Opis:
This article is devoted to the study of water and sediment pollution in the channel of the Neva delta. Spectrophotometry was used to determine the concentration of pollutants in water. In the chemical analysis of the precipitate, atomic absorption spectroscopy and infrared spectroscopy were used. Analysis of the hydrochemical composition and sediment of the Smolenka River showed high concentrations of heavy metals and petroleum products. At the same time, the hydrochemical composition of the Smolenka River is highly unstable, but the concentration of oil products and lead in the sediments indicates the presence of local pollution sources. Based on our findings, we are guided by the restoration of the aquatic environment.

Opis:
The paper deals with sediments of anthropogenic reservoirs from the central part of the Katowice Upland. Over most of the area, the original relief was considerably altered due to many-years’ mining of hard coal, historical mining and processing of zinc-lead ores, smelting of iron and non-ferrous metals, and chemical and machinery industries. The changes in land surface give rise to mining collapse areas transformed to water reservoirs. Sediment samples (103 samples in total) were collected form artificial lakes, ponds and settling ponds. Samples were air-dried, sieved through a 0.2-mm nylon sieve and digested in aqua regia. Contents ofAg, Al, As, Ba, Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mg, Mn, Mo, Ni, P Pb, S, Sn, Sr, Ti, Vand Zn in the samples were determined by the ICP-OES method. Mercury content was measured using the CV-AAS method. To assess the extent of sediment contamination the Index of Geoaccumulation (Igeo) and the ecotoxicological (Threshold Effect Concentration and Probable Effect Concentration) criterion were used. The sediments show very different chemical compositions. The content of trace elements varies from values lower than the regional geochemical background of the Silesian-Cracow region to extremely high concentrations. Distribution of many toxic chemical elements is characterized by high spatial variability and a strong dependence on the location of pollution sources. About 60% of analysed samples were heavily contaminated due to the very high concentration of cadmium (up to 905.9 mg/kg), lead (up to 25,081 mg/kg) and zinc (up to 45,361 mg/kg) as well as arsenic (up to 2,220 mg/kg), chromium (up to 901 mg/kg) and mercury (up to 11.80 mg/kg). Due to the concentration of metals (TEC and PEC values) almost 80% of the sediments can be harmful to aquatic organisms, as well as to wild animals that consume them. The main cause of harm is the very high concentrations of cadmium, lead and zinc, less of silver, arsenic, chromium, copper and nickel.

Opis:
Coastal areas in Anantigha are utilized as dumpsite for industrial and domestic wastes including effluent from local industries and inhabitants of the area despite their usage for crop cultivation. Thus, the present study was designed to assess the concentration, pollution load and ecological risk of heavy metal in Anantigha coastal area. Standard pollution indices such as contamination factor (Cf), degree of contamination, pollution load index (PLI), enrichment factor (EF), geo-accumulation index (Igeo) and ecological risk index were deployed to assess the level of heavy metals contamination in the area. The results showed that the sediment was acidic under dried conditions and low in conductivity. The mean concentration levels of all the heavy metals were lower than their mean background values except for Al. The orders of dominance for concentration of heavy metals were: Al>Fe>Mn>Cu>Zn (Station 1) and Al>Fe>Mn>Zn>Cu (Stations 2, 3 and 4). Analyzed data showed that the sediments in the area are contaminated with Al with Igeo result showing station 2 and 4 been moderately to heavily contaminated with Al while station 4 was heavily contaminated with aluminium. Station 1 had low degree of contamination, whereas station 2 and 4 had moderate degree of contamination, and station 3 showed considerable degree of contamination. The PLI result indicates unpolluted condition and the area were not enriched by the studied heavy metals as shown by EF values. Hence, the sediment in Anantigha coastal marine area was classified as having low ecological risk factor. However, the levels of these metals are not static; there is tendency for increase as a result of increased human input and activities. Hence, there is a need for regular soil testing.

Opis:
The concentrations of zinc and cadmium were determined in the sediment cores sampled from the floodplain and the channel in the middle reach of the Biała Przemsza River valley (southern Poland). The results were compared to the river water and groundwater chemistry in order to reveal the average extent of the hyporheic flow. The loss of river waters through the river bed due to the natural migration modified by the drainage of the lead-zinc ore mine caused the strong pollution of the river bed sediments with heavy metals to the depth of almost three meters below the water table in the river. Moreover, the similar groundwater and river water chemistry at that depth suggests that the vertical extent of the hyporheic zone, which exceeds a depth of several meters below the channel, can be affected by the drainage of river waters by the lead-zinc mine. The lateral extent of the hyporheic flow, indicated by changes in groundwater chemistry and elevated heavy metal concentrations in the sediments, was of the order of dozen of meters. The investigation documents the large impact of the secondary in situ enrichment of sediments with heavy metals in the hyporheic zone.

