Opis:
Mobile applications for the iOS platform can be developped using the Swift and Objective-C languages. The article presents a comparison between these languages based on a created mobile game. The structure and performance of these technologies were examined. Based on three devices, languages have been tested. Aspects such as RAM load, time between views, time to save data to the database and time to save data to file were tested as a part of the analysis. Two research hypotheses have been put forward: "Swift has a better performance than Objective-C" and "Swift has a simpler structure than Objective-C". The results obtained confirm that Swift is more efficient than Objective-C. Research into the structure of codes has proven that the newer language has a simpler structure than its predecessor.
Aplikacje mobilne na platformę iOS można wytwarzać z użyciem języków Swift oraz Objective-C. Tematyką artykułu jest porównanie tych języków na przykładzie utworzonej gry mobilnej. Zbadana została struktura i wydajność omawianych technologii. Na przykładzie trzech iPhone’ów, języki zostały poddane testom. W ramach przeprowadzonej analizy wydajnościowej zostały przebadane takie aspekty jak: obciążenie pamięci RAM, czas przejścia pomiędzy widokami, czas zapisu danych do bazy oraz czas zapisu danych do pliku. Zostały postawione dwie hipotezy badawcze: “Język Swift jest wydajniejszy niż język Objective-C” oraz “Język Swift posiada prostszą strukturę niż język Objective-C”. Otrzymane wyniki potwierdzają, że Swift jest wydajniejszy niż Objective-C. Dzięki badaniom struktury kodów udowodniono, że nowszy język posiada prostszą strukturę niż jego poprzednik.

W artykule podjęta została próba analizy dramatu W.B. Yeatsa The Words upon the Window Pane (1930), w którym irlandzki pisarz i poeta prezentuje własną interpretację postaci Jonathana Swifta oraz relacji z dwoma najważniejszymi towarzyszkami jego życia. Autorka przedstawia dziekana katedry Św. Patryka w Dublinie jako figurę literacką, ukształtowaną na potrzeby tego dramatu przez Yeatsa. Za pośrednictwem tak wymyślonej maski, czy też alter ego, Yeats oddaje własne doświadczenie starości oraz twórczego i osobistego niespełnienia. Zarówno postać Swifta, jak i Yeatsa wpisane zostają w rozważania na temat cielesnej i duchowej ascezy oraz powiązane z problematyką seksualności, cielesności i pożądania. Autorka stawia tezę, iż właśnie ta sztuka stanowi punkt zwrotny w późnej twórczości Yeatsa, w której szczególną uwagę poświęca się doświadczeniu nadprzyrodzonemu oraz sposobom ukazywania motywów zaczerpniętych z irlandzkiej tradycji literackiej za pośrednictwem realistycznej formy nawiązującej do pisarstwa Ibsena.

W pracy opisano wprowadzane od niedawna przez przyrodników i adaptowane przez ekonomistów zrównoważonego rozwoju pojęcie: świadczenia (usługi) ekosystemu. Podkreślono społeczne znaczenie edukacji na temat pozamaterialnej i ekonomicznej wartości różnorodności biologicznej, pokazując jak istotne jest to dla adekwatnego systemu zarządzania wykorzystaniem i ochroną ekosystemów w tym urbicenoz. Zbadano świadomość znaczenia ptaków w urbicenozie i sympatię dla nich (na przykładzie jerzyków i jaskółek) oraz rozważono znaczenie obywatelskiej kultury przyrodniczej.
The paper depicts ecosystem services - a term that has been implemented lately by environmentalist and adapted by sustainable development economists. The social meaning of education about nonmaterial and economical meaning of biodiversity was underlined by showing how important it is for adequate activities for managing and protecting of ecosystem services, including cities. The awareness of meaning of birds in urban ecosystem and liking for them was examined on the example of swift and swallow. The meaning of environmental culture of society was pondered.

Niniejsza praca ma na celu przeprowadzenie testów wydajności języka Swift w porównaniu z językiem C++ przy wykonywaniu obliczeń statystycznych. Analizowanymi zagadnieniami poza wydajnością są przejrzystość i składnia kodu, biblioteki dostępne dla tych języków oraz wykorzystanie zasobów sprzętowych urządzenia podczas przeprowadzania testów. W tym celu przeprowadzono analizę porównawczą dwóch wyżej wymienionych języków, opierającą się na wynikach uzyskanych z serii eksperymentów przeprowadzonych przy użyciu specjalnie utworzonych aplikacji testowych. Testy polegały na liczeniu odchylenia standardowego, mediany i średnich arytmetycznej, harmonicznej i geometrycznej a w trakcie testów rejestrowano czasy wykonania, użycie pamięci operacyjnej i obciążenie procesora. Na podstawie wyników badań ustalono, że język Swift nie jest zoptymalizowany pod kątem obliczeń statystycznych
This paper aims to test Swift's performance against C++ in performing statistical calculations. The analyzed issues, apart from performance, are code transparency and syntax, libraries available for these languages and the use of device hardware resources during testing. For this purpose, a comparative analysis of the two above-mentioned languages was carried out, based on the results obtained from a series of experiments carried out with the use of specially developed test applications. The tests consisted in calculating the standard deviation, median and arithmetic, harmonic and geometric mean, and during the tests, execution times, operating memory usage and CPU load were recorded. Based on the results of the research, it was found that the Swift language is not optimized for statistical calculations.

