Opis:
Kashubian, as a Proto-Slavic dialect, was similar to the Greater Poland and Lesser Poland dialects which with time provided the foundations for the Polish language. However, as early as in the 13th century, differences became noticea-ble resulting from the autonomous development of Kashubian on the periph-ery of the Slavic world. Language is one of the most important ethnic building elements manifested by the Kashubian people since the dawn of ethnic eman-cipation which started in the mid-19th century, when Florian Ceynowa, physi-cian and father of Kashubian national empowerment, created the first Kashubian alphabet, normalised the spelling, compiled the grammar rules and started to write journalistic, scientific and literary texts. In the past, the Kashubians had long lacked the conviction that their vernacular had value. The joint work of many communities, undertaken for the sake of the linguistic status of Kashubian in the 1990s, led first of all to a change of the attitude of the us-ers towards their own language, and subsequently to its recognition as a sepa-rate Slavic language. Kashubian was granted the political and legal status of a regional language in 2005. It satisfies mainly those who have adopted a hybrid identity characterised by being Kashubian in the regional aspect and Polish in the national aspect. However, that status is insufficient for Kashubians repre-senting the national option, who identify themselves as Polish citizens of Kashubian nationality.

Opis:
The publication contains reprints of articles written by Prof. Hanna Popowska-‑Taborska in 2010–2018. Part of the book presents the results of her research on the folk Kashubian lexis, its relation to the vocabulary of other Slavic languages, and new etymological contributions. An important part of the publication is a discussion of the formation of the contemporary Kashubian literary language, with a focus on a critical analysis of its lexis, including numerous neologisms, which was mainly carried out on the basis of a translation Adam Mickiewicz’s poem “Pan Tadeusz”. The analysis also presents the author’s observations about the morphological structure of these neologisms. Furthermore, the publication provides detailed information about the first extensive books on linguistics written in Kashubian, as well as the author's ideas about the future etymological dictionary of the Kashubian language. There are also reflections on the linguistic image of the world that can be observed both in folk Kashubian and the Kashubian literary language. The book is supplemented by a bibliography of the author's work on Kashubian.

The article is dedicated to literature written by women in the Kashubian language. Notably, in Kashubian literature, recent decades have witnessed a revival in women’s writing, resulting in numerous literary works. There are several reasons for this, all determined predominantly by the cultural tradition of Kashubia. The revival in the literary world of female writers and poets most certainly results from numerous complex social and cultural processes, including the growing emancipation, the need for education and opening up to the world. Women writing in Kashubian express themselves in poetry, drama and prose. The works of women writing in Kashubian can be attributed to two stages originating in the 1980s. Among the first poets and writers were Rozalia Narloch (referred to as the “Kashubian Cinderella”), Teodora Kropidłowska, writing under the pseudonym “Deotyma” and Agnieszka Browarczyk. They were followed by the novels and plays by Anna Łajming. The most prominent female authors writing in Kashubian include Maria Boszke, Krystyna Muza, Jaromira Labuda, Ida Czaja, Hanna Makurat, Wanda Kiedrowska, Ewa Warmowska, Elżbieta Bugajna, Bożena Ugowska, Lucyna Sorn, Dorota Wilczewska and Gracjana Potrykus.

The Grammar of the Kashubian Language – recognition and description of the structure of the contemporary Kashubian. Response to criticismThe article is a response to criticism of Hanna Makurat’s book titled The Grammar of the Kashubian Language; the book, published in 2016, is the first normative description of contemporary Kashubian. The Kashubian newspaper Skra has published a review which questioned the substantive content of the entire book. The author of the review showed incompatibilities between the book and Friedrich Lorentz’s Pomeranian Grammar, which was published in 1927–1937. However, the reviewer did not take into account the fact that Lorentz described the system of 76 Kashubian dialects, while Hanna Makurat described the system of contemporary Kashubian literary language, which evolved and developed standard forms. What is more, this review, written by an amateur, became the basis for the publication by the Kashubian Language Council of the statement – not supported by any arguments – that Hanna Makurat’s book was not a normative grammar. Due to lack of arguments, the Kashubian Language Council, after a month and a half, removed this statement from its website. Gramatika kaszëbsczégò jãzëka – rozpoznanie i opracowanie struktury współczesnego literackiego języka kaszubskiego.

