Opis:
The stability of levee depends mainly on mechanical and hydromechanical properties of material used for its construction. The structural capacity of a system beyond the expected loads or actual loads is calculated to a variety of different underground structures such as slopes, retaining walls or tunnels. The stability of structure is often expressed by Factor of Stability (FoS) obtained by numerical modeling. In case of the stability analysis of the levee, the flooding process is limited to few scenarios of flooding waves. The first approach of determination of the most significant stages of flooding wave shape can be found in Dwornik et al. (2015). In this paper, the stability of earthen levee for different stages and flooding waves was calculated. Stability of the levee was described using Factor of Safety implemented in Itasca Flac 2D 7.0 software using the strength reduction procedure (Itasca 2011). It is applied by a strength reduction method, which reduces the shear strength of the material to bring the slope to a state of limiting equilibrium. The value of FoS bigger than 1.0 indicate the stable construction, whereas the value less than 1.0 should be interpreted as a possible unstable model (Itasca 2011). Numerical modeling presented in this paper was performed for 17 different schemes of flooding wave. All the schemas were slight modification of the flooding wave considered during the ISMOP project (www.ismop.pl, Mościcki et al. 2014). The analysis was conducted to the flooding wave described by the four stages: water level increasing, durability of the height water level, the pace of water level decreasing and durability of the stage between cycles of successive flooding waves. The increasing of the water level assumed in the numerical modeling varied from 0.1 m to 3.5 m in height. The high water level, assumed as a 3.5 m, was different for the individual scenario. The decreasing water level varied from 3.5 m to 0.1 m preceding the low water level assumed 0.1 m in height. Calculations show that levee is stable for all tested construction stages. The lowest FoS value was obtained after decreasing water level in the reservoir between levees. The slowest pace of decreasing water level was assumed, the higher value of FoS was obtain, which indicated better levee stability. Opis:
This paper presents the results of a structure study of a dispersion composite on a silicone matrix with a filler in the form of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). The study aims to determine the effect of the filler on the composite mechanical properties and electrical conductivity. Materials that are electrically conductive and exhibit high mechanical properties can find applications in high-strain sensors. During the study, the characteristic properties of the susceptible materials, silicone alone and silicone with different filler contents (4%, 6%, and 8% by weight), were determined after curing. Microscopic observations were performed to assess the influence of carbon fillers on the material structure and to determine the level of homogeneity of the material. Examination of mechanical properties facilitated the determination of the Shor A hardness (ShA), stiffness, and Poisson’s ratio of the cured composites, depending on the nanotubes’ content. In parallel with the study of mechanical properties, the effect of loading, and the associated deformation of the samples, on the conductivity of the composite was investigated. Based on the results obtained, a discussion was carried out on the type of conductivity characteristic of silicone with different filler content as well as depending on the level of deformation of the samples.

Opis:
ARMOX steel is an armoured steel with excellent mechanical properties as well as dense hardness, tensile strength and a high level of toughness. These properties result from specific production processes finished with rolling quenching and tempering. The producer of ARMOX steel recommends their secondary processing (cutting, welding, shaping) at temperatures lower than 200°C due to over tempering and the degradation of mechanical properties in heat affected areas. This paper describes the mechanisms and reasons for this degradation including the simulation of the cooling processes concerning ARMOX 500 steel.

In this comparative study, the influence of the organophilisation process on the properties of resulting organobentonite fillers and their capability to improve the mechanical properties of clay/polymer nanocomposites were investigated. The organobentonites were obtained by activation with the use of two organic quaternary ammonium salts (QAS) with alkyl chains of significantly different lengths. The organophilisation resulted in an increase in the interlayer space of clays, which was confirmed by XRD analysis. The obtained organofillers were used to produce nanoclay/epoxy resin composites and the effects of alkyl chain length on the resulting properties of composites were compared based on the examination of mechanical behaviour and morphology, and a composite filled with the non organophilised bentonite was used as a reference material. It was demonstrated that the organophilisation process using distearyldimethyl ammonium chloride salt with a longer alkyl chain (C18-C20) created a more superior conditions for the compatibility of nanofiller with a polymer matrix, resulting in a 25 % increase in the bending strength of the epoxy composite material filled with 3 %wt of the organophilised bentonite, comparing to neat epoxy.

Opis:
The effect of chemical composition of the sintering atmosphere on the microstructure and mechanical properties of PM structural low-carbon steels is presented. The base powders were Astaloy CrL, Astaloy CrM, low carbon ferromanganese and graphite C-UF. From the base powders two mixtures with compositions of Fe-3%Mn-(1.5/3%)Cr-(0.2/0.5)%Mo-0.2%C were prepared. Following pressing in a steel rigid die, compacts were sintered at 1250°C for 60 min in a semi-closed container. 5%H2-95%N2 mixture and air were the sintering atmospheres. For sintering in air, lumps of ferromanganese were placed with the compacts in the container. After sintering, half of the samples were tempered at 200°C for 60 minutes in air. Mechanical tests (tensile, bend, toughness, hardness) and microstructural investigations were performed. The microstructures of the steels were inhomogeneous, mainly ferritic-bainic. Tempering of steel based on Astaloy CrM sintered in an atmosphere of 5% H2-95% N2 slightly reduced tensile strength and toughness: from 748 to 734 MPa and from 7.15 to 6.83 J/cm2, respectively. Chemical composition had a greater effect; steels based on Astaloy CrL and Astaloy CrM had tensile strengths 526-665 and 672-748 MPa, hardness 280-325 and 388-421 HV, respectively. The best properties were obtained after sintering in air of Fe-3%Mn-3%Cr-0.5%Mo-0.2%C without heat treatment: tensile strength 672 MPa, toughness 6.93 J/cm2, hardness 421.1 HV, 0.2 % offset yield strength 395 MPa.

The paper analyzes the influence of different heat treatment processes on the mechanical properties of low-alloy high-strength steel denoted by Polish Standard (PN) as 10MnVNb6. One of the findings is that, after aging, the mechanical properties of rolled steel are high: the yield strength may reach > 600 MPa, and the ultimate tensile strength is > 700 MPa. These properties are largely dependent on the grain size and dispersion of the strengthening phase in the ferrite matrix. Aging applied after hot rolling contributes to a considerable rise in the yield strength and ultimate tensile strength. The process of normalization causes a decrease in the average grain size and coalescence (reduction of dispersion) of the strengthening phase. When 10MnVNb6 steel was aged after normalization, there was not a complete recovery in its strength properties.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of agglomerated TATB on the mechanical and sensitivity properties of cast polymer-bonded explosives (PBXs). By introducing agglomerated TATB, cast PBXs with a high solids content can be obtained. The mechanical properties of TATB-based cast PBXs were evaluated by tensile and compression tests. The experimental results showed that the addition of the agglomerated TATB clearly enhanced the ductility and fracture toughness, but decreased the strength of the PBXs. However, the strength increased with the decreasing particle size of the agglomerated TATB. When TATB-crystal was replaced by agglomerated TATB in the cast PBXs, a significant drop in the initial modulus and stress were observed. Samples with a higher content of agglomerated TATB were less sensitive to impact stimuli. The desired mechanical and sensitivity characteristics may be achieved for TATB-based cast PBXs by introducing agglomerated TATB.

Opis:
Influence of starch content on selected properties of hardboard. The aim of the research was to examine the possibility of producing wet-formed fiberboard using a different content of potato starch. The scope of works included the production of plates in laboratory conditions with 0, 1, 5, 10 and 20% mass content of potato starch and subjecting them to selected physical and mechanical tests. Thanks to the research, it was possible to produce a hard fiberboard hardboard using a mass fraction of starch. The results of the tests confirmed that as the starch content in the panel increases, the value of mechanical properties increases also.
Wpływ udziału skrobi na wybrane właściwości płyt pilśniowych mokroformowanych. Celem badań było określenie możliwości produkcji płyt pilśniowych twardych (mokroformowanych) z wykorzystaniem różnego udziału skrobi ziemniaczanej, jako środka wzmacniającego. Zakres prac obejmował wytworzenie płyt w warunkach laboratoryjnych przy: 0, 1, 5, 10, 20% udziale masowym skrobi ziemniaczanej oraz poddanie ich wybranym próbom fizycznym i mechanicznym. Potwierdzono możliwość wytwarzania płyt pilśniowych twardych z wykorzystaniem skrobi.

Wood plastic composites as a substitution for HDF. As part of the research, industrial HDF boards were used and WPC composites were produced, differentiated in terms of matrix (PLA and HDPE) and filler content (40%, 50% and 60%). The density and density profile was measured to compare HDF and WPC structure. In addition, the manufactured boards were tested for strength (MOR, MOE), screw holding, thickness swelling and water absorption after immersion in water for 2 and 24 hours. WPC were characterized by a higher density than HDF boards and a uniform density profile. In addition, WPC composites were characterized by lower MOR and MOE values than HDF boards. Compared to HDF boards, WPC composites were characterized by higher values of screw holding and better resistance to moisture.
Kompozyty WPC jako substytut płyt HDF. W ramach badań wykorzystano przemysłowe płyty HDF oraz wytworzono kompozyty WPC zróżnicowane pod kątem matrycy (PLA i HDPE) oraz udziału napełniacza (40%, 50% i 60%). Oznaczono gęstość i profil gęstości w celu porównania struktury HDF i WPC. Ponadto wytworzone płyty zostały przetestowane pod kątem wytrzymałości (MOR, MOE), utrzymania wkrętów, spęcznienia na grubość oraz nasiąkliwości po moczeniu w wodzie przez 2 i 24 godziny. WPC charakteryzowały się wyższa gęstością niż płyty HDF oraz jednorodnym profilem gęstości. Ponadto kompozyty WPC charakteryzowały się niższymi wartościami MOR i MOE niż płyty HDF. W porównaniu do płyt HDF kompozyty WPC charakteryzowały się wyższymi wartościami zdolności utrzymania wkrętów oraz lepszą odpornością na działanie wilgoci.

Opis:
Phase compositions of composite materials determine their performance as well as physical and mechanical properties. Depending on the type of applied matrix and the kind, amount and morphology of the matrix reinforcement, it is possible to shape the material properties so that they meet specific operational requirements. In the paper, results of investigations on silver alloy matrix composites reinforced with ceramic particles are presented. The investigations enabled evaluation of hardness, tribological and mechanical properties as well as the structure of produced materials. The matrix of composite material was an alloy of silver and aluminium, magnesium and silicon. As the reinforcing phase, 20-60 μm ceramic particles (SiC, SiO2, Al2O3 and Cs) were applied. The volume fraction of the reinforcing phase in the composites was 10%. The composites were produced using the liquid phase (casting) technology, followed by plastic work (the KOBO method). The mechanical and tribological properties were analysed for plastic work-subjected composites. The mechanical properties were assessed based on a static tensile and hardness tests. The tribological properties were investigated under dry sliding conditions. The analysis of results led to determination of effects of the composite production technology on their performance. Moreover, a relationship between the type of reinforcing phase and the mechanical and tribological properties was established.

