Aluminium foams are a new group of materials used for impact energy absorbing elements. They are light (typically 10-25% of the density of the metal they are made of) and stiff, and are frequently proposed as a light weight structural material. That is why they often are applied in automotive and transport industry solutions, for example as parts of bumpers. The methods of numerical modelling for open and closed cell aluminium foams are presented in the paper as well as closed and open cellfoam microstructure model. The numerical models of foam ideal microstructures created with shell finite elements are shown. The models were developed on the basis of Kefain tetrakaidecahedrons - structures consisting of six squares and eight hexagons. In the case of closed cell foams, the polyhedron with full walls was adopted. In the case of open cell foams the circle wholes were removed from polyhedron surfaces. Then the numerical analysis of a created models compressive test was carried out with the usage of LS Dyna computer code. The nonlinear procedures were applied. The results were analyzed in the scope of energy absorbing properties of aluminium foams.

The paper presents an analysis of the aluminum porous structure serving as a structural material used in the automotive or marine industry. The subject of the research is the analysis of the mechanical properties of the aluminum porous structure, in particular its ability to absorb energy. The paper presents a description of the manufacturing process, quality control in the form of a statistical capture of geometric parameters of the foam made, as well as an X-ray microanalysis of the chemical composition of EPMA-EDS and the dispersion of components within the structure. In addition, results of static axial compression analysis of aluminum and composite foam specimens are presented.

Alkyl amines are widely used as cationic collectors in flotation. In this work, the flotation foaming behaviors of alkyl amines, including dodecylamine (DDA), di-n-hexylamine (DHA), octadecylamine (ODA), oleylamine (OLA), in the presence or absence of quartz were investigated by a new approach, “foam analyzer”. The effects of pH, reagent dosage, concentration of quartz powder, and particle size on foaming property and stability of bubble were explored, and the physical model of foam structure evolution was established. The adsorption mechanism of amines on quartz surface was studied from molecular structure, surface tension, zeta potential, charging mode, and adsorption form. The results show the foam stability of four amine collectors as follows: OLA > ODA > DHA > DDA. In the range of pH=6-10, the foam properties of the four amines are better. Under the same conditions, the longer carbon chain of aliphatic amine, the more unsaturated bonds, the fewer hydrogen atoms of the amine group, and the corresponding foam properties are better. When the concentration of quartz powder is 8-10%, the foaming and stability of the foam of four kinds amines are the best, The finer quartz powder particle size, the more stable the amine foam and the stronger the foamability.

The article presents the ecological aspects of the lost foam technology. The results of environmental tests carried out on an experimental stand for pouring of moulds with liquid metal and knocking out of castings in the lost foam process were presented. The influence of the lost foam technology on the work environment was determined.

Polyurethane foams due to their easily regulated domain structure are group of polymers with highly variable properties. They are widely used to provide comfort in many areas of daily life. Because of toxic products polyurethane foam waste cannot be disposed by means of thermal degradation, they also show a high resistance to chemical and physical factors. Those properties combined with their low apparent density and widespread use (about 18 million tons per year) lead to a significant volume of waste that is stored in landfills. In Poland, more than 60% of those landfills, certified as well as illegal, are located in rural areas. The aim of this study was to determine the enzymatic abilities of microorganisms isolated from foam waste, which can potentially decompose polyurethane (ureases, esterases, proteases, and laccases), and to determine their ability to grow on a medium containing polyurethane foam as the only carbon source. Most of the tested strains produced ureases while the least produced were laccases and proteases. Four of the tested strains: Epicoccum nigrum, Aspergillusniger, Staphylococcusxylosus and Rhodococcus spp. showed significant growth on the medium with polyurethane foam as sole carbon source.

This paper describes the compressive crush behaviour of spheres of closed-cell aluminium foams with different diameters (6, 8 and 10 mm) and square tubes filled with these spheres. The spheres of closed-cell aluminium foams are net spherical shape fabricated via powder metallurgy methods by heating foamable precursor materials in a mould. The square tubes were filled by pouring the spheres of closed-cell aluminium foams freely (without any bonding). The compressive crush performance of square tubes filled with spheres of closed-cell aluminum foams were compared to that of the empty tubes. The results show a significant influence of the spheres of closed-cell aluminium foam on the average crushing load of the square tubes. The energy absorption in the square tube filled with spheres of closed-cell aluminium foam with diameters of 10 mm is higher than in the other square tubes. The spheres of closed-cell aluminium foams led to improvement of the energy absorption capacity of empty tubes.

