CLEMENT OF ROME
FIRST LETTER TO CORINTHIANS
Opis:
A metaphor used by Clement of Rome in his First Letter to the Corinthians (6, 2) has provoked much controversy among scholars. Christian women suffering outrages at the hands of pagans are presented there as 'Danaids and Dirces'. The present article undertakes to prove that these names do not allude to spectacles during which the women were killed, but rather to their conflicts with pagan husbands.

Opis:
Mensarius is one of the terms describing Roman bankers. It is the Latin equivalent of the Greek trapezites – the term first used to describe persons making bank operations. This term was used by Titus Livius and from Ab urbe condita we can take important information about bankers. We find quinqueviri mensarii and triumviri mensarii. The first of them were appointed as a committee in 352 B.C., and according to plebiscitium de quinqueviris mensariis creandis. Quinqueviri mensarii were supposed to solve the problem of Roman citizens’ debts, arising from loans – nexum. They acted as as public banks. The results of the works of this committee were outstanding – they helped citizens and did not cause any loss for the treasury. It so happened, because they used public funds to cover the debts only when the debtors could give a sufficient guarantee. The rest of the debtors had to transfer their goods, which were then evaluated and sold. Triumviri mensarii were appointed as three independent clerks, having wide competences, to stop the crisis doming from the lack of money in circulation (propter penuriam argenti). They were appointed by lex Minucia de triumviris mensariis, from 216 B.C. The committee had probably the same competence as this from 352 B.C. However triumviri mensariis, contrary to the previous committee, were not appointed ad hoc, but they have operated as an office until 210 B.C. Their competence was wide. They registered citizens’ debts and were making payments. They were collecting money as depositum irregulare. Triumviri mensariis were clerks acting as state officials. You can claim that both described categories of Roman officials were acting as a sui generis public bank.

From time immemorial the society has had the need of mass entertainment, defined nowadays as the mass events. The example of this can be the organization of the Roman society, where, after analyzing the source materials, we can indicate some numerous examples of the mass events, religious, sports, or political ones. In the Roman legislation we can find a series legal regulations concerning the rules of organizing such events, chiefly, if it is about the public security. In each city, also in Rome, there was the calendar of mass events, which was completed all the time. The bodies responsible for organizing the mass events in Rome were the consuls and ediles, while, in municipalities the duumvirs and ediles. They had to provide the appropriate measures to organize the events and to guarantee the security. In case of the political events, organized during the election, the responsibility lay with the organizers. The security of the participants, particularly at the amphitheatres, was guaranteed through the legislative regulation of the principles of taking the seats at the audience. Breaking the rules was punished by the high fine. The security of the mass events in the Ancient Rome maybe was not so clearly defined as it is nowadays, but it was the matter of the Roman legislators and the public bodies. Hence, during the frequent sports events or the other entertainments organized at the huge buildings, as for example at Circus Maximus, which could contain even about 300,000 spectators, the construction disasters or public riots were the rareness.

Opis:
The third successor of St. Peter on the see of the Roman ecclesiastic community, Clement of Rome, is the author of a letter addressed to the believers in Corinth. The content of this letter offers an essential witness concerning the problems in the initial stage of the history of the Church, especially in relation to its small particle in Corinth. One of the issues discussed by Clement is encouragement for the effort of inner perfection, i.e. holiness. His offer directed to the Corinthian community contains several stages which a Christian should undergo. The ascent to holiness, according to the Bishop of Rome, starts with acknowledgement of one’s guilts. This is a condition and basis for the next stage, i.e. penance and conversion. The final stage is built on the theological virtues of faith and hope. The concept of achieving holiness, offered by Clement of Rome, is close to other witnesses of that epoch: Didache and the letters of Ignatius of Antioch.

Opis:
Legislation is an art that takes inspiration from a variety of sources. There is a question: Should the antiquity be one of them? The paper attempts to give the answer. The author gives some proposals of such borrowing of ideas in the realm of marriage and family: making a choice of a candidate for a spouse, engagement and financial aspect of future marriage, contracting marriage without obligatory form, and a role of a father in the family. The presentation leads to the conclusion that the legislator should value culture of antiquity as a source of ideals but while borrowing the antique ideas he must follow the rules needed for such an action. The rules are presented in the paper, as postulates for good legislation.

History of emigration is inscribed in the history of many nations and countries; in this history it is just the citizens who are outside their countries that cultivate their national identity, the language, customs and religion. These nations also include Poles, who also in Italy took care of the attachment to their Polish identity and to the Catholic faith. „The faith and Polishness” are the two components that in the ideological and practical dimension accompanied Polish emigrants. The article shows an unknown person – Teodor Feliks Domaradzki – who was the founder and the first headmaster of the Rome school, and his cooperation with Mother Teresa Kalkstein, the Superior General of the Sisters of the Resurrection, whose result was the service to Polish emigrants in starting their school education in the Polish language.

Research of the Irano-Roman relations seems dominated by teh military perspective. This situation is cause by the very nature of the sources which mention both states mostly in light of the warfare waged between them. Equally fascinating are the diplomatic relations between Rome and Iran. One of the most interesting aspects of non-military relations are financial flows between both states. According to John Lydos, king Yazgerd was to offer emperor Theodosius II (408-450) building together a fortress which was to block the passage through Caucasus. At the same time the king demanded from the emperor participation in the costs of the defense of the fortress. The problem of the reconciliation of the payments for defending of the Caucasian frontier became the grudge between the states making the rectification of the relationships even more difficult. The key problem seems to determine the peace negotiations which initiated Iranian claim towards the Empire. The second problem might be the motives which drove Iranian monarchs in their financial claims towards the emperors.