Opis:
Titanium compounds in view of their physicochemical properties constitute interesting materials applied in chemical synthesis. They are used for preparation of antifungal agents as well as for production of self-cleaning coatings. Moreover, mentioned inorganic compounds are characterized by a capability of neutralizing of unpleasant odor. Those all characteristics make these substances useful in many fields. In the framework of presented research series of polymer materials modified with titanium and titanium oxide have been obtained by means of photopolymerization. In the further step, studies on such synthesized materials have been conducted with particular emphasis on determining a mechanical properties and wettability. Hardness of prepared polymers have been tested by means of Shore durometer. Based on the research it can be concluded that addition of titanium compounds to the polymer matrix resulted in the improvement of mechanical properties as well as in an increase of hydrophobicity. It is worth mentioning that it is possible to manipulate properties of the obtained compositions by the introduction of an appropriate amount of additive into their matrices.

This paper presents the results of mechanical tests carried out on two different commercially available cobalt alloys applied in dental prosthetics for the production of frame dentures. The test samples were obtained by the method of investment casting using as a charge pure primary materials and pure primary materials mixed with various additions of process scrap (25, 50, and 75%). The tests showed that the alloys could not reach the mechanical properties reported by the manufacturer in either case. In the case of the alloy without the addition of tantalum, the general conclusion was that both the plastic and strength properties decreased with increasing amounts of the introduced process scrap. The mechanical properties (mainly elongation) of the alloy containing Ta reached the highest values in the samples containing 75% of the process scrap. Examinations of fractures carried out by SEM have revealed their varied character – ductile or transcrystalline. All of the samples tested showed the presence of dendrites and solidification areas, with shrinkage porosity occurring in the internal sample zones.

Instrumental methods of measuring the mechanical properties of bread can be used to determine changes in the properties of it during storage, as well as to determine the effect of various additives on the bread texture. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of the mixture of plant components on the physical properties of wheat bread. In particular, the mechanical properties of the crumb and crust were studied. A sensory evaluation of the end product was also performed. The mixture of plant components included: carob fiber, milled grain red quinoa and black oat (1:2:2) – added at 0, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 % – into wheat flour. The results showed that the increase of the addition of the proposed additive significantly increased the water absorption of flour mixtures. Moreover, the use of the mixture of plant components above 5% resulted in the increase of bread volume and decrease of crumb density. Furthermore, the addition of the mixture of plant components significantly affected the mechanical properties of bread crumb. The hardness of crumb also decreased as a result of the mixture of plant components addition. The highest cohesiveness was obtained for bread with 10% of additive and the lowest for bread with 25% of mixture of plant components. Most importantly, the enrichment of wheat flour with the mixture of plant components significantly reduced the crust failure force and crust failure work. The results of sensory evaluation showed that the addition of the mixture of plant components of up to 10% had little effect on bread quality.

The aim of presented study was to investigate the effect of using long rotation maize stalk fibers as filler on the mechanical and thermomechanical properties of an injection molded biocomposite with a polylactide matrix using different fiber percentages. To evaluate the effect of maize stalk particle reinforcement on the PLA matrix, the mechanical properties of the biocomposites including tensile strength, tensile modulus, relative strain at maximum stress, strain at break, stress at break and Charpy unnotched impact strength were determined. From a mechanical point of view, the best fiber content was at 15% as it caused the least reduction in strain at break, stress at break, and strain at maximum stress relative to the polylactide matrix.

The article presents the research results on the mechanical properties of aluminum alloy 7020 and its MIG welded joints. For comparison alloy 5083 - the most currently used in shipbuilding alloy was chosen as well as 5059 -the new high-strength alloy. Besides the native material alloys there were investigated their joints welded by MIG -the same method as alloy 7020. Welding parameters used for the connection of the sheets made of 7020, 5083 and 5059 alloys were presented. Metallographic analysis showed the correct construction of structural bonded joints. The arc welding method - MIG is the most common method of joining aluminum alloys used in shipbuilding. It replaces the TIG method of providing equally high quality of joints with a much higher performance. The research was carried out using a static tensile test in accordance with the requirements of the Polish Standard PN-EN 10002:2004. Flat samples cut perpendicular to the direction of rolling were used. The research was conducted at the temperature of + 20 centigrade. The 7020 alloy has higher strength properties then alloys: 5083 and 5059. The yield stress is higher by 14.8% compared to 5083 alloy, and by 11.7% compared to the alloy 5059. Plastic properties of an alloy 7020 are the lowest, but with reserves meet the requirements of classification societies. The joints welded by MIG of 7020 alloy have higher strength properties then joints of alloys: 5083 and 5059. Plastic properties of alloy 7020 compared to 5083 alloy are smaller and at the same level as the connector alloy 5059.

The paper presents the results of research on the microstructure and mechanical properties of 12HMF steel after longterm service. The investigated material was taken from a pipeline with circumferential welded joint after 419 988 hours of service at the temperature of 490°C, steam pressure 8 MPa. Performed research has shown that the 12HMF steel after service was characterized by a typical microstructure for this grade of steel, that is a ferritic-bainitic microstructure without any visible advanced processes of its degradation. The investigation of mechanical properties has shown that the examined steel after service was characterized by a very low impact energy KV, and yield strength lower than the required minimum. Whilst tensile strength and yield strength determined at elevated temperature was higher and similar to the standard requirements, respectively. It has been proved that the main cause of an increase in brittleness and a decrease in yield strength of the examined steel should be seen in the segregation of phosphorus to grain boundaries and the formation of precipitate free zones near the boundaries.

In this study, the mechanical properties of Al-Si alloys was improved by selecting higher Si content and avoiding distortion in Al-Si matrix by adding an extrusion process such that the fabrication processes casting and extrusion were in sequence. Cast billets were extruded at ratios 4:1 and 10:1 to obtained two extruded bars with different processing parameters. The as-extruded samples were characterized and investigated for microstructure and mechanical properties. Optical Microscope was used to examined phase morphologies and microstructures of the extruded Al-Si bars. Mechanical properties were conducted on each sample to study the effectiveness of the additional extrusion process in high Si content Al-Si alloys. The result shows that by increasing the extrusion ratio, the size of the primary Si particle reduces leading to a higher density, better tensile and yield strength compared to the cast billet.

Electrochemical Cr coatings doped with diamond nanoparticles were deposited on sintered steels with different carbon contents (0.2-0.8 wt.-%). The mechanical properties of surfaces as hardness and wear resistance increase as compared to the steel substrate. Microcutting and microgridding mechanisms were observed after tribological tests, but also adhesive wear in some areas was observed. X-ray examination indicated that the layer was textured, with the exception of the sample with the highest concentration of diamond nanoparticles in the electrolyte (42 g/l). The intensity ratio ICr110/ICr200 was calculated and compared with the indices for a standard sample. The greatest differences in the intensity ratio occurred for the samples with low carbon content (0.2% C). On the other hand, more the material is textured the greater the difference.

This paper deals with the preparation and characterization of epoxy tamarind fruit (Tf) and Sansevieria cylindrica (Sc) hybrid composites containing fiber 0:20, 5:15, 10:10, 15:5 and 20:0 of (Tf:Sc) combinations loading. Sansevieria cylindrica leaves were used in this paper for extracting fiber out of it and in the similar manner ripen Tamarind fruit was used to extract fiber. Two different fibers viz. tamarind fruit/ Sansevieria cylindrica fibers were loaded into the epoxy system to develop the hybrid composites. The tensile and flexural properties of the resulting 20 wt. % loading of Tf/Sc/epoxy hybrid composites were examined. The resulting hybrid composites of 20 wt. % Tf/Sc with varying combinations exhibit the optimum improvement of mechanical properties and dielectric strength. 2 °C rise in decomposition temperature and 5 °C rise glass transition temperature were observed from the TGA and DSC thermal analysis. The fractured cross sections of flexural samples were assessed their performance as a function of fiber loading of Tf/Sc/epoxy hybrid composites by SEM analysis.

Epoxy (LY-556/HY-951) system filled with modified clay (MC) was synthesized by using mechanical shear mixing with the addition of hardener as tri-ethylene-tetra-amine (TETA). The effect of the fumed silica can be negated by the application of a shear force (e.g. mixing, brushing, spraying etc), allowing the liquid to flow, level out and permit the escape of entrapped air. The reinforcement effects of MC in the epoxy polymer on thermal, mechanical and vibration properties were studied. Curing study shows that the addition MC does not show any effect in the curing behavior of epoxy polymer. Thermogravimetry analysis (TGA) shows enhanced thermal stability for epoxy with MC fillers. The epoxy with MC fillers shows considerable improvement on tensile and impact properties over pure epoxy polymer. SEM studies shows that addition of clay significantly turns the epoxy system from brittle to ductile nature was played instrumental in scaling performance. The improvement in tensile and impact properties of nanocomposites is supported with the fracture surface studies. Epoxy with MC fillers shows enhanced vibration characteristics than that of the pure epoxy polymer. FTIR studies indicated the formation of C-H bonds on the surface of the nanocomposites.

Opis:
Chromium- and nickel based alloys offer good mechanical properties, while keeping them also in highly corrosive environment. In addition, the introduction of the nitrogen at the level of 0.3 to 0.5% to the alloy structure, increases the plastic deformation ability of the cast alloy. This observation is fully confirmed by the results of the plastic deformation tests (performed on Gleeble), which are presented in this paper. The laboratory samples made of NiCrN wrought alloy and processed by die forging, demonstrated the significant increase of the yield stress and plastic deformation ability for the applied deformation degrees. The experiments showed about twofold increase of the resistance to cyclic loading for the forged products, when comparing it to the initial alloy state after casting. The developed technology (validated by numerical simulations) has been used to manufacture the workpiece for the propeller shaft. The results of the deformation performance for the element subjected to plastic processing have been compared with the material in its cast state.

