Opis:
The assumption was verifi ed that for patients suffering from cancer levels of anxiety and self-esteem differ compared to other patients before surgery. 120 patients of urology were assigned to subgroups according to diagnosis (cancer vs. non-cancer) and the duration of hospitalization (5 days vs. 1 day). Patients suffering from cancer declared higher anxiety than other patients. Longer hospitalization was connected to higher anxiety. A threat-congruent difference in explicit self-esteem was revealed only between two groups: 1. cancer and long hospitalization and 2. non-cancer and short hospitalization. For implicit self-esteem the phenomenon of implicit compensation of self-esteem was predicted and confi rmed: among cancer-sufferers the Name Letter Effect was greater than among other patients. Also, in the cancerpatients group, the result of Rudman et al. (2007) was replicated: increasing anxiety was connected with increasing implicit self-esteem.

The article presents the concept of fundamental social motives, which is novel for Polish readers, and its relations with self-esteem. The studies conducted so far suggest that there may be significant correlations between various dimensions of self-esteem and fundamental motives focused on interpersonal relations (affiliation motives and mate acquisition/retention motives). Data was collected from a sample of N = 363 subjects in order to find predictors for the level and stability of self-esteem. The results include correlations between 11 scales measuring fundamental motives and self-esteem dimensions: its level and instability. Multiple regression analyses with self-esteem measures as explained variables and motives related to sociometer theory as explanatory variables were also conducted. The article presents a detailed discussion of regression analysis results for male and female samples. Limitations and future research directions are also discussed.

The relations of content of self-concept to self-esteem may reflect the role of different factors in developing self-esteem. On the basis of theories describing sources of self-esteem, we distinguished four domains of self-beliefs: agency, morality, strength and energy to act, and acceptance by others, which we hypothesized to be related to self-esteem. In two studies, involving 411 university students, the relationship between self-esteem and self-concept was examined. The results confirmed relative independence of these four domains. Self-evaluation of agency was the strongest predictor of selfesteem, followed by self-evaluation of strength and energy to act, and self-evaluation of acceptance by others. Selfevaluation regarding morality turned out to have either no or negative relationship with self-esteem. The results supported the theories assuming that either perception of one’s own agency or acceptance by others are sources of self-esteem.

Opis:
Although the importance of operational defi nitions is obvious while researching new areas of work, taking time to defi ne terms, especially key ones, is also important for mature fi elds. The study of self-esteem, for instance, is one of the oldest themes in psychology and it is characterized by work based on at least three different defi nitions of selfesteem. Each one of them has given rise to a school of thought with its own body of supportive research and fi ndings. Such situations often generate confusion in a fi eld, especially when it comes to establishing consensus or integrating material. Thus, this article fi rst presents the two-factor approach to self-esteem in order to demonstrate how defi ning it as a relationship between competence and worthiness helps to resolve issues that other leading defi nitions do not, especially the common practice of defi ning self-esteem simply as a feeling of “worth.” Second, an attempt is made to show how a two-factor approach also better integrates work on the cognitive and affective of dimensions of self-esteem.

Opis:
Purpose of the study: Main purposes of conducted studies were to assess adolescents self-esteem and to recognise the selfesteem role in the expression of anger. Material and method: The study involved 221 people (including 95 girls and 126 boys) aged 15–18 years. There have been applied a Polish adaptation of Coopersmith Self-Esteem Inventory (CSEI) by Z. Juczyński and N. Ogińska-Bulik and Z. Juczyński Anger Expression Scale (SEG) and our own survey. Results: The analysis has revealed that adolescents, who had lower self-esteem in a scholastic me perspective, more often directed their anger inward, were able to control or repress it more efficiently. On the other hand, those with higher self-esteem in a scholastic me perspective and overall higher level of their self-esteem more often directed their anger outward, both in an indirect and a direct manner. Discussion: Although the higher self-esteem is usually associated with a socially acceptable behaviour, some study results indicate stronger tendency to take an aggressive behaviour among people with the higher self-esteem. Probably, this is due to the fact that people with the higher self-esteem, seeing themselves as being worth of acceptance and respect, partially “exempt” themselves from their self-control. A satisfaction of their own behaviour might limit the readiness for self-correction of their reactions. Conclusions: Adolescents with higher self-esteem are more disposed to manifest their anger, and those with lower more frequently suppress this kind of emotions and control them more thoroughly. Overall self-esteem and one of its aspects – the scholastic me seem to be particularly important. Conviction of your own value and belief in your school success reduce the barrier to express the anger, as if they protect you from losing social attractiveness.
Cel pracy: Głównymi celami przeprowadzonych badań były ocena poczucia własnej wartości wśród młodzieży i poznanie roli poczucia własnej wartości w ekspresji gniewu. Materiał i metoda: Badaniami objęto 221 osób (95 dziewcząt i 126 chłopców) w wieku 15–18 lat. W badaniach wykorzystano Inwentarz Poczucia Własnej Wartości (CSEI) S. Coopersmitha w polskiej adaptacji Z. Juczyńskiego, Skalę Ekspresji Gniewu (SEG) autorstwa N. Ogińskiej-Bulik i Z. Juczyńskiego oraz ankietę własną. Wyniki: Analizy wykazały, że adolescenci, którzy mieli niższe poczucie własnej wartości w aspekcie ja szkolnego, częściej kierowali gniew do wewnątrz, bardziej efektywnie kontrolowali go i tłumili. Natomiast ci, którzy mieli wyższe poczucie własnej wartości w aspekcie ja szkolnego i ogólnie wyższy poziom poczucia własnej wartości, częściej kierowali gniew na zewnątrz – w sposób pośredni i bezpośredni. Przekonanie o własnej wartości i sukcesie szkolnym zmniejsza barierę uzewnętrzniania gniewu, jakby chroniły one przed utratą atrakcyjności społecznej.

