Celem opracowania jest zwrócenie uwagi na nowe wyzwania stawiane przed projektantami w procesie kształtowania współczesnych przestrzeni kultury w związku ze zmieniającymi się standardami, oczekiwaniami społecznymi, a może przede wszystkim w związku ze zmieniającą się szeroko rozumianą kulturą. Zmiana jest normą, stąd postawiony problem nie może mieć definicji skończonej, jest procesem ciągłym wymagającym bieżących aktualizacji. Zastosowano metody badań niezbędne do zdefiniowania problemu naukowego, jako wyjściowego dla dalszych opracowań, a w efekcie wskazania wytycznych wdrożeniowych: metodę analizy krytycznej, metodę obserwacji bez interwencji, metodę intuicyjną opartą na doświadczeniach osobistych. Wyniki badań pozwoliły na wyciągnięcie wniosków dotyczących kierunków kształtowania współczesnych przestrzeni kultury.
The aim of the study is to draw attention to new challenges posed to designers in the process of shaping contemporary cultural spaces in connection with changing standards, social expectations, and perhaps primarily in connection with the changing widely understood culture. Change is the norm, hence the problem can’t have a finite definition, it is a continuous process that requires ongoing updates. The research methods necessary to define the scientific problem as the starting one for further studies were applied, and as a result the implementation guidelines were indicated: the method of critical analysis, the method of observation without intervention, the intuitive method based on personal experience. The results of the research allowed to draw conclusions regarding the directions of shaping contemporary cultural spaces.

This paper attempts an interpretation of Nikolai Nosov’s novels about the adventures of Dunno, which enjoyed a cult status in the Soviet Union. Despite being children’s literature, they are examined in terms of themes that have little to do with young readers. The analysis is historical rather than literary, aiming chiefly to elucidate the cultural context and the social notions from the period of Khrushchev’s thaw. Here, the author undertakes to answer the questions concerning the extent to which the reality created by Nosov served to mould the socialist worldview as early as childhood and, simultaneously, whether it incidentally offered the adult reader an opportunity of intellectual escape into the officially condemned world.

Obiekty i zespoły architektoniczno-urbanistyczne związane z funkcjami kultury stanowią obecnie w miastach europejskich znaczące dla ich statusu i wizerunku elementy struktury przestrzennej. Współtworzą istotne sekwencje wnętrz urbanistyczno-krajobrazowych, zarówno w obrębie historycznych układów przestrzennych, jak i nowo projektowanych, w tym najczęściej poddawanych procesom rewitalizacyjnym, fragmentów tkanki miejskiej. Wielu z tych przestrzeni towarzyszą kompozycje zielone, najczęściej w postaci niewielkich klombów lub szpalerów drzew, podkreślających monumentalizm założeń urbanistycznych i architektonicznych, które mają symbolizować rangę i pozycję poszczególnych instytucji kultury. Poza historycznymi założeniami rezydencjalno-parkowymi, adaptowanymi obecnie na funkcje związane z kulturą, niezwykle rzadko zdarza się, aby skomponowana zieleń dominowała w tego typu założeniach, nie będąc przede wszystkim tłem dla architektury, ale równoprawnym, jeśli nawet nie- dominującym, elementem kształtującym miejską przestrzeń publiczną. Publikacja przywołuje kilka przykładów współczesnych realizacji takich przestrzeni w metropoliach europejskich.
Architectural and urban structures and complexes associated with cultural functions in European cities currently constitute elements of their spatial structure that are significant to their status and image. They co-create essential sequences of urban and landscape interiors, both within historical spatial layouts, as well as newly-designed ones, most commonly including those fragments of urban tissue that are subjected to urban regeneration processes. Many of these spaces are accompanied by green compositions, most commonly in the form of small flower-beds or rows of trees that highlight the monumentalism of urban and architectural complexes and which are meant to symbolise the rank and position of individual cultural institutions. Apart from historical park and residence complexes that are currently being adapted to functions associated with culture, it is very rare for arranged greenery to dominate in these types of layouts, instead of primarily serving as a background for architecture - an equally significant if not a non-dominant element that shapes urban public space. The publication refers to a number of examples of contemporary built projects of such spaces in European metropolises.