The paper is devoted to the reflexes of the old contrast between */u/ and */uː/after labials and velars and in a front position in a word in the Kashubian dialect spoken in Jastarnia. According to descriptions from the late 19th century and the early 20th century, the contrast was preserved at the beginning of a word and in the middle of a word as contrasted with the quantity and quality (with a probable weakening of the first component of the contrast): [u̯ɘ̟] : [u(ː)]. At the end of the word, the contrast was weak and disappeared. According to sources from the mid-20th century, the contrast has been entirely lost in all the positions and [u̯ɘ̟] and [u] are merely free variants of one phoneme /u/. However, an analysis of contemporary material shows clearly that the old contrast was preserved word-initially and word-internally with some cases of simple morphological levelling. Two phonemes, /ʉ/ and /u/, need to be assumed. The current system is strongly correlated with a system documented in the oldest descriptions and could not develop secondarily from a hypothetical system which would merge */u/ and */uː/ to any extent exceeding a free variation in some forms while morphological levelling took place. It seems that the conclusions offered in the publications from the mid-20th century (refuting the existence of the contrast) had an irrational (personal and maybe national) background.

The article discusses the position of the Luzino dialect among Kashubian dialects in the light of phonetic and phonological features. The analysis takes into account eleven vowel features, one consonant feature and two prosodical features. A significant part of the discussed phenomena are the recent phenomena that have gone unnoticed, or been dealt with only marginally in the existing literature on the subject. One archaism links the Luzino dialect with the core central Kashubian area, but it is differentiated by seven innovations. The peripheral central Kashubian dialects indicate stronger relationships with the area of Luzino (one important archaism and one significant north Kashubian innovation). Three archaisms and nine innovations link the Luzino dialect withthe north Kashubian area. Two vocal changes are typical only of the discussed area, and differentiate it from northern as well as southern Kashubian. From the phonetic and phonological point of view, the Luzino dialect should undoubtedly be classified as a marginal north Kashubian dialect.

Artykuł przedstawia wybrane zagadnienia z dziejów pisowni języka kaszubskiego, aby uzasadnić, że zapis ma służyć czytelnikowi. Ceynowa, twórca kaszubszczyzny literackiej dostrzegł, że druk niweluje różnice gwarowe, jest najlepszym przekaźnikiem wiedzy o Kaszubach wśród samych Kaszubów i w świecie. Alfabet wzorował na polskim, bo był to najbliższy Kaszubom słowiański język; znali go m.in. z modlitewników.
This article presents selected issues from the history of Kashubian language orthography to justify the fact that the notation should serve the reader. Ceynowa, the creator of the literary Kashubian language, noticed that written Kashubian eliminates dialect differences and is the best transmitter of knowledge about Kashubia among the Kashubians themselves and in the world. He modelled the alphabet on the Polish one, because it was the closest Slavic language to Kashubians, since they knew it from prayer books. Even today, the identity aspect of a Kashubian-language text stands out, precisely because it is written in Kashubian. The reading of Kashubian needs to be learnt, not only at school, by implementing spelling rules. Spelling exercises (calligraphy, transcription, dictionary-phrase tasks) present a wide range of opportunities for shaping attitudes towards identity. The subject matter of the lessons and the selection of texts, including works of Kashubian literature, are of particular importance and offer a lot of possibilities for showing off. Kashubian as a school subject should prepare Kashubians for participating in their own culture; thanks to reading and writing, this participation in culture can be deepened and become more active.

This article is yet another contribution to a discussion on a grammar handbook on Kashubian written by Hanna Makurat (2016) and, directly, a reply to her text published in edition 53 of the SFPS. First and foremost, it is a presentation of the history of the discussion of Gramatika… in a context of extra-content strategies employed by the author in the dispute that has arisen. Next, 13 linguistic phenomena have been presented (related to spelling, phonetics, morphology, vocabulary and syntax) in relation to which Hanna Makurat clearly referred to her opponents’ criticism in her text published in the SFPS. An analysis has shown that in 12 of them, the reviewers’ comments were fully justified. Last but not least, general and methodological issues are touched upon with reference to grammar itself and the discussion of it to date.

In this article, I would like to present the activities of the Kashubian-Pomeranian Association, an ethnic NGO that has been pretending to represent the Kashubian community since 1956. Kashubians are an ethnic minority, speaking the regional language – Kashubian living in northern Poland. They are predominantly Catholic. The Kashubian-Pomeranian Association, creating and maintaining the Kashubian identity, very often uses the religious [Catholic] setting to give prestige to its actions.

The aim of the present paper is to establish, if the reflexes of *[kj, gj] in Central Kashubian (previously ʨ,ʥ], today [ʧ,ʤ] can be interpreted as allophones of /k,g/ betofe front vowels. This widespread hypothesis is supported by some very regular alternations. It is shown that the previously postulated phonological rule is not acceptable. There still exist some cases, where /k,g/ do not undergo palatalization and assibilation before front vowels, and for which no convincing additional rules can be established ) before the final -em, before the suffix -iw(a)-, in the equivalent of the Polish lexeme giąć, in some loanwords, which cannot be recognized as a result of codeswitching). In this case one hat to accept the existence of distinct phonemes /ʨ,ʥ/. In contemporary Central Kashubian the reflexes of *[kj, gj] underwent coalescence with these of *[ʧ,ʤ]. The latter do not show any significant distributive restrictions, and the mentioned phonological problem is in this case virtually irrelevant for the description of the contemporary stage of the language.

