Borderland, in other words: PolishnessThe article outlines the history of Polish culture, underlining its borderland nature, while also showing the thematic connection occurring between the essays that follow it. It invokes a variety of examples of artists to whom an adjective „Polish” does not quite fit, although the language of their work was the Polish language. It indicates „borderlandness” as a typical Polish trait.

Opis:
The article examines the relationship between the lyrics and prose of Mieczysław Romanowski, the most talented poet of the last generation of the Romantics, and the work of other contributors of the weekly magazine Dziennik Literacki, published in Lwów between 1852 and 1870. Although their concerns and poetics have a lot in common, the high tone of Romanowski’s patriotic art is distinctly his own. In this article the analysis of his poetry is complemented by an examination of his essays and other writings which contain his views on contemporary social issues.

The paper is an analysis of a 1958 memorial essay on Bruno Schulz by Hanna Mortkowicz-Olczakowa, focused on its two aspects. One is Schulz’s relationship with the writer Maria Kuncewiczowa, rarely addressed by scholars but important since her novel Cudzoziemka played a significant role in Schulz’s literary criticism. The other is Mortkowicz-Olczakowa’s memorial narration itself and her role in promoting the Drogobych writer’s myth. The memorial essay shows clear ambivalences as regards the myth of Schulz, most likely representing a mourning bias in the postwar reception of his writing.

The article is a biographical outline of Rear Admiral Gereon Grzenia-Romanowski (1916- -1983), who was born in a Kashubian merchant family in Chojnice. He began his military education at the Cadet Corps in Chełmno, and then continued it in Rawicz. Then he was admitted to the Infantry Officer Cadet School in Komorów near Ostrów Mazowiecka. During the September campaign 1939 he fought in the Warsaw Tank-Motor Brigade. In the years of occupation he joined the Union of Armed Struggle (ZWZ), and from 1943 he was active in the communist People’s Guard (GL). After 1945, he held many responsible positions in the Polish Army. He was, among others Deputy Commander for Political Affairs of the 12th Infantry Division (12th Infantry Division) and the 16th Kashubian Infantry Division (16th KDP). In 1956, he became the deputy commander of the Navy (MW) for political affairs. He remained in this office until 1965. In 1956, he was one of the co-founders of the Kashubian Association (later the Kashubian-Pomeranian Association). After retiring, he worked as a representative of the Polish Ocean Lines (PLO) in China. He died on January 18, 1983.
