Opis:
The aim of the study was to estimate the diversity of European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) seeds in Poland in the years 1992−2004. The investigation started in 1992 when seeds were collected from thirteen selected beech provenances and continued in the following period 1995−2004 with samples of seeds from Seed−Quality Assessment Laboratory. Significant differences in size, shape, vitality and weight of the beech seeds were found between crop years and regions of Poland.

Opis:
The range of variations in a given separation parameter and its relationships with other attributes have to be determined for designing seed cleaning and sorting processes. In this study, those relationships were determined for five batches of Norway spruce seeds supplied by a seed extraction plant in Jedwabno. The seeds were harvested from seed stands in northern Poland. The terminal velocity, length, width, thickness and mass of every seed were determined. The results were used to calculate the geometric mean diameter, aspect ratio, sphericity index and density of the evaluated seeds. Those parameters were compared by analysis of variance and linear correlation analysis. Similarities in the average values of all physical properties were noted only between seeds harvested in the same seed zone, from tree stands occupying the same habitat type. The analyzed seeds can be effectively separated into mass fractions with the use of traditional sorting devices such as pneumatic separators, mesh sieves with longitudinal or round openings, cylindrical graders, winnowing machines and pneumatic sieves, in order to achieve more uniform seedling emergence when each seed fraction is sown separately.

Opis:
The seeds of barley, oat, rye, and two varieties of wheat were studied during wetting thereof with special respect to changes in their mass and dimensions. Two levels of wetting were used: 6-h wetting close to the end of imbibition, and 24-h wetting close to the start of germination. The results of these experiments show that the measured quantities can be well described by the Gaussian distribution. Gaussian distribution is applied for description of the wetting effects that can be well approximated also by a second-degree polynomial of the initial state. Even though an increase in the mass, length, width, and thickness was the main effect of wetting, opposite trends in some dimensionally dependentcases were also observed. Drying of the wetted specimens led to a state that differed only slightly (less than 1%) from the initial state. Among the dimensional characteristics, the highest changes were observed in the grain length.
