Opis:
The paper presents a new concept of applying a rotary vane engine working as the hybrid system including both a combustion engine and a pneumatic motor, which were working simultaneously. In the beginning, review on both unconventional piston engine designs and similar like solutions on rotary vane engines were conducted. Next, description of the conceptual engine was presented. The concept was realized in practice. The prototype engine was built and it was preliminary investigated focusing on problems with cold start and misfiring events which occurred. The engine was tested on LPG and gasoline, however, its main target is to feed it with natural gas. This approach is justified as far as the engine finally might work in natural gas reduction stations and would provide electricity of 1kW power for station’s own demands.

Opis:
Nitrous oxide is often used in the space industry, as an oxidiser or monopropellant, mostly in self-pressurised configurations. It has potential for growth in use due to the recent rising interest in green propellants. At the same time, modelling the behaviour of a self-pressurising nitrous oxide tank is a challenging task, and few accurate numerical models are currently available. Two-phase flow, heat transfer and rapid changes of mass and temperature in the investigated system all increase the difficulty of accurately predicting this process. To get a get better understanding of the emptying of a self-pressurised nitrous oxide tank, two models were developed: a phase equilibrium model (single node equilibrium), treating the control volume as a single node in equilibrium state, and a phase interface model, featuring a moving interface between parts of the investigated medium. The single node equilibrium model is a variation of equilibrium model previously described in the literature, while the phase interface model involves a novel approach. The results show that the models are able to capture general trends in the main parameters, such as pressure or temperature. The phase interface model predicts nitrous oxide as a liquid, a two-phase mixture, and vapour in the lower part of the tank, which is reflected in the dynamics of changes in pressure and mass flow rate. The models developed for self-pressurisation, while created for predicting nitrous oxide behaviour, could be adapted for other media in conditions near vapour– liquid equilibrium by adding appropriate state equations.

Opis:
The aim of the work is the research on self-ignition phenomena in a hybrid rocket engine. The engine uses 98% hydrogen peroxide as oxidizer and HTPB (Hydroxyl-Terminated Poly-Butadiene) as fuel. The condition, that is essential to initiate self-ignition in this system, is the application of a catalytic reactor, which enables the decomposition process of liquid hydrogen peroxide into the mixture of steam and oxygen with the temperature 800-950 deg C. The research has been based on the use of different catalyst materials as well as various configurations of catalyst beds. During the research (hot tests) the following parameters are collected: pressure and temperature at the end of the catalyst bed and the thrust of the engine. The evaluation of the ignition delay (that is counted from the start of the HTP flow) is made on the basis of the chamber pressure as well as on the video recording of the fire test.

W ramach bieżącego projektu został wykonany i zbadany demonstrator technologii rakietowego silnika hybrydowego o ciągu 100÷140 N. Stałym paliwem, wykonywanym w Laboratorium Materiałów Pędnych (formowanym i kondycjonowanym), jest HTPB – polibutadien, zakończony grupami hydroksylowymi. Utleniaczem jest nadtlenek wodoru, zatężany do 98% i oczyszczany również na miejscu, tak aby spełniał wymogi klasy HTP. Katalizator rozkładu nadtlenku wodoru zamienia ciekły materiał pędny w mieszaninę gorących (o temperaturze, dochodzącej do 930°C) gazów: pary wodnej i tlenu.
The Project, presented in the paper, is a part of the Hybrid Rocket Engine Development Program, which has been initiated in the Institute of Aviation in 2012. A small 100÷140 N hybrid engine technology demonstrator has been built and tested. The solid fuel, used for the engine, is HTPB – Hydroxyl-terminated Polybutadiene. It was casted and cured in the Propellant Laboratory. The oxidizer was 98% hydrogen peroxide HTP-class, prepared in-house. A catalyst changes liquid HTP into hot gas (up to 950°C) mixture of oxygen and steam. The catalyst bed replaces any ignition device. Hot HTP decomposition products, containing 47% of oxygen – by mass – makes the engine self-ignitable. The paper contains results of the investigation: engine thrust and the catalyst bed aft end pressure. On the basis of these results as well as video recordings, the ignition delay is estimated.

Opis:
Engines powered by compressed air as a source of propulsion are known for many years. Nevertheless, this type of drive is not commonly used. The main reason for not using commonly is the problem with the low energy density of the compressed air. They offer a number of advantages, primarily focusing on the possibility of significantly lowering the emissions of the engine. Their emissivity mainly depends on the method of obtaining compressed air. This also has an impact on the economic aspects of the drive. Currently there are only a few, ready to implement, compressed air powered engine solutions available on the market. A major advantage is the ability to convert internal combustion engines to run with compressed air. The study provides a literature review of solutions, focusing on a multifaceted analysis of pneumatic drives. Increasing vehicle approval requirements relating to their emissions performance are encouraging for the search of alternative power sources. This creates an opportunity for the development of unpopular propulsion systems, including pneumatic engines. Analysing the works of some researchers, it is possible to notice a significant increase in the efficiency of the drive, which may contribute to its popularisation.

