Opis:
The article presents the tests results of the prototype design of hydraulically assisted injector that is designed for gas supply into diesel engines. The construction of the injector allows for its positioning in the glow plug socket, so that the gas is injected directly into the combustion chamber. The cycle analysis of the four-cylinder Andoria ADCR engine with a capacity of 2.6 dm3 for different crankshaft rotational speeds allowed to determine the necessary time for fuel injection. Because of that, it was possible to determine the required mass flow rate of the injector, for replacing as much of the original fuel by gaseous fuel. To ensure a high value of flow inside the injector, supply pressure equal to 1 MPa was applied. High gas supply pressure requires high value of valve opening forces. For this purpose a injector with hydraulic control system, using a liquid under pressure for the opening process was designed. On the basis of air pressure measurements in the flow line after the injector, the analysis of opening and closing of the valve was made. Measurements of outflow mass of the injector were also carried out. The results showed that the designed injector meets the requirements necessary to supply ADCR engine with CNG fuel.

This article presents an alternative solution for marine units operating both inside and outside areas covered by strict controls on sulphur emissions. Emission Control Areas include the waters of the Baltic Sea, the North Sea, the English Channel, and the coasts of North America. Shipping in these areas is obliged to use fuel with a sulphur content in accordance with European Parliament and Council Directive 2012/33/EU. The technology to power units with marine diesel oil and other fuels compliant with the requirements of the Sulphur Directive is described. Low-sulphur fuel is efficient and environmentally friendly, and liquefied natural gas (LNG fuel) is an example of the technology described.

The paper presents result of combustion stability assessment of dual fuel engine. The authors analyzed results of co-combustion of diesel fuel with alcohol in terms of combustion stability. The comparative analysis of both the operational parameters of the engine and the IMEP, as the parameters determining the stability of the combustion process, were carried out. It was analyzed, among others values of the COVIMEP coefficient, the spread of the maximum pressure value, the angle of the position of maximum pressure and the probability density distribution of the IMEP. The experimental investigation was conducted on 1-cylinder air cooled compression ignition engine. The test engine operated with constant rpm equal to 1500 rpm and constant angle of start of diesel fuel injection. The engine was operated with ethanol up to 50% of its energy fraction. The influence of ethanol on ignition delay time spread and end of combustion process was evaluated. It turns out that the share of ethanol does not adversely affect the stability of ignition.

Opis:
A low-pressure gas supply system for dual fuel engines was designed to transport liquid natural gas from a storage tank to a dual fuel engine and gasify it during transportation. The heat exchange area and pressure drop in the spiral- wound heat exchanger, the volume of the buffer tank and the pressure drop in the pipeline of the gas supply system were calculated by programming using Python. Experiments were carried out during the proces of starting and running the dual fuel engine using this gas supply system. Experimental data show that the gas supply system can supply gas stably during the process and ensure the stable operation of the dual fuel engine. The effects of the parameters of natural gas and ethylene glycol solution on the heat exchange area of the spiralwound heat exchanger and the volume of the buffer tank in the gas supply system were studied. The results show that the heat exchange area calculated according to pure methane can adapt to the case of non-pure methane. The temperature difference between natural gas and ethylene glycol solution should be increased in order to reduce the heat exchange area. The heat exchange area selected according to the high pressure of natural gas can adapt to the low pressure of natural gas. The volume of the buffer tank should be selected according to the situation of the minimum methane content to adapt to the situation of high methane content. The main influencing factor in selecting the volume of the buffer tank is the natural gas flow. The results can provide guidance for the design of the gas supply system for dual fuel engines.

