The Uprising of Imam Shamil is a tragic and vivid event in the history  of the Caucasus, hence it is not surprising that writers of different peoples from different times turn to it. This article, with the employment of the comparative method, explores the literary image of Shamil created on the basis of historical events by the Polish writer Jakub Gordon in his historical novel Kaukaz czyli Ostatnie dni Szamyla. Powieść historyczna (1865) and by the Dagestan-Russian writer Mariam Ibragimova in her historical trilogy Imam Shamil (1991). The first novel was written by a contemporary of Polish military-political participants in the Caucasian War, who communicated with its witnesses, the second one – by a compatriot of Shamil, a modern Dagestan and Russian writer. The differences in time, place of writing, aesthetic backgrounds, and nationality of the authors of these two novels created in similar genres foresee some discrepancies in their artistic structure, ideological accents and focus on the displayed events.

This article is dedicated to the image of Padua in the diary of August Fryderyk Moszyński (1731-1786), a close collaborator of King Stanislas August Poniatowski, architect, director of royal buildings, and promoter of the Warsaw theatre. The diary, which covers a journey to France and Italy (1784-1786), has been partially published in the original French version (1930; 2010) and Polish translation (1970). The diary is remarkable for Polish 18th-century odeporic literature due to its critical approach, quasi-scientific character, and interest in contemporary developments. In this article, the author establishes the dates of Moszyński’s stay in Padua and then analyses elements such as the descriptions, impressions, and assessments of urban environments; buildings, pictures, people, and events; as well as cultural and scientific life. The portrait of Padua drawn by Moszyński is compared with that which emerges from other travelogues and texts presented to the Polish public at the time, in particular with the description of Italy that appeared in the Warsaw journal Pamiętnik historycznoPolityczny in 1787. The analysis of the travelogue passages relating to the two stays in Padua confirms the versatility of the traveller. The description of Padua by Moszyński is multifaceted, often ironic and personal. He wrote as an expert in architecture and urban spaces; a connoisseur of theatre; a builder of scientific instruments; an admirer of Renaissance artists; a lover of truth in art; and a sharp and critical observer. The last part of the article is dedicated to the circumstances of Moszyński’s death, which, contrary to what may be suggested by the diary, did not occur in Padua but in Venice (on 3 July 1786, at the famous Leon Bianco inn).
L’articolo è dedicato all’immagine di Padova nel Diario di viaggio in Francia e in Italia (1784-1786) di August Fryderyk Moszyński (1731-1786), stretto collaboratore del re Stanislao Augusto Poniatowski, architetto, direttore di edifici reali, promotore del teatro di Varsavia. Il diario è stato parzialmente pubblicato in francese (1930, 2010) e in traduzione polacca (1970). Nella letteratura odeporica polacca del Settecento si distingue per il suo approccio critico, il carattere quasi scientifico e l’interesse per il presente. Una volta fissate le date dei soggiorni a Padova, vengono analizzati elementi quali descrizioni, impressioni e valutazioni relative ad ambienti urbani, edifici, quadri, persone ed eventi, nonché la vita culturale e scientifica. Il ritratto di Padova disegnato da Moszyński è messo a confronto con altri odeporici dell’epoca e quello che emerge da testi su argomenti simili presentati al pubblico polacco nello stesso periodo, in particolare con la descrizione dell’Italia apparsa a puntate sulla rivista varsaviana Pamiętnik historyczno-Polityczny nel 1787. L’analisi dei brani del diario relativi ai due soggiorni a Padova conferma la versatilità del viaggiatore. La descrizione di Padova è sfaccettata, spesso ironica e personale. Moszyński scrive da esperto di architettura e di spazi urbani, conoscitore di teatro, costruttore di strumenti scientifici, ammiratore di artisti rinascimentali, amante della verità nell’arte, osservatore acuto e severo. L’ultima parte del saggio è dedicata alle circostanze della morte di Moszyński, che - contrariamente a quanto affermato in alcune fonti e a quanto suggerito dal diario stesso - non è avvenuta a Padova, bensì a Venezia (il 3 luglio 1786, nella famosa locanda del Leon Bianco).