Surface sediment quality of potential rivers in Peru was evaluated using indicators of contamination, accumulation and ecological risk of heavy metals and As. Surface sediment samples were collected at 54 sampling sites in the Tishgo and Chia rivers during 2018. The determination of Cu, Pb, Zn and As was performed by flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The results revealed the decreasing order of the mean concentrations of heavy metals and As in the Chia River of Zn > Cu > As > Pb and Tishgo of Zn > Pb > As > Cu. The PLI for the Tishgo River were greater than one (PLI > 1) denoting the deterioration it has been experiencing. In the Chia River, 60% of the sampling sites indicated no appreciable contamination by these elements (PLI < 1). The Igeo values of As in both rivers showed a state of contamination, from moderately to severely contaminated. In the Tishgo River the potential ecological risk varied from low to moderate and in the Chia River from low to considerable. Finally, this study reveals the applicability of the evaluation indexes of contamination, accumulation and potential ecological risk of toxic metals so that special control measures can be adopted.

Opis:
Máchovo Lake is a historical reservoir founded by Czech King Charles IV. in 14th century. Located in northern part of central Bohemia it has been widely used for recreation purposes for many decades (or even centuries). Its catchments (ca 100 sq km) consist of intensively used agricultural land (ca 25% of area) and of large forested area under nature protection. Several other lakes (ponds) are chained on the two reservoir’s inlets. Irrespective of its great recreation potential Máchovo Lake is one of the Bohemian lakes known for its problems with eutrophication and water quality. The project was set up to point out sources of nutrients and to search for proper solutions. Sediment loads in every lake within the catchments were measured and sampled in order to quantify the nutrients and other pollution. Point and non point sources of phosphorus and other nutrients were searched. Sediment transport within catchments was modelled using WaTEM/SEDEM model. Interestingly, the water quality in the particular ponds varies signifi cantly even though each one of several hundred years old ponds is heavily silted. Soil erosion protection measures within catchments were proposed altogether with flood protection measures in the stream valleys and waste water treatment facilities in surrounding villages. Setting up water quality sampling devices in selected stream profi les was tested and designed. The continual proper management should lead to water quality improvement.

Jeddah is the most industrialized city on the west coast of Saudi Arabia and is under increasing influence of human activities. Heavy metals data were obtained from four near-coast Red Sea sediment cores in close proximity to Jeddah. Chromium, manganese, iron, copper, zinc, and lead were analyzed from depth-resolved sections of each core via heavy acid digestion and inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The average concentrations of all four sites were 245.96 mg kg1, 478.45 mg kg1, 8506.13 mg kg1, 251.82 mg kg1, 623.09 mg kg1, and 362.75 mg kg1, respectively. The depth-resolved results showed that highest concentrations of Mn, Cu, and Pb were found in the top 15 cm of the core profile distributions compared to other depth sub-samples. Heavy metal concentrations in core sediments are increased near central Jeddah and have become higher in recent years. The results of enrichment factor calculations indicate little anthropogenic supply of Mn and Cr while Pb, Zn, and Cu show strong anthropogenic input. The Pollution Load Index was higher in the two sites closer to central Jeddah where power and desalination plants and wastewater release are known. This indicates that the area has suffered from heavy metal pollution compared to other non-industrialized sites in the Red Sea. Heavy metal contaminations due to anthropogenic activity should be taken into account to protect the Red Sea during future growth. The results of this work should be considered as a baseline for heavy metals monitoring in the sediments of the Red Sea coast near Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

In order to evaluate the degree of sediment contamination by metallic trace elements in the watershed of Oued Inaouene (North-East of Morocco), samples of surface sediments were taken along the river and at the level of the Idriss 1st dam. The objective was to obtain thorough knowledge of the environment (metallic element content, organic matter content, granulometry, and pH, EC, CaCO3 content) in order to identify the degree of pollution in these sediments. The results of analysis have highlighted a contamination accentuated by Ba, Sr, P, Cu, Pb, In fact, this element is present at very high levels, with a maximum content ppm for the samples taken upstream of Oued Inaouene. This increase is related to the physicochemical conditions of the environment, despite the diversity of sources of pollutants. The analysis of hazardous heavy metals showed the values under the detection limits. The qualitative study allowed to identifying the source of contamination, it is an anthropogenic source related to the discharges of cities in vicinity of Oued Inaouene, and natural considered as the main source of pollution by trace elements of sediments that constitute an important reserve of pollutants in the environment.

