Opis:
Zbiorowiska łąkowe naturalnych terenów zalewanych w dolinie Warty z biegiem lat ulegają przeobrażeniom florystycznym spowodowanym obniżeniem poziomu wód zalewowych i mniejszą liczbą zalewów. Celem badań jest ocena zmian różnorodności florystycznej zbiorowisk nadwarciańskich łąk zalewanych. W pracy wykorzystano wyniki wieloletnich badań geobotanicznych prowadzonych na łąkach zalewanych w środkowej części doliny Warty, w okolicach Konina i Rogalina.
Meadow communities of natural flooded areas in the Warta River valley have undergone floristic transformations in the course of years due to lower levels of flood waters and smaller numbers of inundations. The purpose of these studies was to assess floristic diversity of flooded meadows situated along the Warta River and to ascertain their landscape value. Performed studies explored the results of a long-term geobotanical survey carried out on flooded meadows situated in the middle part of the Warta River valley in the neighbourhood of Konin and Rogalin. The assessment of diversity involved the Shannon-Wiener index, total number of species and the botanic structure of examined communities. Causes of floristic changes were determined with index numbers of the evaluation of site conditions. Changes in site conditions led to the development of new taxonomic units of frequently unstable, transitory character. The sward of communities from the class Phragmitetea was enriched in the total number of species but the proportion of species characteristic for this class decreased during 40 years. Simultaneously, the proportion of species from the class Molinio-Arrhebatheretea increased, in particular the proportion of species characteristic for the Arrhenatheretalia order. Flooded areas in the Warta River valley, because of their physiography and species richness, are extremely valuable not only due to their biocenotic role in maintaining biodiversity but also because of their exceptional landscape appeal and recreational-touristic function.

Opis:
Black alder is naturally widespread across all of Europe and has an increasing importance for forest ecosystems. Thanks to the considerable tolerance to adverse climatic and edaphic environmental conditions black alder is important both in open landscapes and can also be involved in the rehabilitation of disturbed soils. Assessment of site productivity is essential for providing a frame of reference for silvicultural diagnosis and prescription in order to ensure the sustainability of existing and newly established ecosystems. The most accepted method of evaluating site productivity is the site index (SI). The aim of the presented research was to develop the SI model for black alder in southern Poland. The developed SI model was used as a tool in order to test the research hypothesis assuming the increase in site productivity for black alder in southern Poland. The research material for development of SI model were stem analysis data from 180 research plots. Both, the local model parameter, which was estimated individually for every tree, and the other parameters estimated globally for the whole data set were estimated simultaneously. Changes in site productivity were analyzed on research plots and a set of 12,974 stands from the forest inventory database. Site indices calculated using the developed model are negatively correlated with age/ positively correlated with establishment year of the stands. This confirms the existence of the phenomenon of increasing site productivity for black alder. During the last century site productivity measured with site index increased on average 5 m. Therefore, black alder that belongs to the fast-growing tree species should be considered of the increasing importance for forest management.

Changes of the groundwater levels in the area of clearcutting in a swampy habitat and moist mixed broadleaved forest are analysed in the paper. The aim of the research is to evaluate the influence of clearcutting on the amount of changes in groundwater levels. The research was carried out in two forestries located on the southern tip of Greater Poland, belonging to Siemianice Experimental Forest Farm. The analysis is based on data from wells located in ashalder swamp forest in Marianka forestry and moist broadleaved forest in Laski forestry. The research is based on the relation of groundwater levels in wells located in clearcutting and observation wells. The received relationship of groundwater levels helps estimate changes in groundwater table, depending on its depth before clearcutting. The research shows increases of groundwater levels in the area of clearcutting. Increments are significantly higher in moist broadleaved forest than in ashalder swamp forest.

This study aimed at examining the effect of municipal waste dumping site in Łęczyca near Stargard Szczeciński on soil microflora in its impact zone. Performed analyses showed that most numerous microorganism populations in soil around this object were mainly bacteria, then actinomycetes, whereas the fungi were least abundant. Microorganisms were most numerous in the closest vicinity of the waste dumping site, particularly in surface soil layer. Despite the fact that the largest microbial biomass was found in the closest vicinity of the object and the smallest - at the edge of its buffer zone, no significant correlation was noted between the biomass and distance from the waste dumping site.

