    In the past, literature for children and adolescents reflected society’s belief that young readers were not supposed to think for themselves. Stories were vehicles to provide direct, simple moral lessons. Those moralistic books reinforced gender and good / evil tropes, leaving little room for interpretation, moral grey areas and non-traditional gender roles. In this paper, we examine two contemporary books, Le Combat d’hiver (2006) et Le Chagrin du roi mort (2009), as examples of how youth literature has evolved. In both books, readers are presented with complex characters, plots and themes that encourage personal reflection. Morals are not something to be taught but rather felt.

    This essay examines Italian translations of three Polish novels for young adults, written and set in communist Poland of the 1960s. The analysis focuses on the problems related to the translation of the culture-specific elements of Polish reality in that historical period, almost completely unknown to the young readers in Italy. An in-depth contrastive study of the strategies applied by the translators takes into consideration different channels of the transfer from the source text to the target text. Ożogowska’s translation has been made directly from Polish by an Italian native speaker, Domagalik’s novel is a secondhand translation from German, and Jurgielewicz’s book has been translated into Italian twice: firstly by a tandem of a native Polish speaker and an Italian author of children’s books and later by a native Polish speaker without extensive translational practice. The comparison between the texts brings forward the importance of extratextual factors in the process of translation.

    This article presents the issue of child readership in a multicultural world. The article is based on the VEGA 1/0455/18 research project named “Research and Development of Reading Enthusiasm with Younger School-Age Learners”,2 in which a team focused its research activities on the personality traits of readers, the social context of reading and their reading preferences. The period when children first encounter a book induces and stimulates a cultural need in children. This need appears at a pre-school age and fully develops during the early schooling years of a child. The current multicultural school presents relatively new social contexts that accompany the child in the context of their reading experience and experiences. The contents, genres and forms that children currently prefer when reading change in connection with cultural and social diversity. The article presents certain findings from two phases of research in which the research team used the qualitative method of discussions with focus groups and a questionnaire to identify the typical traits of readers and non-readers, the social context of readership and their preferred content, forms and media. Several noteworthy differences were identified, which are closely related to a multicultural environment and significantly differentiate the young readers of today from readers in the past.

    Artykuł opisuje najważniejsze tendencje we współczesnej książce kulinarnej dla dzieci w Polsce. Na podstawie analizy wydawnictw z lat 2016–2020 zarysowano kilka wyraźnych kierunków rozwoju tych publikacji. Wciąż ukazują się książki kucharskie, które edukują i mają dostarczać pomysłów do zabaw małych czytelników w kuchni. Nowościami na rynku są pozycje dotyczące głodu i nadmiaru jedzenia, a także zbilansowanych i zdrowotnych diet. Pojawił się też – powiązany z mediami – nowy trend, który czyni z dziecka smakosza i eksperta w kuchni.
    The article discusses the most important tendencies in contemporary culinary books for children in Poland. Based on the analysis of editions published in 2016–2020, several distinct trends have been indicated. The editors continue to publish cook books which educate and provide the child reader with ideas how to play in the kitchen. Publications concerning hunger and surplus of food as well as balanced and healthy diets are the new trend. We can also observe another new trend, connected with media placing the child in the role of a gourmet and an expert at cooking.

    Introduction. The article presents the issue of disability from the literary and legal perspective. The authors take into consideration the issue of disability as a social phenomenon, which is an inseparable element of every environment and culture, as well as the subject of compelling research. An important thread of the article is the transformation of the perception of disability perception throughout the centuries. Joe Abercrombie’s Shattered Sea trilogy serves as a concrete example of its presence. The sketch also revolves around the issue of changes in the perception and treatment of people with disabilities, as well as the introduction of regulations and social education which are to serve as means to provide people with disabilities with equal opportunities in order to function in the society. Aim. The aim of the article is to present the image of people with disabilities in prose addressed to young readers, taking into consideration the context of the disability studies as well as legal regulations. Materials and methods. The article is descriptive and analytical; it applies tools characteristic of the work of the philologist (including text explication, children’s studies, disability studies) as well as that of a lawyer (literature study, document analysis). Results. The analysis of the sources as well as observations and research show that the openness to the needs of people with disabilities and education in this area are progressively increasing, also through literature.
    Wprowadzenie. A rtykuł przedstawia zagadnienie niepełnosprawności z perspektywy literacko-prawnej. A utorzy uwzględniają kwestię niepełnosprawności jako zjawiska społecznego, będącego nieodłącznym elementem każdego środowiska i kultury, a także przedmiotem istotnych badań. Ważnym wątkiem artykułu uczyniono przeobrażenie postrzegania niepełnosprawności na przestrzeni wieków. Za konkretny przykład jej uobecnienia posłużyła trylogia Morze Drzazg Joe A bercrombiego. W szkicu poruszona została ponadto kwestia zmian w postrzeganiu oraz traktowaniu osób z niepełnosprawnościami, jak również wprowadzania przepisów i edukacji społecznej w celu maksymalnego zapewnienia osobom z niepełnosprawnościami równych szans funkcjonowania w społeczeństwie. Cel. Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie wizerunku osób z niepełnosprawnością w prozie adresowanej do młodego odbiorcy, z uwzględnieniem kontekstu studiów nad niepełnosprawnością oraz regulacji prawnych. Materiały i metody. Artykuł ma charakter opisowy i analityczny, wykorzystuje narzędzia charakterystyczne dla pracy filologa (m.in. eksplikacja tekstu, children’s studies, disability studies) i prawnika (studium literatury, analiza dokumentów). Wyniki. Z analizy źródeł oraz obserwacji i badań wynika, że sukcesywnie zwiększa się otwartość na potrzeby osób z niepełnosprawnością oraz edukacja w tym zakresie, również poprzez literaturę piękną.

