Opis:
Up till now two fundamental concepts of faith (religion) and knowledge (science) have been used in Christianity. In this way the Greek tradition, and especially old-Christian one, is followed, the tradition that distinguished the world of knowledge that is a product of the cognizing mind from the world of revelation that accepts God's non-scientific gift. Christianity’s whole effort was directed at indicating the differences between science and revelation, and then at showing harmony, or at least non-contradiction, between them. This is why Anton Grabner-Haider (*1940), an Austrian philosopher of religion, had to take into consideration also the world of thought comprising science and the world of the experience of faith, including revelation. In turn, he presented the mutual relations between these worlds, understanding science on the ground of the neopositivist conception and faith on the ground of the Church’s popular contemporary understanding of faith. It is a pity he does not use the strictly theological concept of faith, and especially the more modern personalist conception, despite verbally referring to personalism. However, making modern attempts at shifting the problem of faith and knowledge as well as of their mutual relations onto the basis of the language is exactly Grabner-Haider’s achievement. In this way a new situation arises, in which not so much the world of ideas and thoughts opposes the world of religious experience and revelation, as the world of one or two languages does.

Opis:
At the turn of the 20th and 21st century, religiosity in Poland varies so much that we can talk about the appearance of a new form of spirituality. It is a continuous process, but trying as an object of sociological research because of the diversity of attitudes towards institutionalized religion. We can formulate the assumption that both the process of secularisation and desecularisation are observed in the area of behaviour, emotions and aspirations to the knowledge of the order existing in the world surrounding the human. Post-modern spirituality is a desire to know the truth in the reasons for the existence of reality, understood in a deterministic or indeterministic manner. Deterministic beliefs about governance in the world have religious dimension that has a direct relationship to faith in God or impersonal supernatural forces. The indeterministic conviction about the order existing in the world results from the assumption that it is humanity who establishes this order, and it is on its knowledge, inquisitiveness and wisdom based on experience that the discovery of objective truth depends. A discussion on these two forms of post-modern spirituality, referred to as sophia and logos, is the subject of the analysis contained in this paper. The entire analysis takes into account only the axiological and normative system of post-modern religiosity and spirituality.

Opis:
Dotychczas operowano w chrześcijaństwie dwoma podstawowymi pojęciami: wiary (religii) i wiedzy (nauki).

Referring to the session "Science and religion" (Filozofia Nauki 1/2006) - esp. to Jan Wolenski's contribution article "Return to the theory of double truth" - the author presents two ways of interpreting the meaning of religion statements. According to one of them, the statements may be shown to possess some kind of empirical content, due to their definitional connection with empirical terms of everyday language, and, in consequence, may bear logical relations to empirical statements. According to the other way of interpreting religion statements, they appear to be devoid of any empirical content and - s Wolenski claims - cannot be supported or threatened by any empirical data.

This article offers a reading of Jacques Derrida’s account of “religion” and “life” in his seminal essay “Faith and Knowledge.” Applying Derrida’s aporetic structure of “X without X” to his remarks on religion and life in “Faith and Knowledge,” this article suggests that underlying Derrida’s endeavor to “think religion abstractly” is a radical re-conception not only of religion as “religion without religion” but moreover a re-imagination of life as “life without life” that breaks away from the traditional metaphysical understandings of life and religion.

Opis:
Preview: Almost twenty-five years have passed after the publication of Jacques Derrida’s 1996 seminal essay, “Faith and Knowledge: Religion at the Limits of Reason Alone,” one of the most important, but also most enigmatic post-secular texts of late modernity. Six articles in this issue are devoted directly to Derrida’s essay. The other two can also be read along them as dealing with broadly conceived post-secular issues. They all can be brought under the traditional heading of “faith and knowledge” – simultaneously in recognition of Derrida’s title and in opening a wider perspective on fides et ratio today (a few decades after the famous 1994 Capri seminar on religion). Derrida participated in the seminar with his 2000 essay (Glauben und Wissen), on the same subject, along with the equally famous intervention of Jürgen Habermas. The main theme of Derrida’s take on the confrontation between fides and ratio is the analysis of the relation between modern philosophy/knowledge and modern religion/faith: a complex co-dependence which challenges Hegel’s conviction that philosophy had managed to sublate religion completely and allowed for the survival of its most valuable contents in a new rational form. Pace Martin Hägglund’s thesis, (according to which Derrida’s philosophy should be classified as “radical atheism” in the Hegelian vein), the essays in this volume present Derrida’s thinking on religion as far more ambivalent, leaning toward not so much atheism as radical iconoclasm which does not annul the idea of divinity, but rather hides it away from sight.

