Opis:
The article analyzes salient aspects of Guzel Yakhina’s novel Zuleikha (Zuleikha opens her eyes) and its critical reception. First of all, the author discusses the connections of the artistic world of the novel with the Russian literary tradition with respect to the image of “the natural man”. Particular attention is paid to the treatment of the “eternal themes” of love, motherhood, faith, the formation of personality as well as to the originality with which the author approaches the topic of the mass repression of the 1930s. The predominating opinions of critics and reviewers are interpreted, and an attempt is made to indicate the reasons for the novel’s popularity with the readers.
В статье анализируются значимые аспекты романа Г. Яхиной Зулейха открывает глаза и его восприятие критикой. В частности, рассматриваются связи художественного мира романа с традициями русской литературы в изображении «естественного человека», особенности звучания вечных тем любви, материнства, веры, становления личности, своеобразие раскрытия темы репрессий 1930-х годов. Осмыслены основные тенденции суждений критиков и рецензентов, сделана попытка объяснить причины успеха романа у читателей.

The article is devoted to specific characteristics and particularities of pig healing practice in Belarusian folk veterinary system. An attention is also paid to nonverbal and verbal efforts to look after swine health. Main themes and motifs of pronouncing incantatory words concerning this thematic group are defined. A set of data makes it possible to identify regional characteristics of veterinary practice of swine treatment in Belarus.

The purpose of this paper is to show the correlation between poetry of Zinaida Gippius and works of Leon Baksta. Emphasizing motives common for both authors such as fascination with theatre and art of ancient civilizations makes possible to present the connection between poetry and painting which is of special interest of comparative studies. The comparative analysis of the authors’ works has revealed a profound impact their biographies had on the quality and meaning of their artistic creations. This paper has also presented motif of the death, symbolic meaning of flowers and fascination with theater common for both authors. Zinaida Gippius and Leon Bakst created moving, dynamic and vibrant works and tackled with the most important questions looming out of loneliness.

Tematem artykułu jest sytuacja kursów języka i literatury polskiej na uniwersytetach w Ameryce Połnocnej. Zmniejszająca się liczba studentów zainteresowanych zajęciami z kultury polskiej, będąca wynikiem wielu czynników, prowadzi do ograniczania kursów. Sytuacji nie pomaga łączenie wydziałów slawistycznych z germanistycznymi. W ostatnich latach wzrasta natomiast zainteresowanie tematyką polsko-żydowską, co może pomóc w rozwinięciu np. lektoratów językowych nie tylko jako kursów skierowanych do odbiorców poszukujących tożsamościowych wartości języka, ale także polszczyzny jako języka świadectw Zagłady Żydów.
This article discusses the current situation of courses in Polish language and literature at North American universities. Diminishing interest in Polish culture, caused by a variety of factors, has resulted in limited offerings of courses on this subject. The common fusion of Slavic and German Departments in North America does not help to reverse this trend. In current years, however, there has been a growing interest in Polish-Jewish themes. This, in turn, might lead to a renewed interest in Polish courses; for instance, the Polish language can be taught not simply with heritage students in mind but also as an important language for reading Holocaust testimonies.

The article is dedicated to a novel by Józef Ignacy Kraszewski, originally published under the title Syrena [The Mermaid] in the Warsaw paper Gazeta Codzienna [The Everyday Daily] in 1859, then as a book under the title Piękna pani [The Beautiful Lady] in Lviv in 1871. The novel was appraised negatively by literary critics, mainly due to the role played in it by a strong demonic female figure threatening the male world, which for the reviewers was difficult to accept. Taking into account the contexts of Kraszewski’s other novels (e.g. the novel Orbeka, 1867) which presented the image of the femme fatale and feminocentric mythological themes, the article proposes a reading of this work as an open, ambiguous, controversial text, and thus one creatively recorded in the history of the 19th-century literature and criticism. The mermaid’s silence mentioned in the title becomes a metaphor for what is not said directly in the novel and what is connected to the experience of femininity – an experience that is disturbing, difficult, painful – the metaphor also translating into the Polish collective experience. 
Artykuł dotyczy powieści Józefa Ignacego Kraszewskiego, opublikowanej pierwotnie pod tytułem Syrena w warszawskiej „Gazecie Codziennej” z 1859 roku, a następnie w wersji książkowej pod tytułem Piękna pani we Lwowie w 1871 roku. Powieść została negatywnie oceniona przez krytykę literacką, co miało związek przede wszystkim z trudną do zaakceptowania przez recenzentów rolą, jaką odgrywała w powieści silna, demoniczna postać kobieca zagrażająca światu męskiemu. Biorąc pod uwagę konteksty innych powieści Kraszewskiego (np. powieść Orbeka, 1867), prezentujących wizerunek femme fatale oraz feminocentryczne wątki mitologiczne, w artykule przedstawiono propozycję lektury tego utworu jako dzieła otwartego, wieloznacznego, wywołującego kontrowersje, a tym samym twórczo zapisanego w historii literatury i krytyki XIX wieku. Tytułowe milczenie syreny staje się metaforą tego, co w powieści nie zostało wypowiedziane wprost, a co wiąże się z doświadczeniem kobiecości – niepokojącym, trudnym, bolesnym, przekładającą się również na polskie doświadczenie zbiorowe.