Opis:
This article presents the problem of the knock combustion in a dual fuel compression engine, in which additional fuel besides diesel oil was compressed natural gas (CNG). CNG was injected into the engine intake system and mixed with air supplying the engine. In this paper described the reasons of knock combustion, which occur with more intensity with the increase of methane content in engine fuel. The phenomenon of knock combustion in the dual fuel engine is difficult to eliminate, often impossible to avoid, and it forms a barrier limiting increase of methane share in the fuel. Also, this article contains the results of engine indicating and discussion on changes in the indicating diagrams caused by knock combustion. Carried out tests included engine indicating and numerical calculation of indicator diagrams with using spectral analysis and filtering cylinder pressure signals with high-pass filters. As a result of this calculation, several parameters describing intensity of knock combustion were determined. They allow to tell taking into account only cylinder pressure analysis if there is knock combustion inside engine combustion chamber or not. Knocking is an undesirable type of combustion in the engine, leading to excessive thermal and mechanical loading of the engine parts, causing premature wear of them. For this reason, this type of combustion should be eliminated from the engine operation and researchers of combustion processes must be provided with tools to detect and determine this kind of combustion.

Opis:
The results of CFD modelling a dual fuel diesel engine powered with both methanol and diesel fuel is presented in the paper. Modelling was performed with 20 and a 50% energetic share of methanol in the entire dose. The analysis was conducted on both the thermodynamic parameters and exhaust toxicity of dual fuel engine. It was found that the various share of methanol influences the ignition delay of the combustion process and after start of main phase of combustion, the process occurs faster than in case of the diesel engine. It was found that the time of 10-90% burn of the fuel is much shorter than it is in the diesel engine. The dual fuel engine was characterized by higher indicated mean pressure in the whole range of diesel fuel injection timings. While analysing toxic exhaust emission from the dual fuel engine powered with methanol, it was found that the rate of NO formation was significantly higher than from the diesel engine. The combustion process in the dual fuel engine occurs more rapidly than in the conventional diesel engine, which contributes to form areas with high temperature, and in combination with presence of oxygen from the air and oxygen bonded in the methanol, promotes the NO formation. In the case of the dual fuel engine, it was found that soot emission was reduced. The engine running with diesel injection start at 8.5 deg before TDC, the soot emissions were more than twice lower in the dual fuel engine, while the emission of NO was much higher.

Opis:
At the moment, there is a growing interest in low-power generating units in dispersed system. The production of energy in small units located in the vicinity of the energy recipients offers considerable benefits. First and foremost, it lowers the cost of energy production and the cost of its transfer and also makes the recipient independent from the domestic supplier. Small cogeneration aggregates will facilitate the use of energy from dispersed renewable resources. Gas self-ignition engines in cogeneration system powered with biofuels can be used in construction industry as ecological sources of heat and electrical energy, limiting the need for fossil fuels. This paper presents the possibility of using alternative fuels for internal combustion engines. It describes the possibility of using liquid biofuels separately or natural gas fuel to power diesel engines in dual fuel system. The conception of supplying low-power generator with diesel engine with natural gas to a dose of liquid biofuels test case. Pointed to the factors determining the desirability of a particular concept. Indicated the modification of the engine power to supply the natural gas generator with a dose of liquid biofuels. New technologies of extracting and using biofuels and alternative fuels are being introduced and developed for generating heat and electric energy. Studies on the use of gas and liquid alternative fuels are directly linked to research on the production of renewable and alternative energy as well as environment protection by minimizing emissions of toxic substances into the atmosphere.

Opis:
One potential solution for reducing carbon dioxide emissions from ships and meeting the Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index (EEXI) requirements is to use a hybrid propulsion system that combines liquid hydrogen and liquefied natural gas fuels. To improve energy efficiency for diesel-electric dual-fuel ship propulsion systems, an engine power limitation system can also be used. This paper examines the potential use of these systems with regard to several factors, including compliance with EEXI standards set by the International Maritime Organization, fuel ratio optimisation, installation requirements, and economic feasibility. As a case study, an LNG carrier is analysed, with dual-fuel diesel-electric and two hybrid systems adjusted to meet IMO-EEXI requirements with engine power limitation percentages of 25%, 0% (hybrid option 1), and 15% (hybrid option 2), respectively. From an economic standpoint, the liquid hydrogenbased system has competitive costs compared to the dual-fuel diesel-electric system, with costs of 2.1 and 2.5 dollars per kilogram for hybrid system options 1 and 2, respectively.

