Opis:
Purpose: of this paper was to analyze the influence of the basic parameters of laser welding (i.e. laser beam power and welding speed, as well as energy input) of butt joints of the 2.0 mm thick stainless steel AISI 304 sheets on the weld shape and joint quality. Design/methodology/approach: The preliminary trials of simulated laser welding by melting the austenitic stainless steel sheets (the so called bead-on-plate welding), as well as the welding of the test butt joints, were carried out using the high-power diode laser (HPDL) ROFIN DL 020, without the additional material (the technique of autogenous welding). A crucial parameter that determines both the mechanical properties and the corrosive resistance of a joint (the region of a weld and HAZ - heat affected zone) in the case of stainless steels with austenitic structure is energy input, which should be kept at a minimum, and at the same time full penetration and a proper shape of the fusion zone should be ensured. The investigations included the macrostructure and microstructure observations by light microscopy, researches of mechanical properties in a static tensile test and also microhardness measurements made by Vickers method. Findings: The results have shown that it is possible to provide a proper shape of the weld of fine-grained structure and narrow heat affected zone, but it requires careful selection of the welding parameters, especially a low energy input. The microhardness measurements showed that the in case of welding the butt joints using the high-power diode laser in HAZ area a slight increase in microhardness to approx. 185HV0.2 compared to base material (160-169HV0.2) and a decrease in microhardness in the fusion zone (FZ) to approx. 140- 150HV0.2 have been observed. All welded sample broke from the joint during the testing at tensile stress between 585 MPa and 605 MPa with corresponding percentage elongation in the range of 45-57%. It can be found that the joints strength is not less than the strength of the base metal of 2.0 mm thick AISI 304 austenitic stainless steel sheet. Research limitations/implications: Studies of the weldability of stainless steels indicate that the basic influence on the quality of welded joints and reduction of thermal distortions has the heat input of welding, moreover the highest quality of welded joints of austenitic stainless steel sheets are ensured only by laser welding. Practical implications: The laser welding technology can be directly applied for welding of austenitic steel AISI 304 sheets 2.0 mm thick. Originality/value: Application of high power diode laser for welding of austenitic stainless steel AISI 304.

Opis:
The influence of sandblasting on surface and subsurface of stainless steel is investigated using variable energy positron beam (VEP), positron annihilation spectroscopy (PAS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Samples of stainless steel were blasted using 110 μm particles of Al2O3 under different pressure and time duration. In the case of sandblasting for 90 s, the reduction of positron diffusion length depending on the applied pressure was observed. Sandblasting during 30 s leads only to the reduction of positron diffusion length to about 60 nm for all samples. Positron lifetimes close to 170 ps measured using positrons emitted directly from the source point to the presence of vacancies on the dislocation lines. SEM and AFM images show that surface roughness depends rather on pressure of sandblasting than time of exposition.

Oxidation of erosion products was studied by means of the Mössbauer spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction methods when the strip of stainless steel was cut with the laser. Different content of wustite and chromium doped magnetite $Fe_{3-x}Cr_{x}O_{4}$ was found in the samples of erosion products depending on the place where the erosion products were collected in relation to the cutting slot. Conversion electron Mössbauer spectroscopy data showed that more magnetite was found at the surface while wustite distributes in the whole volume of particles of erosion products.

Opis:
Duplex Stainless Steels (DSS) and Super Duplex Stainless Steel (SDSS) have excellent integration of mechanical and corrosion properties. However, the formation of intermetallic phases is a major problem in their usage. The mechanical and corrosion properties are deteriorated due to the presence of intermetallic phases. These phases are induced during welding, prolonged exposure to high temperatures, and improper heat treatments. The main emphasis of this review article is on intermetallic phases and their effects on corrosion and mechanical properties. First the effect of various alloying elements on DSS and SDSS has been discussed followed by formation of various intermetallic phases. The intermetallic phases affect impact toughness and corrosion resistance significantly. Their deleterious effect on weldments has also been reviewed.

Opis:
The broad range applications of Ultra-Fine Grained metals is substantially limited by the lack of a welding method that allows them to be joined without losing the strong refinement of structure. From this point of view, the solid state welding processes are privileged. Friction welding tests were carried out on UFG 316L stainless steel. A joining process at high temperature activates the recrystallization, therefore the friction welding parameters were selected according to the criterion of the lowest degree of weakness due to recrystallization in the heat affected zone. In order to characterize the structure of basic material and selected areas of the obtained joint, were performed SEM, TEM and metallographic examinations in terms of hardness and range of softening of the material and tensile test. Despite the short time and relatively low welding temperature, results of the test by scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy confirmed the loss of the primary ultrafine structure in the Heat Affected Zone of welded joint.