Purpose: To evaluate the marital relationships, the thoughts about femininity and sexual identity, and the self-evaluation and changes in the self-esteem of women having a hysterectomy operation, during the period of both before and after surgery. Material and methods: This study was designed according to the principles of the comparative descriptive research carried out between 15 January 2013 – 15 June 2014 at Ondokuz Mayis University, Faculty of Medicine Clinic of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. The power sample size was determined to be 72. The research included 88 contactable women who were admitted to the clinic at the time of the research, who had agreed to participate in the study, and who lived in the province where the research was conducted (as the final tests were done via home visits). A questionnaire form, the Coopersmith Self Esteem Scale, and the Social Comparison Scale were used in the collection of the data. Descriptive statistics and x2 and Paired t tests were used in the data analysis. Results: Changes in the self-esteem of women having a hysterectomy were examined before surgery, one week after surgery, and three months after surgery; while there weren’t any changes in self-esteem one week after surgery, a significant decrease in the women’s self-esteem was discovered three months after surgery (p<0.01). Conclusion: It was discovered that a change in self-evaluation and self-esteem occurs after hysterectomy surgery in women.

Motherhood is a special kind of love, that connects with the child’s sex. We would like to think, that the relationship is unconditional, but having a child relates to some consequences and causes some projections, expectations, isn’t neutral. What happens when a child – equipped in particular gender – has a mental disability? What are the mothers feelings, how does she behave, when she is a mother of handicapped boy or a girl? This work contains the results of researches of psychosocial function of 115 mothers of handicapped children. Relationships between sex, coping, collective self-esteem of mothers and their personal self-esteem, social anxiety, consciousness of stigma (stereotypisation) was analyzed in this study. Results revealed, that child’s sex is meaningful for the mother. Mothers of handicapped sons have more problems than girl’s mothers. They have lower level of personal self-esteem, higher social anxiety, they show strong identification with the category of disability, feel worse in groups, prefer avoiding ways of coping, their attitude to the child’s therapy is negative.

The results of the previous research which tried to investigate links between self-esteem and narcissism in search of the source of narcissistic fragility are not consistent. The aim of the study was to contribute to the understanding of this complex relation by assessing relationships between the four facets of grandiose narcissism measured by the NPI and the two kinds of self-esteem i.e. explicit (ESE) and implicit (ISE), and by comparing the results with theoretical models. The Implicit Relational Assessment Procedure, a more recent measure based on response latency, was used to assess ISE. The analysis confirms the reports on NPI heterogeneity. Different relationships between the particular facets of narcissism and ESE/ISE were observed. These differences indicate that composite measures of narcissism and ISE do not reflect the entire complexity of the phenomena. The results provide support for the two theoretical models i.e. the global marker model and the mask model.

Body esteem, self-esteem, and sexual satisfaction influence people’s well-being so it is important to look for psychological factors that may contribute to their improvement. However, men and women differ in the factors that affect their body esteem, self-esteem, and sexual satisfaction. We analyzed links between men’s and women’s self-esteem, body esteem, sexual satisfaction, and self-compassion. The research involved 716 heterosexual participants (365 men and 351 women). All measured variables correlated positively; however, some correlations were stronger among women than among men. Mediation analyses revealed that sexual satisfaction directly affected women's body esteem but did not directly affect men's body esteem. Self-compassion and sexual satisfaction explained more variance in self-esteem and body esteem among women than among men. We explained observed differences in the contexts of the self-perception theory and the objectification theory.

