Opis:
Starting from the equation of state of the Clapeyron gas, it is shown that the temperature of a monatomic molecule of radius and mass moving with velocity is equal to , where: l are the length of a molecule without collisions, the Boltzmann constant, the kinetic energy of the molecule. The physical meaning of the temperature of a molecule should be understood as the kinetic energy that it has in the path without collisions l. The dimension of temperature coincides with the size of energy, but quantitatively the energy differs by the presence of a dimensionless factor , characterizing the motion of a molecule in fractions of its radius. Based on the temperatures of the individual molecules and their relative amounts contained in the gas, a formula is proposed for the overall gas temperature, for any, even nonequilibrium, distribution. The physical meaning of the gas temperature is determined by the product of the mean kinetic energy, the average mean free path of its molecules, and their size.

A formula is derived for the dependence of the thermal radiation energy of a gas molecule on its kinetic energy. From this formula it follows that the radiation energy of a molecule is not equal to its kinetic energy. Since the mean free path of molecules is larger in more rarefied gases, the energy of thermal radiation in such gases is, accordingly, greater. For the same reason, the smaller the size of the gas molecules, the volume of empty space in such a gas will be greater, and, consequently, the gas will be more discharged, so that the energy of emission of gas molecules in comparison with the kinetic energy of the molecule will be even greater.

Opis:
The infrared (IR) spectrometry technique is used to identify organic substances, polymers and, in some cases, inorganic materials. In line with the thesis that the era of fossil fuels is slowly coming to an end, there has been a need to search for and test alternative energy sources. Natural gas containing methane is an energy source that produces large amounts of greenhouse gases. Storing and producing energy from fuels such as biogas is one of the many innovative production approaches in closed, CO2-neutral circuits (biogas plants). Technologies for the production and use of biogas are eligible for funding supporting the development of renewable energy sources. Biogas is considered to be a renewable energy source, the carbon cycle in its raw material production and consumption is closed, with zero net carbon emissions. IR spectrometers operating both in the mid-infrared and near-infrared range provide the possibility of chemical and material analysis with high sensitivity and accuracy, therefore they can be widely used in environmental monitoring or to control technological processes. The article describes the analysis of biogas samples by Fourier transform infrared spectrometry with the use of a gas cuvette with adjustable optical path. The tested samples come from the processing of distiller's waste. The paper presents the analysis of standard gas samples, which are the main components of biogas, and compares the obtained IR spectra with the spectra for real biogas samples. An attempt was made to determine the applicability of this technique for the detection of contaminants such as the presence of ammonia gas. The conducted research confirmed the analytical possibilities of examining the main components of biogas. The content of biogas pollutants may turn out to be too low for their determination in the case of trace amounts, and in such a case the IR spectrometry may turn out to be insufficient, e.g. to assess the effectiveness of biogas purification processes, therefore it should be used in conjunction with the GC analysis.

Opis:
A detonation is the strongest form of all gas explosions. The ease with which a flammable mixture can be detonated (detonability) commonly and traditionally is classified by a detonation cell width λ and an ignition delay time behind the detonation leading shock τ. Additionally, two more parameters were proposed 3 years ago – χ and RSB, which inform about regularity of a detonation structure. The problem of a detonation is significant in industry, in particular in power engineering, where restricted emission standard impose to introduce hydrogen-rich fuels, such as syngas. The most possible initiation of a detonation in industrial conditions is deflagration to detonation transition (DDT), where a deflagration under some conditions (obstacles, confinement, etc.) accelerates and a transition to a detonation takes places. In industry, this acceleration of a flame may progress in initially smoke-filled space. The goal of this paper is to analyse influence of exhaust gas on detonation propensity of a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen. The analysis concerns the detonation cell width λ, ignition delay time τ, RSB and χ parameters. The composition of exhaust gas is calculated by setting it to a state of chemical equilibrium. Combustion temperature influence on exhaust gas composition is assessed. Species, which have the strongest influence on detonability, are assessed. Computations are performed with the use of Cantera tool.

Microfluidic systems are used in a wide range of applications, including medical diagnostics, cell engineering and bioanalytics. In this work we focused on “Lab-on-a-chip” microsystems for cell cultivation. A troublesome problem of gas bubbles entering microdevices causing signal interferences and cells damage was emphasized. A novel, integrated debubbler in the form of cylindrical traps covered with thin PDMS membrane was designed and manufactured. Demonstrated debubbler was successfully applied in a long-lasting culture of HT-29 cell aggregates.

