Opis:
The accumulation of large amounts of phytogenic matter, leading to the formation of lignite deposits of economic importance, has been determined by two groups of external factors: (a) climatic factors determining the indispensable production of organic matter and (b) geological factors allowing preservation of this matter in the sediment and its diagenetic transformation in the process of coalification. The overriding item among climatic factors was obviously the production of suitable amounts of phytogenic matter. It could be accumulated only under favourable vegetation conditions and therefore a warm and humid climate was a condition sine qua non for the intensive production of phytogenic matter. Problems of lignite origin do not generally relate to the lack of production of phytogenic material, but to preventing preservation in the sediment due to rapid oxidation of this material in very warm conditions. Therefore, the coal-forming process was constrained by two critical temperature values, which had to be neither too low nor too high, wherein sufficiently high humidity persisted throughout the process. Therefore, the range of mean annual temperature, which ensured favourable conditions for the growth and preservation of phytogenic matter, was from approx. 15.5 to 24°C. In the Cenozoic, such conditions commenced in the Early Oligocene and persisted up to the later Miocene – this was the interval of the most intense anthracogenesis in the Polish Lowlands. In the widespread lowland areas, lush swamp forests and peat fens developed, and thick lignite seams reflect the accumulation of phytogenic matter. This interval began with the cooling at the Eocene/Oligocene boundary and terminated at the beginning of the next cooling and drying phase known as that of the “C4 grassland” in the Late Miocene. Both the critical points are related to the surpassing of temperature limits: too high for the preservation of phytogenic deposits, and too low for the extensive development of lignite-forming vegetation. An important condition for the emergence of a large thickness of phytogenic sediments is primarily an existence of the accomodation space, where a considerable amount of plant matter might accumulate. This occurred only in conditions of dynamic equilibrium between the growth of plant matter and the lowering of the depositional surface, which ensured stabilization of the groundwater level. The rate of subsidence of the depositional surface must be balanced by the rate of vegetation growth. Therefore, no single lignite seam corresponding in age to the whole period of potential accumulation was formed at that time. Rather, a few lignite seams, separated by thick successions of mineral deposits, then formed. The vegetation of the wetlands which created the individual lignite seams was similar, this being mostly a facies element. Differences in the composition of vegetation are found mainly in plant communities outside peat-fens and it is the plants outside of the wetlands which allowed for subsequent dating of the lignite seams. The thermophilous vegetation was replaced by plants of lower thermal requirements during the progressive climate cooling towards the end of the Miocene. The ultimate cooling and completion of peat/lignite production was generated by the Middle Miocene uplift of the Carpathians arc in the Alpine orogeny. This natural barrier considerably limited the circulation of warm and humid air masses from the south to the Polish Lowlands area.

Opis:
Two decades of microthermometric studies of fluid inclusions within cements of Paleozoic sedimentary rocks in Poland are reviewed. The inclusions contain palaeofluids of variable composition: aqueous, brine, and hydrocarbon. They may be primary and/or secondary in origin and have one, two or more phases. They display visual fluorescence in blue, sometimes yellow to red (oil) or dull blue (one phase, methane) colours, or do not fluoresce at all. Based on the fluorescence characteristics in ultraviolet light, the inclusions' hydrocarbons infill character may be estimated. The homogenization temperatures, which correspond to the minimum estimate of the trapping temperatures in the minerals, show variability in respect to the geological history of the area studied. They point to different geological stages in relation to the basin's burial evolution. Microthermometric analyses enable wider interpretation due to the combination of studies of both hydrocarbon and aqueous inclusions. The presence of oil and/or gas in inclusions is proof of the occurrence and/or migration of oil and gas in the rocks of a region.

Opis:
The foraminifera-based biostratigraphy of the Middle and Upper Jurassic of the Polish Lowlands was re-evaluated. Biostratigraphic charts providing ranges of the most important foraminiferal taxa characteristic of individual Jurassic stages are presented in relation to the currently used ammonite-based standard stratigraphic divisions. The study contains the new research on the foraminifera fauna and includes earlier results available in published and archival reports. In the Oxfordian and Lower Kimmeridgian deposits, various foraminiferal assemblages were distinguished with reference to the lithofacies in the individual parts of the Polish Basin and varying influences of the palaeogeographical provinces. Additionally, the foraminiferal zones in the Oxfordian and Lower Kimmeridgian deposits of southeastern Poland are distinguished based on detail study of foraminifers.

