    This paper presents an algorithm for searching out similar ships, implemented in a hybrid system for aiding preliminary design of ship power plant, based on new similarity functions as well as those adapted from literature sources. For searching out similar ships a multicriterial optimization method of weighed profits was applied.

    Opis:
    The images of head checking faults of railway rails have been examined by laser scattering method. The studies used the functions of similarity and distance, both for binary images and multi-level quantized ones. The analysis was performed on the basis of numerical calculations, experimentally determined images of samples of these defects. These type of functions have proven extremely useful in evaluating these faults and can be used to classify them.
    Dokonano oceny obrazów wad szyn kolejowych typu head checking, zbadanych metodą skaterometrii laserowej. W badaniach wykorzystano funkcje podobieństwa i odległości, zarówno dla obrazów zbinaryzowanych, jak i skwantowanych wielopoziomowo. Analizę przeprowadzono na podstawie obliczeń numerycznych, wyznaczonych doświadczalnie obrazów próbek tych wad. Funkcje tego typu okazały się niezwykle przydatne w ocenie tych wad i mogą być wykorzystywane do ich klasyfikacji.

    Opis:
    An interesting and little explored way to understand data is based on prototype rules (P-rules). The goal of this approach is to find optimal similarity (or distance) functions and position of prototypes to which unknown vectors are compared. In real applications similarity functions frequently involve different types of attributes, such as continuous, discrete, binary or nominal. Heterogeneous distance functions that may handle such diverse information are usually based on probability distance measure, such as the Value Difference Metrics (VDM). For continuous attributes calculation of probabilities requires estimations of probability density functions. This process requires careful selection of several parameters that may have important impact on the overall classification of accuracy. In this paper, various heterogeneous distance function based on VDM measure are presented, among them some new heterogeneous distance functions based on different types of probability estimation. Results of many numerical experiments with such distance functions are presented on artificial and real datasets, and quite simple P-rules for several heterogeneous databases extracted.

    Opis:
    The rising number of executed programs (jobs) enabled by the growing amount of available resources from Clouds, Grids, and HPC (for example) has resulted in an enormous number of jobs. Nowadays, most of the executed jobs are mainly unobserved, so unusual behavior, non-optimal resource usage, and silent faults are not systematically searched and analyzed. Job-centric monitoring enables permanent job observation and, thus, enables the analysis of monitoring data. In this paper, we show how statistic functions can be used to analyze job-centric monitoring data and how the methods compare to more-complex analysis methods. Additionally, we present the usefulness of job-centric monitoring based on practical experiences.