Pytanie o miejsca osób starych w mieście, na ile jest ono dla nich przestrzenią nadziei, na ile tylko „kryjówką” wyznaczają treść niniejszego artykułu. Materiał źródłowy artykułu stanowi, obok literatury przedmiotu, kilka wywiadów swobodnych przeprowadzonych w Lublinie z samymi seniorami, jak również z animatorem Forum Kultury Przestrzeni oraz pomysłodawcą projektu wspólnego fotografowania miasta przez osoby starsze i młodzież.
The functioning of the city is a constant dialogue between urban space and the participants of urban life. The results of this conversation are manifested through meanings that appear in the space, relations that are established, and places that are made. That is how the culture of space is born, how people become aware of urban polis. Older people also participate in this dialogue. The purpose of this article is to focus on the position of the elders in the city; we will try to determine whether the urban space is a place of hope or merely a hiding place for them. Source materials for the article are, besides specialist literature, interviews conducted among the elders of Lublin and an interview with the organizer of Forum Kultury Przestrzeni and with the originator of the project of joint taking pictures of Lublin by elders and teenagers.

В статье анализируется процесс формирования в коммуникативно-речевом пространстве России эзотерического дискурса, проявляющего и пропагандирующего эзотерические ценности. На периферии этого дискурса, прежде всего в медийнном пространстве, констатируется факт «вторжения» на эзотерическое «поле» ценностей массовой культуры, что на уровне речевых практик проявляется в «деформации» канонов жанров эзотерического дискурса – гороскопа и жанра массовой культуры - рекламы. Процесс этот фиксируется в целенаправленном отборе речевых и языковых средств для создания порядка дискурса.
Mystic and Esoteric Values vs Values of the Mass Culture in Communicative Practices of Russians: the Conflict of Objectives   In the article the author analyzes the process of creation in the communicative space of Russia of the esoteric discourse presenting and spreading esoteric values. On the periphery of this discourse, in the media space, we can observe the “invasion” of the mass culture into the field of esoteric values. On the level of discursive practices it occurs in deformation of the canon of esoteric genres - horoscope and mass culture genre - advertising. The process manifests in purposeful choice of language means helping to create the order of the discourse.
Mistyczno-ezoteryczne wartości vs wartości kultury masowej w komunikacyjnych praktykach Rosjan: konflikt interesów W artykule analizie został poddany proces kształtowania się w komunikacyjnej przestrzeni Rosji dyskursu ezoterycznego, przejawiającego i propagującego wartości ezoteryczne. Na peryferiach tego dyskursu, przede wszystkim w przestrzeni medialnej, zaobserwowane zostało zjawisko „wtargnięcia” do obszaru ezoterycznego wartości kultury masowej. Na poziomie praktyk dyskursywnych objawia się to w deformowaniu kanonów gatunków dyskursu ezoterycznego – horoskopu i gatunku kultury masowej – reklamy. Proces ów daje się zaobserwować w celowym doborze środków językowych w celach stworzenia porządku dyskursu.

Celem rozważań jest zwrócenie uwagi na istotę podejmowanych decyzji oraz uzyskanie przesłanek do skonstruowania sposobu postępowania we wstępnych fazach projektowania, mających wpływ na tworzenie przestrzeni dostępnych i przyjaznych dla wszystkich użytkowników, w tym dla dzieci niepełnosprawnych. Zastosowano metody badań niezbędne do zdefiniowania problemu naukowego, jako wyjściowego dla dalszych opracowań, a w efekcie wskazania wytycznych wdrożeniowych. Z badań wstępnych wynika, że oczekiwania niepełnosprawnych małoletnich pozostają poza naukową refleksją. W artykule autorka wykazała, iż obowiązkiem projektanta jest tworzenie przestrzeni, która, uwzględniając potrzeby innych użytkowników, będzie dostępna i przyjazna dla dzieci, również niepełnosprawnych. Materiał będący wynikiem badań jest wyjściowy dla dalszych opracowań, zakłada się jego popularyzację nie tylko w obszarach naukowych, ale również wśród projektantów, inwestorów czy użytkowników środowiska zbudowanego.
An aim of considerations is to pay attention to the essence of decisions being made and to receive the premises to construct the way of conduct at early stages of designing affecting the creation of spaces accessible and friendly for all users, including handicapped children. The author applied the research methods indispensable to define the scientific problem as the starting point for further elaborations and, in effect, to indicate the implementation directives. The preliminary research shows that expectations of handicapped children are beyond the scientific reflexion. In her article, the author proved that the designer’s duty should be creation of the space which, taking into considerations needs of other users, will be accessible and friendly for children, the handicapped ones, too. The material being an outcome of the research is a starting point for further elaborations; the author assumes its popularisation not only in the scientific domains but also among designers, investors or users of the built environment.

