Opis:
This pa per pres ents the pre lim i nary re sults of ground pen e trat ing ra dar sound ing ap plied at the desert ar chae o log i cal site in Saqqara (Egypt). The sur vey was car ried out in 2012 within a pro ject re al ized by In sti tute of Ar chae ol ogy, Cardi nal Stefan Wyszyñski Uni ver sity in War saw and the Fac ulty of Ge ol ogy, Uni ver sity of War saw. One of the key aims of the re search was test ing the ap pli ca tion of ground pen e trat ing ra dar to non-in va sive sur veys of desert ar chae o log i calsites. Radargrams ob tained for area of so called the Dry Moat chan nel sur round ing the Step Pyr a mid com plex have shown the geo log i cal struc ture of its fill ing. It com prises among oth ers de bris-sand con glom er ate of diluval or i gin char ac ter ized by a sig nif i cant con tent of the clay frac tion and clay min er als. Such lithological con tent strongly at ten u -ate the prop a ga tion of EM waves, re strict ing the depth range of the GPR sur vey. The con ducted geo phys i cal prospection west to the Step Pyr a mid in Saqqara has con firmed the high ap pli ca bil ity of the GPR method in non-in va sive stud ies of vast ar chi tec tural struc tures, such as the mon u men tal ditch sur round ing the Step Pyr a mid known as the Dry Moat. It should sum ma rised that high hor i zon tal res o lu tion ob tained dur ing GPR survey is a re sult of lo cal geo log i cal struc ture of the searched area, i.e. strong lithological con trast of the sed i ments fill ing the Dry Moat, which, de pend ing on their min er al og i cal com po si tion.

Opis:
Geo phys i cal in ves ti ga tions in West Saqqara area were part of the ar chae o log i cal field work of the Pol ish-Egyp tian archae o log i cal mis sion dur ing the cam paign in 2012. The main pur pose of geo phys i cal prospection us ing the groundpene trat ing ra dar (GPR) was to de ter mine the lo ca tion of po ten tial un der ground se pul chral struc tures. Dur ing the GPR sur vey, op ti mal depth pen e tra tion was achieved due to dry rocks and mono lithic struc ture of the lime stone pla teau on which the an cient cem e tery was lo cated. Us ing an tenna of 100 MHz, the depth of pen e tra tion was up to 45 m and with an tenna of 250 MHz, up to 15 meters. Three main groups of archaeological structures were identified: sarcophagi and mum mies, burial shafts; mo bile ob jects (solid rock blocks as frag ments of tombs). One of the main goal of the GPR sur - vey was to track the route of the west ern part of the Dry Moat, ex pressed by a wide and shal low de pres sion spread ing to - wards north-south. The re sults of geo phys i cal in ves ti ga tions sug gest that Saqqara pla teau is an ideal site for us ing GPR survey ing technology.

Opis:
Pre lim i nary re sults of GPR field prospection car ried out in the area of the pre his toric min ing field Borownia (Æmielów, Ostrowiec OEwiêtokrzyski Dis trict) are pre sented. This min ing field forms a belt (30–50 m wide and 700 m long), start ing from the val ley edge of the Kamienna River southeastwards. South east ern and west ern parts of the site have pre served the orig i nal post-ex ploi ta tion re lief. Ge ol ogy of the Borownia min ing field was ex am ined and ac quired radio grams re vealed three dis tinct zones of anom aly con cen tra tions. The cen tral zone (B) is clearly a frag ment of the pre his toric min ing field, con firmed not only by the GPR sound ing but also by ar chae o log i cal sur veys. The other two zones have not yet been in ves ti gated in de tail but their sur face and ar chae o log i cal ex am i na tion may de ter mine only whether their un der ground struc tures are nat u ral or have been cre ated by hu mans. Data ob tained dur ing the GPR prospection at the Borownia ar chae o log i cal site con firmed use ful ness of 100, 250 and 500 MHz an ten nas. The rel atively large depth range and good res o lu tion are due to fa vor able geo log i cal con di tions.