Opis:
Protection of the environment and counteracting global warming require finding alternative sources of energy. One of the methods of generating energy from environmentally friendly sources is increasing the share of gaseous fuels in the total energy balance. The use of these fuels in compression-ignition (CI) engines is difficult due to their relatively high autoignition temperature. One solution for using these fuels in CI engines is operating in a dualfuel mode, where the air and gas mixture is ignited with a liquid fuel dose. In this method, a series of relatively complex chemical processes occur in the engine's combustion chamber, related to the combustion of individual fuel fractions that interact with one another. Analysis of combustion of specific fuels in this type of fuel injection to the engine is difficult due to the fact that combustion of both fuel fractions takes place simultaneously. Simulation experiments can be used to analyse the impact of diesel fuel combustion on gaseous fuel combustion. In this paper, we discuss the results of simulation tests of combustion, based on the proprietary multiphase model of a dual-fuel engine. The results obtained from the simulation allow for analysis of the combustion process of individual fuels separately, which expands the knowledge obtained from experimental tests on the engine.

Opis:
Following the modern fuel market, one can notice that prices of liquid petroleum derivatives - petrol and diesel oil - which most often fuel piston internal combustion engines are increasingly higher. Similarly, the price of petroleum-derivative gas (LPG - the liquefied petroleum gas - simply speaking, a mixture of propane and butane) is also growing. Many academic and industrial institutions of science conduct research to determine whether it is possible to replace liquid petroleum-derivative fuels with some other potentially cheaper ones. It would also be beneficial if these new fuels were more "ecological" - so that their combustion products would not be harmful for the environment and if they were produced with the use of plants. Fuel stations commonly offer a fuel for diesel engines which is a mixture of fatty acids methyl esters (FAMEs) from vegetable oils, in Poland for instance from rape seeds. The paper presents a comparison of selected operating parameters of the Hatz 1B40 engine fuelled with mixtures of diesel oil or liquid bio-fuel and natural gas. Indicator diagrams, exhaust gases composition and vibration signals recorded on the engine body were analyzed. The study was conducted on the Hatz 1B40 diesel engine which is used among others in FOGO power generator sets, after replacing the original feeding system by common rail system for liquid fuels and after adding natural gas feeding system.

In this paper are presented results of dual fuel diesel engine bench testing carried out by author. The engine was fuelled parallel with two fuels. The second, additional fuel was compressed natural gas (CNG). CNG was injected into engine inlet system before inlet to engine turbocharger. There was installed a pressure transducer in one of engine cylinders and cylinder pressure was registered at the time of testing. There is discussed place and way of pressure sensor installation and impact on quality of indicating signals of the channel connecting the transducer with combustion chamber. The carried out investigations included measurement of emissions and engine indicating completed with the heat release characteristics. There was considered influence of CNG on CO, NOx, THC and NMHC emissions, especially how pollutant emissions depend on the share of methane in fuel. The effect of using natural gas as an additional fuel injected to regular CI engine on heat release rate was investigated, as well as its rate and duration. Discussed the differences between combustion of methane and diesel oil and ways of spreading flames into air-fuel mixture for these two mixed fuels The processes of combustion of diesel oil and methane are totally different. The study searches for the limits of methane content due to knocking combustion. Additive of methane to the diesel fuel is a reason of retarded heat release, decrease of engine efficiency, greater fuel consumption and changes in emissions corresponding to the lag of self-ignition

Due to economic and ecological reasons alternative ways of supply of combustion engines are looked for. In diesel engines, a growing interest in systems allowing the admixture of propane-butane has been observed. This is due to several reasons: the price of fuel, a wide distribution network, as well as improving combustion efficiency. With the development of dual fuel engine supply, a study of the effects of LPG on noise generation and vibration seems to be reasonable, as well as an attempt to evaluate the combustion process. This paper describes the study of these phenomena on the example of the 1.4 TDI Volkswagen engine with a modified power supply allowing for the addition of LPG in the gas phase and liquid phase. The results of research on engine noise and vibration during operation under load on a chassis dynamometer for different shares of LPG and for different control parameters, in particular the injection timing,. have been presented. The study was an attempt to verify the control parameters in order to obtain the lowest possible value of noise and vibration, while maintaining the high efficiency of the combustion process. By recording vibrations off the motor housing as well as the body, it was possible to determine the noise amplitude spectrum, on the basis of which the conclusions have been formulated.

