Opis:
In the Kolbuszowa Plateau forest areas, aggregations of brambles were observed most often in young forest plantations and forest clear cuts. In the 20 plantations that we examined, 11 bramble species were found. The most common bramble species in young forest plantations were Rubus plicatus, R. nessensis, R. hirtus, R. idaeus and more rarely R. gracilis, R. ambrosius and R. apricus. The largest bramble aggregations occurred in plantations located in mixed pine-oak forests, subcontinental lime-oakhornbeam forests and drained black alder forests. In young forest plantations the Rubus species were accompanied by species characteristic for the Vaccinio-Piceetea, Querco-Fagetea, Epilobietea angustifolii, Molinio-Arrhenatheretea and Nardo-Callunetea associations. There are three groups of bramble species which occur in young forest plantations: I – species with thin, prostrate and rooting stems (R. hirtus, R. apricus, R. pedemontanus), the negative impact of which on tree seedlings could have been very significant if the bramble specimens or diaspores had been present at the moment of tree planting; II – species with strong, poorly branched and arched stems (R. plicatus, R. gracilis, R. ambrosius, R. glivicensis), which negative influence on tree seedlings depends on the capability of the species to produce a big, dense bush in a short period of time thereby increasing shade; III – species with erect and relatively sparsely growing stems (R. idaeus), which are not a threat for the young forest plantations. Species with intermediate features (e.g. R. nessensis) may have a negative impact on young plantations generating a large, dense aggregation, however in most cases their populations only grow sparsely and do not hinder the growth of tree seedlings.

Opis:
In the springtime of 2005, 16 blackberry cultivars were planted in the Experimental Pomological Orchard in Skierniewice. They included the new blackberry cultivars: ‘Black Butte’, ‘Boysenberry’, ‘Chester’, ‘Helen’, ‘Karaka Black’, ‘Kotata’, ‘Loganberry’, ‘Loch Ness’, ‘Loch Tay’, ‘Oregon’, ‘Silvan’, ‘Tayberry’, Tayberry Buckingham’ and ‘Tummel’. The new cultivars were compared with two standard blackberry varieties ‘Orkan’ and ‘Black Satin’. In the course of the experiment the varieties were tested in the climatic conditions of central Poland, with special attention paid to yield and fruit quality. All the varieties except ‘Tayberry Buckingham’ were found very promising; the plants, however, have to be protected from frosts typical during Polish winters. The highest yields were recorded for ‘Chester’, ‘Loch Ness’ and ‘Loch Tay’. The largest fruits were produced by ‘Black Butte’. Although the Rubus hybrids: ‘Boysenberry’, ‘Loganberry’, ‘Tayberry’ and ‘Tummel’ are marked by low yields, they are interesting due to their original taste and fruit colour.

Opis:
The studies were conducted in the Gorce National Park (49°32'N, 20°07'E). The fieldwork was carried out on 34 permanent research plots. It was demonstrated in the studies that stands had significant positive and negative effects on the Rubus hirtus population. With the increase in the total and mean basal areas, the number and length of shoots, percentage of area coverage and annual length increment of Rubus hirtus individuals also increased. There was also a significant dependence of the number of shoots and individuals of Rubus hirtus on the basal area of beech. No significant relationship was found between Rubus hirtus plants and basal areas of spruce and fir trees. Stand age was another important factor. A positive correlation was found between the stand age and length of shoots and the percentage of area covered by blackberries. The number of trees on sample plots is also associated with age. A negative correlation was found between the parameters of Rubus hirtus plants (the number and length of shoots per 5 m2 and the degree of coverage) and the number of trees on sample plots. As there was previously no significant break in the canopy of the natural forest growing in the 'Dolina Łopusznej' reserve, no significant dominance of Rubus hirtus in the forest floor was noted. Blackberries usually established short main shoots (up to 25 cm) which were not potentially capable of producing roots, and thereby progeny ramets. As a result, the area occupied by blackberries usually did not exceed 15−30%.

Opis:
The objective of the paper was to determine the size structure of the canes and individuals of Rubus hirtus populations and compare them with regard to the type of soils developed on different geological substrates (granodiorite partially covered by boulders, weathered rocks, river sediments, loams and rock rubble for podzolic soil; limestone and conglomerate interlayers for humus−rich and brown rendzinas and on Carpathian flysh for acid brown soil). The mean Rubus hirtus density on all study sites significantly differed from each other. The highest ramet density (11 individuals/m2 ) was noted on the "Dolina Łopusznej" site, while individuals from the populations on the remaining study sites occurred locally in smaller or larger clusters. The shoots of Rubus hirtus growing on podzolic soils significantly differed from those growing on acid brown soil. Long shoots (over 50 cm) on all sites constituted only a few per cent. The Rubus hirtus populations on the "Szczoty" and "Dolina Łopusznej" sites established over 50 cm high shoots, potentially capable of producing roots with the probability of 0.14. Individuals producing a single the main primocane with the probability of over 0.7 were the most frequent. Less than 10% of the individuals which in the previous year produced at least one main shoot failed to establish new main shoots at all. The number of flowering/ fruiting individuals did not exceed 20% on none of the study sites. The studied populations produced a few new ramets. The results obtained from the research permit suggesting that the underlying bedrock is the primary, while light is the secondary, factor affecting the presence of Rubus hirtus plants. This species colonises areas where the stand canopy is broken even to a slight degree.

Opis:
Blackberry (Rubus fruticosus L.) breeding has been carried out at the Experimental Fruit - Growing Station of the Research Institute of Pomology and Floriculture in Brzezna since 1979. Approximately 40 - 50 combinations of crosses are carried out annually; these produce in the region of 3000 - 4000 seedlings in total. The basic aim of the programme is to provide frost resistant cultivars with high - quality fruits, for dessert or processing use. The aim of this experiment was to evaluate the following cultivars: ‘Gazda’, ‘Orkan’, three new thornless cultivars: ‘Gaj’, ‘Polar’, ‘Ruczaj’, and three other blackberry clones: 97472, 97524, 97563. In 2008 the largest yield was obtained from ‘Orkan’ (4.0 kg/plant) , but in 2009 and 2010, much of the yield was lost due to winter frosts. On 6 January 2009 and 20 December 2009, temperatures of about - 20 °C were recorded. In addition, from 23 to 27 January 2010 there were lows of - 22 and - 20 °C, and from 7 to 10 March 2010, the temperature was - 15 °C. The highest yield was obtained from clone 97524 (3.4 kg/plant), but it had a too sour taste. A significantly high yield was obtained from clone 97563 (2.8 kg/plant). Amongst the three new varieties, the highest yield was obtained from ‘Polar’ (1.9 kg/plant), slightly less from ‘Gaj’ (1.6 kg/plant) and then ‘Ruczaj’ (1.4 kg/plant). The lowest yield was produced by clone 97472 (0.8 kg/plant). The highest percentage of marketable fruit during 2008 - 2010 was obtained from the cultivars 'Gazda', 'Ruczaj' as well as the breeding clones 97472 and 97563; the smallest percentage came from 'Gaj' and 97524. ‘Polar’ had the largest fruits (6.8 g) and ‘Gazda’ the smallest (2.2 g). ‘Gaj’ and ‘Ruczaj’ had an average fruit weight of 5.5 g and 4.3 g, respectively. All the varieties and breeding clones, with the exception of ‘Orkan’, were characterised by good resistance of their flower buds to frost damage. The highest number of young shoots was produced by ‘Polar’. ‘Gazda’ had the highest number of root suckers.