The phenomena of the old age and childhood are known through projection of intergenerational relation in the family. The subject of interpretation quest in selected texts mainly of social prose for youth is mostly poetical literary image of the relation of a grandparent to the main child character and its variations in the topic. The author follows the way the authorial vision is being transformed into particular original forms and meaning in the texts of Dušan Dušek (The oldest from all sparrows), Peter Holka (A Summer on a waggoner´s horse) and Peter Glocko (I am not afraid of vacations, Robinson and Gramp Millionaire) but also in the context of the other selected authors, whose texts are topically oriented in literary image of the relation between grandparent and his grandchild. The study is not focused on all levels of the epic text, but concentrates on characters and their acting, on the type and language characteristics of the bearers of tradition and teenager.

The paper is devoted to the editorial and translation history of Grazia Deledda’s short stories in Poland before the Second World War, a topic barely touched upon in scholarship so far. I establish which original collections were most successful and examine the circumstances of the publication of the translations, taking into consideration the translators and the profiles of the journals that published the eleven translated short stories. My study of the translations themselves focuses on the translators’ approach to Italian and Sardinian nature and culture and identifies elements that were eliminated, reproduced without explanation, or explained by means of notes. My findings are that only one translation is equipped with footnotes, that the local colour is largely rendered in translation, and that major losses in translation include some elements of descriptions of landscapes and characters.
Il saggio è dedicato alla fortuna editoriale e traduttiva della novellistica deleddiana in Polonia prima della Seconda guerra mondiale, un argomento finora poco studiato. Si stabilisce quali siano state le raccolte originali più fortunate; si esaminano altresì le circostanze della pubblicazione delle traduzioni, prendendo in considerazione le figure dei traduttori e il profilo delle riviste che hanno accolto le undici novelle tradotte. Lo studio delle traduzioni si focalizza sull’approccio dei traduttori nei confronti della natura e della cultura italiana e sarda per approfondire la questione delle scelte traduttive. Ci si chiede in particolare quali elementi sono stati eliminati, quali invece sono stati riprodotti senza spiegazioni o spiegati con uso di note. L’indagine qui condotta ha portato alla conclusione che solo una fra le traduzioni esaminate contiene delle note à piè di pagina, che il colorito locale è stato in gran parte rispettato e che le perdite interessano maggiormente gli elementi descrittivi relativi a paesaggi e personaggi.

LITERATURE. FILM. (Draft affinity) The affinity of film and literature is analyzed in historical perspective, and more broadly, the methodological aspect of comparing and collating together ‘word and image’ ... Recalling the historical aspect, it is easy to find in the sources certain awkwardness of humanistic reflection on not only the relationship between the arts, but especially the division and classification of ‘disciplines of art’. Ancient thinkers tried to resolve this issue citing nine muses, who took care of the individual disciplines. Taxonomy is relevant only in its historical context, because understanding of art and science in those days was completely different from the present. Despite this fact, modern thinkers revised the system many times while different creating taxonomies and introducing other divisions. Cinema was considered as the Tenth Muse the early twentieth century, but that decision was only symbolic. It seems more appropriate to place the relationship of film and literature in the perspective of coexistence of words and images, whose affinity has been obvious in Mediterranean culture in last two thousand years. It manifests itself mainly through painting illustrations of literary topics. However, the temporary nature of perception of both film and literature, seems more appropriate an arena to compare film and literature. Separation of different material in these disciplines is possible. It entails the formation of the perspective of perception of temporary narrative structures, dramatic and semantic, as perception systems common to film and literature. The categories of the moving image and literary image are considered as helpful in detailed analysis. Przedstawiając ewolucję obrazu poczynając od średniowiecznej legendy hiszpańskiej, przez transformacje autorstwa m.in.: Tirso de Moliny, Jeana Baptiste’a Moliera, Ernsta Theodora Amadeusa Hoffmana, George’a Byrona, Aleksandra Puszkina czy Aleksandra Tołstoja, na XX-wiecznych literackich modyfikacjach kończąc, autorka artykułu kieruje swoją uwagę w stronę utworu Kamienny Pan Łesi Ukrainki, podkreśla szczególne miejsce oraz znaczenie kobiecej interpretacji obrazu Don Juana w kręgu europejskiej donżuaniady. This paper is devoted to the New Orleans stage in the writings of the nineteenth-century American literary journalist, Lafcadio Hearn. The major focus is on the writer’s fascination with the city’s unique Southern character which was skillfully grasped and conveyed by Hearn during the decade of his residence in New Orleans. The articles published in the Cincinnati Commercial and the Daily City Item are discussed in terms of the author’s sensual and emotional approach towards what he considered as the greatest assets of New Orleans: its tropicality, the Creole element, the climate, and the women. Special attention is paid to Hearn’s sensitivity to feminine beauty as the crucial determinant of the city image he managed to describe for future generations.