This study examined the interaction of solid nanoparticles and anionic and non-ionic surfactant at an air–water interface. Aqueous foams stabilized by silica nanoparticles in water with different levels of salinity were studied in detail. The stability of solid/surfactant dispersion was evaluated visually. Nanoparticles content impact and concentration of surfactant on the foamability, deliquification of foams and structure of wet foams were studied. It was found that the foamability of dispersion depends either on the surfactant concentration or on the nanoparticles concentration. The adsorption of hydrophobically modified silica particles and surfactants reduces the air/water interface tension. The results of the examinations showed that the use of nanoparticles allows to increase the efficiency of brine unloading even up to 20%. Surfactant particle and nanosilica present synergistic action, use of 4 wt% of nanoparticles allows to reduce surfactant consumption up to half. The cost of the preparation of the proposed dispersion is slightly higher, about 5%, compared to the sole surfactant.

Metallic foams are materials that are subject of an ongoing research with the broad applicability in many different areas (e.g. automotive industry, building industry, medicine, etc.). These metal materials contain in their structure artificially created pores. These pores give them specific properties, such as: large rigidity at low density, high thermal conductivity, capability to absorb energy, etc. Since the discovery of porous metallic materials numerous methods of production have been developed. The aim of the paper is to introduce effective casting methods of manufacturing of metallic foams, namely cast metal filters from the aluminum alloy. Research deals with investment casting with use of pattern made of polymeric foam, which is used for production of metallic foam with open pores. The main disadvantage of this procedure consists in removing the mould material without damaging the fine structure of the cast filter. Plaster is used as the mould material and the most important result of this paper is the presentation of the effective procedure of plaster removal from the porous structure of cast filters.
Piany metalowe są przedmiotem wielu badań gdyż znajdują szerokie zastosowanie w wielu dziedzinach np. produkcji samochodów. budownictwie czy w medycynie. W swojej strukturze zawierają sztucznie wytworzone pory, zapewniające uzyskanie specyficznych właściwości jak duża wytrzymałość, niewielka gęstość, wysokie przewodnictwo cieplne zdolność do absorpcji energii itp. Od czasu wynalezienia porowatych materiałów metalowych opracowano wiele metod ich wytwarzania. Celem opracowania jest wprowadzenie efektywnych metod odlewniczych produkcji pian metalowych, szczególnie ze stopów glinu. Studium zajmuje się precyzyjną metodą odlewania przy zastosowaniu modelu wykonanego z piany polimerowej stosowanej w produkcji piany z otwartymi porami. Główna niedogodność metody polega na trudności usuwania materiału formierskiego, bez naruszenia delikatnej struktury odlewanego filtra. Jako materiał formierski stosuje się gips i najważniejszym wynikiem pracy jest przedstawienie efektywnej procedury usuwania gipsu z porowatej struktury odlanego filtra.

The subject of the paper is a circular plate under radial compression. The plate is made of metal foam. Properties of the plate vary across its thickness. The middle plane of the plate is its symmetry plane. The field of displacement of any cross section of the plate, nonlinear components of the strain field and the stress field are defined. Basing on the Hamilton principle, a system of differential equations of dynamic stability of the plate is formulated. This basic system of equations is approximately solved. The results of the studies are compared to the homogeneous circular plate and shown in figures.
Przedmiotem pracy jest płyta kołowa obciążona promieniowo. Płyta wykonana jest z piany metalowej. Właściwości mechaniczne płyty są zmienne na jej grubości. Płaszczyzna środkowa płyty jest jej płaszczyzną symetrii. Zdefiniowano pole przemieszczeń dla dowolnego przekroju poprzecznego płyty, nieliniowe odkształcenia oraz naprężenia. Układ równań różniczkowych stateczności dynamicznej płyty zdefiniowano na podstawie zasady Hamiltona. Układ ten rozwiązano w sposób przybliżony. Wyniki badań numerycznych tej płyty porównano z odpowiednimi wielkościami dla płyty jednorodnej i przedstawiono na rysunkach.

