Opis:
The aim of this paper is to examine the metaphors referring to women in Małgorzata Domagalik’s columns. The columnist shows two types of female personalities: pirania (the Piranha) and harpia (the Harpy). The author discusses how Domagalik transforms the stereotype of women using the metaphors in question. Piranhas are very insecure women who hate everything that is different, whereas harpies are extraordinary, unorthodox, and demanding a lot fromthemselves and from others. The methodological structure is based on linguistic and cultural analysis of metaphors present in Małgorzata Domagalik’s columns.

The article concerns the issue of experiencing spatial music. While discussing movement and space in music, Bohdan Pociej draws attention to two types of the spatiality of a musical work: the “inner” and “outer” spatiality. The first one comes from the nature of the sound material and the interaction of elements, it stays in the sphere of impressions, metaphors. The second one involves the physical parameters and the actual performance of the piece. The author notes that the works of composers of the 20th century tend to break through from the internal space, transforming it into the external one. The issue of the body as a centre is present in the works of Edmund Husserl, Yi-Fu Tuan, Edward Hall, and others. The metaphor of movement – concerning language and music – has become the subject of cognitive science. In the context of spatial music, the metaphorical level is combined with the physical level. During the performance of a composition, the listener may be have various relations with sound sources but always locates them concerning the location of their own body, which they treat as the centre. The two basic types of outer spatiality – the perspective of the observer and the perspective of the participant – correspond to the types of understanding of the metaphor of movement in music (internal spatiality) proposed by Steve Larson and Mark Johnson.

Reverend Józef Tischner was undoubtedly one of the most outstanding Polish philosophers of the second half of the twentieth century. What we owe to this student of Roman Ingarden is the flourishing of phenomenology and the philosophy of dialog not only in our domestic philosophical, but also sociological, psychological, and anthropological thought. His philosophy of drama is an original and very important current, which is enriched not only by the “Queen of the Sciences” but also offers great support to the related sciences, particularly sociological sciences. Within them, subjectivity is an extremely important subject of contemplation. This article is a sketch of the analysis of the benefits that a sociologist, researcher of subjectivity, can derive from reading Józef Tischner’s works.

This paper discusses ways out of an approach adopted in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, which I refer to as instrumental rationalism (pl. racjonalizm instrumentalny). It was to determine, inter alia, the place occupied by humans within an organization construed as a machine in the self-proclaimed modern era. It is one in which the substance of what we refer to as “here and now” is determined by rationality, functionality, utility, usability, effectiveness and effciency. This approach was best captured by Max Weber’s metaphor of the “iron cage” (German “Stahlhartes Gehause”, translated as “iron cage” by Talcott Parsons), although Weber himself refers to “like a light cloak, which can be thrown away any moment [...] shell as hard as steel” (Weber, 1994, p. 181).

Opis:
Wszystko to prowadzi do pytań o niezastępowalność metafory światła w myśleniu filozoficznym.
Apparently there is no metaphor more firmly established in philosophy than that of light which denotes truth, cognition, and meaning. In Plato, light is the bond that yokes together visibility and the faculty of sight. A hermeneutic analysis of the metaphor of ‘yoke’ engenders numerous issues, and the most important among them, as well as the most disturbing, is whether all we know and intuit about truth (or about our cognition, the idea of the Good, etc.) results from our knowledge of these important concepts, or rather it is a consequence of a thorough and detailed analysis of the metaphor of light itself. In other words, how much do we know about truth as such, and how much of this knowledge is our insight into the workings of light? Or is it rather the case that the tension between truth and light, the tension within the ‘yoke’ Plato refers to, does not prove as radical or aporetic as the initial alternative would suggest? Regardless of how we answer this question, it is indubitably worthwhile examining what the metaphor of light introduces into our understanding of truth, since an analysis of the metaphor in question may bring out the fundamental cognitive aporias and tensions we experience. The article analyzes, among others, the transcendent nature of light. Philosophies as diverse as Platonism, transcendental phenomenology, and the philosophy of encounter manifest a uniform approach to the understanding of light and tend to perceive its source outside the visible reality, whether they locate this source in the idea of the Good, in the transcendental ego or in Buber’s ‘Thou,’ thus considering each of them, respectively, a source of meaning. Heidegger’s considerations of the truth (aletheia) make the author confront another problem, namely, that of light obscuring darkness. However, does the issue in question concern the nature of the dark (e.g. evil) as such, or rather, does it manifest merely a language game valid within the scope of the metaphor of light? All these ideas prompt the conclusion about an irreplaceable status of the metaphor of light in philosophical thinking. Translated by Dorota Chabrajska