Dance is a catalyst for inspiration, for creating awareness of movement and self-expression, and to make a difference in the lives of children and adults. The current generation of kids is undergoing different kinds of stress, academic pressure, peer pressure and monotonous routines. Dance can be a fantastic stress-buster. While we define meditation as “controlled brain activity”, Dance is surely a form of meditation. When one dances, the brain has to coordinate with the body and mind to completely coordinate between music and movements. Dancing to one’s favorite music and enjoying it, helps an individual focus strictly on the moment they are in. This aids in controlling the release of cortisol hormones from the brain, which helps in lowering stress and tension levels. “When the body feels good, the mind does too”. Dance can be a very therapeutic and healthy way for people to channelize any feeling that they may be experiencing. If anyone is suffering from depression, dance can give an outlet for emotions; connects you to a positive environment. Dance replaces stress hormones with pleasure hormones like endorphins and serotonins. This paper incorporates the basic principles of learning and reinforcement that are known to be effective methods in helping individuals to dance. The paper attempts to portray the author’s experiences about ‘Dance as a catalyst for stress busting’. The research methodology used are literature survey, inputs in the form of survey and personal experiences of the author. This paper publishes the results of a survey that was conducted amongst teenagers based on the students of Natyashala School of Bharatanatyam. The survey was primarily oriented to answer whether and how dance acts as a stress buster in their lives. Another, a practical experience-based approach was conducted as, an in-school Dance Program for children with special needs; catering specifically to children with Autistic disabilities is presented here. Techniques to inculcate dance as an early intervention for teenagers are also discussed. As one continues to dance, we can see how dancing will naturally develop and increase one’s self confidence and self-esteem, both on and off the dance floor, helping to further reduce the feelings of tension and pressure.   As the awareness for Autism Spectrum Disorder has increased, so have the number of therapeutic approaches. Therefore the most effective treatment or combination of treatments remains inconclusive. Creative movement and dance is a practical and feasible option for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder. This article aims to present a narrative review of the literature for dance and stress and it is hoped that parents, teachers, and educators can gain thorough understanding of how dance can be adapted for autistic children who may be thinking about implementing dance movement therapy into an autistic child's routine.

Two hypotheses concerning the relative importance of agentic versus communal traits as predictors of selfesteem were tested. The perspective hypothesis assumed that self-esteem is dominated by agency over communion because self-perceptions are formed from the agent (versus recipient) perspective. The culture hypothesis assumed that self-esteem is dominated by communal concerns in collectivistic cultures and by agentic concerns in individualistic cultures (echoed by individual differences in self-construal). Study 1 involving three samples from collectivistic countries and three from individualistic ones found that self-esteem was better predicted from self-ratings of agentic than communal traits, with the exception of collectivistic women for whom the two predictors were equal. Study 2 primed the interdependent or independent self and found self-ratings of agency to be better predictors of self-esteem than self-ratings of communion, with the exception of interdependence priming, where the two predictors were equal in strength.

The present study was designed to verify hypothesized predictor effects for five anger-related variables, i.e. trait anger, anger expression-out, anger expression-in, anger control-out, and anger-control-in. A sample of 138 students completed measures for FFM personality traits (NEO-FFI), self-esteem (SES), shyness (RCBS), and anger (STAXI-2). The study confirmed the effects of neuroticism and agreeableness as being the chief personality predictors of anger; however, for the domain of anger expression-in, an unexpected role of extraversion was revealed. Furthermore, introducing self-esteem and shyness changed some effects of FFM traits. Entering self-esteem as an additional predictor improved the predictability of anger control-in. Additionally, a mediation effect of shyness was revealed for the relation between extraversion and anger expression-in.

Aim: This study investigates the impact of assertiveness training on assertiveness and self-esteem of high school students. Method: The study employs Quasi-experimental design where 130 participants aged 13-17 years were selected randomly and assigned into two groups as experimental (N-65) and control group (N-65). Tools: For this aim Assertiveness scale (AS) and Self-esteem questionnaire (RSE) were used. Training: During the treatment phase, the experimental group received assertiveness training of 5 weeks comprising two sessions per week, and each session took 45 minutes. After treatment both experimental and control groups are measured with post-tests. Results: The results show that assertiveness training has significantly increased the assertiveness and decreased the aggression and submission in the experimental group. Also the training has significantly increased the self-esteem of students. Conclusion: The obtained findings revealed an increase in the rate of self-esteem and assertiveness and decrease in the aggression and submission of students. Hence it proved that assertiveness training is significantly effective on the assertiveness, aggression, submission and self-esteem of students.