Opis:
A basic set of experiments for the determination of mechanical properties of sands is described. This includes the determination of basic physical and mechanical properties, as conventionally applied in soil mechanics, as well as some additional experiments, which provide further information on mechanical properties of granular soils. These additional experiments allow for determination of steady state and instability lines, stress-strain relations for isotropic loading and pure shearing, and simple cyclic shearing tests. Unconventional oedometric experiments are also presented. Necessary laboratory equipment is described, which includes a triaxial apparatus equipped with local strain gauges, an oedometer capable of measuring lateral stresses and a simple cyclic shearing apparatus. The above experiments provide additional information on soil’s properties, which is useful in studying the following phenomena: pre-failure deformations of sand including cyclic loading compaction, pore-pressure generation and liquefaction, both static and caused by cyclic loadings, the effect of sand initial anisotropy and various instabilities. An important feature of the experiments described is that they make it possible to determine the initial state of sand, defined as either contractive or dilative. Experimental results for the “Gdynia” model sand are shown.

A Kelvin-Voigt model consisting of a spring and a dashpot in parallel was applied for the viscoelastic characterization of solid rocket propellants. Suitable values of spring constants and damping coefficients were employed by a least squares fit of the errors to generate creep curves using a Dynamic Mechanical Analyzer (DMA) for composite solid propellants. Three different composite propellant formulations based on HTPB/AP/Al having burning rates of 5 mm/s, 15 mm/s and 20 mm/s were tested under different stress levels varying from 0.1 MPa to 3 MPa and at different temperatures varying from 35 °C to 85 °C. Creep behavior with recovery was studied and analyzed to evaluate the viscoelastic properties. The change in spring constants, representing elastic deformation, was very small compared to the damping coefficients for the propellants studied. For a typical propellant formulation, when the stress level was increased, the spring and damping coefficient both increased significantly whereas for an increase in temperature, they remained nearly constant. However, the ratio E/η was observed to be constant and independent of stress level. It was also observed that the variation of E and η varied linearly with increase in stress whereas their ratio showed a logarithmic variation. A mathematical correlation was developed to evaluate the viscoelastic properties during creep of composite propellants.

The paper presents the results of the impact of kohlrabi parenchyma sampling site on textural properties. Selected texture parameters, i.e. hardness, springinees, cohesiveness and chewiness were determined by the double compression test TPA. The study was conducted on samples taken from well-defined kohlrabi layers (upper layer, middle layer, lower layer) and zones (A, B, C), because the vegetable's structure is heterogeneous. The samples were compressedat the longitudinal and transverse orientation of the fibers relative to the movement of the working tool. The results were statistically analyzed using the program Statistica 8.0. The research has shown that the place of sampling and orientation of the fibers have a significant impact on the value of all the kohlrabi texture parameters.

In the present research presents influence of coupling agent 1 % triethoxymethyl silane sprayed on to the wollastonite particulate powder before it dispersed into the vinylester/composites. Firstly two different composites were developed in which wollastonite is filled with vinylester resin and same wollastonite was sprayed with coupling agent 1 % triethoxymethyl silane then filled with vinylester resin. The particle functionalization with a bi-functional coupling agent 1 % triethoxymethyl silane was observed to have a significant effect on the curing process and subsequent physical properties of the composites. Wollastonite functionalization favors the composite fabrication with a lower curing temperature as compared to the as-received particle filled vinyl ester resin composites. Thermogravimetric analysis showed an increased thermo-stability in the particles functionalized filled vinyl ester resin composites as compared to the unmodified particle filled counterparts. The uniform particle dispersion and the chemical bonding between filler and vinyl ester resin matrix were found to contribute to the increased thermal stability and enhanced tensile strength and modulus.

An investigation was carried out to examine the effect of austempering on the microstructure and mechanical properties of nodular cast iron GGG 50 (DIN EN 1563) alloyed with different amount of copper. Optical, scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy analyses were performed for microstructural characterization. In addition, hardness and tensile tests were carried out for mechanical properties determination. Specimens were austenitized at 900°C for an hour, then austempered for an hour at 330°C in salt bath and cooled at a room temperature in air. The results indicated that the addition of Cu to GGG 50 encouraged pearlite formation in the matrix structure. In addition, with the austempering heat treatment, the structure was transformed from ferrite + pearlite into ausferrite and retain austenite. Furthermore, for the alloy with 2 wt% Cu addition, it was noted that the graphite nodules diverged from sphericity and Cu was concentrated around the graphite. After austempering, mechanical properties were significantly improved and the highest mechanical properties were found at 1.5 wt% Cu.

Flax fiber reinforced epoxy composites were subjected to water immersion tests in order to study the effects of water absorption on the mechanical properties. Epoxy composites specimens containing 0, 1, 5 and 10% fiber weight were prepared. Water absorption tests were conducted by immersing specimens in a deionized water bath at 25 °C and 90 °C for different time durations. The tensile and flexural properties of water immersed specimens subjected to both aging conditions were evaluated and compared alongside dry composite specimens. The percentage of moisture uptake increased as the fiber volume fraction increased due to the high cellulose content. The tensile and flexural properties of reinforced epoxy specimens were found to decrease with increase in percentage moisture uptake. Moisture induced degradation of composite samples was significant at elevated temperature.

The paper investigates the compression strength of samples of regenerative polymer mass RM 101 Resimetal Metal Repair Pasta manufactured by Rendor. The effect of weather conditions on selected mechanical properties of the tested mass is examined. The samples are subjected to seasoning at room temperature, in an environmental chamber, and in a thermal shock chamber. The samples for strength testing are made according to the adopted method. It has been observed that the samples seasoned at room temperature have the lowest strength, while the highest strength is exhibited by the samples subjected to seasoning in an environmental chamber at a temperature of 70°C and humidity of 95%. In addition, the paper compares the strength properties of regenerative polymer masses manufactured by Chester Molecular, Belzona, and Unirep, as well as of the widely used epoxy compound Epidian 57 mixed with the Z-1 curing agent with those of the Rendor mass. The properties of the above masses are obtained from the available literature.

Finished plywood was tested for abrasion resistance, MOR, MOE and density. It was concluded that higher grammage of phenol film increases wear resistance and final density of plywood. Plywood coated with two-layer phenol film with grammage of 80/220 g/m2 had 4 times higher rate of abrasion resistance in comparison with plywood coated with phenol film with surface density of 40/120 g/m2. Coating plywood surface with phenol films generally decreases MOR values, in comparison with uncoated plywood. In terms of MOE, there were no evidence of conclusive relation, despite statistically significant differences between each variant.
Wpływ gramatury filmów fenolowych na wybrane właściwości mechaniczne sklejki. W ramach badań przemysłowe sklejki brzozowe o grubości 15 mm wykończono w warunkach przemysłowych 5 wariantami filmów fenolowych, zróżnicowanych pod względem gramatury (40/120 g/m2, 60/145 g/m2, 60/167 g/m2, 80/220 g/m2, 2 × 80/220 g/m2). Wykończone sklejki poddano badaniom odporności na ścieranie, MOR, MOE i gęstości. Wykazano, że wzrost gramatury filmu fenolowego wpływa na wzrost odporności na ścieranie oraz gęstość sklejek. Sklejki uszlachetnione podwójną warstwą filmu fenolowego o gramaturze 80/220 g/m2 wykazują 4 krotnie wyższą odporność ścieranie w porównaniu do sklejki uszlachetnionych filmem fenolowym o gramaturze 40/120 g/m2. Pokrycie powierzchni sklejek filmem fenolowym wpływa na ogół na spadek wartości MOR w stosunku do sklejek niewykończonych. W przypadku MOE, pomimo statystycznie istotnych różnic pomiędzy wariantami, nie odnotowano jednoznacznych zależności.

The appropriate development and customisation of the stent to the urethral tissues requires the determination of many factors such as strength and degradation. Given the distinctive conditions of urethral tissues, it is important that the design of the stent be properly developed. The selection of a stent material requires knowing its material characteristics and verifying that they are suitable for the future implantation site. In the present study, the development of a polydioxanone (PDO)-based stent was undertaken. The PDO material was fabricated using an additive technique – 3D printing. Then, in vitro tests were performed to determine the degradation time of the material under conditions simulating an aggressive urinary environment. The changes in the parameters of mechanical properties before and after the degradation period were determined, and the changes in the structure of the material before and after degradation were observed. Numerical analysis was performed for the proposed stent design. The results showed that PDO has good mechanical properties, but its degradation time is too short to be used in a urethral stent. Among the innovations of the studies conducted are bending strength tests, which is not a frequently considered aspect so far.

Lignin was used to study the mechanical properties and thermal stability of polymers. The lignin was blended with three kinds of polymers, and the addition of lignin was 0.5 wt%. Under the condition of thermal oxidation, the thermal stability of lignin/polymer samples varies with the structure of lignin. The effects of lignin on the mechanical properties and thermal stability of the polymers were investigated by oxidation induction time (OIT), rheological properties, mechanical properties and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The results show that the effect of lignin on the thermal properties of polymer samples is 2~3oC. It can be inferred that lignin can effectively improve the interaction between polymer molecular chain segments, and improve the crystallization rate and rigidity to a certain extent, so it can be seen that lignin has good compatibility and thermal stability.

Lately we encounter still more new applications of metallic foams, as well as possible methods of their manufacture. These metallic materials have specific properties, such as large rigidity at low density, in some cases high thermal conductivity, capability to absorb energy, etc. The work is focused on the preparation of these materials using conventional casting technology, which ensures rapid and economically feasible method for production of shaped components. In the experimental part we studied conditions of casting of metallic foams with a regular structure made of ferrous and non-ferrous alloys. For thus obtained castings we evaluated the achieved microstructure and mechanical properties, which determine the possible use of these materials. The samples were subjected to compression tests, by which we investigated deformation behaviour of selected materials and determined the value of energy absorption.

Nanostructured and composite WC-12Co coatings were prepared by means of the supersonic spray process (HVOF). The microstructure and composition of WC-12Co nanostructured powder were analyzed by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM). Investigations revealed nano grains of WC with the size in the range of 50-500 nm. The nanostructured sprayed coating was analysed by SEM and phase composition was investigated by X-ray diffractometer (XRD). A denser coating structure with higher hardness was observed compared to conventional coating with a small amount of W2C, WC1−x, W and some amorphous phase. Young’s modulus and hardness were determined by depth sensing indentation in HVOF sprayed WC-12Co nanostructured coatings. Results were compared to conventional coatings and the relevance of the nanostructure was analyzed. An indentation size effect was observed on the polished surface and cross-section of both coatings. Data provided by indentation tests at maximum load allow to estimate hardness and elastic modulus. Enhanced nanomechanical properties of conventional coating in comparison to nanostructured one were observed. Nanostructured coatings WC-12Co (N) revealed significantly better corrosion resistance.

