Opis:
The International Hydrographic Organization’s (IHO) [1] Transfer Standard for Digital Hydrographic Data S-57 [2] standard has been in force for more than a decade, and has successfully been used for official ENCs adopted by Hydrographic Offices around the world and by navigation equipment manufacturers. Additionally S-57 has been used for many additional purposes. However S-57, and especially the administration of the standard, has also experienced limitations. In 2010, IHO released the next generation hydrographic standard called S-100 Universal Hydrographic Data Model [3]. A move that will open up the door to new possibilities to existing S-57 users and potentially broaden the use of IHO standards in the hydrographic community. This paper will try to explain why an S-57 replacement was needed and give examples on some possibilities with S-100 and its derived product specifications such as S-101.

Artykuł jest zbiorem wniosków wynikających z doświadczeń zebranych w ramach projektu „Opracowanie Mapy Podziału Hydrograficznego Polski w skali 1:10 000” (MPHP10). Po raz pierwszy do aktualizacji MPHP wykorzystano dostępne dane przestrzenne zgromadzone w CODGiK takie jak: NMT, BDOT (Baza Danych Obiektów Topograficznych), ortofotomapa i mapa topograficzna w skali 1:10 000. Wykorzystanie zasobów Państwowych na cele opracowania mapy hydrograficznej wymagało przygotowania danych wejściowych. W niniejszym artykule omówione zostały prace przygotowawcze z zakresu adaptacji atrybutowej i geometrycznej danych BDOT. Opisane modyfikacje nadają danym kartograficznym cechy typowe dla danych hydrograficznych. Wnioski końcowe mają charakter zaleceń, które mogłyby stanowić uzupełnienie Wytycznych Technicznych do wykonania Bazy Danych Topograficznych (TBD) w zakresie pozyskiwania klas związanych z wodą.
This paper is a result of a series of experiments within the project “Development of the Hydrographic Map of Poland at 1:10 000 scale”. For the first time, available spatial data from the resources of CODGiK were used for updating the Hydrographic Map of Poland such as Digital Elevation Model (NMT), Topographic Objects Database, orthophotomap and topographic map at 1:10 000 scale. To use the national resources for development of hydrographic map the input data had to be prepared. This paper describes attribute and geometric adaptation of data from the Topographic Objects Database. Described modifications give cartographic data typical features of hydrographic data. Recommendations in the conclusion may be also considered as complement to the technical guidelines for production works of Topographic Objects Database.

The results of the accuracy measurements of phase differencing bathymetric sonar (PDBS) system in shallow waters are presented in the article. The measurement results were compared with the theoretical calculations for sonar system accuracy and international standards for hydrographic surveys. The proposed formulas enable to assess a priori sonar system performance using system quality factor (SQF), which takes into account influence of variable environmental conditions and auxiliary sensors on depth accuracy in a real-life scenario. The proposed SQF can be used in survey planning process to predict the swath width.

Opis:
The Słupsk Bank, formerly knows as the Stolpe Bank (after the former German name Stolp of the now Polish city of Slupsk) is a bank situated 16 miles northward of Ustka, is about 24 miles long east and west and 10 miles broad. It has on the greater partof it general depths of 10 to 18 m, sand; the shoalest part is the northwestern, where there are several patches with from 8 to 9 m water, and at the western end, where there is a depth of 10 m. On the southeastern edge of the bank the water deepens suddenly to 29 and 33 m and on the other edges gradually. Because of long distance to the coast and large area, hydrographic surveys are carried out by large hydrographic vessels in 24H system. Results of hydrographic surveys of the part of Slupsk Bank have been presented.

Opis:
One unintended consequence of nitrogen use in agriculture is an increase in nitrate content in ground waters. Nitrogen content was evaluated in soil samples from specific hydrographic regions of Poland from the 60-90 cm soil layer, in which this nutrient is not readily available to the main root mass of crop plants and may negatively affect the environment. It was revealed that Nmin content in specific hydrographic regions was highly dependent on both the soil type and land use. Notably higher values of Nmin content were observed for organic soils. The highest N contents were found in the grasslands of the northwestern area of Poland, while they were slightly lower in several regions of the main Odra River catchment and west of the Vistula River. The area with a high Nmin content in soils under maize was significantly larger compared to the grasslands area and primarily included the hydrographic regions of the Odra River basin in its south-western stretch, and of the Vistula River on its western and south-eastern side. With regard to the arable land under mixed cereals, the soils with the highest Nmin content in the non-root layer were predominantly located in hydrographic regions belonging to the main Odra catchment and to the catchment of the Vistula River in its upper course.

Faculty of Geodesy, University of Zagreb, recently acquired the latest technology for performing the precise hydrographic surveying. The equipment consists of ATLAS DESO 14 surveying echosounder with two transducers: one with high frequency (210 kHz) and second with low frequency (33 kHz). The position of the transducer is determined with Real Time Kinematics GPS pair of Trimble R8 receivers. Thus, it is possible to use single-frequency DESO 14 for two-frequencies bathymetry through repeating the course of the vessel on exactly the same points with both transducers. The results of the application of this method in measuring two lakes in the National Park Plitvice Lakes are shown in this paper.

Opis:
In the close vicinity of the Westerplatte peninsula lies a unique fortification monument - the Wisłoujscie Fortress. The name Wisłoujście (the mouth of the Vistula) dates back to the time when the Vistula had its estuary north of the Wisłoujście Fortress. The site was an area of strategic importance as it gave control of ships moving into and out of Gdańsk. The Fortress is surrounded by shallow water. Hydrographic surveys are important because of navigation safety of small ships and yachts and they are difficult because of limited maneuverability of sounding vessel and limitations in positioning. Results of hydrographic surveys of Wisłoujście Fortress have been presented.