The study was carried out in the area of three dam reservoirs: Blizne and Maziarnia (Voivodeship of Podkarpackie) and Nielisz (Voivodeship of Lublin). The main parameter differentiating the reservoirs was the water retention time and the manner of water discharge from the reservoirs. Three test sites were designated in the area of each reservoir: in the river zone of the reservoir, in the central part of the reservoir, and near the reservoir dam. At these sites, the concentrations of suspended sediment in the water and the content of organic matter in it, the concentrations of total phosphorus and total nitrogen, as well as chlorophyll a were monitored. In addition, two control sites were established: on the river upstream of the reservoir and on the river downstream of the dam, respectively. At these points, the concentrations of suspended sediments in the water and their organic matter content were recorded. The obtained results of the study and multivariate analysis of the data showed that morphometric parameters (including water retention time) of reservoirs and the method of water discharge influence water quality in downstream rivers. It was found that by using lower discharge and ensuring a sufficiently long retention time of water in the reservoir, it is possible to effectively limit the negative aspects of hydrotechnical structures’ impact on the natural environment. In practice, the observed relationships may constitute an important and missing link in the aspect of minimising undesirable side effects of this type of hydrotechnical objects.

The river Nile is a dominating physical feature of the north- eastern part of the African continent, covering areas exhibiting varieties and contrasts in topography, climate vegetation and people. So, in this study, we estimated the contamination of the Nile sediment with some major and trace heavy metals in core samples which can cause some undesirable health effects. Concentrations of all elements shows that the maximum enrichment is found in the top subsamples, while the most elements shows low contents in the lower layer reflecting the impact of human activity on the sediment contents. Different normalizing methods were used, i.e. geoaccumulation (Igeo) and enrichment factor (EF), for the influence of the natural variability in sediment mineralogy and to assess whether the concentrations observed in surface sediment represent background or contaminated levels. The study has also shown the importance of different sediment characteristics in spatial distribution of heavy metals in the sediments of river Nile. To protect the ecological system of river Nile watershed, industrial mining and agricultural activities along river stream should to be strictly regulated.

Opis:
Anthropogenic factors cause an increase in the impact on the natural system as a whole and its components. An increase in the intensity of this influence is predicted in the 21st century, and its forms are very diverse and unevenly distributed across the globe. This is most noticeable in industrialized countries, but at the same time this influence largely depends not only on the industrial potential and the level of technology, but also on the population density and urbanization of territories. Currently, much attention is being paid to the ecological problems of river catchments, which are significantly transformed as a result of technogenic influence on the natural environment. Surface runoff of water and sediments is usually formed in the river basin as slope runoff entering the river network. The river basin regulates the surface runoff formed as a result of atmospheric precipitation, which discretely falls on its surface, transferring a significant part of it into the underground runoff. The state of forest landscapes plays an important role in the formation of floods in the Dniester basin. The forest performs important ecological functions, including water protection and soil protection. Forests stabilize soils, preventing their erosion. The presence of a sufficient area of forests contributes to the regulation of surface runoff and the hydrological regime, the prevention of soil erosion and the stabilization of riverbeds. The use of water and mineral resources, construction on the banks of rivers and the laying of engineering communications through them are always different forms of artificial influence on the natural course of channel processes, which change it to varying degrees. Measures that change the channel-forming activity of the river, disrupt the flow of sediments, or radically change the hydraulic characteristics and structure of the flow have a particularly negative impact. The generalization of the dynamics of the channel process and ecological indicators within the territories of the Carpathian region will allow us to assess their impact on the state of the river network, the change in the quality of natural waters, and predict floods.

Water bodies are the final sinks of all pollution with more than 90% of contaminants found in suspended particulates and bottom sediments. Only less than 10% is retained in the water column yet it attracts and receives great research attention. The pollution status and the potential ecological risk of three pools of water along a stream due to heavy metal enrichment from a nearby active gold mining tailings dam were assessed. The upstreamdownstream and sedimentological approaches to ecosystem health assessment were used. Potential uses of pool water were also evaluated based on measured water quality parameters. Heavy metals in water and sediment were determined using Flame Atomic Absorption Spectrometry. Results revealed that salinisation, acidification and heavy metals were exported from a mining tailings dam to the stream. The degree of contamination of pool water by heavy metals dictated water uses. Heavy metal concentrations imposed water use restrictions for aquatic life in a pool which directly received discharge from the mine tailings dam. The average heavy metal concentrations in sediments were lower than the standard shale values. Sediment quality guidelines and pollution indices showed that the stream was not polluted with heavy metals, thus posed no potential ecological risk. Continuous monitoring of tailings discharge and wash off is important to safeguard aquatic ecosystem and public health.

Do oznaczenia fluoru zastosowano bezpośrednią metodę potencjometryczną z wykorzystaniem jonoselektywnej elektrody ISE. Do kalibracji wykorzystano wielomian 2 stopnia. Walidacji metody dokonano na podstawie następujących parametrów statystycznych: rzetelności, precyzji i powtarzalności. Na podstawie zebranych danych dokonano oceny trendów długo- i krótkoterminowych.