Opis:
In this essay, I argue that a comparison of Derrida’s “Faith and Knowledge” to the texts and thought of classical rabbinic Judaism can illuminate new conceptual connections among the different elements of Derrida’s thought. Both Derrida and the rabbinic texts can be viewed as affirming a type of “holding back” and “allowing the other to be,” stances which Derrida links to “religiosity” and to “messianicity beyond all messianism.” Moreover, the rabbinic texts appear to avoid the “autoimmune” reaction that Derrida sees as stemming from many sacrificial and self-sacrificial logics in which the self is problematically sacrificed in order to preserve the “unscathed” other. In addition, the rabbinic texts’ stance concerning divine authorization for war and capital punishment help to illuminate Derrida’s claim that the ostensibly “secular” wars of modern states are in fact better understood as “wars of religion.”

Opis:
The author adopted reflection reminds two basic elements without there is no catechesis. He names them: fides and ratio. The faith of people, in terms of theological involved in catechesis, faith catechist and catechized, should be the starting point for any strictly catechetical reflection. A second essential element is the ratio of catechesis, in the sense – knowledge or science. For catechesis faith and knowledge are two wings on which the human spirit rises to the unity with Christ. Catechist and catechized should be aware of these two pillars of catechesis, they should not oppose itself, but should them make combined. They must be fully aware that thanks fides et ratio they will become mature and joyful people in faith. This catechist and catechized meeting, regardless of the place, leads to a full unity with Jesus Christ.

The essay is an introduction to the Polish translation of Vladimir Solovjev’s article entitled Faith, reason and experience. In the metaphysical and epistemological perspective Solovjev considered faith, reason and experience as three stages of the process of cognition. On the other hand, in the methodological perspective three mentioned categories are regarded as correlates of religion, philosophy and science. Solovjev demanded connection of faith, reason and experience (and properly, theology, philosophy and science) and creation of the system of the integral knowledge.

The characteristics of the knowledge of God through the religion faith is consequence of subject – that one’s overtopped the epistemic powers of human – which is accessible merely in that way. The method of the religious faith is an engagement of the intellect and a will the recognised subject. The religious faith is a different cognition toward other types of knowledge. It is also the cognition which assumes a former natural acquired knowledge. A leap of faith in that what was deemed for truth needs activities of intellect.

Opis:
For centuries, the search for truth has been one of the most important tasks for universities and academia. Truth has been the foundation of these institutions. Knowing the truth is a unique spiritual joy (gaudium veritatis). The role of the university in the modern world is not only to observe the events and comment upon them, but also to search for truth and serve humanity. The service of truth and humanity requires crossing the borders of individual disciplines. The dialogue between science and faith can grow creatively in such a way as to overcome the restrictions imposed and open up to the full potential of the combination. Thus faith by its nature requires that its object be understood with the aid of reason, and reason seeking the full truth opens up to what faith can present. Faith enters into human life and knowledge not in order to abolish reason's autonomy, nor to limit its scope for action. Faith cannot therefore lead to some form of depreciation of reason. These two realities - faith and reason - intertwine and complement each other, while each has its own space in which it becomes real.

The aim of catechesis is not simply to give information to interlocutors about the Catholic faith. Catechesis seeks to do much more than this, with its ultimate aim being that of putting the human being in communion with Christ. This is achieved through the six tasks of catechesis which need to be deeply embedded in human experiences. The six tasks through which catechesis seeks to achieve its endeavours include: knowledge of the faith, liturgical education, moral formation, formation in prayer and methods of prayer, education for community life and missionary initiation.

Complementarity in Nature and … beyond? or: coincidentia oppositorum in the Bibleas Cusanus wishes it In the micro-world, science states both indeterminacy of cognitive re-sults and dubious character of elementary particles, e.g. of light: corpus¬cular and wave. Hence former ideal of science which was supposed to give certainty of cognitive results lost its raison d'être, not mentioning the principle of indeterminacy. In humanities and in everyday life we aim at formulating conclusions which are supposed to give certainty. If we are not able to give evidence, cognition must be lacking precision to some extent. Since the whole Bible has inspired character, the contradictions appearing in it cannot be accidental, and so they become a task for a man. Therefore criterion of coherence in the Bible does not have raison d'être, and hence we encounter some immanent contradictions in it, e.g. recommendations, and on that account a man has to choose between them, the choices resulting in for and against arguments. In consequence, the act of faith will have to be accompanied by uncertainty and risk. The author illustrates these theses by the examples from the Old and the New Testaments, exemplarily analyzing so called „Abraham’s conflict”. Existentialized faith understood in this way does not comprise single acts, there should be repetitive choices forcing a man into steady activity in religious sphere. In contrast to empirical sciences, contradictions included in the Bible do not onlydisqualify the Gospel, but they have faith-creating character because of it.