W artykule pokazano liczne możliwości podjęcia analizy językoznawczej filmów zawierających wątki futurystyczne i cyberpunkowe. Dokonany przeze mnie wybór materiału badawczego był nietypowy. Większość wybranych seriali telewizyjnych nie stanowi klasycznego przykładu analizowanej przeze mnie literatury i jej adaptacji. Próbowałem odnaleźć i opisać popkulturowe produkty tylko zainspirowane literaturą futurystyczną i cyberpunkową; takie, które nie muszą spełniać wszystkich warunków stawianych pracom tego nurtu, np. Westworld (HBO), Doctor Who (BBC) and Mr. Robot (USA Network). Moim celem było zebranie i omówienie interesujących jednostek językowym i ich najróżniejszych złożonych zastosowań, które mogą interesować badaczy retoryki i językoznawców. Niektóre audiowizualne utwory opisałem jedynie pokrótce. Stanowić mają one zaproszenie do dalszych badawczych aktywności: Black Mirror (Channel 4 / Netflix), Extant (CBS).
The purpose of this paper was to show a number of linguistic analysis possibilities of futuristic and cyberpunk movie themes. My choice of material was untypical; Many of my chosen TV-shows were not the classical example of analyzed type of literature and its adaptations. I attempted to find and describe popculture products inspired by futuristic and cyberpunk literature, which don’t have to meet all the conditions for being defined as cyberpunk work, for example: Westworld (HBO), Doctor Who (BBC), and Mr. Robot (USA Network). My goal was to collect and discuss interesting language units and their combinations which may be used as material in rhetoric and linguistic studies. Some of the examples used were only succinctly described as an invitation to further scholarly activities: Black Mirror (Channel 4 / Netflix), Extant (CBS).

Prezentowany tekst jest rodzajem artykułu oryginalnego. Celem jest ukazanie wartości sacrum i sanctum kreowanych w polskich pieśniach religijnych powstałych po 1945 roku. Autorka w trakcie badań posłużyła się przede wszystkim analizą tekstu słownego pieśni, ale również wzięła pod uwagę elementy dzieła muzycznego. Główne wyniki analiz ujawniły wpisane w teksty repertuaru pieśniowego wartości sacrum i sanctum, które przejawiają się poprzez tematykę, używane zwroty, specyficznej poetyce sacrum i wynikającym z niej sakralnym charakterze pieśni będących nośnikiem wartości religijnych oraz w strukturze pieśni, w którą wpisani są nadawca i odbiorca wartości sacrum i sanctum. Wyniki analiz mogą stanowić podstawę do dalszych badań, szczególnie w zakresie recepcji pieśni oraz jej zastosowania praktycznego zarówno w pracy pedagogicznej, jak i wychowawczej, szczególnie w zakresie pedagogiki religijnej Oryginalność artykułu stanowi specyficzna perspektywa badawcza przyjęta w trakcie analiz materiału badawczego, którą jest hermeneutycznofenomenologiczne nastawienie badawcze autorki, a także całościowa analiza dzieła literacko-muzycznego jaką jest pieśń.
The article presents an overview and analysis of a research study of the repertoire of Polish religious songs after 1945. The article aims to present how the religious values of sacrum and sanctum are realized in them through the medium of linguistic and musical means of expression. The author also examines the categories of religious poetry as proposed by Maria Jasińska-Wojtkowska, and considers religious songs as multi-faceted acts of auto- and social communication. A phenomenological perspective adopted by the songs encourages holiness and acts of goodness through the pursuit of God – the supreme value. The article is an original text. Its goal is to demonstrate how the religious values of sacrum and sanctum are realized through the medium of linguistic and musical means of expression in Polish religious songs created after 1945. The author considers religious songs as multi-faceted acts of auto- and social communication. The methods employed by the author are analysis of song lyrics, as well as analysis of selected aspects of the musical component of the songs. The main results are as follows: the analyses reveal that the lyrics of the religious songs are imbued with the values of sacrum and sanctum, expressed through the choice of topics, the words and phrases used, and a type of poetics specific for sacrum. As a consequence, the songs provide vessels for religious values. Moreover, the structures of the songs are such that they include, as their inherent components, the author and the addressee of the values of sacrum and sanctum. The results of the analyses may be employed further as a basis for continued research, in particular in the following areas: reception of religious songs; practical applications of the reception of religious songs, both in pedagogical work and in the context of child education and socialization, especially in terms of religious upbringing and education. The songs encourage holiness and acts of goodness through the pursuit of God, the supreme value. The article also explores the social impact religious songs have on an individual’s attitude to the world and interaction with the religious community. The article’s original contribution consists mainly in the research perspective it applies to the analyses of the research material, i.e. the author’s hermeneutic and phenomenological approach. Moreover, the article’s strong point lies in its comprehensive treatment of songs as both literary and musical works.