Dodatkowo przedstawiono wyniki badań cech mikrostrukturalnych osadu gliny morenowej, prowadzonych w mikroskopie optycznym i elektronowym. Omawiana charakterystyka dotyczy różnych regionów występowania glin morenowych na Niżu Polskim. Dostępność i ilość podstawowych danych wynika głównie z liczby opracowań litologicznych glin morenowych wykonywanych dla poszczególnych arkuszy Szczegółowej mapy geologicznej Polski 1:50 000.
Till is the prominent glacial deposit playing a principle role in Quaternary research. Its lithological features allow geological, geomorphological and sedimentological investigations of depositional environments and subsequent postsedimentary alterations. Therefore, the knowledge on all features of the deposit and on interpretational possibilities of the investigations is so important. The paper presents the results of analyses of granulation and petrographical composition of the gravel and boulder fractions with reworking of gravel clasts. The investigations involved analyses of mineral-petrographic composition of the sand fraction, including feldspar content. Contents of heavy minerals and clay minerals were also analysed. Detailed studies of quartz grains refer to roundness, reworking and microtexture features analysed in the electron microscope. Geochemical and chemical investigations include the main components, microelements, Ca content and pH value. An additional contribution is the results of microstructural investigations of lodgement till, performed with the use of optical and electronic microscopes. The discussed characteristics refer to various regions of till occurrence in the Polish Lowlands. The availability and amount of geological data are dependent on the number of lithological descriptions of tills, performed during the construction of the Detailed Geological Map of Poland, scale 1: 50, 000. Other data are available from publications. The discussion of individual research results is given in a chronological order for particular regions, providing a relatively complete history of development of the research methods in Poland against the background of world achievements.

Opis:
In the years 2010-2013, analysis of rocks that build the sedimentary covers in Poland was carried out from the point of view of energy utilization accumulated in hot dry rocks – used in Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS). As a result of a number of analytical studies, the area situated in the central part of Poland was selected as one of prospective areas for location of EGS in sedimentary rocks. This area encompasses a major part of the Mogilno-Łódź Trough, a part of the Kujawy Swell and a small fragment of the Fore-Sudetic Monocline. The most favourable conditions for development of EGS occur in deposits of the Lower Triassic in the Krośniewice-Kutno vicinity where they are buried to depths greater than 5000 m b.s.l., have thicknesses exceeding 1500 m and are characterized by porosity about 2.5% and permeability about 0.1 mD. In the selected area, thermal characterization of the formation was carried out for location of the EGS in sedimentary rocks. The temperature at the top of Lower Triassic reservoir is in the range 165-175°C. Characterization of petrophysical parameters constituted the basis for further modelling of EGS utilization in selected area.

Opis:
The paper presents results of assessment of geothermal energy resources accumulated within nine Paleozoic and Mesozoic aquifers in the Polish Lowlands, carried out within the framework of the project entitled “Geothermal atlases of the Mesozoic and Paleozoic formations – geological analysis and thermal water and energy resources in the Polish Lowlands”. The project commissioned by the Polish Ministry of Environment was carried out in the years 2004–2006 by a research team of specialists from several institutions, with AGH – University of Science and Technology in Kraków as a leader. The paper presents also the results of studies and proposals for geothermal investment projects in selected towns of central and northwestern Poland. Potential locations of the new geothermal projects are determined. Towns with the most favourable geological and hydrogeological conditions and appropriate market of heat consumers for a geothermal plant construction are indicated. The calculation area amounts approximately to 270 thousand km2 that represents more than 87% of the territory of Poland. As regards the amount of accumulated energy, the most interesting and promising areas of the Polish Lowlands occur in the Warsaw, Mogilno–Łódź (in the central part of Poland) and Szczecin (in the northwestern part of Poland) troughs.

Opis:
The quantity, genetic type and maturity of organic matter dispersed in the Kimmeridgian strata of the central part of the Polish Lowlands were determined on the basis of results of Rock-Eval, stable carbon isotope composition of bitumen, their fractions and kerogen, biomarker distribution in saturate and aromatic hydrocarbon fraction, elemental composition of kerogen, vitrinite reflectance and maceral composition analyses of 225 rock samples collected from 32 boreholes. The study was conducted separately for Lower and Upper Kimmeridgian rocks in the Szczecin-Miechów and Kościerzyna-Puławy synclinoriums and Mid-Polish Anticlinorium. The best source rocks with TOC up to 6.8 wt.%, were found in the vicinity of Gostynin in the Mid-Polish Anticlinorium. Generally, the Upper Kimmeridgian strata are fair and good potential source-rocks whereas the Lower Kimmeridgian strata have much lower hydrocarbon potential. Gas-prone, terrigenous Type-III kerogen predominates in the Lower Kimmeridgian strata. The contribution of oil-prone, marine Type-II kerogen increases in the Upper Kimmeridgian rocks. In the whole profile, only low-sulphur kerogen was recorded, although the situation, when high-sulphur Type-IIS kerogen was mixed with re-worked, non-generative Type-IV kerogen supplied to the sedimentary basin with rocks from eroded land, cannot be excluded. Sedimentary conditions of organic material were variable, usually anoxic and suboxic with domination of siliclastic material in mineral matrix. The maturity of the dispersed organic matter refers mostly to the final phase of the microbial process, or to the initial phase of the low-temperature thermogenic process (oil window). The most mature rocks, corresponding up to 0.75% in the vitrinite reflectance scale, were recognised in the deepest buried parts of the basin (axial part of the Mogilno-Łódź Segment of the Szczecin-Miechów Synclinorium). The most prospecting source rocks were recognised in this area.