Opis:
In this paper the author presents an analysis of mediation in symbolic interactionism perspective, showing how in this trend the creativity of individuals is emphasized in the world of social meanings. The author shows the common elements of the mediation process and the counselling situation understood as a special experience. The paper indicates the “role” as a concept of an orientating function in an interaction. Drawing inspiration from Erving Goffman’s metaphor of the theatre, mediation participants are shown as actors of the social stage and an original theatre metaphor, applied to the mediation situation, is proposed. The author shows the dramaturgy of the mediation table, which constitutes the drama of the victim and the offender linked together by participating in the same process at the same time. Just as in a drama, there are actors, a common stage, an audience and a backstage, and the action happens according to the script. Demonstrating a different from the presented so far image of mediation helps to show its interactive and creative nature, as well as to draw attention to other-than-legal aspects of mediation in criminal cases. The presented vision of mediation reveals that the settlement written by the parties is not the only benefit of using this procedure, which, in contrast to the court trial, focuses not only on facts but also on relationships and interests of the parties. Looking at the process of mediation through the prism of a metaphor of the theatre may become a recommendation for practice, revealing the possibility of a mediator’s interference in the process, serving as inspiration and raising awareness and openness to the philosophy of restorative justice.

This article tries to outline the history of the theater of the absurd in Poland by focusing on the metaphor of theatrum mundi (a device which is characteristic feature of this type of drama) and its use by Tymoteusz Karpowicz in his dramas Dziwny pasażer [A Strange Passenger], Charon od świtu do świtu [Charon from Dawn to Dawn], Kiedy ktoś zapuka [When Somebody Knocks], Człowiek z absolutnym węchem [The Man with an Absolute Sence of Smell], Przerwa w podróży [A Break in a Journey]. This metatheatrical device enables the dramatist to create a world of playacting for its own sake, a world without God, with characters unable to look beyond the exigencies of their role and thus to express his disenchantment with the 20th century and his estrangement from the post-World War II reality. It also enables him to explore the mechanisms of theatrical performance and the role of language in the creation of reality.

Nadawca i odbiorca pozostają we wzajemnym oddziaływaniu, w którym rola eseisty polega na przekazaniu subiektywnego punktu widzenia i zachęceniu czytelnika do refleksji.
The Polish word esej comes from the English word essay and means literary sketch. The author of the essay is a person from the circle of humanities who undertakes the polemic with concrete problems, issues, track of ideologies, which for some personal reasons, I want to pay attention to. The authors mostly appear in the text by using verbs in the singular first person in the past or present tense. In his narrative he or she does not forget about the reader moving from I to we in the further parts of the text. The essayist also marks the presence of the reader in the text by using personal pronouns and possessives, and by the use of various forms of address. The sender and receiver are in mutual interaction, in which the essayist’s role rests on transmission of the subjective point of view and encouragement the reader to reflection. On the other hand the receiver’s role is the critical approach and assume an attitude to the raised issues.  A very important element in the structure of every press species is title, which is designed to encourage the reader to read and summarize text. These two functions can be implemented with the use of metaphors and subtitle. Using the titles authors can play different intertextual and metatextual games with the reader. Text frames are a fundamental element of the structural integrity of the species. The beginning of the speech is the introduction of the reader to the subject of the essay, which can be expressed directly or can be clear after reading the context. The ending of the essay is a summary of considerations: thesis, punch line or polemical opinion, which does not exhaust the content of the subject, leaving space for the reader’s own conclusions. The essay is a genre of expression, in which theessay is clearly marked subjective approach to the addressed subject. Selected issue are accurately analyzed, and a final assessment is left for the recipient.

Opis:
The article gives a brief understanding of the metaphor within the modern theory of conceptual metaphor, as well as puts forward arguments substantiating semantic, syntactic and structural differences between the metaphor and the comparison. This is indeed important for the study of the figurative system of the Old Testament, since in translation many metaphors are given in the form of comparison. At the root of any metaphor lies the sense of analogy, which makes one look for links between most distant entities and not just between objects of the sensually perceived world, but also between concrete objects and abstract notions. A systematic analysis of the metaphor (based on texts of the modern Russian language) has shown that such links are formed in strictly defined directions. Moreover, they are countable and quite concrete as in the following pairs: object→object; object→man; object→physical world; object→psychic world; object→social world; object→abstraction; animal→man; man→man; physical world→psychic world. The extensive material analyzed in the article demonstrates that the Psalter, with all its semantic and stylistic sophistication and remoteness of biblical notions from modern ones, makes use of the same laws of metaphorization as we do today except for one crucial circumstance: anthropocentricity of the modern times is substituted with theocentrism, thus making the central object of the metaphor not man, as in modern languages, but God: But You, O LORD, are a shield for me; His wrath is kindled; Grace is poured upon Your lips; It is God who arms me with strength; The LORD my God will enlighten my darkness and so on.