Ce travail vise à recenser les catégories thématiques associées au mot et la figure du citoyen dans plusieurs textes publiés en France au XVIIIe siècle avant la Révolution de 1789. L’auteur examine les principaux thèmes liés à l’apparition du mot citoyen dans les textes et les classe en catégories hyperonymiques, énumérées dans la grappe de thèmes et montre que sous la plume de quelques grands auteurs de l’époque, le mot et la figure du citoyen sont associés aux grands thèmes des Lumières comme le bonheur, la morale, la protection de la vie humaine et la vertu.
Questo lavoro vuole contribuire allo studio della figura del cittadino attraverso l'analisi tematica di diversi testi pubblicati in Francia nel XVIII secolo prima della Rivoluzione del 1789. L'autore esamina i principali temi legati all'apparizione della parola "citoyen" e li classifica nelle categorie ipernimiche elencate nel "grappe de thèmes" e mostra che negli scritti di alcuni dei maggiori autori dell'epoca, la parola e la figura del cittadino sono associate ai grandi temi dell'Illuminismo, come la felicità, la morale, la protezione della vita umana e la virtù.  
This paper aims to identify the thematic categories associated with the word and the figure of the citizen in several texts published in France in the 18th century before the Revolution of 1789. The author examines the main themes linked to the appearance of the word citoyen and classifies them in the hyperonymic categories, collected at the end of the paper in the “grappe de themes” and shows that under the pen of some great authors of the time the word and the figure of the citizen are associated with the great themes of the Enlightenment like happiness, morality, protection of human life and virtue.

The article presents the evolution of the theme of Armia Krajowa (Home Army) and the Warsaw Uprising, in Ficowski’s poetry. The theme, engaged by the poet in the late 1940s (Ołowiani żołnierze, 1948), was quickly abandoned as incompatible with the imaginary, magical direction in the development of young Ficowski’s poetry. Neither was the theme fostered by the general political background of the “dead season” of Communist Poland, by censorship, and by Ficowski’s fear of settling for the post-Romantic stereotype and patriotic myth-making. The theme returned in the 1970s (Gryps, 1979; Errata, 1981), which was related to Ficowski’s decision to liberate himself from self-censorship, and his readiness to express the once repressed content in his own, mature poetic idiom. The present study presents two aspects of historical narration in the Home-Army poems from the 1970s: the fabulous quality, which positions history in Ficowski’s private topics and intimate memory, and the scientific, naturalistic quality, which relates history to physical and cosmic categories. Both aspects redeem the poetry from the narrow specificity of Polish national myth, and make it possible to reconcile individual truth of the experience of death and suffering with the discourse of concepts and historiosophy, which also touches upon the cosmic order.

