Opis:
The paper describes the experiment of assessing the chosen geometric characteristics of test models with simple geometry, shaped by the FDM (fused deposition modelling) method of different materials. The influence of the material grade and the degree of infill density on the shrinkage affecting their dimensional deviations and selected surface topography parameters of printed parts was examined and compared. Three different types of materials were used to fabricate the test models, namely HDGLASS and NANOCARBON, two new fibre reinforced composites available in the market and, additionally ABS, a popular monoplastic material. An infill density ratio of 10, 50 and 90% was assumed for each material. Three specimens were made on the same printer for each infill density, which allowed to assess the repeatability of the analysed characteristics. From among many possible shapes of models, a cube was chosen as representing the simplest geometry, facilitating the measurements themselves and the interpretation of the results. New fibre-reinforced materials are more attractive in industrial applications than pure plastics (ABS) due to their mechanical properties or appearance. They are characterized by a relatively low melting point and short cooling time, after which they can return to their original geometry; however, there is a lack of detailed data on the geometric accuracy of parts made of used composite materials. The presented work was to explanatorily broaden the knowledge about the properties of composite made parts. The practical purpose of the research was that on the basis of measurements, it would be possible to indicate among the materials used that particular material whose properties and method of application would allow obtaining the best quality surface and would be the most resistant to thermal loads. An attempt was also made to explain the possible causes of the differences in the observed characteristics of the tested materials.

Opis:
Purpose: Thermoplastic materials, such as acetal (AC) and polyamide (PA), constitute an alternative to polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) based resins as the materials for removable partial dentures. However, none of the previous studies compared chewing efficiency and occlusal forces in the wearers of dentures made of various materials. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine and compare the chewing efficiency and occlusal forces in PMMA, PA and AC RPDs’ wearers. The hypothesis was that the type of denture base material shows a significant effect on chewing efficiency (expressed as a degree of food fragmentation) and occlusal force. Methods: The experiment included the group of 30 patients using removable partial dentures. The dentures made of PMMA, acetal and polyamide were tested in each patient. Each denture was worn for 90 days, with a random sequence of the denture manufacturing and insertion. After 7, 30 and 90 days of each denture wear, chewing efficiency coefficient was determined with the aid of a sieving method, and occlusal force was measured with a dynamometer. Results: The use of dentures made of PMMA or acetal was reflected by a marked increase in chewing efficiency and occlusal force. None of these parameters changed significantly with the time of denture wear. Moreover, no significant correlation was found between chewing efficiency and occlusal forces. Conclusions: Denture base material exerts significant effects on the degree of food fragmentation and the level of occlusal forces. The use of dentures and clasps made of materials with lower modulus of elasticity is associated with lower chewing efficiency and lower occlusal forces.

Opis:
The paper presents the results of a study on the water absorption capacity and solubility of biodegradable starch foams produced with single-screw extruder TS-45 with L/D=12. Two different moulding dies were used: one with a circular hole with the diameter of 3 mm and one with a ring hole with the inner diameter of 5 mm. During the extrusion process, the temperature of the cylinder ranged from 80 to 130°C and the screw speeds applied were: 100 and 130 rpm. For the application of the ring die, it was observed that regardless of the speed of the screw, the use of the raw material of higher moisture content led to the production of materials with higher solubility. As a result, the obtained materials revealed solubility at a level of 40%. The results demonstrate good solubility of the starchy fillers of the packaging, which may indicate their susceptibility to decomposition in the conditions of high ambient humidity. A statistical analysis showed a significant impact of moisture of the raw material on the WSI of starch foams used irrespective of the other parameters of the extrusion-cooking process. The raw material moisture had a significant effect on the water absorption capacity of only TPS foams produced in the ring die at the screw speed of 100 rpm.

Opis:
The aim of this work was to determine the water vapour sorption properties of thermoplastic starch filling foams processed by extrusion-cooking technique from various combinations of potato starch and two foaming agents: poly(vinyl) alcohol and Plastronfoam, in amount of 1, 2 and 3% each. Foams were processed with the single screw extruder-cooker at two different screw rotational speeds 100 and 130 r.p.m. The sorption isotherms of samples were determined and described using the Guggenheim-Anderson-de Boer model. Also, the kinetics of water vapour adsorption by foams, as a function of time, was measured and fitted with Peleg model. On the basis of the analysis the influence of the applied foaming agents, as well as the technological parameters of extrusion-cooking process in relation to water vapour adsorption by thermoplastic starch foams was demonstrated. There was no difference between the shapes of the isotherms for poly(vinyl) alcohol foams while for Plastronfoam foams a notable difference among foams extruded at 100 r.p.m. was observed in the regions of low and high humidity content. The analysis of the Guggenheim-Anderson-de Boer model parameters showed that the water molecules were less strongly bound with the foam surface when extruded at a lower screw speed.
