Opis:
Recent research show that image−derived point clouds (IPC) can be successfully utilized in the context of estimation of selected forest parameters. However there are still some topics for further investigation in the context of using archival data. Particularly, in case of forest stands in Poland the number of such studies is limited. This study investigates the usefulness of airborne IPC for estimation of Lorey's height (H), basal area (G) and growing stock volume (V) of Scots pine stands. Additionally, the accuracy of predictive models is analyzed for images acquired in the same year as the field reference data were collected (2015) and for archival images acquired in 2012. The study was performed in Janów Lubelski Forest District (south−eastern Poland) on approximately 7,800 ha. The measurements from 94 circular plots were used as the reference data. The Area Based Approach and multiple linear regression were used to create predictive models. For each analyzed dependent variable variety of IPC characteristics were evaluated to select the most accurate predictive models. The best model for each variable was selected based on Akaike Information Criteria and RMSE. The same predictor variables were used for both years of aerial images aquisition. For models comparison the one−sided bootstrap test was used. The RMSPE for H, G and V in case of images acquired in 2015 amounted to 5.3, 16.3 and 17.3%, respectively. Analogically, the relationship between predicted and observed values (R2) amounted to 0.96, 0.47 and 0.81. The finally selected models had three, one and two predictors for H, G and V, respectively. The difference between accuracy of models based on aerial images from 2012 and 2015 was not statistically significant for all analyzed variables. The obtained results show high potential of using airborne image−derived point clouds for forest inventory activities in Scots pine dominated stands.

Opis:
The results of measurements of permanent control sample plots (skpp) were used to update the growing stock of individual stands in the State Forests IT System (SILP). The calculation was based on Bayesian estimation. Several update methods were used differing in the principles of estimating the initial growing stock. The growing stock update results for the whole forest and individual age classes were similar for all the applied methods. The volume of the estimated increment and the recorded cuts in SILP was lower compared to the measurement results in skpp. In addition to the periodical correction of the SILP data, the application of skpp would enable reduction in the intervals between the growing stock inventories (to 20−30 years) performed on the basis of a relatively large number of temporary sample plots.

Opis:
Management activities in uneven−aged forests are based on a prescribed yield subjectively set by an inspector according to silvicultural needs. The findings show that in uneven−aged selection stands prescribed yield was calculated at a lower level than in irregular shelterwood stands. Prescribed yield determined by silvicultural needs differ from actual yield, so it does not meet the actual silvicultural needs of uneven−aged stands and therefore should not be recommended for use in the forest management practice any more.

Opis:
The development of the transportation network brings both benefits and threats. Much attention is paid to soil contamination with trace elements, difficulties in animal migration, noise propagation or synanthropisation of the vegetation cover. This paper deals with the effect of provincial road No. 150 on inventory characteristics of neighboring Scots pine stands in the Notecka Forest (western Poland) – one of the larger forest complexes in Europe. Twelve rectangular experimental sites were established perpendicular to the road axis, called belt transects. Each transect consisted of 3−4 plots located at different distances from the pavement edge (fig.). Measurements and estimations were recorded for the plots. Values from all belt transects were approximated within plots at the same distance from the road and then compared using statistical methods. Observations were conducted in Scots pine stands growing on fresh coniferous forest (Bśw) and fresh mixed coniferous forest (BMśw) sites. Reduced stand density that resulted in decreased basal area, volume and growth rates were observed in the immediate vicinity of the road compared to the forest interior. Individual trees were thicker, but more often burdened with defects decreasing timber value. Any considerable effect of the road on tree height wasn't observed. The above mentioned changes were more evident in poorer habitat conditions, while the location in relation to the road had no significant effect. Modified lighting conditions are probably the main cause of these changes. At the edge of Scots pine stands in the Notecka Forest, a unique ecotone has formed under the influence of the provincial road.
