Opis:
Objectives: The main goals of this study were to assess the most significant morphological changes and acoustic measures for the ageing process of a professional opera singer’s voice. Design: This investigation included 58 healthy professional opera singers, who were compared with 42 young opera singers from the control group. Methods: All participants underwent a voice assessment protocol: ENT specialist examination and speech therapist evaluation. Acoustic parameters and subjective observations were obtained and analysed. R esults: Fundamental frequency (F0) level was distinctly decreased in the case of older female singers, but F0 in older male singers had stable levels in comparison to that in younger singers. Older singers were found not to have substantially different values of jitter than younger ones. Maximal phonation time (MPT) was longer in the older women’s group when compared to the younger singers, but not relatively different in the men’s group. Shimmer value presented no age-related change. Morphological changes seem to correlate with the age of subjects. C onclusions: The main characteristic of voice change with age was a decreased F0 level among older female professional singers and rather stable F0 levels in male singers. This study gives preliminary results on the ageing of voice in the population of professional opera singers.

The human voice is one of the basic means of communication, thanks to which one also can easily convey the emotional state. This paper presents experiments on emotion recognition in human speech based on the fundamental frequency. AGH Emotional Speech Corpus was used. This database consists of audio samples of seven emotions acted by 12 different speakers (6 female and 6 male). We explored phrases of all the emotions – all together and in various combinations. Fast Fourier Transformation and magnitude spectrum analysis were applied to extract the fundamental tone out of the speech audio samples. After extraction of several statistical features of the fundamental frequency, we studied if they carry information on the emotional state of the speaker applying different AI methods. Analysis of the outcome data was conducted with classifiers: K-Nearest Neighbours with local induction, Random Forest, Bagging, JRip, and Random Subspace Method from algorithms collection for data mining WEKA. The results prove that the fundamental frequency is a prospective choice for further experiments.

Opis:
This article focuses on the finite element analysis (FEA) of the nonlinear behavior of a layered functionally graded material (FGM) plate as concerns displacement, stresses, critical buckling load and fundamental frequency. The material properties of each layer in an FGM plate are assessed according to a ceramic based simple power law distribution and the rules of mixture. The finite element model of a layered FGM plate is developed using ANSYS®15.0 software. The developed finite element model is used to study the static and dynamic responses of an FGM plate. In this paper, the effects of power law distribution, thickness ratio, aspect ratio and boundary conditions are investigated for central displacement, transverse shear stress, transverse normal stress, critical buckling load and fundamental frequency, and the obtained FEA results are in sound agreement with the literature test data results. Since the FGM is used in a high temperature environment, the FE analysis is performed for the FGM plate under a thermal field and then correlated. Finally, the FGM plate is analyzed under a thermomechanical load by using the current FE concept.

Multipitch estimation, also known as multiple fundamental frequency (F0) estimation, is an important part of the Music Information Retrieval (MIR) field. Although there have been many different approaches proposed, none of them has ever exceeded the abilities of a trained musician. In this work, an iterative cancellation method is analysed, being applied to three different sound representations - salience spectrum obtained using Constant-Q Transform, cepstrum and enhanced autocorrelation result. Real-life recordings of different musical instruments are used as a database and the parameters of the solution are optimized using a simple yet effective metaheuristic approach - the Luus-Jaakola algorithm. The presented approach results in 85% efficiency on the test database.

Opis:
The first extensive investigation on the Lombard effect with Polish speech has been performed. Characteristic parameters of Lombard speech were measured: intensity, fundamental frequency, spectral tilt, duration of words, duration of pauses and duration of vowels. The effect was investigated in a task involving real communication – solving a Sudoku puzzle. The speakers produced speech in quiet and in three different backgrounds: competing speech, speech-shaped noise and speech-modulated noise. The experimental conditions were held as close as possible to those in the study by Cooke and Lu (2010) so that conclusions could be drawn whether differences between the Lombard effect in Polish speech and English speech existed. Most of the findings on the Lombard effect known from the literature have been confirmed with Polish speech. In three parameters, Polish speakers were more sensitive to modulated backgrounds while English speakers were more sensitive to a stationary background. In both languages, the modulated backgrounds induced speakers to extend pauses in the communication tasks.

Opis:
In this work, transient and free vibration analyses are illustrated for a functionally graded Timoshenko beam (FGM) using finite element method. The governing equilibrium equations and boundary conditions (B-Cs) are derived according to the principle of Hamilton. The materials constituents of the FG beam that vary smoothly along the thickness of the beam (along beam thickness) are evaluated using the rule of mixture method. Power law index, slenderness ratio, modulus of elasticity ratio, and boundary conditions effect of the cantilever and simply supported beams on the dynamic response of the beam are studied. Moreover, the influence of mass distribution and continuous stiffness of the FGM beam are deeply investigated. Comparisons between the current free vibration results (fundamental frequency) and other available studies are performed to check the formulation of the current mathematical model. Good results have been obtained. A significant effect is noticed in the transient response of both simply supported and cantilever beams at the smaller values of the power index and the modulus elasticity ratio.