Opis:
The present case study in general and the multimodal analysis of the warfare metaphor in particular tend to focus on the prevalence of metaphor framing related to news schemas documented over the period of the forty-four days of an actual war - the 2020 Nagorno-Karabagh war. Certain questions (Why was the warfare metaphor so widely used in this forty-four day war? How and in what ways did this type of metaphor realize its functional aims?) are addressed in the present case study by analyzing theoretical and empirical data on the subject and by advancing my own account of the functions of the warfare metaphor in war discourse presented in mass-mediated communication. Metaphor framing and its effects usually depend on words (the linguistic or verbal metaphor), however, such effect also depend on multimodal representations of the verbal metaphor, namely on the visual image. I therefore argue that metaphor framing and metaphor effects should be examined and explicitly described within the frames of multimodal analysis which can disclose how the convergence of verbal and the visual metaphor affects rhetorical war situations and increases the audience’s reception of the message of the war. Hence, this case study will show that the wartime metaphor, with the application of multimodality, conveys information of the war and impacts public opinion, thus striving to achieve positive outcomes. The results show that metaphor framing and the given type of metaphor is encountered in actual war to draw and capture public attention through emotionally charged multimodal devices aimed at informing and impacting public opinion, thus persuading and motivating the world to take urgent steps to stop the further escalation of the conflict. The usage of such metaphor framing closely connected with the context of war might result in certain outcomes illuminating that the warfare metaphor contributes to the understanding of complexities and abstractions of war discourse at large.

Opis:
Through an analysis of several short stories by Stefan Grabiński, the article aims to show that his narrative is based on the principle of a metaphorical mirror, which exposes the dual nature of the world: matter and spirit, good and evil, world and afterworld, inner reality and outer reality. The reflected image of the world does not coincide with the real one. That image in the mirror is beyond human reason and appears as a terrifying truth and as the profound chaos of the soul. Grabiński develops the doubling of reality, which is present – with different meanings – not only in philosophical, religious, psychological and psychoanalytic thought, but also in the field of the paranormal and of parapsychology, through the theme of the double.

The paper tackles the problem of trivialization in a screen adaptation, taking as an example Nikolai Leskov’s sketch ‘The Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk’ and Roman Balayan’s 1989 film based on it. The author focuses on biblical contexts and contrasts the tone of the ending in the text with that on screen: while the literary Katerina remains unable to repent and ready to murder, the scenery toward the end of the film is surprisingly serene. In particular, the director’s treatment of the motif of ringing bells (symbolizing man’s separation from God) reveals an ideological difference between Balayan and Leskov. The author finds Balayan’s version more of a love drama than a tragedy of the death of a human soul. The film, she claims, even if not essentially distorting the meaning of the sketch, downplays and impoverishes Leskov’s semantic palette and simplifies the complex character created by the writer.

The main aim of this paper is to answer the question which appears in its title. In order to do so, I analyse the mind style of the eponymous character from Boris Akunin’s book The Decorator (1999). The notion of mind style coined by Roger Fowler relates to a unique correlation between certain linguistic constructions (metaphors, transitive patterns, underlexicalization) and their role in projecting particular world-views. The analysis shows that in the case of Akunin’s hero, who is inspired by the legendary Jack the Ripper, it is metaphors that serve the function of “consistent structural options”. They demonstrate how the murderer conceptualizes and interprets such concepts as MURDER, MURDERER, BODY and BEAUTY.

In this text the stylistic features of Polish letters of Archbishop Adam Sapieha addressed to the Primate August Hlond. To these letters, the author arrived, by inquiring in Archdiocesan Archives in Gniezno. The relevant subject of the article is five puzzling expressions in terms of usage, meaning and construction. The first example: a coterie is a single lex, the other four: real rape, journalistic nerve, thick gloves and operettas performances are constant expressions. As demonstrated by the analysis of the occurence of words and the analysis of expressions, the word coterie reveals the pejorative relation of the speaker to the circumstances described. The expression of real rape is an idiolectic metaphor and the expression of journalistic nerve is a phraseological modification. The phrase to put thick gloves as well as the expression of operetta performances are contaminations. They prove the existence of Sapieha’s individual language and the efforts of the sender of the letters to make the word and its meaning as complete as possible.