The article aims at providing explications of the concept of a class, as it is implemented in the Swift programming language offered by Apple. The explications are framed in Minimal English, which is based on the theory of Natural Semantic Metalanguage. Detailed analysis of the Swift concept of class leads to four distinct core explications of the programming construct in question and the related feature that Swift classes possess, namely the concept of property. The article’s primary purpose is to offer a more smooth experience with programming, especially with beginners in mind. Their initial exposure to programming might face several challenges due to the complicated digital jargon of the documentation. Minimal English is implemented to ease the learning curve and promote digital literacy as one of the most fundamental skills in today’s world.

„Thank God I’m an atheist” – this was the last gasp of a dying Louis Buñuel. Culture is like a spider web of tubes and wires that are wrapped around modern art museum – the Beaubourg Centre, the Centre Pompidou in central Paris. Art is one of the tangle of tubes and wires. If we sail under the clouds of knowledge surrounding our planet, we see that by clicking on the slogan ‘humor in art’, we can easily run into long lines of virtual statements by renown suppliers of humorous -witty-funny expressions – by Mark Twain, Oscar Wilde, Woody Allen and many others. Sense of humor in art manifests itself in many ways, and in particular those that subtly but firmly make us reflect on ourselves and make us more mentally healthy. Hugo Steinhaus, for example, answered the question in his pass-port form in communist-run Poland: ‘Did you, citizen, travel abroad? No, but the border twice changed about myself’. It is an example of slapstick humor, although it is connected with not so funny a situa-tion in the People’s Republic of Poland which lasted almost half a century, from 1944 to 1989. When Joanna Szczepkowska publicly said on TV that ‘as a result of free elections, communism ended in Poland’, it was considered as funny and true a statement; so it was not simply a joke.

This article employs the concepts of spectres and haunting to analyse Graham Swift’s Mothering Sunday: A Romance (2016) as a commentary on (literary) history and its economy of spectres. Referring to Jacques Derrida’s notions of haunting, inheritance, and time, I focus on the spectres of literary modernism and the First World War to explore the ways in which Swift’s novella questions the canonical representation of modernism and revises the conventional means of writing about the past, memory, and history. The analysis of Mothering Sunday approaches the spectre as a figure of repressed otherness and a reminder of what has been excluded or silenced, so as to trace some of the ghosts that appear in the book and to underline its melancholic, spectral character. Situating Swift’s novella within the context of contemporary cultural criticism, I propose to see it as a sign of a larger cultural and critical turn, where spectres have been assimilated into the structure of the everyday and where the experience of haunting has become a major expression of the present condition.

The paper seeks to explore a practical application of Natural Semantic Metalanguage in defining two core concepts in computer programming, i.e. the concept of a variable and the concept of a constant. The investigation of both programming concepts is carried out with reference to Apple’s Swift programming language, which is now the dominant language in creating applications designed for Apple’s devices. The explications of a variable and a constant developed in this paper are tentative definitions of the most fundamental functionalities behind the two programming concepts. The paper examines, with reference to Swift’s later novels (The Light of Day, Tomorrow, Wish You Were Here), the function of his consistently employed strategies which, rather than undermine, reinforce the writer’s commitment to realism and give his narratives additional power and depth. His characters are mostly ordinary people, yet their lives are shaped or changed by a larger historical context or by dramatic events beyond their control, and often, beyond their understanding. Swift’s claim that literature brings us into contact with fire, yet we do not get burned, echoes Aristotle’s notion of catharsis. To make this contact with fire possible, Swift selects easily recognizable ordinary areas of shared human experience, which bring the reader close to the protagonist, and simultaneously establish distance by deliberate indeterminacies and refusal to provide disambiguation. A paradoxical coexistence of identification with characters and an underlying sense of suspicion on the part of the reader produce a unique version of contemporary realistic narrative with its ethical and aesthetic commitment.

W dniu 6 VII 2021 w Mogielnicy (51°41.644’N, 20°43.321’E) stwierdzono przypadek śmierci młodego jerzyka Apus apus. Był to ptak nie w pełni dojrzały, prawdopodobnie wypchnięty przez pozostałe rodzeństwo (fot.). Plastikowy sznurek zawinął się wokół skoku ptaka. Opisane zdarzenie i inne podobne wskazują, że zasiedlanie budek lęgowych, jako rekompensata utraconych miejsc lęgowych po termomodernizacji budynków przez jerzyka, wypełnionych materiałem gniazdowym po poprzednich właścicielach, może stanowić zagrożenie dla młodych jak i dorosłych ptaków. Skala tego zjawiska nie jest obecnie dostatecznie rozpoznana i powinna podlegać monitorowaniu. W celu ograniczenia tego zjawiska proponuje się coroczne czyszczenie budek z materiału gniazdowego lub ograniczenie ich dostępności poprzez zasłonięcie otworu wlotowego do czasu przylotu jerzyków.