    The article discusses selected male and female Italian writers whose works were published in Polish between 1887 and 1939. The history of translations of distinguished authors (Collodi, De Amicis, Salgari) and selected female Italian writers is analysed. The article presents also “short” life histories of Polish translators who worked in the years 1923-1939. It was through their effort and dedication that Polish children of the inter-war period were introduced to Italian literature for young readers.

    In 2008-2018, the Polish market of young readers’ books was subject to various fluctuations related to economic determinants, demogra-phy and changing cultural trends or fashions. The dynamics of sales was determined by best-selling fantasy series coming mainly from the Anglo-Saxon literature. Although Harry Potter was not followed by an equally successful novel cycle, the main elements of its marketing strategy have been duplicated and continued. An important reinforce-ment of the message was the screening of a particular plot, and thus its multiplication in various media channels. Fantasy themes often re-ferring to the elements of horror, Gothic novels, and even dystopian thrillers dominated. Generic syncretism and even various formal ex-periments in the spirit of deconstruction have become characteristic of the contemporary youth book market. In contrast, the list of awards of the Polish section of the IBBY stands in opposition to this trend, which promoted, in the overwhelming majority, novels of morals na-ture, addressing difficult and controversial problems of adolescence, interpersonal relationships, otherness, etc. In this context, we can ob-serve a change in the values promoted and a transition from an edu-cative normative system to glorifying freedom and tolerance towards a wide range of behaviors and attitudes.
    W latach 20082018 polski rynek wydawniczy książek dla młodzieży podlegał rozmaitym fluktuacjom związanym zarówno z determinantami ekonomicznymi, demografią, jak i zmieniającymi się modami oraz trendami kulturowymi. Dynamikę sprzedaży wyznaczyły bestsellerowe cykle fantastyczne pochodzące głównie z kręgu literatury anglosaskiej. Po Harrym Potterze nie pojawił się już wprawdzie równie dobrze sprzedający się cykl powieściowy, ale główne elementy jego strategii marketingowej były w dalszym ciągu powielane i kontynuowane. Istotnym wzmocnieniem przekazu stawała się ekranizacja określonej fabuły, a co za tym idzie jej multiplikacja w różnych kanałach medialnych. Triumfy święciła tematyka fantastyczna odwołująca się często do elementów horroru, powieści gotyckiej, dystopii, a nawet thrillera. Charakterystyczny dla współczesnego rynku książki młodzieżowej stał się synkretyzm rodzajowy oraz rozmaite eksperymenty formalne w duchu dekonstrukcji. Niejako w opozycji do tego nurtu stoi natomiast lista nagród polskiej sekcji IBBY, w której promowano w przeważającej liczbie książki o charakterze obyczajowym, podejmujące trudne i kontrowersyjne problemy dojrzewania, kontaktów międzyludzkich, odmienności itp. W tym kontekście można obserwować zmianę propagowanych wartości i przechodzenie od wychowawczego systemu normatywnego ku gloryfikacji wolności i tolerancji względem szerokiego spektrum zachowań i postaw.

Na podstawie materiałów dostarczonych przez Wydawnictwo i rozmów z redaktorami starano się ukazać problem odpowiedzialności edytora przygotowującego lektury dla młodego czytelnika. Uwzględniono kwestie dotyczące wychowania – wydawcy literatury dla młodych odbiorców powinni pamiętać o szczególnym jej charakterze, czyli kodach wartości wpisywanych w każdy utwór dla nich przeznaczony.
    The short text attempts to present, on the basis of materials furnished by the Publisher and the conversations with the editors, the problem of the editor’s responsibility for a young reader who is charged with the task of preparing such works for this kind of reader. On the basis of the activities of the Wydawnictwo Akapit Press Sp. z o.o. in Łódź the problems associated with the editorship of works for children and young people was presented. The text covers the problems associated with education, which means that the editors of literature intended for young readers should remember about the peculiar nature of such works i.e. the code of values inscribed into works intended for such readers.