Inconel 718 is a precipitation hardenable nickel-iron based superalloy. It has exceptionally high strength and ductility compared to other metallic materials. This is due to intense precipitation of the γ’ and γ” strengthening phases in the temperature range 650-850°C. The main purpose of the authors was to analyze the aging process in Inconel 718 obtained in accordance with AMS 5596, and its effect on the mechanical properties. Tensile and hardness tests were used to evaluate the mechanical properties, in the initial aging process and after reheating, as a function of temperature and time respectively in the ranges 650°-900°C and 5-480 min. In addition, to link the mechanical properties with the microstructure transmission microscopy observations were carried out in selected specimens. As a result, factors influencing the microstructure changes at various stages of strengthening were observed. The authors found that the γ’’ phase nucleates mostly homogenously in the temperature range 650-750°C, causing the greatest increase in strength. On the other hand, the γ’ and δ phases are formed heterogeneously at 850°C or after longer annealing in 800°C, which may weaken the material.

Screw holding performance in WPC composites. In this research effort, the impact of fillers’ composition on wood-plastic composites (WPC) made of poly (lactic acid) PLA was tested. The composites varied in filler type (bark, sawdust) and its content in the boards (40, 50, 60%). The composites were manufactured in a two-stage process consisting of extrusion and flat pressing. Analogically prepared HDPE boards were a reference. Composites were tested for density, density profile, and screw-holding ability. Boards based on PLA performed better screw-holding ability than HDPE. The greatest influence was exerted by the share of matrix/filler. An increase in the content of lignocellulosic particles from 40 to 60% (regardless of the type of matrix: PLA or HDPE) generally reduced screw-holding ability. The type of filler (sawdust, bark) was almost 3 times more important in the case of HDPE boards compared to PLA boards.

The purpose of the study was to evaluate the physical and mechanical properties of various textile materials based on polyester and cotton for shoe uppers and lining. For that purpose, the influence of the ratio of a mixture of cotton and polyester fibers on the quality of the fabric was investigated. As a result, fabrics with the same composition but different yarn numbers differed from each other in specified properties. With an increase in the content of polyester, all specified properties increase except for vapor permeability, which makes it possible to correctly select the composition of fabrics for shoes.

Opis:
Results of Friction Stir Welding (FSW) of aluminium 2024 are presented in this paper. Investigations were conducted on the welding machine, built on the base of the conventional, vertical milling machine. The quality assessment of joints was done on the grounds of the visual inspection, tensile and fatigue tests, the analysis of the welds structure and hardness. Heat treatment was not done after the welding process. The goal of the research was to know the relationship between welding parameters and mechanical and microstructural properties of 2024joints. Results indicate that weldability of aluminium alloys of Al 2024 4 mm in thickness with FSW method is good. Properties ofjoints with the FSW method on the milling machine eąuipped with LOWSTIR device fulfil requirements of this kind of joints. The structure is correct and the tensile properties are higher than properties of arc welded joints. With wide range of welding parameters the high quality of joint is possible. Joints welded with the different tools and in different conditions had characteristic shape of nugget, heat affected zone and thermo-mechanically affected zone. The kind of tool is not affected on properties of FSW joint at the same parameters. The proper quality at four different kind of tool is possible to achieve. Fatigue properties of the FSW joints made in correct way are very high, higher than properties of arc welded joints. Hardness profile of welds had characteristic run, typical for joints welded with the FSW method. The LOWSTIR device is not getting worse the quality of FSW joints.

The fiber is extracted from the husk of the coconut seeds which are collected in Sri Lanka. Anyhow the above-mentioned characterization can hardly be seen when it comes to the Sri Lankan context. Since the evaluation of their physical, mechanical, and chemical properties are significant before commencing the material development process and applications for this fiber. Several testing were carried out to evaluate the above-mentioned properties. There, the functional groups of coir fiber were obtained by Fourier Transform Infrared analysis and Crystallinity Index and Crystallite size were determined by X-ray diffraction analysis. The surface morphology and cross-sectional features were investigated through Scanning Electron Microscopy. The thermo-gravimetric method was adopted to study the thermal stability of coir fiber. The density and diameter of coir fiber were measured utilizing pychometric method and optical microscope respectively. Tensile strength was measured using an electronic tensometer and then find out the tensile strength, modulus of elasticity, and elongation at breaking point. The average density of brown coir fibers was 1.018 g/cm3 and average diameters were 0.30 mm. The Crystallinity Index and the crystal-line size were 37.28% and 0.4331 nm respectively. Ultimate tensile strength, Young’s modulus, and Elongation of the coir fiber were ranging from 94–159 MPa, 1.2–1.8 GPa, and 21–67%, respectively.

Based on Energy Calculation Star program and molecular dynamic method, three designed 2,3-bis(hydroxymethyl)-2,3-dinitro-1,4-butanediol tetranitrate-based (BHDBT) propellants are firstly reported and their physicochemical performance are investigated. Results suggest that compared with HMX-based and CL-20-based propellants, the specific impulses of all BHDBT-based propellants surpass or approximate 280 s, which indicates the latter have the potential to be high-energy propellants. The diffusion coefficient of plasticizers in BHDBT-based propellant decrease as the temperature reduces, and reduce in the order: Bu-NENA > TMETN > BTTN. The densities of all BHDBT-based propellants surpass or approximate 1.7 g/cm3. The comparison of elastic constants, Poisson’s ratios and K/G values indicates that the mechanical properties of three BHDBT-based propellants increase in the order (by plasticizer): Bu-NENA < TMETN < BTTN. The bond length analysis of C–NO2 and O–NO2 bond in BHDBT suggests that the former is the trigger bond in the BHDBT-based propellants, and the safety of BHDBT-based propellants and BHDBT crystal decreases in the order: GAP/BTTN/Al/BHDBT > GAP/Bu-NENA/Al/BHDBT ≈ GAP/TMETN/Al/BHDBT > BHDBT. In conclusion, GAP/BTTN/Al/BHDBT propellant has the potential to be a novel high-energy propellant.

In this research, AA7068/Si3N4 composites were fabricated through stir casting with the attachment of ultrasonic treatment. The quenching medium and aging duration significantly influenced the hardness of Al alloy samples. Peak hardness was achieved after 12 h of artificial aging at the temperature of 140°C. The addition of nano Si3N4 significantly refined the microstructure of unreinforced AA7068. The dispersion of intermetallic compounds (MgZn2) and grain boundary discontinuation were noticed after the T-6 heat treatment. Ultimate tensile strength, yield strength, and hardness were improved by 70.95%, 76.19%, and 44.33%, respectively, with the addition of 1.5 weight % Si3N4 compared to as-cast alloy due to the combined effect of heat treatment, hall-Petch, Orowan, thermal miss match, load-bearing strengthening mechanisms and uniform dispersion of reinforcement. A reduction in percentage elongation was noticed due to composites’ brittle nature by the effect of ceramic Si3N4 particles’ inclusion. The fracture surfaces reveal ductile failure for alloy and mixed-mode failure in the case of composites.

Opis:
Influence of alder (Alnus glutinosa Gaerthn.) veneers on selected mechanical properties of layered pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) composites. The aim of the study was to analyse the influence of using hardwood veneers in the base layer on selected mechanical properties of composites made of coniferous veneers dedicated for flooring applications. The modulus of elasticity and stiffness at three-point bending were determined in static, dynamic and fatigue tests. All tested mechanical properties of pine-alder composites showed, to a different extent, higher values than composites with a base layer made only of pine veneers.
Wpływ zastosowania obłogu olchowego (Alnus glutinosa Gaerthn.) na wybrane właściwości mechaniczne kompozytów warstwowych z drewna sosnowego (Pinus sylvestris L.). Celem badań była analiza wpływu zastosowania fornirów z drewna liściastego w warstwie podbudowy na wybrane właściwości mechaniczne kompozytów z fornirów iglastych przeznaczonych do aplikacji na podłogach. Określono moduł sprężystości oraz sztywność przy zginaniu trzypunktowym w testach: statycznym, dynamicznym oraz zmęczeniowym. Wszystkie badane właściwości mechaniczne kompozytów sosnowoolchowych wykazały, w różnym stopniu, wyższe wartości od kompozytów o podstawie wykonanej jedynie z obłogów sosnowych.

The work deals with the mechanical properties and biological behaviour of composite materials made of polyether ether ketone (PEEK) polymer and carbon fibers (CF) designed for laryngeal biomaterials. Two types of PEEK–based matrix composites containing carbon fibers in the form of cloth (2D) and short fibers (MD) were made. The composite samples were obtained via hot mol-ding of PEEK/CF prepregs. Mechanical durability of the composite samples aging in Ringer’s solution at 37oC was analyzed. The samples were dynami-cally loaded under bending force up to 106 cycles. The ultrasonic wave propagation method was applied to study changes in the composites. The mechanical changes were analyzed, taking into consideration the anisotropic structure of the composite samples. The layered composite samples were modified with multiwalled carbon nanotubes (CNTs). The changes in mechanical stability of the composite samples were not significant after fatigue testing up to 1·106cycles. The biological tests were carried out in the presence of hFOB-1.19-line human osteoblasts and HS-5-line human fibroblasts. The level of type I collagen produced from both types of cells was determined by ELISA test. The tests showed differen-ces between the samples with regard to the viability of the cells.

In this work results of poly(propylene) fibers (PP), from recycling process, added into concrete mixture based on portland cement was characterized. The main purpose of this research was to identify direct influence of the fibers addition on the concrete mechanical strength. The recipe of the concrete was prepared using three types of aggregates with different grain size: 0.125–0.250, 0.250–0.500 and 0.500–1.000 mm, deflocculant based on polycarboxylates, water and portland cement (42.5 MPa). To identify structures of the researched samples and fibers light microscopy (LM) observation was performed. Basic properties of concrete mixture were defined by slump cone test and setting time. Mechanical properties such as compressive strength and bending test after 1, 7, 14 and 28 days were characterized. Obtained results were compared with mixtures without fibers modifications. Study was proven that all chosen fibers from recycled origin revealed increased effect on final mechanical properties of concrete and are very perspective for future application in concrete technology.

In this research, multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) are used as the reinforcement in an epoxy resin with weight percentages (0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8, 1)wt%, respectively, by using both direct (nonhomogeneous) and homogeneous dispersion mixing processes to prepare (epoxy/MWCNTs) nanocomposites. Tensile and drop weight impact tests are used to evaluate mechanical properties of the composites. Results show that homogeneous dispersion has a great effect on enhancing mechanical properties of multi-wall carbon nanotube reinforced composites. Adding 0.2 wt% of MWCNTs enhances and increases tensile properties, and adding 0.6 wt% of MWCNTs enhances impact properties.