One of the possible options as a material for protective layers is aluminum foams which become also very popular due to their lightweight and excellent plastic energy absorbing properties. Such characteristics have been appreciated by the automotive industry with continued research to further understand foam properties. Compressed foaming materials exhibit extensive plastic response, while the initial elastic region is limited in tension by a tensile brittle-failure stress. Aluminum foams have become also an attractive material as blast protective layers due to their desirable compressive properties. With different material engineering techniques (as, for example double-layer foam cladding) they can be customized to achieve the most desirable properties. Energy absorption capacity of foams microstructures under blast load was analytically confirmed based on a rigid-perfectly plastic-locking foam model Initial research indicates that energy absorbed by the cladding is much larger than that under quasi-static conditions due to strain rate effect. In this paper a numerical model of a closed cell aluminum foam idealistic microstructure was presented. The quasi static compression tests were carried out with the use of LS Dyna computer code. Then the sample was numerically loaded with the blast wavefrom detonation of explosives and its behavior was analyzed. The results ofboth analyses were compared.

Recently, a new class of ceramic foams with porosity levels up to 90% has been developed as a result of the association of the gelcasting process and aeration of the ceramic suspension. This paper presents and discusses original results advertising sound absorbing capabilities of such foams. The authors man- ufactured three types of alumina foams in order to investigate three porosity levels, namely: 72, 88, and 90%. The microstructure of foams was examined and typical dimensions and average sizes of cells (pores) and cell-linking windows were found for each porosity case. Then, the acoustic absorption coefficient was measured in a wide frequency range for several samples of various thickness cut out from the foams. The results were discussed and compared with the acoustic absorption of typical polyurethane foams proving that the alumina foams with high porosity of 88-90% have excellent sound absorbing properties competitive with the quality of sound absorbing PU foams of higher porosity.

In this study, palladium-modified nickel foam substrate was applied to examine ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR) in 0.1 M NaOH supporting solution. An EOR catalyst was prepared by physical vapour deposition (PVD) of palladium onto Ni foam material. Temperature-dependent kinetics of the EOR were studied over the temperature range: 20-60°C by means of a.c. impedance spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry techniques. Deposition of a noble metal additive was clearly exposed through scanning electron microscopy: SEM/EDX-supported analysis. Most importantly, this work investigated the effect of pre-deposited fullerene on nickel foam, on the catalytic (EOR) properties of such-produced Ni foam/Pd composite material.

The study presents the results of an experimental method for purification of household sewage on the biofilters filled with polyurethane waste in the form of trims of upholstery foam (PUF). We assessed the removal effectiveness of organic compounds, ammonium nitrogen and total suspended solids from sewage pre-treated in a septic tank at hydraulic loading ranging from 31.8 to 229.2 mm-1. The results of five month study identified the biofilter filled with 30 cm thick foam as the most effectively removing BOD5, CODCr, N-NH4+ and total suspended solids. Average reduction in pollutant levels for this filter reached 95%, 94%, 84% and 68%, respectively. PUR foam in the form of trims of upholstery foam filling the vertical flow filters ensured favorable conditions for the development of heterotrophic and nitrifying bacteria without any need for additional aeration.

Metal foams are new, as yet imperfectly characterized, class of materials with low densities and novel physical, mechanical, thermal, electrical and acoustic properties. They offer a potential for lightweight structures, for energy absorption, and for thermal management; and at least some of them are cheap. Such characteristics have been appreciated by the automotive industry in the aspect of crash and impact phenomenon. Energy absorption capacity of foams under dynamic load was analytically confirmed based on a rigid-perfectly plastic-locking foam model. In this paper the development process of a real closed cell foam microstructure based on finite element model with the use of SD scanning is shown. Computed tomography (CT) is a medical imaging method employing tomography created by computer processing. Digital geometry processing is used to generale a three-dimensional image of the inside of an object from a large series of two-dimensional X-ray images taken around a single axis of rotation. The numerical analyses carried out with the usage of LS Dyna computer code of the quasi static and dynamic compression tests are presented. The most important mechanisms and phenomena that appeared in the microstructural sample are described. In the final part of these investigations the comparison process between numerical and experimental test was performed. The results confirmed the good correspondence between both tests.

Metal and polyurethane foams exhibit interesting properties. They are light, have good acoustic and/or magnetic isolation as well as ability to absorb the vibration and impact energy. They are used for sandwich panels, impact absorbers (i.e. as elements of the buffer constructions in rail vehicles), fillers ofconstruction parts, bodies of vehicles (i.e. floating combat vehicles) and for dividing walls of vessels and others. Speciflcally made open cell foams demonstrate auxetic properties and the shape memory effect. Such materials are very good for seats in aircrafts which may protect pilots and passengers during crashes and limit heavy backbone injuries. Foams are used for filtering purposes. Foams or their in combination with different types of fillers (i.e. elastomers) or the ceramic reinforcement may be used in impact energy absorbing panels for military aim (protection against an explosion shock wave and splinters). In the paper aluminium open-cell foam structures were investigated for their energy absorption ability. For this purpose a series of numerical 3D models were applied. Geometry of the models was based on Kehin's polyhedrons. Tests of uniaxial compression were simulated with the use of LS-Dyna computer code. Complex contact phenomena were considered. Preliminary test were performed with the use of single foam cell models. Further simulations were conducted using 3x3x3 cell models. The results were analyzed as force/time characteristics.

