    Opis:
    The increase of the number of foreigners in prison population poses growing challenges in the everyday practice of penitentiary institutions. The paper focuses on the most important of all the rehabilitation methods – prison education. It discusses legal regulation and penal practice of educating prisoners. In the paper it is outlined what are the norms of national and international law that govern treatment of foreign prisoners. Polish penitentiary law has adopted a rule of non-discrimination of prisoners on the ground of their nationality. Therefore, there are no differences in regulation on prison education between nationals and foreigners. The rationale for this is controversial, concerning the fact that education of foreign prisoners is especially demanding and that they need to get special assistance in assimilating, communicating and learning the language. All foreign prisoners should be prepared for release in a such a way that facilitates their reintegration into society, whether they are to remain in Poland or are to be transferred or expelled.

    W dzisiejszych czasach bardzo łatwo wykluczyć kogoś nie tyle z własnego życia, ile z całego społeczeństwa, które zdaje się nie akceptować ludzi „zbędnych”. Takimi osobami są bez wątpienia więźniowie i osoby opuszczające zakłady karne. Autora artykułu nie interesowały badania empiryczne; miał raczej na celu zwrócenie uwagi na omawiany problem i ewentualne próby przeciwdziałania. Po omówieniu tematu wykluczenia społecznego i jego oddziaływania na omawiane grupy autor skoncentrował się na trudnościach i przeciwnościach, z którymi zmagają się oni w prawdziwym życiu. Wnioski, które podaje, świadczą o głębokim przemyśleniu podjętego tematu i dotyczą rodzajów wsparcia udzielanego osadzonym w zakładach karnych, pomocy instytucjonalnej (zarówno na etapie odbywania kary, jak również i później, po wyjściu na wolność), a także postulatów w zakresie zmian postpenitencjarnych. Konkluzją artykułu jest nawoływanie do reform, które po winny nastąpić nie tylko w strukturach państwa, ale przede wszystkim w sposobie myślenia współczesnych ludzi.
    Nowadays, it is very easy to exclude someone not only from our lives but also from the society. Prisoners and ex-prisoners are undoubtedly socially rejected people often treated like outcasts. The author of the article was not interested in an empirical research, but rather he aimed to point out the existing problem and eventual attempts to counteract it. After describing the issue of social exclusion and its effects on the post prison societies, the author focuses on difficulties and hardships they struggle with in the real life. The author provides us with an in-depth analysis of conclusions concerning different types of help and support for inmates, institutional support (not only for inmates in prison but also for released convicts) and lasting changes that need to be made. The conclusion of the paper is the call for reform that should take place not only in the structures of the state but first of all in the way of thinking of contemporary people.

    Osoby odbywające karę pozbawienia wolności są często postrzegane przez społeczeństwo jako osoby z różnego rodzaju zaburzeniami, prowadzącymi do obawy przed nimi. Skazani są postrzegani jako osoby nie akceptujące powszechnie uznawanych kategorii aksjologicznych i stanowiące zagrożenie dla ładu społecznego. Dlatego tak ważne jest, aby w trakcie odbywania kary pozbawienia wolności proces resocjalizacji przebiegał skutecznie i pozwolił im na powrót do normalnego życia po opuszczeniu więzienia. Celem niniejszego artykułu jest prezentacja wiedzy dotyczącej instytucji i form resocjalizacji penitencjarnej i postpenitencjarnej więźniów Aresztu Śledczego w Piotrkowie Trybunalskim. Pierwszorzędnymi materiałami źródłowymi, które posłużyły do przygotowania prezentowanego opracowania są dane otrzymane w wyniku wywiadów pogłębionych. W opracowaniu przyjęta została perspektywa psychospołeczna.
    Persons serving imprisonment penalties are often perceived by the society as having various disorders, which can lead to fear of such people. The convicts are seen as persons who do not accept the generally accepted axiological categories and as a threat to the social order. Therefore, it is so important that, during the time of imprisonment, the process of rehabilitation becomes efficient to allow inmates to return to the normal life on leaving prison. The purpose of the following article is to present the findings concerning the prisoners of the Detention Ward in Piotrków Trybunalski and forms of their penitential rehabilitation. The primary source of information that enabled the preparation of the paper are the data obtained from in-depth interviews with prisoners. The paper discusses the issue from a psychosocial perspective.

    Total institutions create and use for their operation a range of natural and artificial barriers. A place where the number of barriers is relatively the greatest is penitentiary institutions that are located on islands. In addition to the artificial barriers created by man, natural barriers (water and adverse climate) in such institutions play the same role in isolation from the world. Employment of that form of penitentiary isolation is usually a revenge taken by society (authority) against the persons being convicted for the most serious crimes in a given legal system.

    The paper discusses the problem of post-penitentiary assistance as a form of support to prisoners whoundergo a process of preparation to live at large and need help in their local communities.A major aim of post-penitentiary assistance is not only to prevent social exclusion of prisoners and theirfamilies but also their relapse into crime.Various assistance activities are undertaken to achieve this aim including those organised by post-penitentiaryand local council institutions and district offices, welfare centres, culture and educational establishments andnon-goverment organisations which function at the municipal level .These activities could be observed in particular Polish towns during the partition of Poland when schools andlocal associations undertook initiatives regarding assistance to prisoners .It is worth noting that in 1918-1939, various forms of support activities were organised by associations suchas the ones mentioned above, including ”Patronat” and municipalities, welfare centres, museums, schoolsand local parishes.Nowadays, local policy plays an important role in post-penitentiary assistance, particularly when a sentenceis served. Remand centres, correction institutions cooperate under various projects with local councils andnon-government institutions to prepare convicts to live at large.

    Pomoc postpenitencjarna jest istotnym elementem profilaktyki społecznej. Polega na wsparciu udzielanym przez państwo i społeczeństwo osobom zwalnianym z zakładów karnych i innych jednostek penitencjarnych, a jej celem jest pomoc materialna, psychologiczna, prawna, medyczna lub inna, w zależności od indywidualnych potrzeb i sytuacji życiowej takiej osoby. Funkcjonujące w społeczeństwie instytucje, powołane do realizacji tych celów, podejmują szereg działań na rzecz zwalnianych i  ich rodzin. Udzielanie świadczeń z  zakresu pomocy postpenitencjarnej zapoczątkowane zostaje jeszcze w  warunkach izolacji więziennej i  jest kontynuowane po zwolnieniu. W  realizację jej zadań zaangażowani są kuratorzy sądowi, urzędy pracy, ośrodki pomocy społecznej i inne jednostki samorządowe, instytucje i organizacje pozarządowe, jak również inne podmioty.
    The post-penitentiary assistance is an essential element of social prevention. It relies on support given by the state and society to people released from prisons and other penitentiary institutions, and its purpose is to help the material, psychological, legal, medical or other matters, depending on individual needs and circumstances of that person.