One of the aspects of sustainable development is the reduction of the concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere. This could be achieved for example by the reduction of fuel consumption. That is why the research for the new construction and material solutions regarding the reduction of the weight of vehicles is so important. Alongside weight reduction of different kinds of vehicles, there is also the possibility of the application of alternative propulsion systems. The lower total vehicle weight allows to extend the lifetime of the batteries with the reduction of recharge cycles. The use of the aluminum base AlZnMgCu as cast alloy which is known as 7xxx series plastic forming alloy, allows to significantly reduce the weight of the components manufactured as cast structures, ensuring high strength properties. The wide range of the solidification temperature, which is more than 150°C, characterizes this alloy with a high tendency to create micro and macro porosity. The study presents the relationship between the cooling rate and the area of occurrence and percentage of microporosity. Obtained results were linked to the local tensile strength predicted in the simulation analysis. The evaluation of the microporosity was performed on the basis of the CT (computed tomography) and the analysis of the alloy microstructure. The microstructure analysis was carried out on a test specimen obtained from the varying wall thickness of the experimental casting. The evaluation of the mechanical properties was conducted on the basis of the static tensile test.

The main aim of the presented research was examination of new tribological pairs made of different types of steel. Materials of disc probes were submitted to unusual heat treatment processes and salt bath nitriding. The research is focused on the friction coefficients and mass losses of the material probes. Based on the results it was noticed that the best wear resistant pair was bearing steel 100Cr6 coupled with high speed steel S705. The lowest friction coefficient appeared for the pair bearing steel 100Cr6 and maraging steel C350.

In the present time, advanced high strength steel (AHSS) has secured a dominant place in the automobile sector due to its high strength and good toughness along with the reduced weight of car body which results in increased fuel efficiency, controlled emission of greenhouse gases and increased passengers’ safety. In the present study, four new advanced high strength steels (AHSS) have been developed using three different processing routes, i.e., thermomechanical controlled processing (TMCP), quenching treatment (QT ), and quenching & tempering (Q&T) processes, respectively. The current steels have achieved a better combination of the high level of strength with reasonable ductility in case of TMCP as compared to the other processing conditions. The achievable ultrahigh strength is primarily attributed to mixed microstructure comprising lower bainite and lath martensite as well as grain refinement and precipitation hardening.

In this article the structural and mechanical properties of grain refinement of Cu-Sn alloys with tin content of 10%, 15% and 20% using the KOBO method have been presented. The direct extrusion by KOBO (name from the combination of the first two letters of the names of its inventors – A. Korbel and W. Bochniak) method employs, during the course of the whole process, a phenomenon of permanent change of strain travel, realized by a periodical, two-sided, plastic metal torsion. Moreover the aim of this work was to study corrosion resistance. The microstructure investigations were performed using an optical microscope Olimpus GX71, a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and a scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM). The mechanical properties were determined with INSTRON 4505/5500 machine. Corrosion tests were performed using «Autolab» set – potentiostat/galvanostat from EcoChemie B.V. with GPES software ver. 4.9. The obtained results showed possibility of KOBO deformation of Cu-Sn casting alloys. KOBO processing contributed to the refinement of grains and improved mechanical properties of the alloys. The addition of tin significantly improved the hardness. Meanwhile, with the increase of tin content the tensile strength and yield strength of alloys decrease gradually. Ductility is controlled by eutectoid composition and especially δ phase, because they initiate nucleation of void at the particle/matrix interface. No significant differences in the corrosion resistance between cast and KOBO processed materials were found.

The objective of the study was to determine the feasibility of plastic forming by hot rolling of the AA2519 aluminium alloy sheets and cladding these sheets with a layer of the EN AW-1050A alloy. Numerous hot-rolling tests were carried out on the slab ingots to define the parameters of the AA2519 alloy rolling process. It has been established that rolling of the AA2519 alloy should be carried out in the temperature range of 400-440°C. Depending on the required final thickness of the sheet metal, appropriate thickness of the EN AW-1050A alloy sheet, used as a cladding layer, was selected. As a next step, structure and mechanical properties of the resulting AA2519 alloy sheets clad with EN AW-1050A alloy was examined. The thickness of the coating layer was established at 0,3÷0,5mm. Studies covered alloy grain size and the core alloy-cladding material bond strength.

Microstructure and mechanical properties of the 316L steel composite reinforced with TiB2 phase were examined. The test materials were obtained by SPS technique from powders. From testing of the mechanical properties it follows that the optimum temperature for the fabrication of 316Lsteel-TiB2 composites by SPS is 1100°C. Studies have also proved that the critical content of TiB2 phase in steel matrix should not exceed 6vol%. Above this level, the plastic properties of the composite become unstable and strongly dependent on the time of sintering.

Opis:
Mechanical damage occurring during harvest, transportation or on various stages of processing of fruit and vegetables (in particular ground cucumbers) may lead to spoiling and disqualification of final products. Therefore investigations have been conducted to determine the cucumber’s resistance to mechanical damage and possible water loss in the raw material, as well as to enable the selection of best cucumber varieties suitable for processing. The goal of the conducted research was the determination of the impact of the cucumber variety, ozonation and the composition of the brine with the addition of probiotic bacteria on the mechanical properties and the microbial status of the final product. Mechanical properties were determined using a Zwick/ Roell Z010 machine and the data on the microorganisms were collected using Trypicase soy agar and MALDI TOF MS Biotyper. Other bacteria were detected using Man, Rogosa, and Sharpe agar media. The results indicate that a pre-ozonation or the addition of the probiotic both have a positive impact on the mechanical properties of the investigated product after the souring procedure. It was concluded the impact of both procedures on the puncture strength of final product was dependent on fruit variety.

In recent years, a number of methods for refining the structure of metals by severe plastic deformation (SPD) have been developed. Some of those methods permit grain refinement to a nanometric level. These methods include, among others, high pressure torsion (HPT), equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) and hydrostatic extrusion (HE). The aim of this paper was a more detailed description of these methods and presentation of exemplary applications of these methods for structure refinement and improvement of mechanical properties of chosen materials. The results obtained in the present study show that the microstructures of the materials subjected to SPD studied in this work displayed considerable refinement, characterised by the formation of nanosized grains. Such a refinement resulted in increased tensile strength and hardness of the SPD materials studied in this work. In view of the results obtained on a large number of metals and alloys, a conclusion can be drawn that SPD could become an attractive way of processing materials for variety of applications.

The study attempts to investigate the influence of severe plastic deformation (SPD in the hydrostatic extrusion (HE) process on the anisotropy of the structure and mechanical properties of the AA 6060 alloy. Material in isotropic condition was subjected to a single round of hydrostatic extrusion with three different degrees of deformation (ε= 1.23, 1.57, 2.28). They allowed the grain size to be fragmented to the nanocrystalline level. Mechanical properties of the AA 6060 alloy, examined on mini-samples, showed an increase in ultimate tensile strength (UTS) and yield strength (YS) as compared to the initial material. Significant strengthening of the material results from high grain refinement in transverse section, from »220 μm in the initial material to »300 nm following the HE process. The material was characterized by the occurrence of structure anisotropy, which may determine the potential use of the material. Static tensile tests of mini-samples showed »10% anisotropy of properties between longitudinal and transverse cross-sections. In the AA6060 alloy, impact anisotropy was found depending on the direction of its testing. Higher impact toughness was observed in the cross-section parallel to the HE direction. The results obtained allow to analyze the characteristic structure created during the HE process and result in more efficient use of the AA 6060 alloy in applications.

Compression strength and other mechanical properties of particleboards induced by density. The aim of the paper was to investigate the contractual compression strength and modulus of elasticity under compression of six types of commercially available particleboards of various thickness, density and surface finish. The basic mechanical and physical characteristics of the tested panels (modulus of elasticity and modulus of rupture during bending, density and density profile) were also performed. The studies showed that the compression strength raises linearly with panels’ density raise, and the modulus of elasticity under compression is linearly opposite, depending on the panels’ density.
Wytrzymałość na ściskanie i inne właściwości mechaniczne płyt wiórowych w zależności od ich gęstości. Celem badań było określenie umownej wytrzymałości na ściskanie i modułu sprężystości przy ściskaniu sześciu rodzajów dostępnych na rynku płyt wiórowych o różnej grubości, gęstości i wykończeniu powierzchni. Przeprowadzono także charakterystykę podstawowych właściwości mechanicznych i fizycznych badanych płyt (moduł sprężystości przy zginaniu i wytrzymałość na zginanie, gęstość i profil gęstości). Badania wykazały, że wytrzymałość na ściskanie rośnie liniowo wraz ze wzrostem gęstości płyt wiórowych, a liniowa zależność modułu sprężystości podczas ściskania od gęstości płyt jest odwrotnie proporcjonalna.

Opis:
Thanks to their excellent strength and durability, composite materials are used to manufacture many important structural elements. In the face of their extensive use, it is crucial to seek suitable methods for monitoring damages and locating their origins. The purpose of the article was to verify the possibility of applying the acoustic emissions (AE) method in the detection of damages in the structures of composite materials. The experimental part comprised static tensile tests carried out on various sandwich composites, including simultaneous registration of elastic waves with increasing loads, carried out with the use of an acoustic-electrical sensor connected. The signal obtained from the sensor was then further processed and used to draw up diagrams of the AE hits, amplitude, root mean square of the AE source signal (RMS) and duration in the function of time. These diagrams were then applied on their corresponding stretching curves, the obtained charts were analysed. The results obtained point to a conclusion that the acoustic emissions method can be successfully used to detect and locate composite material damages.

In this paper the subsequent stages of tire rubber coupons mechanical properties experimental assessment are presented. Experimental uniaxial tension and compression tests were carried out on the strength testing machine with the assistance of high-speed camera and special software for strain measurements. Obtained stress-strain curves were applied into the chosen Mooney-Rivlin constitutive rubber material model in order to estimate necessary material constants. Simultaneously, the numerical off-road vehicle tire model was developed. Geometry of the tire and rim was achieved using a 3D scanning method. Moreover, with the assistance of microscope and X-ray device the tire cords pattern was verified, which in the next stages was implemented into the FE model. Consequently, tire radial deflection test was simulated in order to validate evaluated material constants and proposed concept of the numerical tire modelling. Obtained results were compared with the actual deflection test data included in technical documentation of the tire.

Nano-size β-tricalcium phosphate powders with average grain size of 80 nm were prepared by the wet chemical precipitation method with calcium nitrate and di-ammonium hydrogen phosphate as calcium and phosphorus precursors, respectively. The precipitation process employed was also found to be suitable for the production of sub-micrometre β-TCP powder in situ. The sinterability of the nano-size powders, and the microstructure, mechanical strength of the prepared β-TCP bioceramics were investigated. Bioceramic sample characterization was achieved by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and density measurements. Powders compacted and sintered at 800, 900, 1000 and 1100 °C showed an increase in relative density from 70 % to 93 %. The results revealed that the maximum hardness of 240 HV was obtained for β-TCP sintered at 1100 °C.

