Opis:
The subject of research in the present study was biodegradation of butyl acrylate. Tests of microbiological degradation of this compound by selected environmental and laboratory strains were conducted. The Pseudomonas fluorescens PCM 2123 strain utilized the growth substrate most intensively and was selected for further research. Optimal growth conditions and toxic dose of the utilized substrate were determined for the selected strain. The research into kinetics of butyl acrylate biodegradation by Pseudomonas fluorescens PCM 2123 bacteria included a series of experiments conducted for different initial concentrations of acrylate in a batch reactor. The influence of initial substrate concentration on the specific growth rate was described by Haldan's equation. Constants of the equation were estimated on the basis of experimental data.
Szczep EC3_2001 był wyizolowany z próbek gleby, pobranych w Oświęcimiu z terenu firmy chemicznej Synthos S.A., szczep Pseudomonas fluorescens PCM 2123 pochodził z Polskiej Kolekcji Mikroorganizmów (Wrocław), natomiast szczepy Pseudomonas putida mt-2 i szczep E-93486 zakupiono w Finlandii z Kolekcji VTT. Badania prowadzono w kolbach, zawierających 300 cm3 roztworu soli mineralnych i zaadaptowany do biodegradacji akrylanu butylu szczep bakterii. Do kolb co 24 godziny dodawano określone dawki substratu. Kolby były termostatowane (30oC) i mieszane (130 rpm). Szczep Pseudomonas fluorescens PCM 2123 najefektywniej degradował akrylan butylu, zatem dla tego szczepu wyznaczono kinetykę biodegradacji. Badania kinetyczne prowadzono w bioreaktorze Biostat B firmy Sartorius, w stałych i optymalnych dla wybranych bakterii warunkach (temperatura, pH, natlenienie, skład pożywki). Podczas pojedynczego eksperymentu wyznaczano krzywe wzrostu mikroorganizmów oraz konsumpcji substratu. Zgromadzona baza danych eksperymentalnych umożliwiła wybór postaci równania kinetycznego (model Haldana) oraz estymację parametrów tego równania.

Opis:
Nanoparticles are very fascinating area of science not only due to their unique properties but also possibility of producing new more complex materials, which may find an application in modern chemistry, engineering and medicine. In process of nanoparticles formation very important aspect is a rate of individual stage i.e. reduction, nucleation and autocatalytic growth, because this knowledge allows for proper materials design, morphology manipulation, stability. The last one aspect can be realized using proper electrostatic, steric and electrosteric stabilization. However until now nobody reports and measures kinetic rates of all stages during process of particles formation in the presence of steric stabilizers. Thus, the main contribution of this paper is determination of individual rate constants for nanoparticles formation in the presence of steric stabilizers and their comparison to the system without stabilizer. For this purpose, an aqueous solution of Au(III) and Pt(IV) ions were mixed with steric stabilizers like PVA and PVP, and reduced using L-ascorbic acid as a mild and sodium borohydride as a strong reductant. As a results stable nanoparticles were formed and process of their formation was registered spectrophotometrically. From obtained kinetic curves the values of observed rate constants for reduction metal ions, slow nucleation and fast autocatalytic growth were determined using Watzky-Finke model. It was found that the addition of polymer affects the rate of the individual stages. The addition of steric stabilizers to gold ions reduced with L-ascorbic acid causes that the process of nucleation and autocatalytic growth slows down and the value of observed rate constants for nucleation changes from 3.79·10-3 (without polymer) to 7.15·10-5 s-1 (with PVA) and for growth changes from 1.15·103 (without polymer) to 0.48·102 s-1 M-1 (with PVA). However, the rate of the reduction reaction of Au(III) ions is practically unchanged. In case of using strong reductant the addition of polymer effects on the shape of kinetic curve for reduction of Au(III) and it suggests that mechanism is changed. In case of Pt(IV) ions reduction with L-ascorbic acid, the process speeds up a little when PVA was added. Determined values of observed rate constants for nucleation and growth platinum nanoparticles decrease twice comparing to the system without polymer. The reduction of Pt(IV) ions with sodium borohydride accelerates when PVP was added and slows down when PVA was used. Moreover, the size of obtained colloidal gold and platinum was also analysed using DLS method. Obtained results (rate constants) may be useful in the process of nanomaterials synthesis, in particular in microflow.

Reduction of three industrial nickel oxides (Goro, Tokyo and Sinter 75) with a hydrogen bearing gas was revisited in the temperature interval from 523 to 673 K (250 to 400°C). A pronounced incubation period is observed in the temperature interval tested. This period decreases as the reduction temperature increases. Thermogravimetric data of these oxides were fitted using the Avrami-Erofeyev kinetic model. The reduction of these oxides is controlled by a nucleation and growth mechanism of metallic nickel over the oxides structure. Rate kinetic constants were re-evaluated and the activation energy for the reduction of these oxides was re-calculated.

Opis:
Palm oil clinker media (POCM), which is a by-product of incineration process from palm oil industry, creates environmental sustainability issues. This is due to the method of handling solid waste material of industry by simply dumping it on an open land area. The previous study of POCM including physical and mechanical properties of solid present showed promising results of utilizing POCM as a packing media for treatment of domestic wastewater industry. The packing media can be used in the process of biological wastewater treatment system in Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR) mode. By adopting POCM as an attached growth media, this research paper focuses on the performance of POCM in SBR mode in the context of organic and nutrient removal rate. The performance pertaining to the removal of organics and nutrient was measured using USEPA Standard Method for Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) and Ammonia. The average rate of removal for COD and Ammonia per biomass adopting POCM in sequencing batch reactor mode is 0.0069 mg COD/mg MLVSS and 0.001 mg Ammonia/mg MLVSS.

Opis:
In this paper we show spatial carbon isotope variations in black pine (Pinus nigra Arnold) needles, collected in spring 2001 and autumn 2003, from trees at the coast of south-western Croatia island (Žirje) and southern Spain (Benalmadena near Malaga), respectively. Needles were segmented perpendicularly to the longer axis (base, middle and top) and each segment was analysed separately. d13C values in needles from Croatia varied between -26.65‰ to -24.43‰ (2 months old needles) and from -28.25‰ to -25.21‰ (1 year old needles), while d13C values in needles from Spain varied from -27.58‰ to -25.27‰. The difference between d13Cb (base) and d13Ct (top) in the same needle (D13Cb-t) varied from 1.85 to 2.05‰ (in young needles from Croatia), from 0,02 to 1,80‰ (young needles from Spain), and 1.16 to 2.32‰, (in old needles from Croatia). The average D13Cb-t values were 0.78‰ and 1.73‰ in Spain and Croatia, respectively. In each needle the base of the needle was always 13C-enriched as compared to the top of the same needle. This evidences that carbon isotopes are not retranslocated after its fixation into the leaf structure (after the growth process is over). Temperature variation was most probably negligible for the discovered intraneedle carbon isotope distribution. Although, the intraneedle carbon isotope inhomogeneity can be partly the result of seasonal variation in d13C of atmospheric CO2, most probably the remarkably high D13Cb-t values, and regular pattern, are predominantly resulting from isotopic and chemical composition of primary and secondary products contained in the growin part of needle and kinetic isotope fractionation during decomposition of storage materials at the base.