Opis:
Based on the balance theory (Heider, 1958), we hypothesized that emotions (i.e., schadenfreude, resentment, joy and sorrow) induced by other person’s outcomes function as responses restoring balance within cognitive units consisting of the perceiver, other persons and their outcomes. As a consequence, emotional reactions towards others’ outcomes depend on the perceiver’s attitudes in such a way that outcomes of a well-liked person rise congruous responses (sorrow after failure and joy after success), while outcomes of a disliked other lead to incongruous responses (schadenfreude after failure and resentment after success). Our participants recalled a situation from their past in which somebody they liked or disliked had succeed or failed. Additionally, we manipulated whether the outcome referred to a domain where participants’ self-interest was involved or not. We analyzed the participants’ average emotional state as well as specific emotions induced by the recalled events. Consistently with expectations we found that balancing principles played a major role in shaping emotional responses to successes and failures of person who were well-liked or disliked.

Opis:
Aim of the present study is to assess the impact of hysterectomy on marital psychosexual function of women, as seen by themselves and their husbands. Assessment concerns the level of self-esteem and self-image and own sexual impressions and quality of marital sex. Material and method: Fifty marital pairs (100 persons) were assessed using the questionnaire Marital Sexual Problems” including two subscales Sexual Impressions and Quality of Sex and Self-esteem Form. The women finished basic antineoplastic treatment 6 months prior to inclusion in the psychological study. None of the spouses sought psychological or sexological assistance before. Results: Hysterectomy significantly lowered own impressions, libido level, satisfaction derived from sexual intercourse, frequency of orgasm in women treated for cancer. However, in the opinion of their partners, neither sexual response nor quality of sexual life have changed. Both groups differ significantly in the assessment of “real ego” of women, while the assessment of “ideal ego” is identical in both groups. In women, self-esteem decreased significantly after hysterectomy, but their husbands have not noticed any change. Women evaluated worst their physical features and social position, at best – their intellectual virtues and interpersonal relations. Husbands did not notice any difference in physical, intellectual and interpersonal attractiveness, but emphasized lower assessment of their emotional and social status. Conclusions: Divergence of assessment of marital sexual life, problems with self-esteem and self-image performed by women being treated for genital cancer and their husbands indicate areas of threats for marital function. Causes for these threats reside in the lack of good, open communication between partners. Thereof results incomplete knowledge of alterations in feelings, thoughts and behaviour of women induced by treatment of uterine cancer.
Materiał i metoda: Kwestionariuszem Partnerskich Problemów Seksualnych zawierającym dwie podskale – Odczucia własne i Jakość seksu – oraz Arkuszem Samooceny, badającym poziom samooceny i obraz własnej osoby, przebadano 50 par małżeńskich (łącznie 100 osób).

In general, it is beneficial and adaptive to have high self-esteem; however, contingent self-esteem depending on approval is not so advantageous. This article presents research on a Polish version of the Contingent Self-Esteem Scale (CSES), which measures contingent self-esteem. The CSES was administered on a total of 1,199 participants; a range of other instruments were also used to establish the validity of the CSES. The CSES proved to have acceptable internal consistency and validity and factor analyses revealed that it contains four factors: vulnerability to negative opinions, dependence on physical attractiveness, dependence on opinions, and dependence on self-standards. Contingent self-esteem was positively correlated with neuroticism, agreeableness, ruminating, anxiety, and maladaptive perfectionism; it was negatively correlated with general self-esteem and self-efficacy. Mediational analyses confirmed the hypothesis that low general self-esteem causes high rumination about oneself, which in turn is related to high contingent self-esteem.

Aim: The present study was designed to examine relationships between young people’s self-concepts and their perceptions of their futures Methods: High school students (n = 347) completed measures of the two domains of self‑concept, the evaluative domain, self-esteem, and the knowledge or structural domain, self-concept clarity. They also completed two measures of perceptions of their futures, optimism and future time perspective. Results: Both measures of self-concept were positively correlated with both measures of perception of the future. For both measures of perceptions of the future, regression analyses found that when perceptions of the future were regressed onto the two measures of self-concept perceptions of the future were significantly related to only self-esteem. Relationships between perceptions of the future and self-concept clarity were not significant. Analyses of mediation found that self-esteem mediated the relationship between self-concept clarity and both measures of perceptions of the future. Conclusion: Young people with a clearer sense of self and who have higher self-esteem are more optimistic and perceive a longer future than young people with a less clear sense of self and who have lower self-esteem; however, the effects of self-concept clarity disappear after the relationship between clarity and self-esteem are taken into account.

Maintaining beauty and youthfulness has always been and still is among the natural desires of women. A modern woman is a woman of success: independent, professionally successful, staying active for many years of her life. This activity as well as the influence of the media induce women to adapt to the existing patterns at all costs. Minimally invasive aesthetic medicine procedures help to repair beauty defects and reduce the ageing processes. They can have a positive influence on life and thinking by increasing well-being and atractiveness as well as helping to get rid of complexes. The aim of this paper is to assess the way in which the minimally invasive aesthetic medicine procedures affect the self-esteem of women and womens' perception of their own body. The study was conducted prospectively using a standardized questionnaire and diagnostic tools examining the perception of one's own body, self-esteem and emotional condition. The procedures performed most often were corrections with the use of hyaluronic acid and the most frequently declared motivation for the surgery was the need to increase sexual attractiveness that follows the first symptoms of aging processes. The undertaken analysis reveals that undergoing various forms of appearance correction has several psychical, physical and social effects. A significant majority of women that decided to undergo the treatments had high or average self-esteem initially, and its levels increased even further after the aesthetic surgery.