Its goal is to demonstrate how the religious values of sacrum and sanctum are realized through the medium of linguistic and musical means of expression in Polish religious songs created after 1945. The author considers religious songs as multi-faceted acts of auto- and social communication. The methods employed by the author are analysis of song lyrics, as well as analysis of selected aspects of the musical component of the songs. The main results are as follows: the analyses reveal that the lyrics of the religious songs are imbued with the values of sacrum and sanctum, expressed through the choice of topics, the words and phrases used, and a type of poetics specific for sacrum. As a consequence, the songs provide vessels for religious values. Moreover, the structures of the songs are such that they include, as their inherent components, the author and the addressee of the values of sacrum and sanctum. The results of the analyses may be employed further as a basis for continued research, in particular in the following areas: reception of religious songs; practical applications of the reception of religious songs, both in pedagogical work and in the context of child education and socialization, especially in terms of religious upbringing and education. The songs encourage holiness and acts of goodness through the pursuit of God, the supreme value. The article also explores the social impact religious songs have on an individual’s attitude to the world and interaction with the religious community. The article’s original contribution consists mainly in the research perspective it applies to the analyses of the research material, i.e. the author’s hermeneutic and phenomenological approach. Moreover, the article’s strong point lies in its comprehensive treatment of songs as both literary and musical works.

This article offers an insight to the Early Modern Polish history of law from an unusual perspective: namely, which was the contemporary view to the Polish legal and especially court system. For that, an almost unexplored Early Modern source, the unpublished Latin correspondence by the central humanist of Polish Livonia David Hilchen (1561–1610), is used. In this paper, the principal issue touched by him, his own legal proceedings in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth before the Livonian (Riga’s) and Polish courts against Riga City Council are dealt with. It presents a good example of how, despite many legal obstacles over an elongated period, a case could move from under city jurisdiction to state jurisdiction, even at a time when royal power was not at its strongest.
Artykuł umożliwia wgląd w polską historię prawa czasów wczesnonowożytnych z niezwykłej perspektywy, a mianowicie z punktu widzenia współczesnych uczestników polskiego systemu prawnego, w szczególności systemu sądowego. Z tego względu niniejsza praca prezentuje niezgłębiane dotąd źródła epoki wczesnonowożytnej, niepublikowane listy w języku łacińskim głównego humanisty Polskich Inflantów, Dawida Hilchena (1561–1610). Artykuł koncentruje się na zasadniczej kwestii wskazanej przez Hilchena, jego własnym udziale w postępowaniach przed inflanckimi (ryskimi) i polskimi sądami w powództwie przeciw Ryskiej Radzie Miasta na terytorium Rzeczypospolitej Obojga Narodów. Przypadek ten stanowi dobry przykład tego, jak łatwo sprawa, pomimo wielu obostrzeń prawnych na przestrzeni dłuższego okresu i mimo nie najsilniejszej w tym czasie władzy królewskiej, była w stanie zmienić swoją właściwość z jurysdykcji miasta na właściwość państwową.

This article examines the coverage of German themes in Polish local press by focusing on a number of newspapers and periodicals published at Siedlce in the 1930s, i.e. Gazeta Podlaska, Nowa Gazeta Podlaska, Głos Podlaski, Ziemia Siedlecka, Wiadomości Diecezjalne Podlaskie and Życie Podlasia.

Artykuł zawiera ujętą w syntetycznym skrócie panoramę sposobów i metod badania zjawiska tematów wędrownych krążących od dawna i od niedawna w obiegu kultury i sztuki filmowej. Autor opowiada się za eklektycznym, interdyscyplinarnym podejściem do tego zagadnienia, pozwalającym doraźnie wybrać najwłaściwszą z dziedzin i metod badawczych w zależności od stawianych pytań i sposobów podejścia do złożonej problematyki tematów wędrownych. Zaproponowane ujęcie nie oznacza dążenia do osiągnięcia pełnego uniwersalizmu naukowego, ale umożliwia synoptyczne rozpoznanie tego zjawiska w wybranych jego aspektach.
The article contains a synthesized panorama of means and methods of studying the phenomenon of migratory themes which have been present for longer and shorter periods of time in the context of film art and culture. The author is in favour of an eclectic, interdisciplinary approach to this issue, which will permit one to select the most appropriate discipline and research method depending on the questions asked and ways of approaching the complex subject of migratory themes. The proposed approach does not mean the pursuit of full scientific universality, but enables the synoptic identification of this phenomenon in selected aspects.
