Opis:
Pinus sylvestris L. seedlings grown for 12-17 months in pure culture after inoculation with S and P strains of Heterobasidion annosum (Fr.) Bref. were studied with the help of light and transmission electron microscopy. Standardized inoculation procedure and uniform in vitro conditions allowed evaluation of the host/pathogen interactions. Necrotic reaction of the bark cells associated with the accumulation of dark-stained material in vacuoles, and lignification of their walls in root regions in proximity to mycelium were the common host reaction. Hypertrophy of the bark cells in areas invaded by hyphae caused a tension that was responsible for strong deformation of the bark cells. Injury to the vascular cambium resulted in formation of barrier zone parenchyma and abnormal xylem elements. High amount of polyphenolic material accumulated in new formed parenchyma cells was an effective chemical “barrier” to the centripetal spread of hyphae. Resin-plugged tracheids and row parenchyma cells rich in polyphenolic material were common in wood areas colonized by the fungus.

Opis:
The current study aimed to evaluate the biodiversity and antagonistic potential of 22 endophytic fungal species belonging to 10 endophytic genera, namely Acremonium, Alternaria, Aspergillus, Fusarium, Gliocladium, Nigrospora, Penicillium, Pochonia, Scopulariopsis, and Stachybotrys, along with 2 morphospecies of mycelia, namely a yellow sterile septate mycelium (YSSM) and a dark sterile septate mycelium (DSSM), living within healthy Triticum aestivum L. against nine wheat pathogenic fungi identified as Alternaria alternata, Alternaria cichorii, Alternaria dianthi, Alternaria sonchi, Aspergillus petrakii, Curvularia penniseti, Fusarium oxysporum, Fusarium semitectum, and Fusarium solani obtained from naturally infected plants. The highest count and frequency in T. aestivum were recorded for Fusarium subglutinans (n = 81 and Rf = 34.91%) followed by DSSM (n = 32 and Rf = 13.79%). In vitro DSSM studies showed the highest antagonistic activity of 56.52% reduction against A. petrakii, while F. subglutinans inhibited F. semitectum by 72.97%. These two endophytic isolates were then selected as fungal bioagents to control root rot disease in wheat caused by A. petrakii and F. semitectum under greenhouse conditions. Wheat plants growing from seeds inoculated with DSSM were more resistant to root rot disease in soil infected with A. petrakii, and they showed reduced root rot severity percentage (15.56%) and disease index (0.27) compared to the values of 40% and 1.13, respectively, for these parameters in untreated plants. Furthermore, treatment of seeds with F. subglutinans before planting in soil infected with F. semitectum reduced the disease severity percentage and the disease index from 50% and 2.20 to 20% and 0.47, respectively. These endophytic fungi also markedly increased the growth parameters (length, fresh weight, and dry weight of shoots and roots) of wheat plants growing in soils infected with these phytopathogens. The present study showed that wheat is a promising ecological niche for different fungal endophytes that assist their host plants to survive and resist the harmful effects of phytopathogenic fungi, improve wheat growth, and develop fungal strains as biological control solutions against wheat diseases.

Opis:
Zucchini is a very valuable vegetable, easy to grow both in the field and under covers but it is often attacked by soil-borne fungi. The investigations were carried out in a farm near Lublin where three zucchini cultivars: Astra, Atena and Soraya, were grown in a tunnel and in the field in 2008-2009. Plants with stem and root rot were collected for laboratory tests. Mycological analysis showed that the predominant fungi were F. culmorum, F. equiseti and F. oxysporum. More Fusarium colonies were isolated from the roots of zucchini grown in the tunnel. In the pathogenicity test, all tested isolates of F. culmorum, F. equiseti and F. oxysporum proved to be pathogenic to zucchini seedlings, causing stunting, stem and root rot. The highest disease index was noticed in the combination with F. culmorum isolate fck61.

Opis:
Tolerance of several strains of the P-, S-, and F- intersterility groups of Heterobasidion annosum to low pH and high concentration of aluminium ions was studied on malt extract agar. There were marked intraspecific, but not intergroup, variations in tolerance to both factors. Some strains were relatively tolerant or sensitive to low pH and aluminium, while the others were tolerant to low pH but sensitive to Al. There was no relationship between tolerance of the strains to low pH and their tolerance to aluminium stress.

Opis:
Leaves, stem and pneumatophore of Avicennia marina and leaves and stem of Rhizophora mucronata were used as the organic amendments at 0.1, 1 and 5% concentrations in the control of root rot fungi like (Fusarium spp., Rhizoctonia solani and Macrophomina phasoelina) and root knot nematode Meloidogyne javanica on potato. In pot experiments, germination of seeds, shoot length, shoot weight, root length, root weight and number of knots were signifi cantly increased when plant parts like leaves, stem and pneumatophore of A. marina and R. mucronata were used at 1 and 5% concentrations. There was a complete suppression in infection of R. solani and M. phaseolina when A. marina and R. mucronata were used at 5% concentration on potato. Maximum inhibition of knots of M. javanica was observed when powder made from mangrove plant parts was used at 1 and 5% concentrations. Powder from all plant parts, like leaves, stem and pneumatophore, was effective in suppression of root infecting fungi and root knot nematode.
Liście, łodygi i pneumatofory Avicennia marina oraz liście i łodygi Rhizophora mucronata zastosowano jako organiczne dodatki do gleby w stężeniu 0,1, 1 i 5% do zwalczania grzybów powodujących zgniliznę korzeni, takich jak Fusarium spp., Rhizoctonia solani i Macrophomina phasoelina, oraz nicieni Meloidogyne javanica powodujących narośla na korzeniach ziemniaka. W doświadczeniach wazonowych kiełkowanie nasion, masa pędu, długość korzenia, masa korzenia znacznie zwiększyły się, a liczba narośli zmniejszyła się, kiedy części roślin A. marina i R. mucronata, takie jak liście, łodygi i pneumatofory, stosowano w stężeniu 1 i 5%. Nastąpiło zupełne zablokowanie zakażenia przez R. solani i M. phaseolina, kiedy części roślin A. marina i R. mucronata stosowano w stężeniu 5% w uprawach ziemniaka.