The article is an analysis of the results of the studies conducted in a group of socially maladjusted youth in whose case the family court applied educational measures, i.e. placed them in a Youth Educational Centre. The aim of the study was to find out the correlations between self-esteem, personality traits of maladjusted adolescents, and the environmental determinants (support factors and limiting factors). A total of 481 juveniles staying in Youth Educational Centres (YEC) participated in the study. The analysis showed that in the model the significant predictors of self-esteem were neuroticism, extraversion, conscientiousness and negative relations at school. The obtained research results are to be used in designing methodological solutions in order to support social rehabilitation and education activities carried out both in an open environment and in social rehabilitation facilities.

The study involved 124 people, including 65 girls and 59 boys aged 13 to 18 years old, who can be considered as youth with special educational needs. They were participants of the Krzysztof Baranowski School Under Sails in 2015 and 2016, the cruise of the 42nd General Secondary School in Warsaw in 2016 and the Catholic School Under Sails in 2017. The results show a statistically significant increase in the level of self-esteem measured with the SES scale. The level of self-esteem of participants after the cruise is significantly higher than that of their peers from standardisation groups. It can be assumed that various types of Schools Under Sails are an attractive way to educate young people.

Understanding the conditions of the ageing process accompanied by high standard of life demands to look more deeply at the elderly functioning in the context of their activity. Other important elements of life satisfaction within this life period can be individual and personal features, and self-esteem is among them. The aim is to establish if mentioned qualities are significant regarding life quality of the 55+ group age tested. This research was conducted among the participants of Third Age University. First step of the analysis was to check if and how the sample members are different in terms of their activity and self-esteem. As a result of a cluster analysis conducted on a sample two subgroups were specified, differing in terms of these qualities. The two groups were subsequently compared to each other in terms of their life quality in all four measured dimentions. The results show the existence of important statistically differences, which let us accept all the hypotheses.

In the centre of our interest stand the manifestations of adolescent self-creating endeavours in the virtual space of the social media portal called Facebook. Frequent self-photography (selfie) making, as a pronounced cultural feature of contemporary youth, and regular activity on Facebook handled as tightly connected factors; we propose that youngsters, bearing these attributes, have a different self-esteem than those adolescents who rarely or never take any photographs of themselves. In the first, quantitative part of our research the participants (N=80) filled in the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale and a questionnaire containing questions in connection with Facebook-usage (compiled by us). In the qualitative part of the research the participants took part in a half-structured interview, containing questions in connection with selfie-making (also compiled by us). Our hypothesis was not proven by the statistical analysis, no connection could be testified between frequent selfie-making and low self-esteem.

Karate is a martial art that require a high level of motor and functional abilities, discipline and mental concentration as well. Practicing Kata improves self-awareness and focus, but is not always included in a class agenda. The author’s of sensomotor communication system based exercises have combined principles of movement from martial arts for body awareness. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of 12 weeks intervention program of sensomotor communication system based exercises on static balance and self-esteem in karate pupils. In the study 24 karate pupils in the age of 7-12 were included. Training years in karate varied from 1 to 4 years of practice. To assess static balance the Flamingo balance test was used, to evaluate self-esteem, a modified Rosenger self-esteem scale was used. The findings of this study showed a positive effect on static balance and a minor positive effect on self-esteem in karate pupils after the intervention. Sensomotor communication system based exercises could be used for balance and self-esteem improvement. Also, being a more understandable and clearer exercise system, the sensomotor communication exercise program could be a Kata alternative for younger children practicing karate.

This paper investigates the impact of state self-objectification on body image and tests the role of self-esteem in this relationship. The study group consisted of 136 adolescents from a junior high school in Poland, aged 14 to 16 years: 65 boys (Mage = 15; SD = 0.79) and 71 girls (Mage = 14.93; SD = 0.82). Both age groups were relatively homogeneous in terms of demography and BMI. The study consisted of three phases. First, the participants completed demographic measures assessing demographic variables, body image, and self-esteem. The second phase was conducted one week later to induce a temporary state of self-objectification by means of a magnifying mirror. The third phase followed a ten-minute experimental exposure by filling in the Self-Objectification State Questionnaire. A mediation analysis was performed separately in both adolescent groups, according to the approach proposed by Hayes and Preacher (2014). Self-esteem mediated significantly the relationship between state self-objectification and body image. In the group of girls the mediation model produced a complete effect, whereas in the group of boys the mediation effect was partial.