The paper is devoted to the image of New York City created by a representative of American post-war literary non-fiction, Gay Talese. What is especially brought into focus in the analyzed New York – A Serendipiter’s Journey is the approach the writer employs to present his personal picture of the city. Talese’s attitude consists in combining some key techniques of traditional reporting with a more individual and imaginative treatment relying on a wanderer’s/stroller’s point of view. From the perspective of a city traveller New York is unconventionally pictured through its untypical and usually unnoticed aspects such as e.g. forgotten places and odd occupations. It is emphasized that the writer’s image of the city actually results from a number of pictures accumulated in the course of his own and many other individual journeys. Finally, the paper accentuates the effectiveness of the literary journalistic technique of merging the non-fictional with the literary in order to convey the convincing and credible vision of reality.

Since his debut in 2004, Zakhar Prilepin has constantly been present on the Russian cultural scene. A literary scholar, journalist, writer, politician and even a military man, he is the author of a set of highly popular and emblematic novels which portray Russia at the turn of the 21st century. The writer has won many significant Russian literary awards and attracted the attention of both literary critics and the general audience. In the paper, a literary portrait of Zakhar Prilepin is sketched and the reasons for the writer’s popularity are investigated.
Со времени дебюта в 2004 году имя Захара Прилепина постоянно присутствует в литературном пространстве России. Филолог, журналист, писатель, политический деятель и военный, он – автор целого ряда романов, каждый из которых стал символом своего времени и поколения. Писатель получил основные литературные премии России и завоевал признание как маститых критиков, так и обычных читателей. Цель настоящего исследования – сформировать литературный портрет Захара Прилепина, прояснение его популярности среди русских читателей.

Niniejszy artykuł ma na celu przygotowanie badacza literaturoznawcy do prowadzenia dociekań imagologicznych. Tekst ma więc z jednej strony charakter wprowadzający i instrukcyjny, z drugiej zaś przeglądowy i syntetyczny. Składają się nań cztery części: 1) wyjaśnienie trzech podstawowych pojęć imagologicznych: innego/obcego, obrazu oraz etnotypu; 2) omówienie sposobu doboru materiału źródłowego do badań imagologicznych; 3) charakterystyka możliwych sposobów opracowania wyselekcjonowanego materiału tekstowego, a zatem możliwych profili badań imagologicznych; 4) prezentacja kilku najważniejszych ustaleń imagologii i wskazanie związanych z nimi momentów analizy imagologicznej, w których badacz winien zachować szczególną ostrożność.
The aim of this study is to prepare the literary researcher to conduct imagological research. The text is therefore introductory and instructional on the one hand and reviewing and synthetic on the other. It consists of four parts: (1) an explanation of three basic imagological concepts: other / alien, image, and ethnotype; (2) a discussion of the way in which source material for imagological research is collected; (3) the characteristics of the possible ways of developing the selected text material and therefore possible profiles of imagological research; (4) a presentation of some of the most important findings of imagology and an indication of the related moments of imagological analysis, in which the scholar should exercise particular caution.

