Opis:
In elementary education, books and the messages they put across determine the way in which children perceive the world around them. Therefore, reading has become a tool of raising and educating the youngest children in the course of remote learning. The collection of obligatory books for classes 1–3, suggested by the Minister of Education, touches upon difficult issues related to contemporary life and children’s experiences in a limited way. The article presents obligatory reading taking into account a historical perspective and the latest developments that have inspired an open project “Alternative Obligatory Reading” initiated by Towarzystwo Inteligentnej Młodzieży (Association of Intelligent Adolescents), BUKBUK website and EDICO Foundation.

This paper describes the popularization of the Italian pedagogical thought in Polish textbooks about the history of education in general. It has shown that the authors of the textbooks gave a lot of information about the Italian school system and education and presented profiles of outstanding Italian educationalists, e.g. St John Bosco or Maria Montessori. This paper indicates that in the past centuries Poles were open to Italian intellectual currents, academic trips to the Italian Peninsula, and education at local universities. Polish textbooks about the history of education were popular (in the 20th c.) and still are an important source of knowledge about the history of Italian education. For the purposes of this paper, the contents of the most representative and popular textbooks have been analysed.

The paper presents how important for the history of Polish education were: Ogólnopolski Zjazd Oświatowy (the All-Poland Education Convention) in Warsaw (of April 1919) – called the Teachers’ Sejm, the 1st Pedagogical Congress in Poznan and the 4th Pedagogical Congress in Warsaw (of May 1939). The aforementioned convention and both congresses played a significant role in the development of educational thought and practice in interwar Poland. The scope of the issues discussed during sessions was large. It covered issues regarding the school system and the school administration, preschool upbringing and other levels of education including higher education, vocational schools, teachers’ education and teachers’ pragmatics, nonschool education, school and physical education hygiene. Resolutions and motions adopted at Ogólnopolski Zjazd Oświatowy (All-Poland Education Convention) in Warsaw, in April 1919, provided grounds for work on developing a democratic national education system. The main issues of the Congress in Poznan, held on 8–10 July 1929 during the General National Exhibition in Poznan, were referred to also during sessions of consecutive pedagogical congresses organised by the Polish Teachers’ Union: 2nd Pedagogical Congress (in Vilnius, on 4–8 July 1931) and 3rd Pedagogical Congress (in Lvov on 17–21 June 1933). Sessions of the aforementioned 4th Pedagogical Congress in Warsaw were held in May 1939, in special circumstances, when a threat from Hitler’s Germany reached its apogee among the Polish society, including teachers. Resolutions of the 4th Congress included the programme of democratic transformations of the national education system characterised in many aspects even with an explicit social radicalism. They provided broader access to the university education for the youth from farmers’ and workers’ families, develop special schooling and extend the school obligation for blind, deaf, mentally disabled and “morally neglected” children, develop adult education, implement education for primary school teachers only at a university level.

The official reception of the conciliar legislation in medieval Poland was greatly influenced by the papal legates, ambassadors endowed with papal authority, who brought conciliar canons to the country ruled at the time by the Piasts and made them public at councils convened with the participation of papal legates, closely monitored the observance of Canon Law and its scope expansion, concurred statutes of Polish provincial and diocesan councils, approved or rejected nominations of bishops, etc. They also acted as intermediaries in personal interventions of popes in their involvement in the functioning of the Church in Poland. Their duties also included inspections in dioceses. Visits of papal legates in Poland were relatively frequent and their main goal was to enforce and implement ecclesiastical reforms in the country. In some instances, a strict relationship between a stay of a papal representative in Poland and the process of the creation and spread of schools is clearly observable. The article examines source accounts concerning the visits of papal legates in Poland, as well as analyses the available statues of legate councils in terms of the provisions included in them regarding education of representatives of the clergy and laymen alike.