The article attempts to describe adonization, a specific tactic for exerting influence which employs physical attraction, as well as its determinants. The article presents a proprietary model of determinants and motivational mechanisms which constitute the basis of the attitude toward adonization. A cycle of 3 studies on individual determinants for the attitude toward adonization was described. Results of study 1 (50 women and 50 men) confirmed that male gender, psychological masculinity, narcissism, Machiavellianism and high self-monitoring were correlates of a positive attitude toward adonization. Study 2 (36 women and 36 men) showed that extraversion was the predictor of a positive attitude toward adonization of men and women and that agreeableness was the predictor of a less positive attitude of women. In Study 3 (91 women and 88 men aged 18–63) it was established that there were no differences in the attitude toward adonization in young and middle-aged men. Comparison among young and middle-aged women proved that younger women had a more positive attitude toward adonization in the cognitive and in the affective components than older women.

Opis:
Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a chronic inflammatory disease affecting the central nervous system through the destruction of sheaths (myelin), disseminated in space and time. The aim of our work is to study the neurocognitive concept and mood disorders in patients with MS. The study includes in this study 75 cases of MS, collected at the Neurology (B) and Neurogenetics Department of Rabat Ibn Sina Hospital. The study was performed on MS patients using different scales that included: a self-questionnaire (socio-demographic, clinical), Hospital Anxiety and Depression scale (HADS), Rosenberg's Self-Esteem scale (RSE) and Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS). The mean age for the onset of the disease was 30-years, with a sex ratio of 3.4. The main clinical signs are: 69.33% and 70.67% of patients had respectively anxious and depressive disorder, which was associated with low self-esteem in 89% of them. The distribution according to the evolutionary forms of MS is 65% Relapsing Remitting (RR), 29% secondary progressive (SP) and 5% Primary Progressive (PP). As for the assessment of disability using EDSS, we note an average 4.07±1.829. That results of our study concord with other studies on the same age category. It confirms the predominance of women. They are followed by the appearance of psychological disorders such as depression anxiety and cognitive disorders. Remitting MS is the most common when compared to other forms. The anxiety and depression score was strongly correlated with the degree of self-esteem and disability.

The text is an attempt to use of Richard Borowicz research as inspiration. The aim is to broaden the perspective of research on the problem of social selection in the education system by adding a psychosocial aspect. The article contains a theoretical reference in order to allow for an explanation of the effectiveness of the mechanism of auto-selection and placement of it in the social practices of everyday life. Interactional perspective makes the problem of social inequalities present in the experience and consciousness of man. On the other hand individualistic tendencies in society are the conditions under which self-selection mechanism can both be forced out from public awareness, as well as subject to deregulation. The latter phenomenon may lead to equal opportunities.

Time Perspective is the process by which people categorize, archive and recover personal and social experiences through temporal frames (past, present, and future), influencing various aspects of human behaviour and cognition. It was proposed that it is related to selfesteem, though until now the main approach when exploring this relation was correlational. In this study, we explore a structural equation model of Time Perspective’s association with Self-Esteem. The sample was composed of 474 undergraduate students with a mean age of 19 years. The final model presented a high predictive power of Self-Esteem (R2 =.39, p < .001) and good fit indices (x2/df = 2.1, CFI = .94, GFI = .91, RMSEA = .05) with two temporal dimensions entering the model: Past Negative (βSelf-Esteem.PastNegative = -.52, p < .001) and Future-Negative (βSelf-Esteem.FutureNegative = -.17, p < .001) showing that negative affects of time dimensions (rather than positive ones) are more related to Self-Esteem. Results are discussed in relation to Self-Esteem and TP literature.

In this article we analyse how participation in a healthy life style training program affected self-esteem and positive thinking of pupils from 4 post-primary schools of Mazovia Province. Teenagers participating in “Winners’ Training” were involved in action and encouraged to take responsibility for their own development in an area of physical fitness and psychological well- being. 21 days long training, covering healthy nutrition training, intensive physical exercise training, and positive thinking training, resulted – apart from noted increase of physical parameters – in improvement of reported by participants psychological well-being, and increase of the level of their self-esteem and of the level of positive thinking The factor, which most clearly affected the variation of obtained results, was the level of commitment to the entire program on the part of school top management, which resulted in greater commitment of involved teachers, and finally in greater commitment of pupils, who put more attention and effort in the training. Teenagers voluntarily participating in the program in “more committed” schools received not only coaching, but also a lot of positive information about the program and the issues it covered, and more appreciation of their participation in it. As it seems, the increase of the measured psychological parameters resulted to greater degree from the level of individual commitment than from the measured increase of physical fitness.