W artykule przedstawiono wyniki badań trójwymiarowego modelu dwupaliowego silnika diesla z wykorzystaniem oprogramowania AVL FIRE. Wykonano analizę procesu tworzenia mieszanki w silniku zasilanym pośrednim i bezpośrednim wtryskiem gazu.
The operation of the Diesel engine becomes cheaper when such an engine is converted to run on a Diesel oil and natural gas. However, if a gaseous fuel is directly injected into an intake system, the amount of a Diesel fuel to be replaced by a gaseous fuel is limited. This is due to the increased emissions of toxic compounds in exhaust gases and the risk of knocking as a result of entering an unburnt amount of a gaseous fuel into an exhaust system and a negligible mixture stratification in a combustion chamber. The direct injection of a gaseous fuel into the combustion chamber is an alternative method. The paper studies mixture formations for an indirect and direct gaseous fuel injection in an AVL FIRE 3D model of a dual-fuel Diesel engine.

This paper concerns analysis of possible use of alcohols for the feeding of self - ignition and spark-ignition engines operating in a dual- fuel mode , i.e. simultaneously combusting alcohol and diesel oil or alcohol and petrol . Issues associated with the requirements for application of bio-fuels were presented with taking into account National Index Targets , bio-ethanol production methods and dynamics of its production worldwide and in Poland. The considerations are illustrated by results of the tests on spark- ignition and self- ignition engines fed with two fuels : petrol and methanol or diesel oil and methanol, respectively. The tests were carried out on a 1100 MPI Fiat four- cylinder engine with multi-point injection and a prototype collector fitted with additional injectors in each cylinder. The other tested engine was a SW 680 six- cylinder direct- injection diesel engine. Influence of a methanol addition on basic operational parameters of the engines and exhaust gas toxicity were analyzed. The tests showed a favourable influence of methanol on combustion process of traditional fuels and on some operational parameters of engines. An addition of methanol resulted in a distinct rise of total efficiency of both types of engines at maintained output parameters ( maximum power and torque ). In the same time a radical drop in content of hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides in exhaust gas was observed at high shares of methanol in feeding dose of ZI ( petrol) engine, and 2-3 fold lower smokiness in case of ZS ( diesel) engine. Among unfavourable phenomena, a rather insignificant rise of CO and NOx content for ZI engine, and THC and NOx – for ZS engine, should be numbered. It requires to carry out further research on optimum control parameters of the engines. Conclusions drawn from this work may be used for implementation of bio-fuels to feeding the combustion engines.

At former KONES one of the co-authors presented a paper, is which general information about natural gas properties, reserves, production and distribution were given and application to SI and CI engines was presented, compared and discussed. It was shown, that more promising is dual-fuel CI engine. There is a lot of information on combustion, emissions and performances of dual-fuel natural gas engines, but there are also blank areas and controversial opinions, which were pointed out and discussed in this paper. For example: why combustion processes are delayed in comparison with combustion of diesel fuel only. It is also not clear whether noise of dual-fuel engine is higher than that of diesel engine or lower (there are contradictory data). These problems are shown and discussed in this paper. The proposal of further research is presented. Ignition and combustion in dual-fuel natural gas engines is yet not fully recognized, especially: combustion duration, mechanism at gaseous and condensed phase burning, kinetics and diffusion controlled combustion, noise, knock and cycle-by-cycle variation. Optimization of control parameters on account of efficiency and emissions is still an open problem. Influence of natural gas composition and its changes on engine performance and emissions still demand estimation.