Opis:
The article is devoted to the history of artistic educational system in Warsaw in the inter-war period. The author analyses the methods of teaching the students of applied arts how to insert graphic elements in books. The following institutions are taken into account: Miejska Szkoła Sztuk Zdobniczych i Malarstwa, Warszawska Szkoła Sztuk Pięknych, Doświadczalna Pracownia Graficzna operating in Salezjańska Szkoła Rzemiosł, Szkoła Przemysłu Drukarskiego and the W. Gerson Szkoła Sztuk Pięknych. The abovementioned public and private artistic schools followed varied educational programmes – from a three-year vocational school specializing in arts to an academic level. The educational concepts were connected with the recognition of an important role of applied arts in social life, also in the aspect of visual culture. A well-developed artistic educational system made Warsaw an important printing centre.

Opis:
1519 was a special year for the city of Poznań, owing to the foundation of a new school, the Lubrański Academy. It was the first school of humanities in Poland to follow the best models of Renaissance education and employed illustrious teachers like Krzysztof Hegendorfer and Benedykt Herbest. In the 16th century, the Academy was considered a rival of Krakow University; ultimately in the early 17th century, the Academy was affiliated with the University. As a result of the affiliation, the Poznań school enjoyed stability, a group of experienced teachers and a curriculum recognized by the society. The curriculum stood out in Poland by its inclusion of practical preparation for performing various political functions, especially in the field of law, and, as in other educational institutions, by preparing young people for cultural life in the country. Its relations with Krakow University also had drawbacks: during the Enlightenment reforms of the education system, the Lubrański Academy adopted a conservative and reactionary position. Despite this, the authorities managed to introduce several modern solutions, especially in the realm of teaching modern foreign languages.

Opis:
W artykule omówiono przedsięwzięcia w zakresie edukacji prawniczej w Księstwie Warszawskim (1807–1815), a więc w fazie przejściowej między państwem feudalnym i nowoczesnym. Wobec współistnienia przepisów z kilku porządków prawnych, różnego stopnia przygotowania pracowników administracji i wymiaru sprawiedliwości oraz konieczności sprawnej implementacji napoleońskiego prawa, instytucjonalne kształcenie kadr okazało się niezbędne. Trafnie ocenił tę sytuację minister sprawiedliwości, współorganizując kursy prawa, a następnie Szkołę Prawa i Nauk Administracyjnych.
The article deals with legal education in the Duchy of Warsaw (1807–1815), which was a transitory period between a feudal and modern state. The urgent need for institutional education of a state personnel resulted from existence of legal provisions stemming from several legal orders, divergence in qualifications of personnel in administration and judiciary, as well as a necessity for efficient implementation f Napoleonic law. Those circumstances were precisely diagnosed by the minister of justice. He initiated courses of law followed by the School of Law and School of Administration. As the Duchy’s territory was enlarged, legal teaching had place also at the university in Cracow. It seems that although the state existed for only a short period, a more or less cohesive governmental concept of legal education’s role existed. It was to serve mainly the development of the state and this utilitarian goal dominated. It is worth reminding that those first Polish endeavours in the field of modern legal education took place at the time of a public finance crisis. Although majority of income was devoted to military needs and many projects were put off until later, authorities noticed that for an efficient governing of a state a well-educated personnel is needed. At that time this belief was not common.

The history of the development of music (artistic) education in Poland is little known. The literature in this field is also scarce. Therefore, it is worth enriching pedagogy with problems related to educating young people through art, including music. It is also necessary - as I think - through pedagogical and historical research, to create a growing knowledge of the history of music education, its tasks, goals and didactics. The whole process of the development of music education is located in the educational policy of Poland and used, particularly after 1945, to satisfy and reduce social tensions. The problems formulated in this way will be also presented in the further research cycle.

The 19th century was named the century of a child. The knowledge of a child, his developmental phases, needs, and interests was expanded together with the increase in the knowledge of biology and human psychology. The child was understood as a value itself who has a right to have basic needs fulfilled as well as to get appropriate conditions of development and health care provided. In connection with it, various initiatives were undertaken in a lot of European states aiming at the creation of optimal conditions of physical and psychological development for children. Controlling children’s health condition and hygienic as well as health education became popular. New ideas also reached the territory of Galicia. The hygienic movement developed in its area, which doctors, hygienists, and teachers were involved in. They widely popularised health issues and different forms of health education of children and the youth among the Galician society. As a consequence, the children’s mortality and a morbidity rate decreased and the sanitary and hygienic conditions at schools improved.