Comparison of functional properties of selected vegetable hydrocolloids and emulsifiers

Opis:
Physico-chemical properties of selected stabilizing substances, namely natural hydrocolloids, natural and modified starches and natural and synthetic emulsifiers, were studied. The emulsifiers are prominent among the investigated stabilizing substances in view of their high foam formation and fat emulsification capacities. The frimulsion-type hydrocolloids exhibit a similar or sometimes even higher emulsifying effectivenes greater emulsion stability. None of the studied starches displayed emulsifying properties, and they stabilize solutions by increasing their viscosity, a process due to starch pasting.
Przeprowadzono ocenę porównawczą właściwości fizykochemicznych wybranych hydrokoloidów i emulgatorów produkcji krajowej i zagranicznej. Przebadano następujące grupy substancji stabilizujących : hydrokoloidy naturalne, skrobie naturalne i modyfikowane oraz emulgatory naturalne i syntetyczne. Spośród substancji stabilizujących emulgatory wyróżniają się wysoką zdolnością pianotwórczą oraz wysoką zdolnością emulgowania tłuszczu, przy czym hydrokoloidy typu frimulsionów mają zbliżoną, a niekiedy nawet wyższą wydajność emulgowania i zdolność stabilizacji emulsji. Frimulsiony wyróżniają się bardzo wysoką , najwyższą spośród badanych substancji adsorpcją wody oraz wysoką lepkością nawet przy 1% stężeniach; świadczy to o ich wszechstronnym działaniu zarówno zagęszczającym, jak i emulgującym. Wszystkie badane skrobie nie mają właściwości emulgujących, a stabilizują roztwory przez wzrost lepkości po ich skleikowaniu. Krajowe skrobie modyfikowane mają mają niską zdolność zagęszczania zbliżoną do skrobi naturalnych oraz niską zdolność rozpuszczania w wodzie na zimno. Można zaliczyć je do tzw. skrobi pęczniejących wymagających dodatkowego skleikowania przez ogrzanie.

Badano przebieg separacji pianowej białek mlecznych we współprądowej kolumnie barbotażowej. Wyznaczono stałe szybkości flotacji. Ze wzrostem prędkości przepływu powietrza zaobserwowano korzystny dla procesu wzrost stałych szybkości procesu. Stała szybkości flotacji osiąga wartość maksymalną dla pil odpowiadającego naturalnemu pH roztworów białek mlecznych. Szybkość flotacji spada wyraźnie, jeśli stężenie białka przewyższy 40 g-m3.
A course of foam separation of milk proteins was studied in a cocurrent bubble column. Flotation rate constant values were determined. An increase of flotation rate constant was observed with the increase of air flow rate. A value of flotation rate constant reached its maximum for the natural pH value of milk proteins solutions. The rate of foam separation diminished distinctly if the initial milk protein concentration is higher than 40 g-m3.

The article describes the design of a proven technology for the production of metal foam and porous metal by the foundry. Porous metal formed by infiltrating liquid metal into a mould cavity appears to be the fastest and most economical method. However, even here we cannot do without the right production parameters. Based on the research, the production process was optimised and subsequently a functional sample of metal foam with an irregular internal structure - a filter - was produced. The copper alloy filter was cast into a gypsum mould using an evaporable model. Furthermore, a functional sample of porous metal with a regular internal structure was produced - a heat exchanger. The aluminium alloy heat exchanger was cast into a green sand mould using preforms. Also, a porous metal casting with a regular internal structure was formed for use as an element in deformation zones. This aluminium alloy casting was made by the Lost Foam method. The aim is therefore to ensure the production of healthy castings, which would find use in the field of filtration of liquid metal or flue gases, in vehicles in the field of shock energy absorption and also in energy as a heat exchanger.