Opis:
Addition of surfactants is one of the methods, which can improve biodegradation of hydrocarbons. In this study the effect of an alkyl polyglycoside, Lutensol GD 70, on biodegradation of diesel oil by soil bacteria was determined. Gravimetric method was used to evaluate the efficiency of biodegradation. The changes in the content of selected aliphatic fractions were also examined by gas chromatography. The results for “wild” strains and for those stored for 12 months in stress conditions on diesel oil were compared. Additionally, the influence of Lutensol GD 70 on cell surface hydrophobic properties of tested strains was examined with the method of microbial adhesion to hydrocarbons (MATH). The results show a beneficial effect of Lutensol GD 70 on diesel oil biodegradation by tested environmental strains. The increase in biodegradability was approx. 50% in one of the strains. Slightly decreased efficiency of biodegradation was observed in stressed strains. Addition of the surfactant markedly influenced the properties of cell surface by changing its hydrophobicity. The results indicate the significant potential of Lutensol GD 70 in supporting natural processes of biodegradation of petroleum by microorganisms.

Opis:
In 2018 during the 72nd session of the Maritime Environmental Protection Committee (MEPC) IMO adopted its initial strategy for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) from the ships to meet the Paris Agreement Goals, 2015. This is considered as a major milestone in formulizing a clear strategy by IMO towards its objective of reducing the global GHG emissions from the ships. The strategy had two primary objectives: the first was to decrease total annual GHG emissions by at least 50% by 2050 compared to 2008 levels. The second objective was to promote the phasing out of GHG emissions entirely. In 2020, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) conducted a study which revealed that greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from shipping had increased by 9.6%. The rise in global maritime trade was identified as the main factor behind this increase. IMO's 2020 study also concluded that reducing GHG emissions by focusing only on energy-saving technologies and ship speed reduction would not be enough to meet the IMO's 2050 GHG reduction target. Therefore, greater attention needs to be given to the use of low-carbon alternative fuels. To understand the effectiveness of currently available technologies in reducing GHG emissions from ships, a literature survey was conducted in this study. The survey examined a range of related articles published between 2018 and 2022. This study aimed to identify the current stage and the quantity of literature available on various technologies and, more importantly, serve as a decision-making support tool for selecting a technology under specific circumstances in a quantitative manner. The technologies were divided into four groups: those that utilize fossil fuels, those that use renewable energy, those that use fuel cells, and those that use low-carbon or alternative fuels. The literature survey was conducted using Web of Science (WoS) and Google Scholar. The results of this study will also help to identify clear research gaps in comparing the effectiveness of various available technologies to reduce GHG emissions. Ultimately, the aim is to develop a comprehensive strategy that can be used to reduce GHG emissions from shipping and contribute to the global fight against climate change.

Opis:
Fully synthetic, biochemically inert and water-immiscible liquid perfluorochemicals (PFCs) are recognised as flexible liquid carriers/scavengers of gaseous compounds (respiratory gases mainly, i.e. O2 and CO2) and increasingly applied in bioprocess engineering. A range of unmatched physicochemical properties of liquid PFCs, i.e. outstanding chemo- and thermostability, extremely low surface tension, simultaneous hydro- and lipophobicity, which result from carbon chain substitution with fluorine atoms (the most electronegative chemical element) and the presence of intramolecular C–F bonds (the strongest single bond known in organic chemistry) have been described in detail. Exceptional propensity to solubility of respiratory gases in liquid perfluorinated compounds has been widely discussed. Advantages and disadvantages of bioprocess applications of liquid PFCs in the form of a pure PFC as well as in an emulsified form have been pointed out. A liquid PFC-mediated mass transfer intensification in various types of microbial, plant cell and animal cell culture systems: from miniaturised microlitre-scale cultures, via biomaterial-based scaffolds containing culture systems, to litre-scale bioreactors, has been reviewed and elaborated on bearing in mind the benefits of bioprocesses.