Opis:
The main goal of the research was to determine the impact of construction, functioning and liquidation of water mills on the hydrographic network of Wadowice and its surroundings. Another indirect purpose was to reconstruct the medieval river network from the period prior to the heyday of milling and indicate the remaining traces of the milling infrastructure. The research was conducted on the basis of analysis of historical sources and archival topographic maps. The origins of development of milling in Wadowice were dependent on the royal privileges. The first of them was issued in the 15th century. The mills in Wadowice were located on rivers Choczenka, Kleczanka and Dąbrówka, as well as on three artificial mill races, but never on river Skawa. The longest mill race began in Świnna Poręba, where it was supplied with water from Skawa. At the foot of Iłowiec, the mill race was supplied from Nawieśnica and Potok Zbywaczowski, whose course was modified. After merging with Dąbrówka, the mill race ran further parallel to Skawa and ultimately flowed to Choczenka. There were between 3 and 5 mills throughout the entire course of the artificial crosscut. Between 1 and 3 mills were situated at the watercourse which supplies the ponds in Wadowice and Tomice. The third mill race, which began in Kleczanka, powered 1 mill and flowed into Skawa after merging with Rokowski Potok. Due to the environmental conditions, the mills in Wadowice did not require construction of ponds. The mills in Wadowice were located on the basis of economic conditions. The natural conditions were not favourable for the functioning of hydraulic machines, which forced the construction and maintenance of artificial riverbeds. Water milling was subsequently liquidated due to the development of steam mills, and ultimately electric mills. In consequence of the decline of water mills, the maintenance works on mill races were abandoned. Some of the watercourses were backfilled, others were transformed into drainage ditches, whereas the mills in the town were included in the sewerage system. The shape of the former river network of Wadowice is now only reflected by few fragments of certain creeks.

Opis:
Hydrographic data from the North Aegean Sea were used to examine the summer variability of surface water masses during the period 1998–2001. Attention was placed on the surface hydrographic features of the area, such as the Black Sea Water (BSW) plume expansion, the frontal characteristics of the BSW with the Levantine Intermediate Water (LIW) and the variability of submesoscale hydrographic features (such as the Samothraki Anticyclone). Strong southerly wind stresses were found responsible for relaxing the horizontal density gradients across the BSW-LIW frontal zone and displacing this front to the north of Lemnos Island, thus suppressing the Samothraki Anticyclone towards the Thracian Sea continental shelf. Under northerly winds, the BSW-LIWfront returns to its regular position (south of Lemnos Island), thus allowing the horizontal expansion of the Samothraki gyre up to the Athos Peninsula. Present results indicate the importance of medium-term wind stress effects on the generation of Samothraki Anticyclone suppression/expansion events.

Opis:
Onomastic data entitle to believe that Old Polish inherited from Common Slavic two variants of a term for ‘(small) stream’, namely, *ręczaj < *rǫčajь and *ruczaj < *ručajь. Both seem attested only by proper names (15th–20th centuries), the former primarily by four toponyms in southern Mazovia (Ręczaje 3x and Zręczaje), while the latter left traces in the toponymy of Central Poland and of the southern part of Greater Poland. None of them has been confirmed lexically in the „native” Polish dialects of the 20th century. Starting from the 17th century, texts of some authors rooted in the North‑Eastern periphery of Middle Polish (Lithuania, Byelorussia) attest a term ruczåj -aju ‘stream’, which is to be regarded as a loan from Old Byelorussian. One is inclined to connect its subsequent penetration, as a poetical word, into the literary Polish (the late 19th century) with its multiple occurrences in key instances of poetry by Adam Mickiewicz, the most outstanding writer of the Polish Romanticism, whose roots lay precisely in the Byelorussian ethnic territory. In the historical Slavic languages we find reflexes of the related variants *rǫčajь, *ručajь, *ručьjь (and *rǫčьjь?) and probably *(ne)rǫčь (~ *(ne)ručь?), the latter presumably constituting a starting point for the former four. A reliable reconstruction of the primary form together with its true etymological cognates seems, however, very difficult, if not impossible at all.

Depth measurement, as an element of hydrographic surveys, is realised in local reference system connected with a hydrographic vessel. Taking echosounder transducer's draught into consideration enables determination of the distance between water surface and the bottom. Sea level is changeable, especially in tide areas, even during hydrographic surveys. This fact created the necessity to work out many vertical reference systems. In tideless areas MSL - Mean Sea Level is generally used. Alternative for many vertical reference systems can be determination of the depth on reference ellipsoid using geopotential model of the Earth. This solution enable use of positioning systems for depth measurements and reduction of heaving.

The paper concerns the transformation of water resources induced by the construction and functioning of the Brest Fortress defence structure and presents the current water resources resulting from these changes. The study was conducted by analysing historical materials: maps, plans and written documents. Hydrographic changes were analysed for five study periods covering almost 200 years, from 1823, presenting the hydrographic network before the construction of fortifications, up to 2018, when most of these structures ceased or were repurposed. Hydrographic changes were analysed in detail for the area of the Terespol Fortification. The analysis revealed that almost 80% of the wetland area had disappeared after intensive drainage works, and several dozen originally small and isolated areas had been incorporated into a vast drainage network. One of the consequences of these activities was the creation of significantly transformed artificial catchments within the study area.
