Opis:
This article describes use of the Generalized Algebraic Difference Approach for derivation of generic dynamic site equations. The generic equations are useful in situations of unspecific expectations with regards to the final model form where one wants to test simultaneously in a single fitting many various models and assumptions about the modeled processes. Equations derived in this work are extremely flexible with various patterns of polymorphisms and asymptotes. Even thought in principle the generic equations have more parameters, those derived with methodology proposed here are very parsimonious.

Opis:
The objectives of this work was to develop a site index models for main forest−forming tree species in Poland based on data from published yield tables. The research material include growth series of birch, European beech, common oak, red oak, European hornbeam, European ash, Norway maple, small−leaved lime, black alder, trembling aspen, locust, Douglas fir, silver fir, European larch, Scots pine, and Norway spruce. Six algebraic difference models were preliminary selected for the construction of site index model. When selecting a potential models an assumption was made, that the index system should be characterized by good fit to the empirical data, polymorphism, variable asymptotes for different sites and equality of the site index and height at a certain base age. To estimate parameters of individual models all possible combinations among height−age pairs for each tree were used. The selection of the best model was based on fit criteria describing: proportion of variance explained, error range and standard deviation of the residuals. Best fitting model was selected basing on the sum of ranks from individual criteria and for each individual tree species a separate model was selected, which fits the best growth series from the yield tables. For 16 out of 19 species, the best fit statistics were demonstrated by the model developed on the base of the function [2]. Developed models may be used both in forestry practice and forestry research in order to estimate site index for analyzed tree species.

Opis:
The aim of the research was to evaluate, under the conditions of the Niepołomice Primeval Forest, the usefulness of site index models applied in forest practice in Poland and to develop a local system of site index curves for Scots pine. The research materials included measurement results for the trees growing on 74 circular, 0.05 ha sample plots. On the basis of the completed analyses, the age−related change in stand heights in the Niepołomice Primeval Forest is different than the height growth described by means of the site index models used in forest practice in Poland. As a result of several−stage analyses, a dynamic system of site index curves was developed for the Niepołomice Primeval Forest allowing calculation of the site index, as well as forecast of the height of stands at any age.

Opis:
The aim of the study was to develop a site index model for Scots pine stands in southern Poland describing changes in height growth of stand's upper storey over time. The research material contained the height growth data obtained from an analysis of 189 tree stems. The collected material was used to develop the parameters of six dynamic growth equations which allowed to determine site productivity and predict changes in height growth of stands with age. Statistical criteria for assessing the accuracy of mapping empirical data and biological reasonableness were the basis of selection of the equation that best fits changes in height growth of the examined pine stands with age. The developed model can be used to predict the growth rate and determine the site index for Scots pine stands in southern Poland.

Opis:
Tested are three approaches to development of site dependent height age model based on published Scots pine tabular data. The approaches included fitting four−parameter modified Gompertz function individually to all site productivity classes; fitting a one−parameter anamorphic dynamic site index equation to all the data; and fitting a three−parameter polymorphic dynamic site index equation with variable asymptotes to all data. The common fit to all data was based on a base−age invariant approach, in which the site−specific parameters different for each of the site productivity classes are estimated simultaneously with the global model parameters that are common to all site productivities. The best model proved to be based on the polymorphic dynamic equation with variable asymptotes by Cieszewski [2001, Three methods of deriving advanced dynamic site equations demonstrated on Inland Douglas−fir site curves. Can. J. For. Res. 31(1): 165−173], which fitted the data best and provided one common model for all the site classes. The produced model was concluded to be superior to the other models and to the original tables. The presented approach is recommended for modeling of other stand growth attributes.

Opis:
There are no original local yield tables for Douglas fir stands grown in Poland. In the presented study we attempted to answer the question whether it is possible to successfully use the German yield tables for Douglas fir developed by Bergel [1985]. Based on the data from these yield tables we developed the height growth model (site index curves) for Douglas fir in the form of the polymorphic equation with variable asymptotes. This model appeared to be, as expected, far better than the anamorphic model. We applied the elaborated equation for calculation of the site index for 63 randomly selected research plots located on the typical Douglas fir habitat types (fresh mixed broadleaved forest and fresh broadleaved forest) in western Poland. We concluded that the mean site index values are significantly higher in younger stands than in the older ones. To determine the reason for this phenomenon, we tested the resulting model using the published data from the permanent research plots. We found out that the pattern of site index changes with age varies for stands in different age classes. Moreover, we noticed, that regardless the age of the stand, in the recent decades there is the increasing height growth rate, which can be attributed to the change in environmental conditions. On the other hand, the analysis of the other characteristics of the sample plots revealed, that there is no significant relationship between site index values and site and plot location, as well as between the productivity level, expressed by the value of the EN coefficient, and age class, site and location of the stand. Bergel yield tables can be used in Polish conditions taking into account the age−dependency of the site index values.