W artykule przedstawiono wyniki analizy piętnastu regionalnych strategii innowacji (RSI) przygotowanych przez województwa w latach 2002–2005. Nacisk położono na analizę dokumentów z uwzględnieniem standardów, jakim powinny podlegać. W szczególności badano adekwatność warstwy diagnostycznej i stanowionych celów oraz wstępne działania realizacyjne pod kątem użyteczności dla osiągania celów. Badane strategie są stosunkowo zróżnicowane pod wieloma względami, zarówno jeśli chodzi o metodologię prac, jak i założenia koncepcyjne czy proponowane cele i działania. Główne wnioski akcentują sensowność podjętego przez regiony przedsięwzięcia, zwracając jednak uwagę na potrzebę ich dalszego doskonalenia (zwłaszcza wprowadzenie powszechnie aspektów jakościowych w warstwie diagnostycznej oraz większej spójności metodologicznej) oraz usunięcia podstawowej słabości, jaką jest niemożność uzyskania na podstawie tychże 15 RSI pełnego obrazu innowacyjności kraju. Dlatego kluczową rekomendacją jest – oprócz doskonalenia omawianych strategii – podjęcie pilnych badań ogólnopolskich nad innowacyjnością regionalną, które mogłyby być punktem wyjścia do stworzenia krajowego Systemu Wspierania Innowacji i Transferu Technologii SWIFT, bez niego bowiem wysiłki województw nie będą zadowalająco efektywne w skali kraju.
Article presents results of the analysis of 15 regional innovation strategies prepared by the Polish regions in the years 2002–2005. The stress was put on their conformity with the standards. In particular, adequacy of the diagnosis and objectives and character and scope of the first implementation activities were taken into account. The strategies in question turned out to be quite different as far as methodology and conceptual underpinnings adopted or objectives and activities proposed are concerned. The efforts put into RIS preparation were not in vain, however, there is a need to upgrade them up (wider use of qualitative criteria in diagnosis, improved compatibility of methodology used) and first of all to get full picture of innovativeness of Polish regions. And this is what cannot be achieved on the basis of those 15 strategies. Strongly recommended nationwide research on regional innovativeness may serve as a starting point to create national Innovation Support and Technology Transfer System SWIFT which is considered by Authors a precondition for effective utilization of regional efforts for the benefit of the country as a whole.

In 2014, Apple unveiled a completely new programming language for the iOS and OS X platforms. Swift was presented as a modern programming language, such as: safe, easy to learn and easy to use. This article presents the performance comparison between the Swift and Objective-C languages. For the purpose of the research, two applications were developed, one in each language, implementing sorting algorithms and data structures such as arrays, dictionaries and sets.
W 2014 roku firma Apple zaprezentowała nowy język programowania na platformę iOS oraz OS X. Swift został przedstawiony jako nowoczesny język programowania: bezpieczny, łatwy do nauki i prosty w użyciu. Artykuł przedstawia porównanie wydajności języków Swift i Objective-C biorąc pod uwagę czasy wykonania algorytmów. W celu przeprowadzenia badań powstały w obu językach aplikacje implementujące algorytmy sortowania oraz operacje na strukturach danych takich jak: tablice, słowniki oraz zbiory.

This article places Graham Swift’s latest novel Here We Are (2020) in the context of his previous writing and argues that much of his fiction is underpinned by the characters’ desire to transcend the limitations of their ordinary lives and to seek solace or a temporary escape within the realm of illusion. The analysis aims to demonstrate that the opposition between the two realms is the central preoccupation in Here We Are. The wish to surmount the mundane is fulfilled quite literally through the protagonist’s dedication to the practice of magic. The meaning of magic as a craft is briefly discussed, especially its quasi-religious connotations. It is also suggested that magic may be a tentative, personal answer to the problem of the “disenchantment” of the world, as diagnosed by Max Weber a hundred years ago. In Swift’s novel, far from being only a set of professional skills, magic creates an illusory realm, alternative to and more appealing than daily life.

Opis:
InP and GaAs crystal structure changes under the influence of swift Kr and Bi ions have been studied by means of scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy and selective chemical etching. The previous disordering of samples by electron irradiation has shown to lead to macrodefect formation in the form of cracks and breaks, at the depths near the ion end-of-range, and on the crystal surface. A possible explanation of the observed effects is proposed.

Opis:
The article considers the highly critical handling of the British brand of messianism in Graham Swift’s novel Waterland (1983) in the light of Jacques Lacan’s concept of the phallus. The issue is approached through the figure of the narrator’s half-brother, spawned to be the saviour of the world and the narrator’s attitude towards promises of a grand future, an epitome of Graham Swift’s overall distrust of totalising narratives. The desire for a complete and final explanation is shown to be as inescapable as it is impossible to fulfil.