The Białowice site is situated in the north-west of the Nowa Sól Depression which is part of the Central Poland Lowlands. Palynological analysis shows that lake and swamp accumulations took place in the Early Vistulian. Two warm interstadial-rank oscillations (Brörup and Odderade) and a stadial (Rederstall) have been distinguished during the Early Vistulian. The sequence of changes at Białowice is similar to the sequences in profiles from other parts of Poland and Western Europe. Until now, in that region of Poland the vegetation succession of the Brörup and Odderade had remained unknown. The lithology of the profile at Białowice shows rapid changes of sedimentation which have been observed in the younger part of the Brörup and at the Brörup/Rederstall transition. Geological and palynological data suggests that the maximum limit of the Vistulian Glaciation to the south of the Żary Hills.

Research for the present paper was carried out in field experiment localized in the vicinity of the municipal landfill site in Tarnow. In designated areas 8 plots were established, in which horse bean ‘Nadwislanski’ var., spring wheat ‘Zura’ var. and potatoes ‘Kuklik’ var. were cultivated in 2006 and 2007 using the same agricultural technology. Additional plot was located in restored sector of the landfill. On the basis of the obtained results it can be concluded that in soil under cultivation of various agricultural plants, microscopic fungi – Micromycetes occurred with frequency from 8440 to 179150 cfu g–1 of soil dry mass. The abundance of fungi in soil on the plots with spring wheat was lower than under other agricultural plants (potatoes, horse bean). Based on the analyses it was also found that the occurrence of fungi in tested soils was influenced by plot location in relation to the landfill and type and period of growth of the cultivated plant.

The paper presents the data on an Eemian–Late Glacial sedimentary sequence from the Zwierzyniec site, central Poland. A number of boreholes document one or two organic layers that occur beneath one or two horizons of clayey and silty deposits of ice-dammed lakes. This study demonstrates to which extent the Zwierzyniec site can contribute to a better understanding of the palaeoenvironmental changes during the Eemian–Vistulian time-frame in central Poland. To study it, a multi-proxy approach was applied, involving: palynological and plant macrofossil analysis, study of rounding of quartz grains and morphology of their surface, and investigations of sand mineralogy and till petrography. The results show that a till bed is overlain by a sandy series corresponding to the glacial-interglacial transition. Either one or two distinct peaks of organic accumulation are evidenced by peat horizons. The lower horizon records spectra with hazel and hornbeam, and did, therefore, accumulate in the Eemian. Observed only in some boreholes, the upper peat horizon marks the Brørup (or the lower part of the Rederstall stadial) represented by forest-steppe conditions with patchy mosaics of larch and further transition into sedges and herbaceous taxa. Localized in between the two peat sequences, the sandy horizon marks a long-lasting aeolian transformation with weathering by frost in the Early Vistulian. Again, significant changes of the palaeoenvironmental regime occurred, and are manifested in the one or two horizons of the glaciolacustrine sediments. This corresponded to the last glaciation in the region, when the ice-dammed lakes formed during the Main Stadial.

The unique nature of the Starunia palaeontological site, where nearly perfectly preserved large mammals were discovered at the beginning of the 20th century, and also the incompletely researched history of the Pleistocene vegetation of the region, provided the necessary stimulus to undertake further complex palaeobotanical investigations. The Pleistocene and Holocene sediments filling the Velyky Lukavets River valley are the object of this type of investigation. Both the succession of vegetation and radiocarbon dating indicate that the formation of biogenic sediments began in the Weichselian Middle Pleniglacial, in the Moershoofd interstadial, and lasted through the Hengelo/Denekamp Interstadial Complex and the Late Glacial and Holocene. Palaeobotanical investigations show the Middle Pleniglacial to have been characterized by an open, forestless landscape. Grassland steppe communities dominated with extremely high proportions of Poaceae, as well as Artemisia, Chenopodiaceae, and a number of herbaceous plant taxa. More moist places were occupied by dwarf shrub tundra with Betula nana, Alnus viridis, and Cyperaceae. Small changes in the character of the vegetation resulting from climatic oscillations made their mark through a slight increase in the proportion of tree-birches, fir and pine. The record of Late Weichselian plant succession in the Velyky Lukavets River valley also documents the dominance of open habitats with a preponderance of steppe and steppe-tundra communities and a dry, continental climate. Only with the beginning of the Holocene did an improvement in climate conditions lead to the rapid expansion of forest communities with a dominance of pine accompanied by fir, larch, and trees, which are more demanding in terms of temperature, e.g. elm, oak, lime, hornbeam and hazel.