Opis:
The rising greenhouse gas emissions at a global level have caused the increasing interest in cleaner and less oildependent transportation sources. It has been carried out a lot of researches on the alternative energy sources, like biofuels, fuel cells, wind farms, etc. and on the clean vehicles (hybrids). Most major manufacturers have successfully introduced hybrid automobiles utilizing electric motors and an internal combustion engine to improve their gas mileage. To decrease the use of gasoline even further, some hybrids are being retrofitted to allow them to be pluggedinto a standard i.e. 120-volt socket to charge the batteries and potentially to provide power back to the electric grid when needed. Plug-in Hybrid Cars offer the fuel-efficiency benefits of hybrid cars with the added feature of being able to plug-in to household electricity during rest. This allows the increased mileage and fuel savings. Plug-ins requires larger batteries than normal hybrids, which drives up their cost. Lithium-ion batteries are smaller, have a higher output of energy but are more expensive than rechargeable nickel metal hydride (NiMh), still used in hybrid vehicles. Improvement in battery storage capacity is of the most importance for the plug-ins. Plug-in technology is developed by the major auto manufacturers, with working prototypes of both plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV) and plug-in electric vehicles possessing small backup gas generators. The aim of the paper has been to assess the dynamic performance characteristics of the assembly light trailer - car with classic combustion engine (in the first case) or PHEV (in the second case), using mathematical models and numerical simulations of standard driving cycles and to investigate algorithms for charging the stock battery pack.

Opis:
Comparative analysis of harmful compounds emission of classical and distributed propulsions applied on the AOS motor glider, taking into account the perspective of the development of hybrid propulsions. A novel path is indicated by so-called distributed aircraft propulsion. The advantages and disadvantages of this type of solutions are presented, as well as the conceptual design of the distributed propulsion for the AOS 71 motor glider. In the paper there were compared the emissions of harmful compounds generated by a hybrid power unit developed for the airframe of AOS 71 motor glider - traditional propulsion, so-called focused (one-propeller) and dispersed propulsion (multi-propelled). Functional diagrams of both types of propulsions solutions are presented. Construction and aerodynamic constraints of both propulsions are discussed and comparative analysis is made. In the traditional version of the propulsion (so-called focused propulsion). the propeller is driven by an Emrax 228 electric engine with effective parameters: N = 55 kW, M = 120 Nm. The power source is a battery set with a capacity of 16 Ah and a range extender powered by a LCR 407ti rotating piston engine with maximum power of 28 kW. In the variant of the distributed propulsion. Ten electric engines of AXI 8120 type were used to drive small propellers arranged along the wingspan. The power source in this variant is analogous to the variant with the Emrax electric engine. For the adopted variant of the flight mission of the motor glider. a flight trajectory model was developed, which was used to determine the load of the power unit. In laboratory conditions. emission tests of both propulsions were conducted. The results are summarized in charts and discussed in the conclusions.

Opis:
Comparative analysis of combustion and hybrid propulsion unit in aviation application in terms of emission of harmful compounds in the exhausts emitted to the atmosphere. For the propulsion of the AOS 71 motor glider, two types of propulsion were planned as development versions. The first analysed propulsion is based on a combustion engine, but of the Wankel type (LCR 814 engine with the power of 55 kW). The second designed propulsion is an hybrid based on a LCR 407 combustion engine with a power of 28 kW, which is connected in series with an electric generator propelling the engine (Emrax 228 engine), total power of the propulsion is 55 kW. The comparison of emissions of harmful compounds emitted to the atmosphere generated by the combustion and hybrid power unit intended for assembly in the AOS 71 motor glider, assuming various loads and methods of hybrid propulsion control, was made. The tests were conducted in laboratory conditions. Several different programs were designed to simulate different energy management methods in a hybrid system, depending on the predicted mission and load of the motor glider. On the basis of laboratory tests, exhaust emission was determined from both propulsions as a function of rotational speed and load. Then, based on the assumed flight trajectory and collected test data, the emission for both propulsions variants was determined. The values of emission parameters were compared and the results were presented in diagrams and discussed in the conclusions.

Opis:
This paper discusses results of research carried out under real operating conditions, which used to develop new drive test reflecting urban operating conditions. The measurements were performed for the bus with serial hybrid powertrain on the streets of Poznan agglomeration. Data on the working conditions of the vehicle in traffic were analyzed statistically. Based on the of the collected data, the guidelines for driving test intended to evaluate fuel consumption in the urban cycle for buses equipped with alternative powertrains. Average values of acceleration and velocity were assumed cycle in the confidence levels developed for the real operating conditions. The paper presents the structure of the test , including the movement parameters depending on the time interval. In addition, the paper discusses the guidelines for the implementation of the test.