Next to the language, history (or rather historical memory) or inhabited a territory of the common name, religion is considered as one of the determinants of ethnic identity. Ethnicity – which is particularly evident in modern times – is multidimensional, because of many ways we can distinguish or define social groups. Religion, in turn, can be treated as a cultural system. This article deals with the role it plays religion (understood as a system of meanings, as a cultural system) in shaping the identity of an ethnic minority – Kashubs. Kashubians, an ethnic minority living in northern Poland, speak a regional – Kashubian. They are predominantly Catholic, and the Catholic religion plays a significant part in their lives (even today). Opis:
This paper discusses translations of biblical passages into Kashubian which originated in Evangelical circles between the 16lh and 19th centuries. Although the tradition of translation dates back to the 16th century, translation of the entire Bible, or at least one complete biblical book, which would have originated in this particular environment has not been preserved. Presumably it never existed. The oldest translations of biblical texts into Kashubian were generally based on the German language. The first printed book with texts in Kashubian included, among others, eleven works defined as Psalms and a range of short passages originating both from the Old Testament and the New Testament. This very book was the Simon Krofey’s Hymnal published in Gdańsk in 1586. Translation of The Small Catechism of Martin Luther came out approximately half a century later, and similarly to the Krofey’s Hymnal it included many biblical passages. However, the biggest collection of biblical texts which has survived is dated for the turn of the 17th and 18* centuries. These texts are found in the so-called Smoldzinian Perikopes, containing lessons and Gospels for all Sundays and church holidays. Many smaller passages of the older translation of biblical texts represent only occasional translations of biblical passages incorporated in other religious texts. The first intended and methodical translation of texts from the Sacred Scripture into Kashubian was the collection of so-called Smoldzinian Perikopes. Research conducted on these translations allows to conclude that although authors of these translations did not translate from original texts, but in most cases from the German language, their translations of the Bible are characterised by a high degree of faithfulness to the thought of original texts. Moreover, accuracy and efforts to make the texts comprehensible and literary beautiful grant their authors the best testimony.

This article is dedicated to the vocalism of the contemporary Żarnowiec dialect (spoken in Wierzchucino and Nadole). On the one hand, an acoustic and phonetic analysis has identified certain phonetic archaisms (like the central or frontal and central pronunciation of /u/) and has aided in-depth descriptions of sounds previously referred to in a very imprecise way (*/aː/ pronounced as a near-close rounded vowel, central, [ɵ] type). On the other hand, the analysis has provided grounds for acknowledging the important phonetic changes which have occurred in the Kashubian dialect in the past few decades; some of these consist in completing specific phenomena. These include the general dissemination of the diphthongal pronunciation of stressed /e, o, ɛ, ɔ/, the highly back and rounded pronunciation of /ɒ/, the front and open pronunciation of /æ/ in Nadole and the extended scope of the phonological and phonetic reduction of non-stressed vowels (the phonemes /ɘ̟, ɛ, æ/ are always, /ɵ, e/ nearly always and /i/ is relatively rarely pronounced in the same way when not stressed). The result of this reduction is a distinctly centralized vowel or a central vowel of the [ɜ] type. From the phonological point of view, attention should be paid primarily to the ultimate loss of nasal vowel phonemes. Contrary to existing descriptions, the vocal continuant */ã/ has not been merged phonologically with /e/ but a new oral phoneme /ɘ̟/ has been established. It is worth emphasizing that a majority of the identified changes do not bring the dialect closer to the Polish language, rather, they take it further away from it.

Kashubian national discourse – an anthropological viewpointAn animated discussion concerning the status of the Kashubs is at present ongoing in Kashubia. In 2005, the Act on National and Ethnic Minorities and the Regional Language was passed in Poland and Kashubian gained the status of a regional language within Poland but Kashubs were not recognized as a distinct group. Following the 2011 Census, the Association of People of Kashubian Nationality, Kaszëbskô Jednota, was created. The Association considers Kashubs to be a nation and is striving to change the Kashub status to that of an ethnic minority. The Kashubian–Pomeranian Association which until now was the only institutional representative of Kashubs does not recognize the Kaszëbskô Jednota aspirations and they consider that Kashubs have a double Polish and Kashubian identity. Both organizations are trying to convince as many people as possible to support their arguments. Meanwhile in Kashubia there are numerous cultural and political movements which influence the Kashubian identity. This article is an analysis of the Kashubian national discourse based on socio-scientific texts and Kaszëbskô Jednota information documents, media sources and interviews with young Kashubs engaged in the movement. This analysis confirms that the Kashubian identity is changing and the discussions underline different perceptions of the role which Kashubs should have in Poland.