The intention of this article is to show how a traditional aesthetic comprehension of the landscape results in overlooking landscapes regarded as degraded. Such an approach appears to dominate contemporary perceptions of Italy, resulting in their depiction as Bel Paese, whose panorama is sometimes disturbed by ugly sites. In turn, unsightliness is regarded as the outcome of, i.a. a lack of sensitivity on the part of the inhabitants. Such an omission, however, is an act of injustice. The article‘s substance is a confrontation of a vision of Rome as seen by Georg Simmel and a depiction of the Eternal City in the documentary film Sacro GRA (2013); the director presents the daily life of the residents of the region of an extensive Roman urban highway, which can be easily described as anti-landscape. Such a confrontation also serves a depiction, based on selected examples, of the way in which the comprehension of the landscape in Italian literature from the second half of the twentieth century changed: by acquiring an ethical dimension the landscape ceased to be an exclusively aesthetic phenomenon.

Over the last fifty years the tendency towards a dispersion of productive activities that emerged with globalisation and the advent of telematics have fuelled processes that are changing the structure of metropolitan areas across the world. Against the background of the general process of metropolisation, it is interesting nowadays to study the characteristics, structure and development trends of a vast “hybrid” area that has grown up around the established city of Rome. The subject of this work is an analysis of the creative sector between Rome and the sea, and the potential for future development in this area.

The aim of this paper is to present the report on the journey of Cardinal Friedrich of Hessen-Darmstadt from Rome to Wrocław, undertaken in 1676 to assume governorship of Silesia and real power over the diocese of Wrocław. The report, published in this city soon after the completion of his journey, is now preserved in the Old Prints Department of the Wrocław University Library. This source contributes new facts from the biography of the cardinal – the founder of the famous St. Elisabeth Chapel alongside the Cathedral of Wrocław, decorated with statues sculpted in Rome. During his journey to Silesia, Friedrich of Hessen-Darmstadt stayed with his retinue in Loreto, Verona and Trento, entertained everywhere with great pomp and ceremony. Then he went to Vienna, where he took part in imperial audiences and was granted the title “Durchlauchtigst”. At the end of his journey he went to Nysa and from there to Wrocław. From the art history point of view this travelogue contributes information about the “occasional architecture” and the decoration of the churches in Nysa and Wrocław, liturgical vestments and vessels, and about costumes and vehicles of Silesian dignitaries. From the literature on the subject we know that on the occasion of the arrival of the cardinal to Wrocław three new doors to the local cathedral were founded. The main entrance doors were decorated with relief depicting Jacob’s Dream and Joseph in a Well. In the light of the appropriate biblical quotations and commentaries on them these scenes illustrate the idea of the gate to the heavenly Jerusalem as well as the symbolical transition from the sphere of death to the realm of life.

The article aims at analyzing the concept and purpose of death in the Aeneid, Book 2. In its premise, the concept of death presented within the poem reveals its ethnic, social and cultural tone. The deaths which close eight books of the Aeneid indicate the progress of a main theme: abdicate the past to defend the future. Initially, towards the closing of Book 2 Creusa dies: a loyal, affectionate wife and mother who is nevertheless to be replaced by a young bride chosen for political benefits. The modes and circumstances of the deaths elicit some immediate investigations: first, it seems meaningful that some die in the bloom of youth and others in old age; second, some must die as sacrifices to the gods; third, some are destined to die because they demonstrate furious difficulties to the completion of Aeneas’ duty. Before discussing the concept of death in Book 2 it is essential to introduce the reader into some considerations representing the structure and purpose of Book 2. The authors would like to thank professor Jakub Pigoń (Institute of Classical, Mediterranean and Oriental Studies, University of Wroclaw) for his guidance and insightful remarks throughout the process of writing of this article.

Opis:
Przedmiotem artykułu jest poszukiwanie wątków chrześcijańskich obecnych w nieoczywisty sposób w wybranych filmach Federico Felliniego. Analizowane filmy Noce Cabirii, Rzym i Słodkie życie łączy przestrzeń społeczna Rzymu, naznaczonego zarówno piętnem antycznej kultury, jak i Watykanu, jako siedziby państwa kościelnego. Filmy spaja też finałowe portretowe ujęcie bohaterek, mające charakter metajęzykowego osobistego gestu reżysera. Omawiane obrazy różnią się sposobem narracji i strukturą, ale wszystkie stawiają pytania o zasady moralne i podają w wątpliwość, a nawet kwestionują wartości religijne i kulturowe, poszukując głębszego sensu. Rzym jawi się jako współczesne miasto grzechu (biblijna Sodoma i Gomora), gdzie świętość i czystość coraz trudniej odnaleźć.
The subject of this article is the search for Christian themes presented in non-obvious ways in selected films of Federico Fellini. The analyzed films Nights of Cabiria, Rome and Sweet Life are united by the social space of Rome, marked by both the stigma of ancient culture and the Vatican, as the seat of the ecclesiastical state. The films are also tied together by the final portrait of the heroines, which has the character of a meta-linguistic personal gesture made by the director. The paintings differ in narrative style and structure, but all of them raise questions about moral principles and question or even challenge religious and cultural values in search of deeper meaning. Rome appears as a modern city of sin (the biblical Sodom and Gomorrah), where holiness and purity are increasingly difficult to find.
