Opis:
The aim of this study was to estimate differences in the time of flushing among 16 provenances of birch (Betula pendula Roth.) from Poland (12) and Lithuania (4). Using a six−stage scale budburst and leaf elongation were assessed during three springs (2001−2003). Analysis of variance showed significant differences between provenances both in sites and years. Provenances Augustów, Strzelce and Chełm flush early. Late flushers are birch from Golub and Głusko. Longitude had the most important influence on flushing; more eastern provenances tending to flush earlier. Heritability of budburst and leaf elongation varied from 0,53 to 0,97.

Opis:
The paper analyses the variability of selected adaptive, growth and morphological parameters of 16 Scots pine provenances from Poland. Their silvicultural value and usefulness under the growth conditions in Central Poland were assessed. The empirical part was carried out on the experimental plot established in spring 1966 in Lipce Reymontowskie Forest Range, Rogów Forest Experimental Station. In subsequent surveys, the following characteristics were determined for each tree: diameter at the breast height, height, height of crown base and diameter of branches. All trees were also classified into 4 quality classes related to the stem straightness. The following analyses were performed: survival rate, course of height growth and diameter increment over age, variation of volume at single trees and whole stands level, diameter of branches, stem straightness, selected genetics and silvicultural properties. The assessment of silvicultural values pointed out that the best provenances include Dłużek, Karsko, Bolewice and Rychtal. Local provenances from Rogów and Spała are classified as the weak ones. Therefore in local Scots pine stands there is a need to improve quality, stability and yield. Obtained results deepen an existing knowledge on variability of Scots pine stands and demonstrate possibilities for verification of seed regionalization principles in Poland.

Opis:
The paper reports on the results of the provenance experiment with Pinus sylvestris L. of the SP IUFRO 1982 series. The analysis comprised taxation parameters, specifically productivity. Polish populations appeared to be superior ones. Northern and southern provenances were found to represent an inferior quality of the analysed parameters. The dependence of traits on latitude of origin can be described by parabolic equations. Southern populations show poorer adaptation to the Supraśl environmental conditions than the northern ones.

Opis:
Provenance trials with forest trees provide valuable information about growth and adaptability of populations often transferred over large geographical and climatic distances. In this study we evaluated growth and survival of 19 Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) populations representing most of the natural range of the species in Europe, growing in a 30-year-old provenance trial in the northeastern Poland. We used cluster analysis to investigate differentiation among those populations in growth and survival. We also used published data on needle morphology and allozyme and DNA marker variation for those same populations to compare groupings of populations based on growth and needle traits and markers. We found significant variation among tested populations in all investigated traits – the largest variation was found for stand volume which integrates information on growth and survival. Variation in growth traits was related to the latitude of population origin with populations from the latitudinal band between 49° N and 54° N showing the best performance. Populations originating from both north and south off of that region showed lower productivity, which for southern provenances resulted from their particularly low survival, reflecting the lack of adaptation to the environment of the research site. Grouping of populations based on growth traits revealed three clusters corresponding to the three latitudinal regions – northern, central and southern. Needle morphological traits were not appropriate as markers of productivity. Clustering of populations based on needle morphology, and especially based on biochemical and molecular markers, did not correspond to the grouping based on growth traits.

The aim of the study was to estimate the ecotype diversity of Fagus sylvatica L. in the context of the genetic variation within the natural range of its distribution in Poland. The study covered 13 beech provenances from the selected seed stand. Additionally, 13 natural beech populations were subjected to analysis with special consideration taken of the diversity of this species in the forest complexes of the Bieszczady region. The high inter−population variation was proved by way of natural selection processes depending on site−climate conditions. The results point out to the need of selection of provenances to match the individual environmental conditions.

Opis:
Over 50 populations of Norway spruce from Bavaria were analysed at 23 isozyme gene loci. The mean genetic distances between these populations were quite small. A geographical grouping could not be observed, and discrimination between provenances from high and low altitudes was not identifiable using this marker type, either. The only difference between spruce populations from South Bavaria and those from Northeast Bavaria is in the presence of some distinct rare alleles. The highest values for the genetic diversity were detected for spruce stands in Northeast Bavaria (Frankonian Forest). Using STS markers, further genes of the nuclear genome of Picea abies can be dealt with. The genetic differences found on the basis of ten STS markers between different Picea abies seed lots and/or seedling populations are generally 2-3 times greater than those found by means of isozyme gene markers. DNA markers turned out to be an appropriate and substantial addition or even more a suitable alternative to isozyme markers for analysing genetic variation and testing provenance identity. Their advantages consist in a markedly wider variation as well as in the enlarged genome segments investigated.

Opis:
The studies were based on the material collected in the provenance experiment established in the territory of the Milicz Forest District where 78 pedunculate (Quercus robur L.) and sessile oak (Quercus petraea [Matt.] Liebl.) provenances from all over the country were planted in 5 replications. The izoenzyme analyses took in dormant buds from 300 trees of randomly selected 5 pedunculate oak and 5 sessile oak provenances. Variation of 6 enzymatic systems was the subject of the analysis. The studied oak populations exhibited a relatively high level of genetic variation, however, it was lower in comparison with the populations from other regions of Europe. Generally, the variation of the sessile oak was grater than of the pedunculate oak. The calculated genetic distance between the two oak species was 0.0284 and it exceeded genetic distances among the populations within the species.