Statistically, at least 50% of all injuries experienced by police officers in the line of duty are due to assaults with blunt objects. Therefore, vests used by the police should provide not only good ballistic resistance, but also good protection against such threats. Foamed materials are possible to be used for body protectors or inserts of protective clothes. The effects of dynamic impact with beaters of different shapes onto behaviour of polymeric foamed material were determined. There were used four types of beaters: flat, cylindrical, edgy and cornered. Strikes with blunt objects such as a flat board, baseball bat, edgy brick, pavement brick or a sharp stone, to which a protective ware can be subjected, were simulated. The impact load was applied to the rectangular specimens, made of polyvinyl chloride foam, with a usage of a drop hammer. Plots of force versus compression for all the tested samples were obtained and analysed. The effects of impacts with beaters of different shapes onto foamed material samples were presented. A shape of the blunt object significantly influences crushing behaviour of the foamed material. The impact energy of a flat beater is absorbed effectively on a short distance, since it is spread on a relatively large surface. The cylindrical and edgy beaters did not cause fragmentation of the samples, however, on the upper surfaces of the samples, permanent deformations mapping the beaters shapes as well as some cracks occurred. An impact with a sharp object, for example, a cornered beater is very difficult to be neutralized by the foam material, because it is cumulated on a small area.

This paper analyses the experimental findings within heat transfer when heating up air, water and oil streams which are passed through a duct with internal structural packing elements in the form of metal foams. Three types of aluminum foams with different cell sizes, porosity specifications and thermal conductivities were used in the study. The test data were collected and they made it possible to establish the effect of the foam geometry, properties of fluids and flow hydrodynamic conditions on the convective heat transfer process from the heating surface to the fluid flowing by (wetting) that surface. The foam was found to be involved in heat transfer to a limited extent only. Heat is predominantly transferred directly from the duct wall to a fluid, and intensity of convective heat transfer is controlled by the wall effects. The influence of foam structural parameters, like cell size and/or porosity, becomes more clearly apparent under laminar flow conditions.

The space-time dynamics of chlorophyll a concentration and seawater excess viscosity has been investigated in the hydrographically contrasting inshore and offshore water masses of the eastern English Channel. This was done during the phytoplankton spring bloom dominated by Phaeocystis globosa before and after the very large-scale formation of foam induced by an increase in wind-driven turbulence and the related wave breakings. The results suggest that the dynamics of chlorophyll a concentration and seawater excess viscosity are differentially controlled by the formation of foam through the intensity of the spring bloom and wind-generated turbulence.

Opracowano receptury cytokompatybilnych otwartokomórkowych lepkosprężystych pianek poliuretanowych (VEPUR), nadających się do wielokrotnego prania z wykorzystaniem domowej pralki automatycznej.Pianki otrzymywano z polioli zawierających ugrupowania oksyetylenowe (EO) i oksypropylenowe (PO). Nietoksyczne pianki o różnej twardości syntetyzowano z dodatkowym udziałem polioli zawierających ok. 80 % wiązań EO przy indeksie izocyjanianowym 0,9–1,0. W syntezie wykorzystano też reaktywne inhibitory, pozwalające na zmniejszenie szybkości reakcji spieniania, co zapobiegało zjawisku opadania. Otrzymane pianki wykazywały optymalny czas powrotu 1–8 s, dużą przepuszczalność powietrza 80–150 dm3/min, duży współczynnik absorpcji wody 1700–2100 %, mały współczynnik retencji wody 60–70 % i niewielki wzrost objętości po namoczeniu (poniżej 15 %). Cechy te predestynują opracowane materiały do wielokrotnego prania. Po pięciu cyklach prania twardość pianek zmieniła się nieznacznie, natomiast użytkownicy wyrobów obserwowali zdecydowaną poprawę w zakresie higieny oraz komfortu snu.
The formulations of non-cytotoxic viscoelastic polyurethane open-cell foams (VEPUR), which are suitable for multiple washing using household automatic washing machine, were developed. The foams were prepared using polyols containing ethoxylate (EO) and propoxylate (PO) groups. In order to ensure no cytotoxicity, the foams with different hardness, including additional polyols containing about 80 % of EO groups and having isocyanate index of 0.9–1.0, were synthesized. The foams were prepared using reactive inhibitors, which allowed to decrease the reaction rate in order to avoid collapsing. The prepared VEPUR foams had promising qualities such as: optimal recovery time (1–8 s), high air permeability (80–150 dm3/min), high water absorption coefficient (1700–2100 %), low water retention coefficient (60–70 %) and low volume increase after soaking (less than 15 %). This characteristics makes the developed foams suitable for multiple washing. After five cycles of machine washing the hardness of the foams was changed very slightly, while the users of the foam products observed a substantial improvement of the hygiene and comfort of sleep.