Opis:
In the present paper we consider the specific relationship between communal and agentic functioning of narcissistic individuals. The study was aimed to test whether narcissist’s aggression is due to not only negative information about their agency but also positive information about their communion. Whereas the first effect is well- documented in empirical studies, the second effect has been revealed in our prior research. The results of the present study confirmed both effects: negative information about one’s agency increased aggressive tendencies (operationalized as a display of demeaning behavior) and decreased state self-esteem, while positive information about one’s communion resulted only in displaced aggression. The aggressive response to positive communal information is discussed as the success-as-aflaw effect, which we mean as inverse of the failure-as-an asset effect. According to the success-as-a-flaw effect, positive outcomes in the communal domain, considered by narcissists to be an evidence of low-status, are threatening for the grandiose self, based on the domain of agency. The social cognitive and clinical approach is employed to interpret these results.

The results of the work show that the relatively small differences in declared, negative emotional states (such as depression or anxiety) between people suffering and not suffering from cancer can be explained by the suppression of negative affect in the former. It was assumed that the suppression is related to a compensation of an automatic, affective self-assessment - i.e. implicit self-esteem, lower in cancer patients. The results confirmed that the connection of cancer and depression (similarly cancer and anxiety) became significantly stronger while the self-esteem defensiveness and past stress are statistically controlled.

The objective of the research presented in this paper was to investigate whether an association existed between the activation of the body schema and reaching adulthood among people in late adolescence. Three activities that are known to enjoy popularity among young people were analysed, namely: dancing, playing computer games that require motor involvement (e.g. Kinect), and playing computer games of an educational and entertaining character. It was assumed that the chosen forms of activity correspond to three levels of activation of the body schema. The following research methods have been applied to this study: the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (SES), the Defence Style Questionnaire (DSQ), and the Bodily Self Representation Questionnaire. The study has proven that the activation of body schema through dance is significantly related to high self-esteem and the use of mainly mature and neurotic defence mechanisms in threat situations.

The aim of the study is to compare the development of self-esteem and identity integration over time among people with disability and without it (data from norm groups), including people with a spinal cord injury as well as with disabilities caused by other reasons. The research examined self-esteem and identity integration of individuals with disability with regard to disability duration, gender, age, correlation analysis of self-esteem and identity integration. The sample consisted of 133 individuals with acquired disabilities. The study used the Polish adaptations of Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale and Multidimensional Self-Assessment Inventory. Additionally, the respondents with disability completed a form with questions about their age, gender, disability duration and its cause. The outcomes of SES and MSEI modules were checked against the norm groups. The results demonstrated that self-esteem and identity integration do not vary with regard to gender, age or acquired disability conditions. The differences between subjects with disability and the normalized group have proven to be negligible. However, the factor that turned out to be highly significant was the disability duration. Differences have been observed among groups with disability lasting up to 4 months, from 4 months to 2 years, from 2 to 6 years and over 6 years. To sum up, self-esteem and identity integration correlation proved to be high and positive. These findings suggested that the higher the self-esteem, the more integrated the identity, regardless of either the disability type or its degree. The level of self-esteem is subject to differentiation primarily due to disability duration.

Elementy konstruujące samoocenę to przede wszystkim akceptacja i odtrącenie.
Self-esteem is thinking about oneself. It is an attitude that builds mood, shapes behavior or relations with others. The basis of self-esteem are judgments and opinions about oneself. Elements that construct self-esteem are primar-ily acceptance and repulsion. The article contains the analysis of the answers of three groups (the pupils of a correctional institution, the pupils of a sports school and the people over 60 years old) referring to appearance, perception of oneself (others), position in a group (perception of leader’s features), gaining respect. The article focuses on indicating the basic information, considering the differences that are important for each group. Self-image and self-evaluation through the prism of physicality is an issue that accompanies people of all ages and life situations. As a rule, however, there are differences in the perception of certain – important – features that influence the image. Every person, in their own way, processes information about reality and at the same time assumes its appropriate image.

A sample of 339 unemployed subjects, including 236 women (69,62%) and 113 men (33,33%) was examined. The vast majority of the participants, namely 283 (83,48%), were not entitled to unemployment benefit, the remaining 56 persons (16,52%) had the right to be supported in diverse ways. The age of the subjects ranged between 19 and 60, but the mean age was 33,67. Most participants of the study used to live in rural settings and their education levels were either high or quite low (sometimes they just graduated from secondary, vocational school). The data were collected by means of a diagnostic survey/method that comprised a set of the following research tools: Social and Emotional Loneliness Scale for Adults (SELSA) by E. DiTommaso, B. Spinner; Portrait Values Questionnaire (PVQ-R2) by S. Schwartz; Self-Esteem Scale (SES) by M. Rosenberg; an additional questionnaire constructed by the author. A specific structure of the associations between certain selected variables encompassing: sense of loneliness (dependent variable), preference for values (independent variable), self-esteem (moderator variable) was unveiled. An emphasis was laid on those variables that may have been influential in the empirical realm. A stepwise multiple regression analysis allowed to find out about fairly precise features of the disclosed relationships that seemed to aspire to the autonomous conclusion.

