Opis:
The Oriental Orthodox Churches include the Churches of the Coptic and Ethiopian traditions and also of the Syrian and Armenian traditions which will not be mentioned here. The veneration of icons is similar in all the Churches of Orthodox tradition. They do speak of “veneration” of the persons represented on the icons and pictures (Christ, the Virgin and the saints). They do not speak of “adoration” or “worship” of these persons or of the icons as only God is adored, and worshiping icons would be idolatrous. This veneration is especially known in the so-called Eastern Orthodox (of the Greek, Russian, Romanian, Bulgarian, Serbian traditions)or Churches having accepted the Council of Chalcedon in 451 and the Second Council of Nicaea in 787, but also in the Oriental Orthodox Churches, which is less known.

Opis:
In the face of the escalating Iconoclast heresy in the 8th century there appeared the necessity of establishing whether the veneration of icons is justifiable from the Christian viewpoint. The debate primarily concerned the Christological question of venerating Jesus Christ’s icons. St. John of Damascus (675–749) is considered to be one of the most outstanding defenders of sacred icons. We owe to him the first Catholic theology of the icon. His work, „The Defence speeches against those who reject sacred icons” constitutes the answer given to the iconoclasts. The most important argument justifying the veneration of icons is the mystery of the incarnation of the Son of God being the image of the invisible God. The incarnation which liberates one from idolatry lies at the root of a positive vision of matter. John of Damascus refers to the ancient Christian tradition of icon veneration recognizing the word and the image as its essential elements. His teaching would play a key role during the Council of Nicaea in 787.

Opis:
This paper pertains to the relationship between the veneration of icons and the acts of their insult in nineteenth-century Imperial Russia, the starting point of which are fragments of the polemical writings of Fyodor Dostoevsky (about The Sealed Angel by Nikolai Leskov) and his novel Demons. Dostoevsky often touches on the subject of popular beliefs, reactions to inappropriate behaviour towards icons. He also deals with the issue of the material value of icons. The works of the writer (and other authors) contained descriptions of the feelings evoked by icons and the ways of handling with them among Russians. Therefore, these texts should be taken into account in future studies of nineteenth-century icons.