Opis:
This paper presents the results of absolute dating and biostratigraphical analysis carried out for alluvial sediments of an abandoned Starunia ozokerite mine located in the Velyky Lukavets River valley, in which large mammal remains were discovered in the first half of the 20th century. The sediments build up three terrace levels. The highest one, up to 8 m high (terrace II), is likely to be associated with a stage of aggradation, as well as with a short episode of valley broadening, which occurred in the Weichselian Late Pleniglacial. The lower one, 4 m high (terrace I), is most likely to be linked with the Holocene, despite a considerable transformation of its top due to mining activity. The lower part of this terrace cover bears coarse-grained channel sediments dated to 120.6-58.9 ka BP (Eemian Interglacial?-Early Pleniglacial - OIS 5e, 4 and 3), and overbank (distal floodplain) mud with intercalations of biogenic deposits (peat, peat mud and biogenic mud). The overbank deposits are dated to 48.2-11.11 ka BP (Glinde Interstadial?-Younger Dryas, OIS 3-2) and are overlain by Holocene (OIS 1) mud and biogenic deposits. In boreholes drilled in the vicinity of the present-day river channel, younger sediments occur more frequently. These include sediments originating from the Late Weichselian overlain by Holocene sediments. However, sediments originating exclusively from the Holocene are infrequent. The deposition of sediments took place in specific conditions of a permanent saturation of the environment with brine, petroleum and thickened bitumen. In the longest period of deposition (48.2-1.27 ka BP), ephemeral swamps, ponds and lakes were developed in different parts of the floodplain. They were marked by the presence of: Juncus glaucus/effusus, J. articulatus, Typha sp., Batrachium sp., Potamogeton filliformis, Bidens tripartita, Ranunculus sceleratus and Phragmites communis, as well as by halophytic species, like: Zannichellia palustris, Triglochin maritimum, Schoenoplectus tabernemontani, Puccinelia distans and Eleocharis palustris. Rhythmic oscillations between cold and warm climatic conditions, typical of the Weichselian age and well identified in Western Europe, are here marked by the changes of plant communities (woody assemblages passing into steppe and tundra), but are not noticeably recorded in the sediments of the Velyky Lukavets River. This shows that the greatest part of the discussed period involved the formation of poorly differentiated silty overbank sediments with intercalations of biogenic sediments. However, the variability of sediments provides evidence for extreme events which occurred in the Holocene.

Field research connected with the subject of the paper was conducted from March 2006 to September 2007. For the sake of the experiment 8 experimental points were established on each side of the municipal waste landfill in Tarnów in two zones: 50-200 m and 250-500 m from its boundaries and samples were collected from the soil in which horse bean, Nadwiślański c.v. was cultivated. An additional ninth point was located in the landfill area, in the inactive, reclaimed landfill seetor. The results of microbiological tests show obvious differences in the quantitative composition of microflora participating in nitrogen metabolism depending on the distance from the active landfill sector. Comparison of all results revealed an apparent increase in the number of microorganisms participating in nitrogen metabolism during the horse bean vegetation period in comparison with their occurrence before and after the completed vegetation season.