Female breasts have been admired for a variety of reasons throughout the ages. This can influence a preoccupation with breast size. As a result, augmentation mammoplasty (AM) has become a sought-after elective cosmetic procedure, especially in western culture. Research has confirmed the psychological benefits of AM, but it has also shown that some women with a self-perceived inadequate breast size who request AM can present with psychological problems. Likewise, authorities agree that the diagnosis of breast cancer which remains one of the most frequently diagnosed cancers among women worldwide, can have an adverse effect on women psychologically, and that the number of patients who live with the psychological sequelae of both the disease and its treatment continue to rise. Several factors relate to psychological distress in women coping with these issues. In particular, self-esteem and body image-related problems faced by women can add a burden to their psychological well-being. This article reviews some of these issues and psychological treatment options to enhance women’s adjustment in this regard.

While the research literature is replete with studies focusing on the developmental factors that affect self-esteem, little attention has been paid to the source or functions of the self-esteem motive itself. The present paper aims at exploring some ways in which an evolutionary-developmental-psychological (EDP) perspective can explain the adaptive nature of self-esteem. This paper attempts to address some important issues that are the focus of evolutionary psychology, including, possible evolutionary functions of self-esteem, by focusing on two theories namely, the Terror Management Theory (TMT) and the Sociometer Theory. Additionally, this review also attempts to identify some of the links between self-esteem and social relationships using an evolutionary-developmental-psychological (EDP) framework.

This paper analyzes people’s responses to the experience of the strongest existential terror – the fear of death. The first section describes the Terror Management Theory (TMT) and its proposed ways of reducing fear: by boosting one’s self-esteem and by activating a collective system of meanings. However, much of the data discussed further in the paper shows that facts related to the experience of mortality salience are better explained and predicted by the assumption that the regulatory mechanism relies on seeking social approval and on mood regulation. This has been reflected by such surprising behavior as increased interest in one’s appearance, conspicuous consumption, or seeking power in response to confronting the idea of death. However, further studies are needed to resolve existing controversies.

The research group included 95 women after childbirth who completed the authors’ own sociodemographic questionnaire and two psychological standardized measures, the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (SES) and Marriage Communication Questionnaire by Kaźmierczak and Plopa. It was found that self-esteem proved to be a positive predictor of perceived support and commitment provided by the partner only among mothers of two or more children, whereas in single mothers perceived support did not depend on the woman’s self-esteem. At the first birth, the support from the partner is not related to the mother’s level of self-esteem.

Results: Statistical analyzes showed that women attending dance classes had significantly higher levels of self-esteem, satisfaction with life and quality of life than inactive dancers. The lack of diversity has only emerged in the metaphysical component of quality of life (U Mann-Whitney’s statistics did not turn out to be significant). Conclusions: Dance activity is associated with a higher level of quality of life of the examined women

W celu zmierzenia jakości związku skonstruowano kwestionariusz, w którym osoby badane oceniały częstość swoich zachowań w związku. Zmierzono także subiektywne poczucie jakości związku. Wyniki.
Aim. Both the level of self-esteem and its stability are connected with various areas of human life. The present research is aimed at testing whether the stability of self-esteem is related to romantic relationship satisfaction and its quality, and also whether the quality of a relationship is influenced by a partner’s level of self-esteem stability. Method. The participants in the research were 34 heterosexual couples. Participant age: 18-28 yo.,(M=22,20; SD=2,33). Self-esteem stability was measured over the span of seven days using the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale. In order to measure relationship quality, a questionaire was constructed in which participants evaluated the frequency of their behaviors within the relationship. A subjective relationship satisfaction was also measured. Results. Regression analyses have shown that the relationship quality measured by an objective measure was explained by the model in 23% (R2=0,23; p<0,00135), wherein only the effect of the participant’s self-esteem (b*=0,32; p=0,006) and their partner’s relationship quality (b*=0,35; p=0,005) were statistically significant, whereas the subjective relationship satisfaction was explained by the model in 41% (R2=0,41; p<0,001), wherein the only statistically significant effect was that of the partner’s subjective relationship satisfafction (b*=0,68; p<0,001). Conclusions. Within the text we propose several explanations of the results. The fact that the hypotheses weren’t confirmed may be explained by a lack of possibility of extrapolating the results related to self-esteem to results related to its stability. The relation between relationship quality measured for both partners and their relationship satisfaction is explained intuitively.