In this work, an attempt at determination of mechanical properties by means of a method based on magnetic Barkhausen emission measurements was proposed. The specimens made of P91 steel were subjected to creep or plastic flow which were interrupted after a range of selected time periods in order to achieve specimens with an increasing level of strain. Subsequently, measurements of magnetic Barkhausen emission were carried out, and then static tensile tests were performed in order to check variations of basic mechanical parameters. It is shown that evident relationships between the yield point/ultimate tensile strength and some parameters of the Barkhausen emission exist.

The paper presents results of tests conducted on the elements of medical devices - slings used in medical lifts - manufactured using additive technologies. The project assumed to produce 100 samples of clips with varying design, material and orientation parameter. Samples were manufactured using FDM and SLA processes and then tested for mechanical strength, load transmission and functionality, using certified equipment. The paper shows full methodology and the obtained test results.

Opis:
Influence of apple wood waste from the annual care cut on the mechanical properties of particleboards. As part of the work, the influence of the share of apple wood waste from the annual care cut on the mechanical properties of 3-layer particle boards was examined. Particleboards were prepared using two variants of the specific maximum pressing pressure of 1.5 MPa and 2.5 MPa and mass share of particles from apple wood waste at the level of 0%, 25%, 50% and 75%. The results of the tests show a decrease in the value of the modulus of rapture and modulus of elasticity with the increase of the share of the additive in particleboard. In spite of the decrease of the value of the modulus of rapture and modulus of elasticity, all produced particleboards with the application of specific pressing pressure at the level of 2.5 MPa, met the requirements for P2 type particle board included in the PN 312: 2011 standard.
Wpływ udziału odpadowego drewna jabłoni z rocznego cięcia pielęgnacyjnego na właściwości mechaniczne płyt wiórowych. W ramach pracy zbadano wpływ udziału odpadowego drewna jabłoni pochodzącego z rocznego cięcia pielęgnacyjnego na właściwości mechaniczne 3-warstwowych płyt wiórowych. Wytworzono płyty przy zastosowaniu dwóch wariantów jednostkowego maksymalnego ciśnienia prasowania 1,5 MPa i 2,5MPa i udziale masowym wiórów z odpadowego drewna jabłoni na poziomie 0%, 25%, 50% i 75%. Wyniki przeprowadzonych badań wykazują spadek wartości wytrzymałości na zginanie statyczne oraz modułu sprężystości przy zginaniu statycznym wraz ze wzrostem udziału w płycie odpadowego drewna jabłoni. Mimo spadku wartości wytrzymałości na zginanie statyczne oraz modułu sprężystości przy zginaniu statycznym wszystkie wytworzone płyty wiórowe przy zastosowani jednostkowego ciśnienia prasowania na poziomie 2,5MPa, spełniały wymagania dla płyt wiórowych typu P2 zawarte w normie PN 312:2011.

Opis:
The effect of the compaction rate on the structure, microstructure and properties of Fe-Al sinters obtained during the SHS reaction is presented in this paper. It was found that increasing the uniaxial pressing pressure led to the increase of the contact area between iron and aluminium particles, which improved the conduction and lowered heat losses during the self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS) reaction and thus result with a sintered material with an improved phase homogeneity. On the other hand, an increase in the pressing pressure causes air be trapped in the pores and later on reacts with iron and aluminium to form oxides. In this work, the shrinkage course was analysed at six different pressing pressures: 50, 100, 150, 200, 300 and 400 MPa. The green compacts were then subjected to the PAIS process (pressure-assisted induction sintering) at a temperature of 1000°C under a load of 100 kN for 5 min. Such prepared samples were subjected to density, porosity, and microhardness (HV0.1) measurements. X-ray diffraction phase analysis and SEM observations were performed together with EDS chemical composition measurements. For studied chemical composition of the samples and sample geometry, 200 MPa compacting pressure was found to be optimal in order to obtain the best sample homogeneity.

The purpose of the present work was the elaboration of research methodology of the exhaustion degree of performance properties of pipes based on unsaturated polyester and glass fibers, which were manufactured by the cross winding method on a poly(vinyl chloride) core. Within the frame of the work we conducted fatigue-ageing tests being the simulation tool of the degradation process of polyester-glass pipes. Diagnosis of the composite material condition was conducted with the use of nondestructive ultrasonic testing with the application of the echo method, in which the transition time of ultrasonic wave was determined as the identifying parameter. The registered transition time of ultrasonic wave allowed the identification of the material condition during the course of pipes exploitation.

The paper presents low-cycle fatigue (LCF) characteristics of selected magnesium alloys used, among others, in the automotive and aviation industries. The material for the research were bars of magnesium alloys AZ31 and WE43 after hot plastic working. Due to their application(s), these alloys should have good/suitable fatigue properties, first of all fatigue durability in a small number of cycles. Low-cycle fatigue tests were carried out on the MTS-810 machine at room temperature. Low-cycle fatigue trials were conducted for three total strain ranges Δεt of 0.8%, 1.0% and 1.2% with the cycle asymmetry factor R = –1. Based on the results obtained, fatigue life characteristics of materials, cyclic deformation characteristics σa = f(N) and cyclic deformation characteristics of the tested alloys were developed. The tests have shown different behaviors of the tested alloys in the range of low number of cycles. The AZ31 magnesium alloy was characterized by greater fatigue life Nf compared to the WE43 alloy.

The melt cleaning is an important aspect in the production of high-quality aluminum castings. Specifically inclusions within the melt and an excessively high hydrogen content lead to defects and undesired porosity in the castings. Although it is possible to reduce the amount of hydrogen and oxidic inclusions by purge gas treatment and the use of melting salts, it is impossible toremove oxides (bifilms) created during filling of gating system. Paper deals with the effects of melt quality and the placement of a filter in the filling system on Al-7%Si-Mg alloy mechanical properties. Three different filters were used: (a) rectangular ceramic pressed filter with 3 mm thickness (b) cubical pressed ceramic filter with thickness 10 mm (c) cubical pressed ceramic filter with thickness 22 mm. The results showed that the highest tensile strength values were obtained from the filter with thickness of 22 mm. Numerical simulation analysis of the filling process showed that velocity reduction by filter is the major phenomenon affecting the mechanical properties. Another evaluated aspect during experiments was capability of filters to retain old bifilms. For this purpose multiply remelted alloy was prepared and analyzed. Results showed that filter efficiency increases with decreasing melt quality as a result of possibility to retain "old” bifilms better than small and thin "new” bifilms.

The microstructures and mechanical properties of T92 martensitic steel/Super304 austenitic steel weld joints with three welding consumables were investigated. Three types of welding materials ERNiCr-3, ERNiCrCoMo-1and T-304H were utilized to obtain dissimilar welds by using gas tungsten arc weld (GTAW). The results show that heat affect zone (HAZ) of T92 steel consists of coarse-grained and fine-grained tempered martensites. The microstructures of joints produced from ERNiCrCoMo-1 consist of equiaxed dendrite and columnar dendrite grains, which are more complicated than that of ERNiCr-3. In the tensile tests, joints constructed from ERNiCrCoMo-1 and T-304H met the ASME standard. The highest fracture energy was observed in specimens with the welding material ERNiCrCoMo-1. Ni content in weld seam of ERNiCrCoMo-1 was highest, which was above 40%. In conclusion, the nickel alloy ERNiCrCoMo-1 was the most suitable welding material for joints produced from T92 martensitic steel/Super304 austenitic steel.

Opis:
An analysis of the effect of drawing speed on the formation of a zinc coating in the multi-stage fine steel wire drawing process has been carried out in the article. Pre-hardened 2.2 mm-diameter material was drawn into 1.00 mm-diameter wire in 6 draws on a multi-stage drawing machine. The drawing process was carried out at a drawing speed of 5, 10, 15, 20 and 20 m/s, respectively. Mechanical tests were tests were performed for the final wires to determine their yield strength, ultimate tensile strength, uniform and total elongation and reduction in area. The thickness of the zinc coating on the wire surface was determined by the gravimetric method and based on metallographic examination. The use of electron scanning microscopy, on the other hand, enabled the identification of individual phases in the zinc coating. The above investigations were supplemented with corrosion testing of 1.00 mm-diameter wires. It has been demonstrated that drawing speed significantly influences not only the thickness of the zinc coating on the drawn wire surface, buts also its morphology and corrosion resistance.

In this paper, the mechanical properties of hybrid chitosan hydrogels were investigated using the texture profile analysis test. Scaffolds obtained from a polysaccharide of various molecular weights were studied, which, with the addition of glycerophosphate salt, formed a three-dimensional structure in vivo. The obtained systems were also enriched with collagen and calcium carbonate to improve the mechanical properties. The determined texture parameter values indicate that the mechanical properties of the hybrid hydrogel depend on the molecular weight of the polymer, the type of solvent and, the pH-neutralizing substance, as well as the type and concentration of the filler. Moreover, in some cases the TPA test was the only way to evaluate the mechanical properties of the obtained hydrogels due to the inability to determine the Young's modulus. Consequently, the texture analysis test is a valuable tool for selecting solutions depending on the intended application of the scaffolds.

Chitosan is widely applied in biomedical and cosmetic fields. For this reason, there is a need to modify this biopolymer to achieve new properties of chitosan-based materials. The properties of chitosan can be modified by several cross-linking methods. In this work, we used the chemical cross-linking of chitosan with tannic acid, after which cross-linked chitosan was shaped into a 3D structure by the lyophilisation process. For the material obtained, FTIR-ATR analysis was performed to characterise the structure of cross-linked chitosan. Moreover, mechanical properties and swelling properties were measured for chitosan before and after cross-linking. The results show that several properties of chitosan can be changed after cross-linking by tannic acid. The positions of bands in the FTIR spectra of chitosan were shifted after cross-linking. Mechanical properties were altered for cross-linked chitosan. However, the highest compressive modulus was observed for pure chitosan. The lowest compressive modulus was observed for chitosan cross-linked with 20 wt% of tannic acid. Swelling behaviour also depends on the cross-linking of chitosan. It decreases for chitosan after cross-linking by tannic acid. Overall, the properties of cross-linked chitosan depend on the amount of tannic acid used for modification. This method of cross-linking can be useful for obtaining materials with specific properties.