Opis:
This work deals with the simulation of the growth kinetics of the $(FeB//Fe_2B)$ bilayer and the diffusion zone on a substrate of AISI 316 stainless steel exposed to the powder-pack boriding process, in the temperature range of 1123-1273 K and a time duration ranging from 2 to 10 h. The developed diffusion model employs a set of mass balance equations at the three growth fronts: [$(FeB//Fe_2B),$ (FeB/diffusion zone) and (diffusion zone/substrate)] under certain assumptions, including the effect of the incubation times during the formation of iron borides and the diffusion zone. For this purpose, a computer code written in Matlab (version 6.5) was created to simulate the boriding kinetics. A good concordance was obtained when comparing the experimental parabolic growth constants taken from the literature and the simulated values of the parabolic growth constants: ($k_{FeB},$ $k_1$ and $k_2$). Moreover, the present model was also used to predict the thicknesses of the $FeB$ and $Fe_2B$ layers and the diffusion zone thickness at various treatment times and boriding temperatures. The simulated values were in good agreement with the experimental borided layers thicknesses.

The influence of organic additives on the process of surface electropolishing of AISI 304 type steel was determined. Additives were selected in initial potentiodynamic tests pursuant to the plateau analysis on the current/potential curves. The assessment of the operational effectiveness of additives consisted in determining the relationship between surface gloss after electropolishing and the mass loss of the sample and in determining surface roughness. The applied electropolishing bath consisted of a mixture of concentrated acids: H3PO4  and H2SO4 and the following organic additives were used: triethylamine, ethanolamine, diethanolamine, triethanolamine, diethylene glycol monobutyl ether and glycerol. The best electropolishing result, i.e. low roughness and high gloss of stainless steel surface with a relatively low mass loss of the sample at the same time were obtained for baths containing triethanolamine.

Crystal structure and phase composition of stainless steel substrates (AISI 304 type) was studied and it was found that they adopted the cubic symmetry. The calculated elementary cell parameter for the mayor Fe-Ni phase (weight fraction 99%) was a = 3.593 Å, whereas the mean grain size was = 2932 Å. Morphology of the stainless steel substrate surface was studied with profilometry. Mechanical properties of the stainless steel substrates and stainless steel substrates coated with ceramic layer of barium strontium titanate were studied with microhardness tester. For measurements performed according to the Vickers method the average microhardness was found HV = 189 or HV = 186 for the “in-line” and “mapping” measurement pattern, respectively. The sol-gel method was used to coat the surface of the stainless steel substrate with a thin ceramic layer of the chemical composition Ba0.6 Sr0.4 TiO3 . It was found that the stainless steel substrate covered with sol-gel deposited ceramic coating exhibited the average hardness within the range HV = 217 up to HV = 235 for loading force F = 98 mN and F = 0.98 N, respectively. The Knopp method was also used and it was found that the stainless steel substrate with Ba0.6 Sr0.4 TiO3 coating exhibited hardness HK = 386.

Opis:
Surface morphology, one of the various physical properties modified by ion beam irradiation, is usually characterized by well known and very often investigated surface topography and surface roughness. The paper presents two additional aspects of surface morphology modification (called by the author: profile variability and surface morphology arrangement) that seem to be good complementary indicators of morphology changes. Surface micro- and nanotopographies were observed by means of scanning electron and near-field microscopes. High quality profilograph and atomic force microscope were utilised to measure main selected roughness parameters (based on the well known surface profiles). To detect any profile shape alteration during ion beam bombardment fractal analysis was used, and especially fractal dimension D that can give information about a rate $p_{v}$ of profile shape variability. Surface morphology arrangement, i.e. a question whether it is random or determined, was studied with the use of frequency plots resulting from harmonic analysis of profiles. Surface topographies, selected roughness parameters, fractal dimensions and frequency plots relating to stainless steel of 1H18N9T (made in Poland) bombarded with perpendicular (Θp = 0°) as well as very inclined (Θp = 85-87°) beam were examined. Low energy (0.8 keV) broad argon ion beam and neutralized narrow argon or krypton ion beams (up to 6 keV) were used in the experiments.

Opis:
Laser-generated surface patterns provide the means for local mechanical interlocking between the joined materials, tunes the wettability of surfaces that come in contact, and generally are the main factor for bonding strength enhancement, especially between dissimilar materials. This paper presents the influence of different patterning overlays generated with a pulsed laser on the surface of stainless-steel sheets. For all experiments, an overlapping degree of 90% has been chosen between three different patterns, while the engraving speed, pulse frequency and number of passes have varied. The textured surfaces’ morphology was assessed through optical microscopy, and the roughness of the surfaces was correlated with the corresponding experimental parameters. The results have indicated promising insights for joining stainless steel to plastic materials, which is otherwise difficult to assess through usual welding techniques.

The annealing studies revealed creation of defects in the temperature range between 450C and 650C pointing out the reverse transition of α' martensite to austenite. This is confirmed by magnetic susceptibility and microhardness measurements.