Opis:
This article examines Niccolò Machiavelli’s account of virtues in his famous work The Prince. The Italian philosopher uses three different stages or steps of argumentation. All these steps are analyzed in this paper. It is argued that in each step, Machiavelli makes partial conclusions which are neglected in the next step. In the last step, Machiavelli concludes that not only some virtues lead to failure, but all virtues are harmful to a successful leader. Instead of an honest and just way of acting, Machiavelli proposes the slyness of a fox – the most effective and successful way of acting. Cicero’s De Officiis effectively helps to understand the radicality of Machiavelli’s account of virtues. Cicero’s work enables one to explain all the central metaphors and analogies used in Machiavelli’s The Prince. Comparing Cicero’s and Machiavelli’s radically different accounts of the same virtues and vices shows that Machiavelli changed the traditional understanding of virtues, thus refuting traditional moral and political philosophy.

The paper analyzes the cognitive functions of metaphors present in both colloquial and scientific discourse. First, presented is the history of research into linguistic metaphors, followed by a discussion of the psycholinguistic turn towards metaphors as thought schemas (George Lakoff and Mark Johnson), as well as metaphoricality embodied in gestures, images and behaviors and their socio-cultural contexts. Based on the analysis of metaphors in the natural sciences, mainly in physics (Max Black, Mary Hesse, Thomas Kuhn) as well as in psychology (Douwe Draaisma), the heuristic and methodological functions of metaphors in science are discussed. Finally, on this basis, a general model of the cognitive functions of metaphor is constructed in which, apart from the cognitive communicative functions, emphasized are also the pragmatic aspects of metaphorical thinking.

This article is a result of the analysis of metaphorization process and actualization of the TIME concept in the English literature texts. The analysis has been made from different perspectives such as: historical, lexical and semantic. All the results of the article are closely related to our dissertation and based on many scientific works dedicated to the similar linguistic topics. Purpose. The purpose of the article is a more precise study of the TIME concept and its metaphorization in the English literature texts. It is very important to understand the historical formation of the process as well as its correlation with lexical and semantic aspects of the linguistic. Methods. The first method of the research is the comparative analysis of different linguists’ statement about such a phenomenon as metaphor or metaphorization. The second method is the descriptive analysis of the historical background of the TIME concept formation. The third method is the analysis of the English literature texts in order to find some lexical, semantic, stylistic, pragmatic, syntactic, linguistic and psycholinguistic patterns for the TIME concept metaphorization in this kind of texts. Results. Specific metaphor properties are the reason why a very important role in a language is dedicated to the metaphor. Language embodiment of new concepts and a creation of new linguistic manners is a direct consequence of the metaphorization process. Certain linguistic forms are a place of a realization of cognitive reality images. These images are based on a metaphorical transference. The development of the TIME concept part named as time calculation had started in early English period (XIV – XV centuries). The TIME concept has been The metaphorization phenomenon in the English literature texts. Actualization of the time concept through the metaphorical realization process metaphorically realized very differently. The metaphorization depends on the period of the English history. Modern metaphorical realization of the TIME concept has changed many times but the basic metaphorical associations remained non deformed. There are prepositions which classified by the agentic / non-agentic feature. It’s been made in order to understand time properties and in order to find correlation between the TIME concept and other aspects of the textual reality. The analysis of the chosen material has led to the distinction of five predicate groups such as: activity, location, status, quality and process. The classification of the prepositions was made in the research. They were distinguished according to the predicates. As a result models of the TIME concept description have been made. It proofs the fact that the TIME concept might be realized as the agentive, objective and dative. The using of the ‘time’ lexeme as a living initiator of the action is syntactically reasoned. This action causes the personification of time in the English culture.

The notion “edge of chaos” coined in complex systems studies has become a part of the vocabulary of modern management theory and practice. This utterance is especially significant since it has been applied in management as a metaphor associated with innovativeness and creativity. The aim of the paper is to study what are the consequences of the fact that this term is applied in management as a dead metaphor, i.e. it is decoupled from its initial meaning. A deepened analysis of the interpretations and misinterpretations of the term “organization on the edge of chaos” applied in strategic management is presented.

Being tools for discovering reality and outpouring into an imaginary world at the same time, both provide special dimension to the visual experience. Finally, both are epistemic metaphors. Since second half of 19th century copper finds a new place in mythology of the industrial object. Vast presence of copper in Flaubert’s Carthage impacts historical and oriental picturesqueness. Does Carthage resemble the legendary City of Copper?

The aim of the study is to analyse the metaphors and analogies which are used in Żywot człowieka poczciwego [The life of a humble man] to postulate the self care (recommendations concerning sagacious emulation, getting rid of finding vices). While discussing the metaphors and analogies, we pay attention to their cognitive function (the metaphor is perceived as a means of capturing abstract themes), the persuasive function (the metaphor is seen as a means of influencing the addressee) and the culture-forming function (the metaphor is viewed as a recorded exponent of the past reality and the addresser’s world of values).