The purpose of this study is to develop a methodology for material design. This methogology will enabling the selection of production descriptors to ensure the required mechanical properties of structural steels specified by the designer of machinery and equipment. The selection is performed by using a computational model developed with use of artificial intelligence methods and virtual environment. The model is designed to provide impact examinations of these factors on the mechanical properties of steel only in the computing environment. Virtual computing environment allows full usage of the developed intelligent model of non-alloy and alloy structural steel properties and provides an easy, intuitive and user-friendly way to designate these properties for products after heat and plastic treatment. Also, very easy is the determination of chemical composition, treatment conditions and geometric dimensions on the basis of the steels mechanical properties. The proposed solutions allow the usage of developed virtual environment as a new medium in both, the scientific work performed remotely, as well as in education during classes. It is also possible the extension of this model to other groups of materials, not just for steel.

Iron aluminides are iron-aluminum alloys that have excellent resistance to oxidation at high temperatures with low density, high resistance/weight ratio and a low manufacturing cost. Due to its characteristics, these alloys are presented as an option to replace stainless steels in certain applications. This works intends report the casting process and subsequent analyses involving microstructure, mechanical properties, and corrosion resistance of two Fe-Al-C alloys (Fe-11wt%Al and Fe-25wt%Al, containing 0.31-0.37%C), which were prepared in an induction furnace and poured in a permanent mold. Samples of these alloys were characterized and presented elevated hardness values of 37 HRC (alloy Fe-11wt%Al) and 49.6HRC (alloy Fe-25wt%Al) and microstructure with aluminides type Fe3Al and FeAl and also carbides type K. The Fe-11wt%Al alloy exhibited superior resistance to uniform corrosion, although both Fe-Al-C alloys exhibited significantly higher corrosion rates compared to a binary iron aluminide in 0.5M H2SO4 containing naturally dissolved oxygen.

Opis:
A novel Composite Modified Double Base (CMDB) propellant, formed by mechanically mixing aluminium/polytetrafluorethylene (Al/PTFE) powders, was prepared through a rolling process. A variety of tests, such as tensile properties, particle size analysis etc., were carried out to study the influence of PTFE on the CMDB propellant properties. The PTFE deformed from particles to fibres under a uniform shear force, forming a fibre network which greatly improved the propellant’s mechanical properties. Compared to that of the CMDB propellant without PTFE, the elongation of the propellant containing 6% PTFE was increased by 26 times, and moreover, the impact strength was enhanced by 326% at −40 °C. Significantly, the propellant friction and impact sensitivities were reduced by 75.8% and 35.6%, respectively. In addition, the presence of PTFE in the propellant resulted in fluorination of the Al. The gaseous combustion product AlF3 reduced the propellant combustion agglomeration. Consequently, PTFE significantly promoted the propellant’s mechanical performance, decreased the shock (friction, impact) sensitivity and reduced combustion agglomeration.

Opis:
Due to its interesting properties and wide applications in different industries, fabrication of monolithic NiTi with cost-effective methods is an important and attractive issue. One of the economic ways to fabricate NiTi is employing elemental nickel and titanium powders. In this study, effects of using elemental powders as a precursor on the microstructure and mechanical properties of HIP-consolidated NiTi samples will be explored. The result of XRD analysis showed that after HIP process an interwoven structure which consists of NiTi2, Ni3Ti and B2-B19′ NiTi evolves. The formation of NiTi2/Ni3Ti intermetallics is thermodynamically favored which affects different aspects of this alloy: (i) it alters martensitic transformation temperatures; (ii) restricts essential properties of this alloy such as PE and SME, (iii) increases hardness, and (iv) yields to premature fracture at small strains during tensile tests.

Opis:
In the study microstructure and properties of composite multifibre copper-base wires are presented. A decision was made to produce wires with “soft” fibres (Al) and “hard” fibres (Fe). In the study the phenomenon occurring on the border of Al-Cu was also analysed. The produced Cu-Al and Cu-Fe composites presented ordered microstructure with the fibres uniformly distributed in the copper matrix. The composites underwent plastic consolidation to the degree which provided satisfactory mechanical and electrical properties. During the drawing the fibres deformed proportionally with copper matrix therefore their content in the cross section remained unchanged.

Properties of amorphous alloys differ from each other when they are produced at different cooling rates and from different chemical compositions. This paper presents studies of the magnetic and mechanical properties of Fe61Co10 Y8 Nb1 B20, Fe61 Co10 Y8 -W1 B20 and Fe61 Co10 Y8 Mo1 B20 alloys, in the form of plates, produced by the injection of liquid alloy into a copper mould. Based on the performed studies, it was found that the substitution of 1% non-magnetic additive into the alloy composition had little effect, as regards the values of saturation magnetization (Ms ) and Curie temperature (Tc ). However, in the case of the coercive field, the sample with the W addition had a value almost half that of the other two alloys. For all of the studied alloys, the microhardness was about 1180 μHv100, i.e. significantly higher than for the same materials in the crystalline state.

In this study, microstructure, mechanical, corrosion and corrosive wear properties of Mg-xAg the as-cast and extruded alloys (x: 1, 3 and 5 wt.%Ag) were investigated. According to the experimental results, as the amount of Ag added in the casting alloys increases, the secondary phases (Mg4Ag, Mg54Ag17) emerging in the structure have become more clarified. Furthermore, it was observed that as the amount of Ag increased, the grain size decreased and thus the mechanical properties of the alloys increased. Similarly, the extrusion process enabled the grains to be refined and the mechanical properties to be increased. As a result of the in vitro tests performed, the Mg-1Ag exhibited very bad corrosion properties compared to other alloys. On the other hand, according to corrosive wear tests results, a high wear rate and friction coefficient were found for Mg-5Ag alloys.

The paper presents the results of a study investigating the impact of reduced graphene oxide (RGO) on selected mechanical and functional properties of LDPE foils. The foils were made by blow extrusion, with different amounts of RGO added to the granules prior to the extrusion process. The mechanical properties of foil samples were assessed in a static tensile test, and their bacterial resistance was tested. The impact of RGO on antibacterial interactions and the desirable mechanical properties of the foils was analyzed. The results of this study supported the selection of the most advantageous solution for industrial applications.

The aim of this work was to study the microstructure and functional properties of CuNi2Si1 alloy. The material was prepared classically by melting, casting, hot rolling and cold rolling. The obtained strips were processed with combined operations of supersaturation, ageing and one of the intensive deformation method - repetitive corrugation and straightening. The efficiency of RCS operation in shaping of functional properties in precipitation hardened copper alloys depends not only on tool geometry and operating parameters but also on whether and at what stage of strip production the supersaturation operation was applied. Application of the supersaturation before RCS operation broadens the potential to shape the set of functional properties. Comparable functional properties of the precipitation hardened copper alloy strips can be reached without application of the supersaturation operation in their manufacturing processes. The process of RCS applied after annealing, and the potentially slightly lower mechanical properties would be compensated by higher electrical conductivity.

Opis:
Hydroxy-terminated polybutadiene (HTPB) pre-polymer is the main constituent that is responsible for conferring high mechanical properties on composite solid propellants. However, HTPB pre-polymer suffers from oxidative degradation reactions that diminish its mechanical properties and shelf life. Composite solid propellant formulations based on an advanced stabilizing agent (anti-oxidant), Flexzone 6-H, with different curing ratios, 0.7 and 1.1, were developed via mixing and casting under vacuum. The developed formulations were subjected to artificial ageing using Vant Hoff,s formula by isothermal heating at 80 °C for up to 35 days. The change in strain with ageing was evaluated using a uni-axial tensile test. The propellant formulation based on a curing ratio of 0.7 demonstrated a high ageing resistance coefficient and an extended service life of up to 15 years, compared with 5 years for higher curing ratio. A propellant grain is considered to be ‘aged out’ at 30% reduction in its maximum strain value. The propellant formulation based on the 0.7 curing ratio exhibited superior thermal stability as it offered a minimum decrease in heat released after ageing using DSC. Additionally, the 0.7 curing ratio formulations exhibited a minimum change in burning rate and pressure exponent with ageing time. It can be concluded that the propellant with 0.7 curing ratio can maintain its mechanical, thermal, and ballistic properties with ageing.

In this research, Graphene nanoplatelets (GNP) reinforced epoxy nano composites were fabricated via magnetic stirrer and ultra sonification assisted hand layup method. The impact of different weight percentage of GNP (0, 0.25, 0.50, and 1.0%) on different characteristics of nano composites was evaluated. The microstructure analysis of developed nano composite was determined by Field emission scanning electron microscopy. It was examined that epoxy nano composites containing 0.5 wt.% GNP have the highest tensile, flexural, and impact strength compared to neat epoxy. The reduction in tensile and flexural strength is achieved at 1% of GNP. Adding more nanofiller to a certain limit causes non-uniform dispersion and agglomeration of nanoparticles, which results in a reduction in properties. The 1% GNP reinforced nano composite has the highest value of shore hardness.

Two series of polyurethane composites were prepared using NDI- and MDI-based prepolymers and common polyol. NDI-based polyurethane is generally resistant to mechanical wear and rebound-resilient whereas MDI-based PU has cushioning and vibration damping features, and both types can be used as a matrix for load-bearing composites. The objective of this study was to compare the mechanical properties of composites containing 5% vol. of ceramic particles prepared with the use of the mentioned PU systems, and unmodified commercial materials. The effect of various ceramic particles on physical and mechanical properties was studied. The results showed that the mechanical properties changed in comparison to reference materials: E’ improved, and impact strength performed favorably in certain materials. Both the tensile strengths and the elongations at break of the composites were found to decrease with the content of ceramic particles; however, the hardness increased gradually. Since ceramic particles offer better stiffness and hardness, the selected composites could be a viable alternative to the pure commercial PUs available in the industry.

This work provides the values of both the static and the kinetic friction coefficients for chestnut (Castanea sativa Mill.) of Spanish origin. Knowledge concerning these coefficients has its main application in the study of agroindustrial structures and machinery with timber members in contact. This determination was developed taking into account the timber anisotropy to establish surfaces and directions of slipping. A modified direct shear test device was used to conduct the tests and reproduce the tribological system. This procedure was functional and reliable and considered suitable for standardizing the friction measurement between timber surfaces, since this device is widely distributed in geotechnical and materials laboratories and the European codes do not specify a procedure or device to carry it out. The average values obtained were 0.46 for the static coefficient and 0.33 for the kinetic one, without considering the surfaces and directions of slipping. These values ranged between 0.36 and 0.55 for the static friction coefficient and between 0.28 and 0.39 for the kinetic friction coefficient depending on the direction considered and also taking into account the anisotropy of the timber. A good correlation was obtained between both coefficients, thus allowing for the estimation of the kinetic coefficient from the static one.