Extensive experiments of foam spray drying process to estimate the effects of feed foaming on final product properties of skin-forming and porous materials are presented in the paper. Experimental results confirm the effect of feed foaming on final product properties and show an increase of Sauter mean diameter and porosity of the product, decrease of bulk density, tap density and apparent density at higher foaming gas rates.
W artykule przedstawiono wyniki szeregu badań procesu suszenia rozpry-skowego materiałów spienianych. Analizowano wpływ spieniania surówki na parametry końcowe produktu dla materiałów typu skin-forming oraz materiałów porowatych. Wyniki eksperymentów potwierdzają wpływ procesu spieniania na właściwości produktu końcowego i pokazują, iż dla większego przepływu gazu spieniającego następuje wzrost średniej średnicy Saute-ra i porowatości produktu jak również zmniejszenie gęstości: nasypowej, utrzęsionej i rzeczywistej.

Disposable foundry models constitute an increasingly important role in a unitary large-size foundry. These models have many benefits, but technologies using such materials require an understanding of degradation kinetics at the time of filling. The studies presented in the article determine the size of the polystyrene combustion products used for disposable foundry models. The results were obtained by carrying out the combustion process of the polystyrene model in a special combustion chamber, in different configurations. The pressures generated during thermal degradation vary depending on process parameters such as model density or the use of an additional adhesive binder. The results of laboratory tests may suggest what values of pressure are generated when filling in full-mold and lost foam technologies. The studies provide a prelude to further analysis of materials used for disposable foundry models and quantitative evaluation of their thermal degradation products for computer simulation.

In the course of the mature gas fields exploitation there are many technical problems including the corrosion damage, formation of hydrates and water cut. In many cases, an effective solution of these problems is the dosage of appropriately selected chemicals. Commercially available corrosion inhibitors, hydrate inhibitors, demulsifiers and foaming agents are injected in a form of single, multifunctional mixture through one liner which reduces injection costs. The paper presents the results of laboratory tests, which aim was to investigate synergism and antagonism in multifunctional mixture containing different commercially available surfactants, corrosion and hydrate inhibitors. Correlations between final product composition and performances such as liquid unloading efficiency, corrosion protection and pour point were studied. The described approach allows to adapt the tertiary mixture composition (foaming agent + corrosion inhibitor + hydrates inhibitor) to the current production conditions. The polarization behavior of electrodes in brines with and without mixture of additives has been studied by a cyclic voltammetric method. The addition of increasing concentrations of each chemicals causes the reduction in the corrosion current density. The measurements using a modified method of the US Bureau of Mines show synergistic effect of surfactants and corrosion inhibitor on foamabilities. Multifunctional mixtures are stable under storage conditions and not cause any compatibility problems with reservoir fluids.

The process of cross-linking of polyethylene using gamma radiation (γ) and electron beam (EB) was tested from the point of view of density of foam. Particular attention was paid to the postradiation oxidation effect of the polymers. The study used two types of radiation sources of varying dose rates: gamma radiation (4 kGy/h) and EB (14 000 kGy/h). Radiolysis studies of the polymers used the radiation yield of hydrogen evolved (GH2 , approximately proportional to the number of radicals) and radiation yield of oxygen absorbed by the polymer (GO2 ). Oxidation of polymer due to radiation was also evaluated using diffuse reflectance spectroscopy.

A poly(hydroxybutyl citrate) p(HBC) was obtained. The product compound produced in the solution during esterification, was added to rigid polyurethane-polyisocyanurate foams (PUR-PIR). The amount of petrochemical polyol in the foams was decreased in favor of the p(HBC) from 0.1 to 0.5 equivalent. The foams were foamed in two ways: with distilled water (W foams) and with Solkane 365/227 (S foams). The examination results of both foam series were compared. They showed that the foams foamed with water have higher softening temperature than the foams foamed with solkane. The retention values for both foam series are around 91–95%, and water absorption in the range of 0.7–3.2%. The anisotropy coefficient did not exceed 1.08 (the lowest value being 1.01).

This article presents the process of production of metal-ceramic foams in Basic Technological Sciences Institute, Maritime University of Szczecin. It also describes structural solutions for Gass insufflation, foam Deception, product forming and construction of prototype device which lathers composites with warp of aluminium alloy and SiC reinforcement in the form of particles. This article is a part of research of a project realized in unit mentioned above and presented solutions are patented.