The publication analyses the possibility of separating hydrogen from coke oven gas for further use in the transport sector in the FCEV segment (fuel cell electric vehicles). The construction of the separation installation using the PSA (pressure swing adsorption) method guaranteeing high purity of hydrogen was assumed, according to the requirements of ISO 14678-2:2012 and SAE J-2719 standards. The PSA technology is widely used in industrial gas separation processes, however, due to the composition of coal gas, which apart from hydrogen and methane consists of impurities in the form of hydrocarbons, sulphur compounds, chlorine, etc., it needs to be adapted to the needs of separation of hydrogen from coke oven gas. The study shows the total possible hydrogen production potential and then, in agreement with the JSW Group’s Coking Plants, limits were set for hydrogen production in PSA technology at Przyjaźń, Jadwiga and Radlin Coking Plants, without the negative impact of the separation installation on technological processes associated with coke oven battery firing, operation of existing power units, gas compression systems and taking into account securing the needs of external customers for coke oven gas. Additionally, in order to determine the Polish market demand for high-purity hydrogen, an analysis was carried out which indicates that in 2030 the share of FCEVs will be 2%, so the demand for hydrogen in this segment would be negligible compared to the supply of hydrogen produced in a large-scale installation. Due to the need to build such a market and adapt the parameters of the installation to the variable parameters of coke oven gas, the pilot scale of the installation and the target location of the installation at the Przyjaźń Coking Plant were indicated as the most optimal.

Opis:
A mathematical model of a hybrid culture system supported with a stationary layer of liquid perfluorochemical (PFC) as a source of O2 for cells which grow in the aqueous phase of culture medium has been developed and discussed. The two-substrate Monod kinetics without inhibition effects, i.e. the Tsao-Hanson equation, has been assumed to characterise the biomass growth. The Damköhler number which relates the growth rate to the mass transfer effects has been used to appraise the regime (i.e. diffusion-limited or kinetics) of the whole process. The proposed model predicted accurately previously published data on the submerged batch cultures of Nicotiana tabacum BY-2 heterotrophic cells performed in a culture system supported with a stationary layer of hydrophobic perfluorodecalin as a liquid O2 carrier. Estimated values of the parameters of the model showed that the process proceeded in the kinetics regime and the growth kinetics, not the effects of the mass transfer between aqueous phase and liquid PFC, had essential influence on the growth of biomass.

This study analysed the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles’(FCEVs’) life cycles. These included models running on hydrogen derived from coke oven gas (COG), which is a by-product of the coking process of coal and includes hydrogen, methane, and other gases. FCEVs and hydrogen have the potential to drive future mobility. Hydrogen can be separated from the COG in the process of pressure swing adsorption to obtain a purity of hydrogen that meets the requirements of a hydrogen FCEV. An environmental life cycle assessment (LCA) of FCEV powered by hydrogen produced from Polish COG was conducted. The direction of hydrogen production strategies in Poland was also presented. The analyses included the entire life cycle of FCEVs with the production of hydrogen from COG in a Polish coke plant. A comparative analysis of FCEVs and other alternative fuels was conducted, and the main determinants of GHG emissions of FCEV were given. Importantly, this is the first attempt at an environmental assessment of FCEVs in Poland.

Opis:
The content of alcohol insoluble solids (AIS), polysaccharide composition of cell walls and uronic acids content calculated as galacturonic acid in rose hips (Rosa villosa (Rosa pomifera Herrm) ‘Karpatia', Rosa canina L., Rosa rugosa Thunb.). Rose hips were extracted by means of pectin sequential extraction. Rose achenes contained more alcohol insoluble solids than flesh. The main saccharide building cell walls of rose fruit was glucose from cellulose. The achenes were rich in xylose and the flesh was rich in arabinose. The content of galacturonic acid in flesh was 2 to 3 times higher than in the case of achenes. The largest polysaccharide fraction both in whole fruit and achenes was Concentrated Alkali-Soluble Polysaccharides fraction, while in flesh it was Water Soluble Pectins fraction. Chelating Agent Soluble Pectins fraction was the smallest in the flesh, achenes and the whole hypanthium. Differences in the polysaccharide composition, the content of AIS and galacturonic acid were found, depending on the species of rose hips. In addition, differences in composition were found in the case of wild growing and controlled cultivation hips. Rose hips achenes contain more total dietary fiber than the flesh, but the flesh contains more pectin fraction (soluble dietary fiber) while the achenes contain more cellulose (insoluble dietary fiber).
