Introduction: It is a known fact that traditional practices mothers use in increasing breast milk supply and weaning differ in different parts of countries and even among communities sharing the same city. This study was conducted to find out the use of herbal tea and some foods to increase breast milk, the traditional methods used for weaning and the factors influencing these. Materials and methods: This study is descriptive and cross-sectional. Three cities in Turkey with different levels of development in terms of geographical and socio economic regions were chosen. The data of the study were collected through a questionnaire form developed by the researchers. Results: It was found that the mothers who received breast milk increasing training the most were in eastern region, while mothers in western region fed their babies with formula since they thought their milk was not enough and this result was found to be statistically significant (p<0.05). In our study, it was found that 42.1% of the mothers resorted to some plants and foods to increase breast milk. When the mothers were asked about how they weaned their babies, it was found that 38.2% pasted things like hair and wool or put tomato paste on the breast, 26.9% applied bitter food on the nipple while 27.7% stated that the babies stopped breastfeeding spontaneously. Conclusion: It was found that mothers resorted to traditional methods to increase breast milk and to wean and that there were regional differences.

To develop a protein rich sorghum weaning food in a country with high poverty rate, the effects of adding soybeans and tiger-nut, two different ratios was formulated, R1 and R2. R1 was formulated in the ratio 5:3:2 (comprising of 50% sorghum, 30% soybean and 20% tiger nut flours) while R2 was formulated in the ratios 4:4:2 (40% sorghum, 40% soybeans and 20% tiger nut flours), respectively. Two fermentation processes was done for the ratios, starter (single) base fermentation ratios (SBFR) and spontaneous fermentation ratios (SPFR). Microbial analysis (total bacteria, yeast count, lactic acid bacteria count and enteric bacteria counts) were done after every 6 hrs of fermentation. The highest total bacterial count obtained was (4.4×105) in SPFR2 while the lowest count was 2.4×102 in SBFR1. Lactic acid bacteria range from 6.2×105 to 1.0×103. The highest enteric bacteria count was observed in SPFR1 (9.0×104) while highest yeast count (1.3×105) was observed in SPFR2. No growths were recorded for yeast and enteric bacteria after 12 to 24 hrs of fermentation for the starter based products. The results showed that the overall nutritional quality of sample SBFR1 was superior than sample SBFR2. Sample SBFR1 and had the higher total energy, protein content and reasonable amount of carbohydrates. The fermentation improves the nutritional qualities of locally produced sorghum weaning foods. Fortification of these foods with soybeans and tiger nut can be an added advantage as this may likely be a remedy to solving the menace of protein energy mal-nutrition in the developing countries and it was also confirmed that lactic acid bacteria used as starter, control the growth of yeast and enteric bacteria there by increasing the safety and shelf life of the product.

The aim of this study was to determine the effect of animal handling, defined as the so-called human factor, on the level of reproductive parameters of female mink.We analyzed some reproductive parameters of 6 348 one- and two-year-old Scanbrown females, such as fertility, prolificacy and rate of rearing the young. Mink were divided into four groups; group I and II consisted of one-year-old females, group III and IV comprised females at age two years. Individual groups of females were operated by four different teams of workers. The results indicate a strong influence of the quality of care on the parameters of breeding.
Celem pracy było określenie, jaki wpływ na poziom wybranych parametrów rozrodczych samic norek ma właściwa obsługa zwierząt, definiowana jako tak zwany czynnik ludzki. Analizie poddano wybrane parametry rozrodu 6348 samic jednorocznych i dwuletnich odmiany scanbrown, takie jak: płodność, plenność oraz wskaźnik odchowu młodych. Norki podzielono na cztery grupy, grupę I i II stanowiły samice jednoroczne, grupę III i IV samice dwuletnie. Poszczególne grupy samic obsługiwane były przez cztery różne zespoły pracowników. Uzyskane wyniki wskazują na duży wpływ jakości obsługi zwierząt na analizowane parametry rozrodu.

В 1963 г в Сельскохозяйственной опытной станции Пучнев, а в 1964 г. в Сельскохозяйственной опытной станции Желязна анализировали влияние селекционных факторов на выживальную способность ягнят. Исследования охватывали соответственно 453 и 1080 ягнят в отдельных стадах. В обоих стадах установлено существенное влияние веса тела после рождения на выживаемость, а жлияние типа родов было подтвержвено статистически в одном стаде. Влияние пола ягненка на выживаемость не было доказано, установлено лишь, что среди наиболее легких и наиболее тяжелых ягнят чаще родятся мертвые ягнята или чаще падают после родов баранчики, чем овечки. На основании проводимых только в овчарне Желязна наблюдений были установлены четкие разницы в проценте падежей между группами потомства после отдельных баранов. При средней для стада составляющей 9,47%, в группе с наименьшими потерями участие падежей составляло 2,27%, а в самой плохой группе в этом отношении оно составляло 20,87%. Это указывает на возможность ведения отбора на указанный признак.
The effect of breeding factors on the survival ability was analyzed in 1985 at the Agricultural Experiment Station Puczniew and in 1984 at the Agricultural Experiment Station Żelazna. The analysis comprised 453 and 1080 lambs in suitable flocks. In both flocks a significant effect of the body weight after birth on the survival was found and the effect of this birth type was statistically confirmed in one flock. The lamb sex effect on the survival has not been proved, although it has been found that among the lightest and heaviest lambs more frequent stillbirths and/or deaths of born ram-lambs than ewe-lambs took place. The observations, which were performed at Żelazna only, proved significant differences in the per cent of losses between progeny groups after particular rams. For the mean for flock amounting to 9.47 % in the group of the least losses this difference was 2.27 .% and in the worst group - 20.87 %. This would suggest to possibility of selection for this trait.