Głównym celem pracy była walidacja modelu numerycznego spienionego polichlorku winylu wraz z oceną zdolności pochłaniania energii przez podstawowy element konstrukcji energochłonnej obciążonej dynamicznie. Elementy energochłonne przebadano w KMiIS. Badania przeprowadzono na maszynie wytrzymałościowej Instron. Obciążenie realizowano przez wymuszenie kinematyczne.
In the present article, the results of investigations of energy absorption foam structures weighted down were presented. The main objective of this study was the validations of constitutive models for non metallic foam. Investigations were conducted on Dynamic Testing System INSTRON in KMiIS. The load was applied by input function kinematic.

Opis:
The subject of the paper is a simply supported rectangular sandwich plate. The plate is compressed in plane. It is assumed that the plate under consideration is symmetrical in build and consists of two isotropic facings and a core. The middle plane of the plate is its symmetry plane. The core is made of a metal foam with properties varying across its thickness. The porouscellular metal as a core of the three layered plate is of continuous structure, while its mechanical properties are isotropic. Dimensionless coefficients are introduced to compensate for this. The field of displacements and geometric relationships are assumed. This non-linear hypothesis is generalization of the classical hypotheses, in particular, the broken-line hypothesis. The principle of stationarity of the total potential energy of the compressed sandwich plate is used and a system of differential equations is formulated. This system is approximately solved. The forms of unknown functions are assumed, which satisfy boundary conditions for supports of the plate. Critical loads for a family of sandwich plates are numerically determined. Results of the calculation are shown in figures.
Przedmiotem pracy jest prostokątna płyta trójwarstwowa podparta przegubowo na czterech brzegach i ściskana w płaszczyźnie środkowej. Okładziny płyty są izotropowe i o takich samych właściwościach mechanicznych. Rdzeń wykonany z pianki metalowej jest również izotropowy, jego właściwości mechaniczne są zmienne na grubości. Płaszczyzna środkowa płyty jest jej płaszczyzną symetrii. Zdefiniowano pole przemieszczeń dla dowolnego punktu rdzenia oraz okładzin płyty. Sformułowano energię odkształcenia sprężystego płyty i pracę obciążenia. Następnie z zasady stacjonarności całkowitej energii potencjalnej otrzymano układ równań równowagi, który rozwiązano analitycznie w sposób przybliżony i wyznaczono obciążenie krytyczne płyty.

The purpose of the study was to modify PU (polyurethane) foams to increase the efficiency of Citrobacter freundii cells adhesion. The immobilization can contribute to better productivity during the bioconversion of glycerol to 1,3-propanediol (1,3-PD). The results of the study showed that C. freundii immobilized on foams with organic additives could decompose more glycerol and produce more 1,3-PD than cells immobilized on pure foams. The immobilization made production in long-term operations or repeated runs possible. The results of the experiments have also proved that the foams with additives, especially with wood chips and peanut shells, would be the most suitable carriers because they allow the immobilization of a higher number of bacterial cells. It was demonstrated that the initial number of C. freundii cells in all samples (before incubation) was 1.2×106 CFU/mL. The results showed that the accumulation of bacterial cells in the control sample with pure PUF (polyurethane foams) was 1.5×107 CFU/mL after 24 hours of incubation (the number of bacterial cells attached to surface of foams). It was determined that the accumulation of bacterial cells in samples with 15% of additives at 30 °C increased to 2.17×107/ 3.37×107/ 1.25×108/ 1.65×108/ 5.65×107 CFU (PUFbtb, PUFab, PUFwch, PUFps, PUFrc) CFU/mL after 24 hours of incubation.

In the present paper, friction stir processing (FSP) is used to fabricate magnesium-based nanocomposite foams. The effects of the number of FSP passes, TiH2 to Al2O3 weight ratio, and foaming temperature; on the pore distribution and porosity are described. The results indicate that a minimum TiH2 to Al2O3 weight ratio is necessary to provide the best pore distribution and porosity. Closed-cell porous magnesium with a porosity of about 17.5% was successfully fabricated using 4-pass FSP at 800 rpm, by adding 5 mass% TiH2 and 3.5 mass% Al2O3; at a holding temperature of 858 K, and a holding time of 45 min.