Artykuł poświęcony jest interakcji Uładzimira Karatkiewicza z młodymi ukraińskimi poetami połowy XX wieku, studiującymi w Kijowie. Kwestię tę zbadano w kontekście ówczesnego życia literackiego, a także przez pryzmat przeglądowego i porównawczo-typologicznego odczytania ich dzieł. Jak wynika z przeprowadzonej analizy, autor białoruski zintegrował się ze środowiskiem, w którym ukształtował się jako pisarz zainteresowany tematyką historyczną i nietuzinkowy czytelnik. Podobnie jak Wasyl Symonenko i Mykoła Som przyczynił się do utrwalenia obrazu społeczności studenckiej owych lat, w szczególności do wzmocnienia atmosfery twórczej. Z pomocą ironii, a także gry z codziennymi szczegółami literaci tego pokolenia starali się odciąć od socrealistycznego obrazu świata i stereotypowych interpretacji ogólnej rzeczywistości. Z kolei dzięki intensywnemu polilogowi początku lat sześćdziesiątych mit uniwersytecki znalazł swoje odzwierciedlenie w strukturze tekstu kijowskiego.
The article is dedicated to the interaction of Uladzimir Karatkievich with young Ukrainian poets from the mid-twentieth century who studied in Kyiv. Such a process is interpreted in terms of literary mores and through an overview, comparative-typological reading of their works. The analysis indicates that the Belarusian author was integrated into an environment in which he was formed as the man of letters interested in historical topics and as an extraordinary reader. Like Vasyl Symonenko and Mykola Som, he recorded the recognizable image of the student community of those years, in particu- lar, strengthening the creative atmosphere. Using irony, as well as playing around with everyday details, the writers of this generation sought to demarcate themselves from the socialist realistic worldview and stereotyped interpretations of facts in general. In turn, thanks to the intensive polylogue among the early Sixtiers, the university myth is reflected in the structure of Kyiv text.

In the theoretical part, we present a historical tradition of the so-called montage effect as a relation between a text and a picture, which relates to the discipline known as linguistics of an image. In the material part, we analyze the intermedial narration technique on the example of a Polish translation of a quasi-novel (a debut novel) by Jaroslav Rudis Niebo pod Berlinem which is examined in the light of Walter Benjamin’s theory of culture.

Opis:
In the nineteenth-century European literary tradition the Jew is represented as 'the Other'. The general image is a stereotypical description of the Jew as a parasite, a sorcerer or a villain. Even when one can specify and set down the linguistic, geographical and historical circumstances in which particular novels and stories were written, many of them incorporate the figure of 'the Jew' as a construct that plays a particular role in the narrative.1 Alongside the development of the European fiction, within the Jewish literary context, the new-Hebrew and Yiddish literatures are born and mature. The writers simultaneously bring in distinct features characteristic of the Jewish background, languages and context, while they also look towards European literary models and pattern their prose, to some extent, on the European style

Opis:
Letters of Michał Grabowski, a romantic novelist and critic, are an example of per-sonal correspondence dominated by reflections on literature and its transformations. In his correspondence, the author often addressed the issue of functioning on the literary scene. My primary objective was to understand how the author evaluated and understood his own literary critical skills. Grabowski’s remarks on himself (and also on the role of a “professional reader”) will allow one to recognize and then to better understand the formation process of his literary critical awareness. In the letters to Józef Bohdan Zaleski we can find comments on the practices of crit-ics and the development of their opinions about individual authors and their works. Therefore, this article is merely a selection of examples that will be used for a more pro-found analysis of the mechanisms of creating a critic’s image.

Wielki kot w małym mieście” Vicki Myron, „W ogrodzie pamięci” Joanny Olczak-Ronikier, „Willa pod Zwariowaną Gwiazdą” Marii Paszyńskiej, „Bibliotekarki” Teresy Moniki Rudzkiej, „Pożegnalny list” Sharon Sali, „Zakochani w słowach” Magdaleny Trubowicz. Dokonano analizy źródeł literatury pod kątem występowania motywu bibliotekarza oraz jego stereotypowego postrzegania. Przedstawiono także przykłady promowania pozytywnego wizerunku bibliotekarza w literaturze współczesnej.
The article is devoted to the image of librarian in today’s works of literature: Tracy Chevalier The Virgin Blue, Charline Harris Real Murders, John Irving Until I Find You, Elisabeth Kostova The Historian, Camilla Läckberg The Hidden Child, Camilla Läckberg The Drawning, David Levithan The Mummy, Agnieszka Lingas-Łoniewska Kiedy zniknę (Eng. When I Disappear), Zygmunt Miłoszewski Entanglement, Vicky Myron The Small-Town Library Cat Who Touched The World, Joanna Olczak-Ronikier In the Garden of Memory, Maria Paszyńska The Crazy Star Villa, Teresa Monika Rudzka The Librarians, Sharon Sala Honor’s Promise, Magdalena Trubowicz Zakochani w słowach (Eng. In Love with Words). The analysis of literature sources was performed in terms of the emerging librarian theme as well as the stereotypical perception of this profession. The work also provides the examples of promoting the positive image of the librarian in contemporary literature.