Additionally, the author of the article gives reasons why the regional studies are becoming more and more popular. One of the reasons, apart from globalization phenomena and the uniting of Europe, is the methodological “revolution” in the field of social sciences, which has significantly altered the research perspective of historians.

Aim. The purpose of the study is to reveal the cognitive potential and limitations of causal analysis in historical and pedagogical research and to consider alternative methods of explaining historical and pedagogical facts. Methods. Methodological significance for the study were the principles of historicism, objectivity, historiographical tradition, taking into account the totality of facts. To implement the goal a set of theoretical methods was used: analysis, synthesis, comparison, generalisation, and systematisation of scientific positions, historical-genetic, historical-comparative, historical actualisation of the problem. Results. The essence of causality as one of the most important forms of interconnection and interdependence of phenomena and processes of being, expressing a special genetic relationship between them, reveals the specificity of functional and stochastic (random) causality. Historical forms of determinism were characterised: classical (linear), non-classical (non-linear) and neoclassical (fractal). Conclusion. The search for monocausal determination in the study of historical and pedagogical processes seems unproductive. To get a more complete and reliable picture of the cause-effect relations the causal analysis should be complemented by teleological analysis, which will make it possible to find out not only why, but also for what purpose certain actions were carried out. Only in this case is it possible to provide scientific and objective historical explanations and interpretations, the adequacy of understanding of historical and pedagogical facts, to find ideas and meanings in the past experience, which will help to solve contemporary educational problems, to predict the development of education in the future.

Opis:
Most of articles on patronage in Greater Poland from the 16th to the 18th century concerns a direct dependence between the patron and the client. Thus, the present work concentrates on a specific kind of patronage – scholarship foundations, which are only briefly mentioned in historiography. Some of them are not known. “Fundatio orzelkoviana” serves as an example here to show the need for detailed relevant case studies to supplement the available data. Founded by Marcin Orzeł in 1566, the foundation existed for many years and helped young people to achieve academic education. Ius patronatus and control of the foundation was assigned to the Catedral Chapter of Poznań. Admittedly, this Chapter was interested in keeping the foundation in good condition, e. g. by being aware of economic and financial factors influencing the foundation and by carrying out the recovery in debts, be it rents or fees. The source material for the present discussion comes from the Main Archive for Poznań Archdiocese (mainly the acts of the Cathedral Chapter of Poznań, Consistory Court and the canonical visitation of Bishop Tholibowski).

Opis:
Legal history in Poland is imperiled by a few threats. One of them is a model of the university education, promoted by the heads of faculties, which is devoted to strictly legal subjects. It may happen, that historical subjects will be eliminated or vastly limited in the course of the implementation of this model. Such kind of pressure inclines legal historians to emphasize their utility to contemporary legal science. However, it is worth noticing, that there are different dangers that lie in wait for Roman law and for Polish legal history. Basing instruction upon incomplete sources in showing a distant genesis of contemporary legal institutions causes an excessive simplification, which is a serious threat to the reliability of scientific research. The Polish legal history researcher will be helpful to a specialist of contemporary law only occasionally and in most of those rare cases his research will be used to point out the birth of a certain legal institution in Polish law. Another threat to Polish legal history is an intensive interest in mostly recent history. Although, after years of censorship in the state of real socialism, this situation is intelligible, as it resulted in abandoning the research of old-Polish times, nowadays conducted by only a few scholars. As far as the group of Romanists is concerned, they tend to indicate the Roman roots of almost all past, present and future legal institutions. However, this is cannot be done when applying all rigors of scientific research. A drop of the scientific level of publications may be observed as well. Authors do not investigate sources of the practice of the law, the use of legal history literature is insufficient and the publications of historians of other specializations are used only to a minimal degree. Legal historians in Poland have to deal with these main problems, if they hope for the further development of their discipline.
