therefore, an important topic is prophylaxis aimed at increasing the number of days in good health, largely covering the broadly understood activation of the elderly. The available data indicate that only 12% of elderly people undertake physical activity once a week. The most common form of spending free time actively is walking (as many as 73% of people in this population declare this form of physical activity in one of the presented studies). Conclusion. Organized forms of physical activity are undertaken much less frequently by the analyzed age group mainly due to financial limitations and limited availability of sports infrastructure

The development of relationships between young people and the generation of the grandparents must be accompanied by a sense of solidarity and the need to share experiences, especially in the family circle. In this way, young people are slowly gaining experience in finding thread of understanding and creating relations with other people from the atomising population. Mutual understanding and keeping good relations between the generations also prevents the isolation and marginalization of the older generation; then the young people do not see any interest to „help” them in this. Today we can observe with concern how the culture of the nations living with the present moment is getting exhausted and disappears because the individual gradually is losing its connection with family members and the roots of its own history. After all, the older people are able to offer invaluable assistance to young people, they can be and should be the trustees of the past and all these things in order to prevent a young generation from forgetting traditions, customs, art, religion, music, culture, and crafts of their fathers.