    The aim of this paper is to offer a comprehensive review of Polish research on translations of children’s and young adult literature. In the first part, I outline which disciplines are represented by Polish researchers who specialise in this subdiscipline, and then I present in chronological order the development of research from the 1960s, through the fertile period of the turn of the millennium, to the most recent years. Furthermore, I outline the general trends and orientations visible in research on this type of translation, placing particular attention on Polish researchers’ references to general research in Translation Studies.
    L’obiettivo del presente articolo è quello di offrire un’ampia rassegna degli studi polacchi sulle traduzioni di letteratura per l’infanzia e l’adolescenza. Nella prima parte l’autrice specifica quali sono le discipline della scienza rappresentate dagli studiosi che si occupano di tale subdisciplina, per poi passare in rassegna cronologica lo sviluppo delle ricerche, dalla fase iniziale negli anni Sessanta fino ai tempi più recenti. Vengono individuate inoltre tendenze generali e ambiti di ricerca che si possono notare negli studi su tale tipologia di traduzioni, con un’attenzione particolare nei confronti dei richiami, da parte degli studiosi polacchi, alle ricerche inerenti alla scienza della traduzione.

    The history and publishing output of Nasza Księgarnia, Poland’s biggest publisher of children’s and young adult literature founded in 1921 and still operating, has been extensively researched by bibliologists and literature scholars over the last decades (Bylina, 1961; Aleksandrzak, 1972; Rogoż, 2009; Jamróz-Stolarska, 2014; Biernacka-Licznar, 2018a; Gawryluk, Lajborek & Korobkiewicz, 2021). However, the post-2000 productions of contemporary Polish writers and their translations into Italian have not attracted interest from Polish researchers yet. The paper aims to examine the publishing repertory of Nasza Księgarnia and identify the list of titles that made their way into the hands of the Italian reading public between 2012 and 2022. Based on the bibliometric method and interviews with the NK staff, the study generated reliable data and yielded a detailed account of the repertory released on the Italian publishing market in the last decade.
    La storia e la produzione editoriale della casa editrice Nasza Księgarnia fondata nel 1921 a Varsavia e operante fino ad oggi, è un tema che è stato oggetto di intense ricerche condotte da bibliologi e studiosi di letteratura per l’infanzia negli ultimi decenni (Bylina, 1961; Aleksandrzak, 1972; Rogoż, 2009; Jamróz-Stolarska, 2014; Biernacka-Licznar, 2018a; Gawryluk, Lajborek & Korobkiewicz, 2021). La questione del repertorio editoriale di autori polacchi contemporanei le cui opere sono state scritte dopo il 2000, e la loro traduzione in italiano, non ha finora incontrato l’interesse dei ricercatori polacchi. L’obiettivo dell’articolo è quello di analizzare il repertorio editoriale di Nasza Księgarnia e stabilire un elenco di titoli che sono stati pubblicati in Italia nel periodo 2012–2022. L’uso del metodo statistico nello studio e le interviste con le persone responsabili dell’introduzione dell’offerta editoriale sul mercato italiano hanno permesso di ottenere dati affidabili e dettagliati per descrivere il repertorio che si è affacciato sul mercato editoriale italiano nell’ ultimo decennio.

    In recent years, we have been able to observe a stronger trend to explore the educational reality by way of scientific research. This results from the pressure on quantitative indicators and evidence-based arguments. International surveys focus mainly on educational effects and provide more or less accurate rankings of educational systems and the degree of learners’ success, school and national rates. In addition to these trends, however, it is also necessary to focus one’s research on the real world of children and young learners in a holistic concept. Qualitative research strategies prefer more phenomenological and personalistic approaches based on exploratory and investigative scientific methods. Such approaches have been applied by the authors in previous studies: they have published several studies and two monographs dedicated to children who are about to begin their education and their understanding of the world. This research was supported by the VEGA 1/0598/15 “The Child at the Threshold of Education and its World” project. In this paper, the authors will present brief findings from these studies. The basic source was authentic children’s testimonies to the significant phenomena of their world and childhood. Building on these findings, we are currently focusing our research on the formation and development of the children’s readability (supported by the VEGA 1/0455/18 “Research and Development of Readability with Younger School-Age Learners” project1). There are convincing claims that this phenomenon is the most important determinant of success in education and the development of creativity and critical thinking.

    Opis:
    This article is the first attempt to present a comprehensive picture of the underground press for the young sympathizers of the main nationalist political parties and organizations under the German and Soviet occupation in 1939–1945. So far this research area has been largely ignored; the only exception was Sztuka i Naród (Art and Nation), a periodical published by the resistance group Konfederacja Narodu (Confederation of the Nation). This article includes the main bibliographical data and a list of selected publications with a fairly detailed survey of their contents. Among the titles listed are Wielka Polska (Great Poland), Młoda Polska (Young Poland), Wszechpolak (The All-Polish Youth) and Patrol (The Patrol). The article outlines their programmatic and political profiles with the help of appropriate quotations. It also tries to assess the importance of those national-Catholic periodicals in the shaping of the Polish view of the German and the Soviet occupation as well as the project of a Great Poland.