Opis:
This work has derived the general formula, sufficiently precise for engineering calculations of base frequency of axisymmetric free vibrations of uniform, circular diaphragm type plates clamped at the edge with linearly variable thickness. To solve the boundary problem, the Cauchy’s function method and characteristic series have been applied. The above formula has been derived on the basis of Dunkerley’s formula which is based on the first major term of the characteristic series and results in the simplest, lower bound estimator. The analysis of the formula shows that the base frequency coefficient for diaphragm plates clamped at the edge depends to only a small extent on the Poisson’s ratio, and therefore it may be averaged in the case of construction materials. Comparison of the calculations results of the simplest lower bound estimators for the base frequency obtained by using proposed method, with the results known from the literature as precise solutions, including Conway method, confirmed the high accuracy of the proposed method.

Opis:
The production of highly intelligible syllables in Mandarin Chinese entails a successful production of tones, which poses a challenge for learners of Chinese as a foreign language. The aim of the current paper is to address this issue by identifying the key tonal features contributing to tone intelligibility in the lexemes produced by Polish learners of Mandarin Chinese as a foreign language. Samples of Polish female students’ tonal pronunciations at two stages of learning were selected and compared with productions made by a female native speaker of Mandarin Chinese from Taiwan. Four syllables produced by the students were selected from a corpus of read-out passages which had already been assessed for the intelligibility of monosyllabic lexemes by native judges. The students’ pronunciation samples (whose pronunciation improved from the A1 minus language level to A2) were analysed using pitch, fundamental frequency contour, and register span criteria, and then compared to the female native speaker’s pronunciations of the same syllables. Importantly, before the results of this analysis are presented, the simplified model of tones widely used in language instruction is compared and contrasted with the acoustic analysis of tonal productions made by the native speaker. This is done to show to what extent the simplified, widely used model reflects real-life tonal productions.
Sylaby te zostały poddane analizie wysokości tonu podstawowego, przebiegu tonu i diapazonu i porównane z wymową tych samych sylab przez rodzimą użytkowniczkę. Co ważne, przed przedstawieniem wyników tej analizy szeroko stosowany w nauczaniu języka chińskiego uproszczony model tonów został skonfrontowany z analizą akustyczną produkcji tonów rodzimej użytkowniczki, aby pokazać, w jakim stopniu model uproszczony odzwierciedla rzeczywistą produkcję tonów.

Analysis of vibroacoustic signals is one of the more frequently used diagnostic methods for mechanical devices occurring, among the others, in the car diagnostics. Often, it happens that the most important element of the recorded course is the fundamental harmonic frequency of vibrations. Fundamental frequency indicates the main process related to the operation of the device and allows to follow its course. In the article the author’s method of determining the fundamental frequency in the signal, being the subject of a patent application, will be presented. Its theoretical basis and application examples were discussed comparing the accuracy of its use with the accuracy of other methods. The frequency range where the method finds application is shown. That is, where its accuracy turns out to be better than the accuracy of popular methods used to determine fundamental harmonic frequency component.

Estimating the fundamental frequency and harmonic parameters is basic for signal modelling in a power supply system. Differing from the existing parameter estimation algorithms either in power quality monitoring or in harmonic compensation, the proposed algorithm enables a simultaneous estimation of the fundamental frequency, the amplitudes and phases of harmonic waves. A pure sinusoid is obtained from an input multi-harmonic input signal by finite-impulse-response (FIR) comb filters. Proposed algorithm is based on the use of partial derivatives of the processed signal and the weighted estimation procedure to estimate the fundamental frequency, the amplitude and the phase of a multi-sinusoidal signal. The proposed algorithm can be applied in signal reconstruction, spectral estimation, system identification, as well as in other important signal processing problems. The simulation results verify the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

In the last decade many buildings such as multipurpose buildings, malls, auditoriums, sports halls which have long-span building floor structure. Various research results indicate that in general long-span concrete floor structures have a fundamental frequency of less than 7 Hz. This will risk a resonance if this floor receives dynamic loads of people jogging to follow the song with a frequency of 2-3 Hz. This research was conducted to numerically analyze the long-span building floor model using SAP2000, to determine the fundamental frequency and maximum displacement of the floor structure model. It was also investigated how to increase its fundamental frequency and reduce the maximum displacement. The results have shown that the numerical analysis of the plate model long-span floor building using SAP2000 produces a fundamental frequency of 5.19 Hz. Model III with Reinforcing double equal angles (84x37x10x2.5) steel truss provides the best results, increases the fundamental frequency to be 7.93 Hz, and with a variety of static and dynamic loads, decreases the value of the displacement and far from the allowable displacement.

This paper presents the finite element studies on free vibration of isotropic and laminated composite cylindrical skew panels. The analysis is performed using CQUAD4 and CQUAD8 elements of MSC/NASTRAN. The effects of the panel angle, skew angle, aspect ratio and length-to-thickness-ratio on fundamental frequency of isotropic cylindrical skew panels are studied. The effects of additional parameters such as the fiber orientation angle, numbers of layers and stacking sequence on the fundamental frequency of antisymmetric composite laminates are also studied. It is found that the CQUAD8 element yields better results than the CQUAD4 element in the validation and convergence studies. The CQUAD8 element is employed for the remaining part of the studies. The fundamental frequencies are found to increase with the panel angle and skew angle. When the number of layers in the laminate is large, the variation of the fundamental frequency with the number of layers is not appreciable. The boundary conditions are found to have a significant influence on the fundamental frequency.
