    In Sub-Saharan Africa, agricultural commercialization is a major factor in household food diversification and household income. To move to agricultural transformation, Rwanda has focused on shifting from subsistence-based farming to market-oriented agriculture. Various studies have been conducted on agricultural commercialization, however, women’s role in the commercialization of agriculture has received little attention and none of the studies have associated it with women’s empowerment in agriculture. In Rwanda, women are principal players in agriculture and food security, therefore, it is important to understand the influence of their empowerment in agriculture on its commercialization. To investigate the relationship between women’s empowerment in agriculture and agricultural commercialization, the Women’s Empowerment in Agriculture Index (WEAI) was used to measure women’s empowerment in agriculture. A sample size of 252 households from Musanze and Burera districts in the Northern Province of Rwanda was used. It was obtained using the multistage and random sampling techniques. To analyze data, a fractional regression model was used. The results revealed that farm commercialization in Rwanda was positively and significantly influenced by WEAI score, farm size and the prices of maize, potatoes and beans. On the other hand, the index has a negative relationship with access to extension services. It is recommended that the government should strengthen policies of empowering women in agriculture.

    Opis:
    It should be stressed that farming women following their male counterparts have become more active beyond the farm household and engaged in local community issues. On the one side they seem to be still “more traditional” participants in social life, while on the other – the seem to use more modern sources of information (Internet) as well. However, one should ask: what is the main reason of this increasing of the interest in rural communities issues and, in fact, some global problems? Is this only an attempt to enlarge their capacities from farms to a broader social space? Such aspirations seem to be a part of women activities. However, it should be stressed that such aspiration seem to result from the current debate on empowerment and equal rights of women in public life as well.
    Generalnie możemy stwierdzić, że rolniczki w coraz większym stopniu „wychodzą z domu” i coraz bardziej – na równi z rolnikami – angażują się w sprawy swoich społeczności lokalnych. Jakkolwiek są jeszcze nieco bardziej „tradycyjnymi uczestnikami” życia społecznego – w szczególności w kontekście preferowanych kontaktów społecznych – to jednak uwidacznia się ich większa otwartość na pozyskiwanie informacji w sposób nowoczesny, przy wykorzystaniu źródeł internetowych. Można by jednak zapytać, co jest przyczyną tak znaczącej dynamiki wzrostu zainteresowania rolniczek problemami społeczności lokalnej i de facto problemami globalnymi? Czy tylko próba przeniesienia swoich umiejętności zdobytych podczas kierowania gospodarstwem rolnym w przestrzeń społeczną? Z pewnością takie aspiracje stają się ich udziałem. Wydaje się jednak, że uwolnienie tych aspiracji wynika wprost z toczącej się współcześnie, także w Polsce, debaty dotyczącej upodmiotowienia kobiet i ich równouprawnienia w życiu publicznym.

    Women’s economic empowerment has been South Africa’s policy priority since the country became a democracy. This paper examines the domains associated with the economic empowerment of small-scale female agro-processors in South Africa. A sequential exploratory mixed methods research design and a close-ended questionnaire were used to collect quantitative data from 503 small-scale agro-processors in five provinces. Qualitative data were collected during five focus group sessions aided by the focus group guide. The results show that production decision-making (β = 0,140; p = 0,003), access to productive resources (β = 0.140, p = 0.001), time allocation (β = 0.327, p = 0.000), and intervention (β = –0.353, p = 0.004) are the critical domains of small-scale agro-processing empowerment. The study revealed that only four domains of women’s economic empowerment have significantly improved the economic status of small-scale agro-processors. However, the combination of income, leadership, and intervention (β = 0.009, p = 0.015) was also a significant influencing factor. The study recommends that small-scale agroprocessors be provided with necessary policies and legislative control over their production decisions. This authority is coupled with broadening access to productive resources, time allocation, grants, leadership, and projects to actively empower these entrepreneurs.

    The article tackles the issue of the shift in the model of childbirth taking place in Latin American countries. Based on the analysis of 2012 documentary film Nacerby Jorge Caballero, audiovisual material from organizations dedicated to maternity care, and selected documents and legislation it focuses on representations, discourses and practices related to childbirth, in technological and natural paradigm. I argue that a shift from the technological paradigm to the natural paradigm of childbirth may contribute to the women’s empowerment and the abolition of patriarchal structures perpetuating violence
    rtykuł podejmuje problematykę zmiany modelu porodu, zachodzącej w krajach Ameryki Łacińskiej. W oparciu o analizę filmu dokumentalnego Nacer Jorge Caballero z 2012 roku, materiałów audiowizualnych organizacji zajmujących się opieką okołoporodową oraz wybranych aktów prawnych, koncentruje się na wartościach, znaczeniach, zasadach normatywnych i relacjach władzy w technologicznym i naturalnym modelu porodu. Przejście od paradygmatu technologicznego do paradygmatu naturalnego może przyczynić się do zniesienia patriarchalnych struktur utrwalających przemoc, do upodmiotowienia kobiet i budowy społeczeństwa opartego na wartościach szacunku i miłości do istot żywych.

    The promotion of gender equality and women's empowerment has been a goal of the United Nations Organization and its specialized agencies, within each one's particular scope of competencies. The World Maritime University (WMU), a postgraduate maritime university founded by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), has put in place its own policies to promote the participation of women in the maritime transport sector. The main idea behind this case study analysis is to look at how WMU's policies on gender equality and women's empowerment have evolved over time; their impact on student and employee body, curriculum, conferences and seminars; and propose areas for improvement. This research is aimed at gaining a deeper understanding of an ongoing process by exploring enrolment and hiring statistics, documents and related articles over a period of 34 years (from 1983 to 2017).