Opis:
Landfilling is the most popular method of waste treatment in Poland. Old and usually uninsulated landfills constitute a major source of contaminants, which are leached by precipitation waters. As rainwater percolates through a landfill, suspended and dissolved components, waste decomposition products and various microorganisms are leached. Given the lack of any protection against leachate contacting groundwater, contaminants spread over a distance ranging from dozens of meters to several kilometers. The purpose of this paper was to determine the degree of contamination of leachate and groundwater with heavy metals (manganese, iron, nickel, chromium, zinc, copper, lead and cadmium) in the surroundings of the Maoelice municipal landfill site in Wroc³aw. The landfill was created without prior insulation of its base, and it has accumulated ca 2.4 mln m3 of waste in over thirty years of its use. Studies on the groundwater were carried out from 1995 to 2008, and the examination of the leachate was concluded in 2004. The analysis of the results shows that the groundwater flowing to the research object is already contaminated. While water percolates through the uninsulated base of the landfill, its quality continues to deteriorate. A large quantity of accumulated waste contributes to the severe contamination of the groundwater. Leachate from the insulated part of the landfill displayed properties that correspond to “old” landfills. Inside such landfills, the processes occurring during the methanogenic phase of waste decomposition are abundant. Concentrations of heavy metals found during the research (except some characteristic values of iron and chromium) were within the limits that allow discharge to sewage facilities, surface waters or soil. Changes in the content of analyzed heavy metals in the leachate and groundwater give a reason to suppose that in the years to come the amount of leached contamination may grow. Thus, it is necessary to continue the research – even in a scope broader than required by regulations concerning the monitoring of landfills.

In spite of the growing importance of the protective and social functions of forests, their productive function, including production of raw wood with a diversified assortment structure, is still prominent. Changes in the assortment structure depend to a large extent on tree species, habitat conditions and intensity of tending treatments. However, for the temporal organization of forest management, it is essential to recognize the dynamics of these changes in relation to stand age. The paper contains an analysis of quantitative and qualitative changes in the assortment structure of the Ist site index pine stands in the Wilcze Bagno Forest Compartment (Pisz Forest District), depending on the length of the primary production of standing timber. Data from 10 forest stands similar in terms of habitat, stand density and anagement treatments were taken for analysis. These stands form a homologous series ranging in age between 40 and 130 years.

Opis:
Remains of a vast Roman pottery production complex were found on the shore of the Plemići Bay (Općina Ražanac, Zadar county) in 2012, and confirmed by geophysical survey. Ground-penetrating radar measurements revealed outline of a rectangular building that finds analogies with Roman storehouses (horreum). The area occupied by remains of the Roman pottery workshop was covered by immense soil-debris flows. Three geological exposures located to the north of the remains of the Roman building were documented using lithological and malacological analysis, and magnetic susceptibility measurements. The profiles revealed at least three generations of slope sediments, formed in result ofintensive soil or debris flows in a dry climate, most probably in 5th c. AD. In the next, wet phase sediments were transported downslope and deposited on the Roman structures after 5th c. AD. Environmental conditions at Pelmići weresupply with paleoclimate evidence from the Adriatic region. At ca. 1.5 cal. BP lake levels in the eastern Adriatic area were drastically reduced, probably because of strong decrease in humidity, correlated with the so-called North Atlantic Bond event 3. The drought was followed by a humid episode, also attested at the Plemići archaeological site.

Opis:
Fluvial deposits subjected to this study are exposed at the Brześnica site, in the south-western part of the Wielkopolska region in Poland, which was close to the ice-sheet limit during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). Sedimentological analyses, including lithofacies descriptions, palaeocurrent measurements, grain size and rounding analyses and heavy mineral compositions indicate that the fluvial deposits at Brześnica were deposited in braided river environment. The following fluvial sedimentary processes were inferred: (1) shallow, rapid flow alternating with waning flow, (2) infilling of erosional channels with fluvial sediments during flood events, (3) changes from supercritical to subcritical flows, and (4) shallow sheet floods. The results of OSL dating indicated sediment deposition ~65.2 ±1.5 ka, i.e. in MIS 4, that was here characterized by cold environmental conditions and a general shift from meandering to braided fluvial sedimentation style. This finding contrasts with accumulation/erosion phases interpreted previously in this region for that time interval; however, it is consistent with recent studies of fluvial systems functioning during MIS 5-2 and of factors responsible for sedimentation style.