Opis:
Applying coffee grounds (CG) to sandy, calcareous, and clayey soils resulted in notable effects on soil expansion, cracking, cohesion, internal friction, initial stress and resistance to penetration. In sand, expansion upon saturation was greater after wetting-and-drying cycles. Highest increases were 15.71%, 16.14% and 31.86% for sandy, calcareous and clayey soils, respectively. Effect of CG on cracking was negligible in sand and very slight (<1.0%) in the calcareous soil but marked in clay (14.18% at 10% CG). In sand, cohesion (c) increased significantly with CG up to the 10% content. Cohesion increased by 2.5-folds and 4.5-folds at 5% and 10% CG, respectively. The presence of fine CG grains among larger sand particles, boosted microbial activities, and the resulting cementing and binding effects resulted in increased cohesion. For calcareous soil, cohesion rose from 0.04 kg·cm⁻² to 0.13 kg·cm⁻² as CG increased from 0% to 15%. In clay, maximum cohesion (0.20 kg·cm⁻²) was associated with the 10% CG and was highest of all soils. In sand, the angle of internal friction (φ) decreased notably as CG increased from 5% to 10% but there was no consistent pattern in any of the soils. An increase in initial stress (pi) was observed between 0% and 10% CG in sand and between 0% and 15% in calcareous soil while clay showed no particular trend. Patterns of pi were, thus, consistent with those of cohesion for all soils. Resistance to penetration increased substantially with CG in sand. The effect in calcareous and clayey soils took an opposite trend to that of sand and resistance was generally higher in calcareous soil. Overall effects of CG on resistance were desirable in all soils as far as agriculture (seedling emergence, crop growth, irrigation, etc.) is concerned.

The spherical bearing is widely used in highways, bridges and long-span structures. In order to study mechanical properties of a large-scale spherical bearing, a full-scale finite element model of the spherical bearing was established by using ABAQUS software, and the mechanical properties of the spherical bearing under four working conditions were simulated respectively when the upper bearing plate had different inclination angles. The ultimate bearing capacity of the spherical bearing under vertical tension was analyzed emphatically. The research results show that, in practical applications, the change in bearing capacity caused by the inclination angle of the upper bearing plate should be considered, and the wedge-shaped part should be strengthened.

Duplex Stainless Steels (DSS) and Super Duplex Stainless Steel (SDSS) have excellent integration of mechanical and corrosion properties. However, the formation of intermetallic phases is a major problem in their usage. The mechanical and corrosion properties are deteriorated due to the presence of intermetallic phases. These phases are induced during welding, prolonged exposure to high temperatures, and improper heat treatments. The main emphasis of this review article is on intermetallic phases and their effects on corrosion and mechanical properties. First the effect of various alloying elements on DSS and SDSS has been discussed followed by formation of various intermetallic phases. The intermetallic phases affect impact toughness and corrosion resistance significantly. Their deleterious effect on weldments has also been reviewed.

In this study the effect of the change in the amount of Silicon (Si) occuring in Al-Si alloys on mechanical and machinability properties of the alloy was investigated. The change in mechanical properties and microstructure, which depends on the increase in Si percentage, and the effects of this change on Flank Build-up (FBU), wear on the cutting edge, surface roughness, and machinability were also studied. Alloys in different ratios of Si (i.e. 2 to 12 wt %), were employed in the study. The specimens for tests were obtained by casting into metal moulds. The results obtained from experimental studies indicate improved mechanical properties and machinability, depending on the rise in Si percentage in Al-Si alloys. It is also observed that the increase in Si percentage enhanced surface quality.

In the field of numerical research there are various approaches and methods for structures of porous materials modeling. The solution is the use of fractal models to develop the porous structure. In the case of modeling the geometry of natural (random) materials, there is a problem of compatibility of the FE model geometry and real one. This is a source of differences between the results of calculations and experimental ones. Application of 3D printing technology will allow to receive a real structure in a controlled manner, which exactly reflects the designed structure and is consistent with the geometry of the numerical model. An experimental research on the standard samples made of photopolymer resin using 3D printing technique was presented in the paper. The aim of the research was to determine the base material properties and, consequently, to select the constitutive model, which is necessary to carry out numerical analyses.

The use of plastic wastes in the forest product industry as an additive material is an alternative solution for reducing environmental pollution. In this study, different types of plastic wastes, polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polypropylene (PP), and polystyrene (PS), which have various characteristics and considerable potential as reinforcing materials for wood fibers, were added to high-density fiberboard (HDF) in different mixture ratios (25/75, 50/50, 75/25) with commercial fibers. Changes in some properties of the boards, including density, water absorption, thickness swelling, modulus of elasticity (MOE), bending strength (MOR), and internal bond strength, were determined. It was found that water absorption and thickness swelling ratios were lower in the boards with plastic waste additive than in the control samples. Moreover, the mechanical properties of the samples using plastic waste (except PET) were nearly as good as those of the control samples. The results indicate that PP and PS wastes can be considered for use in the reinforced HDF production process, with different mixture ratios for different usage areas.

Opis:
Hot foil stamping of printed products is very popular in postpress processes. Use of photopolymer materials for stamps producing is a well known process. This work provides operating properties (hardness, deformation and thermophysical properties, wear resistance) research of novel photopolymer materials for direct laser engraving of stamps for hot foil stamping. Research results comparison with requirements to photopolymer materials for printing plates and stamps made it possible to provide a conclusion about suitability of the researched materials for stamps producing.

W pracy przedstawiono wyniki badań granicy plastyczności spieku na osnowie wolframowej wykorzystywanego w produkcji penetratorów czołgowych pocisków podkalibrowych. Badania dynamiczne w zakresie dużych szybkości odkształcenia do [wzor] zrealizowano metodą zmodyfikowanego (dzielonego) pręta Hopkinsona. Na podstawie otrzymanych eksperymentalnych wyników badań dynamicznych stwierdzono, że w obliczeniach inżynierskich można stosować model biliniowy spężysto-idealnie lepkoplastyczny.
The results of strength investigations of the tungsten alloy are discussed in this paper. Dynamic tests have been realized using the split Hopkinson pressure bars techniques at strain rate up to 6ź10 3 s -1.

W pracy zaproponowano metodykę badania reakcji osłon laminatowych na działanie fali podmuchowej oraz pocisku. Układ badawczy umożliwia obciążenie osłony impulsem ciśnienia oraz pociskiem o charakterystykach zbliżonych do obciążenia lekkiego pojazdu po wybuchu granatu. Do rejestracji procesu oddziaływania fali podmuchowej oraz przebijania osłony pociskiem zastosowano technikę rentgenografii impulsowej. Badano dwuwarstwowy układ blacha stalowa-płyta laminatowa. Dokonano analizy otrzymanych wyników doświadczalnych.
A two layered system of steel and laminated plate tested by the specialised set-up that provides equivalent conditions of an experiment to the effect of grenade blast against a light armoured vehicle is presented in the paper. The pulse X ray technology is used to register the behaviour of protecting screen subjected to blast and fragments effects.

Hydraulic fracturing treatments of shale gas reservoirs is pumping process in which millions of gallons of fracturing fluids mixed with proppant materials and thickening agents are pumped into the target shale formation. Fluids are used to create the fractures in the formation and to carry a propping agent which is deposited in the induced fractures to keep them from closing up. Type and percentage of chemical additives that used in a typical fracture treatment varies depending on the conditions of well being fractured. A series of chemical additives are selected to impart a predictable set of properties of the fluid, including viscosity, friction, formation-compatibility, and fluid-loss control. Each component in fracturing fluids serves a specific, engineered purpose and geological structure of rock. The properties of fracturing fluid are very important in the creation and propagation of the fracture. For suc-cessful stimulation fracturing fluid mustto have certain chemical and physical properties. Study of the properties fracturing fluids has ahuge role inthe processes of shale gas extraction. In scientific literature indicates that hydraulic fracturing fluid performance became a prevalent research topic in the late 1980s and the 1990s. The majority of literature pertaining to fracturing fluids related to their operational efficiency and classification. Some of the existing literature offer information regarding the basic chemical components present in most of these fluids. This paper will discuss types of fracturing fluids and it components that may be used for hydraulic fracturing. Comprehensive history of the evolution of hydraulic fracturing fluids in the oil and gas industry plays a significant part in research. This work summarizes requests for fracturing fluids. In addition, this paper shows effect of rock mechanical properties on fracturing fluid selection.

Theoretical and practical research on the influence of temperature on mechanical characteristics of the composite material MM “Steel 1018” has been conducted. Both laboratory equipment used to measure of mechanical properties, the technique of material preparation and the experimental procedure were described. The analysis of the the obtained results revealed that with temperature increase the material yield point goes down.

The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of processing variables on the porosity and fractography of Cr and Cr-Mo PM steels. The measurements were performed on sintered steels made from commercial Höganäs pre-alloyed powders: Astaloy CrA, Astaloy CrL and Astaloy CrM with two different carbon concentrations (0.2% and 0.6%) added in the form of ultra fine graphite powder grade C-UF. Following mixing in Turbula mixer for 30 minutes, green compacts were single-action pressed at 660 MPa according to PN-EN ISO 2740 standard. Sintering was carried out in a laboratory horizontal tube furnace at 1120°C and 1250°C for 60 minutes, in an atmosphere containing 5%H2 and 95%N2. After sintering, the samples were tempered at 200°C for 60 minutes in air. For porosity evaluation computer software was employed. Hitachi S-3500M SEM equipped with EDS (made by Noran) was employed for fracture analysis. The steel based on Astaloy CrM pre-alloyed powder is characterized by fine pores and good mechanical properties. When sintered at 1250°C, it had area of pores approx. 7.12 μm2, ultimate tensile strength (UTS) about 679 MPa and elongation about 4%. The steels were characterized by ductile/cleavage and ductile fractures.

At temperatures below 5°C, the ductility of ZnCuTi alloy sheets is observed to suffer a drastic drop in direction transverse to the rolling direction. Studies have shown that the critical temperature at which this phenomenon occurs is strongly dependent on the alloy structure and parameters of the sheet metal production process. Quite important is also the role of micro-inhomogeneity arising in the chemical composition of the alloy matrix, directly related with the structure of intermetallic precipitates containing Cu and Ti.
W blachach wykonanych z cynku stopowego ZnCuTi w temperaturach poniżej 5°C obserwowane jest zjawisko spadku plastyczności w kierunku poprzecznym do kierunku walcowania. Badania wykazały, że temperatura krytyczna dla występowania zjawiska jest silnie uzależniona od struktury stopu oraz parametrów technologicznych produkcji blach. Duże znaczenie odgrywają także mikroniejednorodności składu chemicznego osnowy, co związane jest bezpośrednio ze strukturą wydzieleń faz międzymetalicznych z udziałem Cu oraz Ti.