For the last decade Andrzej Stasiuk’s prose has focused on description and interpretation of the author’s numerous journeys to central and Eastern European countries, the Balkans and Asia. He talks about them with his characteristic literary disposition, thus creating a specific genre which can be defined as ‘a wanderer’s diary’ or ‘travel story’. In such works as Going to Babadag (2006), There are no expresses by the yellow roads (2013) or The East (2014), the relational layer maintained in the convention of literary reportage co-exists in an active way with the reflective layer, the artistic projection of which is the clearly marked cultural and spatial nature and the teleology of dynamic existence within its frame requires intellectual mobility in comparing distinguishing features of the Oriental and Occidental cultural systems. The author is clearly in favour of the former – it is the basic territory of his existence as a human being and an artist. Andrzej Stasiuk’s philosophy of mobility marked by nomadic thinking obviously clashes with the desire for balance in the world and his intellect rejects both the opportunity of ‘an escape to the utopia’ and acceptance of what is happening in his territory.

In 2016, the title of the European Capital of Culture was awarded to Wrocław. To celebrate the year of 2016 citizens could partake in many cultural initiatives prepared specially for this occasion. The proposals aimed at the people of Wrocław included the ECC 2016 Microgrants program, under which any citizen could realize, gain funding, as well as obtain administrative and promotional support for their designed cultural activity. Field studies conducted during the first two editions of the program served as the basis for a report, which includes conclusions regarding the perception of the urban space submitted by task performers. Low-budget cultural activities proved to be an excellent pretext for the citizens to reconsider the issues of public space in Wrocław, access to cultural events or the manner of constructing official discourses about the city and its space. This article focuses on the issue of space in the context of Microgrants 2016 and presents the outcomes of the fieldwork.

Beads have been part of the traditional dress essence of the Africans and other popular cultures of the world. Benin art is phenomena and generally accepted worldwide partly as a result of their resounding uniqueness, peculiarity and exceptional finishing of delicate forms especially those bordering on beads. These beads are used for the making of the Oba’s diadem, dresses and shoes. Some of his flywhisks are made of beads too. In contemporary time, and even in ancient period, the Oba beaded crown continue to evolve to the extent that the style of crown worn then is different from those in vogue today. The Queen Mother’s beaded crown has also gone through some significant changes and processes. Today, what we have is a profoundly gracious and courtly beaded crown. What are the other outstanding importance and weighty functions of the bead to the Benin man and woman and by extension to other popular cultures and traditions of the world? This is what this paper has unearthed, critically appraised and established.

Opis:
Why do the same planning approaches cause different results around the world? Because, even in times of globalization, there is obviously more than one way of planning. These different modes are an expression of distinct local planning cultures. Hence, we need to take a closer look at the influence of planning cultures on outcomes of urban development processes. This paper joins debates on the nature of planning culture with culture-led image production as one specific process of urban development, and asks to what degree a local planning culture might influence the production of cultural image. The paper provides a first step in building an analytical framework for analyzing image production and its interplay with local planning cultures, and gives hints on critical points in the so-called ‘cultures of image construction’.

A canon is a word of religious origin. It constituted a basic aim of education at the university level. However, that time came to an end when the idea of universality was replaced with the idea of perfection (implicitly a clerk-like perfection). Ressentiment (a repressed feeling, described by Nietzsche and later by Scheler) acts against a higher ability to enjoy cultural pleasure; it creates a contemporary human as a man of labour and utility who cannot make use of the so-called cultural assets (from the canon). Depending on which field the idea of a canon refers to, we will understand it as such. It is most associated with art where it functions as a set of models, rules and methods of creation current in a given period of culture. There are three semantic fields of the background needed to examine the notion of a canon: culture, time and space (I dedicated two chapters of the paper to each). Today, a humanist has completely new roles, since not only did culture change but also time and space – the basic “forms of sensuality”, which Kant defined as our main point of orientation and a ground for thinking about the world. Coping with the canon was mainly intended to teach good choices, not only the choices regarding texts. It may be the most important mission of humanists: to show the canon and teach how to choose one of our own. Now we are observing a kind of fear of the canon (Bloom).We are irritated with what we cannot understand. The biggest load of ressentiment lies within society, in which social equality, both political and formal, goes hand in hand with very large discrepancies in terms of actual power, wealth and education. Today, humanist reflection on culture even left the political level, related to knowledge, and entered a lower, more fundamental level connected with satisfying basic needs. The only role of a contemporary “humanist” is to free themself of illusions, i.e. also of the excess of texts. Our globalised space is ruled by quick rankings and summaries of texts. We lost the need to which art responded – to determine the eternal perspective of life.

This essay with a clearly personal touch is a narrative anchored in cultural texts which deals with experiencing Venice in a multi-faceted way. Talking about his many years of wandering around the city (in the company of, for instance, Joseph Brodsky) and describing places and architectural details important to him, the author argues that especially the mediation of painting, which also documented the history of Venice, allows for a better understanding of the phenomenon of the city. This fusion of the two modalities of experience is also reflected in the structure of the text, which closes the reflection on the contemporary condition of the city and various threats which Venice has to face.