Wpływ konstrukcji mebli tapicerowanych na komfort w okresie długotrwałego użytkowania. Głównym celem pracy była analiza wpływu zmian konstrukcji siedzisk mebli tapicerowanych na pomiar komfortu mebli nowych oraz po długotrwałym ich użytkowaniu. Badania przeprowadzone były przy użyciu maty sensorowej Force Sensitive Applications z odczytem naprężeń kontaktowych oraz profilowanego wgłębia wciskanego w siedzisko siłą 760 N. Okres 5 letniego, długotrwałego użytkowania zasymulowano działaniem cyklicznego obciążenia 1000N x 25000 powtórzeń. Na podstawie przeprowadzonych analiz uzyskanych wyników badań zaobserwowano niekorzystny wzrost współczynnika dyskomfortu D o około 0,8% przy zaobserwowanym spadku o 12,7 % dla siedziska I i 11,5% dla siedziska II. Oznacza to wzrost odczucia komfortu użytkowania siedzisk I i II w okresie użytkowania. Wiąże się to ze spadkiem sztywności siedzisk. Siedziska o niższej sztywności („bardziej miękkie”) wywołują mniejszy nacisk na ludzkie ciało z uwagi na większą powierzchnię użytkową.

Opis:
Open cellularceramic foam with the Mn-Cu catalyst layered was investigated in the toluene combustion process. Foam morphology was studied using computed microtomography. The results proved satisfactory functioning of the foam supported catalyst, better than the monolith supported one, probably due to more intense mass transfer of the foam-based reactor.
Stała piana ceramiczna o otwartych porach z naniesionym katalizatorem Mn-Cu była badana w procesie dopalania toluenu. Morfologia piany była badana z użyciem mikrotomografii komputerowej. Wyniki wykazały zadowalające funkcjonowania katalizatora naniesionego na pianę, prawdopodobnie wobec intensywniejszego transportu masy.

Results of investigations into integration of foam titanium implants (FTI), with rabbit bone are presented. Three groups of implants were examined: clean titanium implants produced by selective laser melting, FTI coated with a thin film of octacalcium phosphate (OCP), doped with 0.6 weight percent of Mg, deposited by pulsed laser deposition (PLD), and FTI with hydroxyapatite (HA) doped with 0.6 wt.% of Mg. Analysis of histopathology of implants' integration with bone were performed by staining using the triple chromatographic method of Masson - Goldner, pla- nimetric analysis using the Kruskal - Wallis test, an ANOVA test and microtomography. The best results were obtained for implants coated with HA, followed by those coated with OCP. Implants from these two groups showed superior integration with bone than uncoated titanium implants.

Przeprowadzono badania dotyczące frakcjonowania pianowego lakazy z płynu pohodowlanego szczepu Cerrena unicolor. Zbadano wpływ pH oraz dodatku bromku cetylotrimetyloamoniowego na podział międzyfazowy enzymu oraz na jego odzysk w kondensacie piany, jak również zmiany w efektywności przenoszenia lakazy do fazy pianowej w równych odstępach czasowych. Optymalne warunki osiągnięto w pH 4. Dodatek detergentu w zakresie 0,4÷1,0 mM zwiększał zarówno współczynnik podziału aktywności jak i odzysk w kondensacie piany. Szybkość przenoszenia enzymu w czasie była stała.
Experiments regarding foam fractionation of laccase from culture supernatant of Cerrena unicolor strain were conducted. Influences of pH value and cetrimonium bromide addition on partitioning coefficient and yields in the foamate were investigated. Additionally, changes in effectiveness of laccase transport toward foam over time weremeasured. The optimum pH for the process was equal to 4.0.The detergent addition increased values of partitioning coefficients and yields in the foamate. The rate of enzyme transport toward foam was constant.

Opis:
The influence of impulse load applied for different duration on the distribution of normalised dynamic radial stresses in positive and negative Poisson’s ratio medium was investigated in this study. For solving the non-stationary problem in the case of plane deformation for structurally inhomogeneous materials, the model of Cosserat continuum was applied. This model enables accounting for the influence of shear-rotation deformation of micro-particles of the medium. In the framework of Cosserat elasticity, on applying the Fourier transforms for time variable and developing the boundary integral equation method, solving of the non-stationary problem reduces to the system of singular integral equations, where the components that determine the influence of shear-rotation deformations are selected. The numerical calculations were performed for the foam medium with positive and negative Poisson’s ratio for different values of time duration of impulse. Developed approach can be used to predict the mechanical behaviour of foam auxetic materials obtained at different values of a volumetric compression ratio under the action of time variable load based on analysis of the dis-tribution of radial stresses in foam medium.

The paper deals with the numerical analysis of foam materials. Open cell foam is investigated. Numerical simulations allow calculating modes of destruction and assessing effective properties of the model structures. Metal as well as polyurethane foams show out interesting properties. They are light, have good acoustic and/or magnetic isolation, have ability to absorb energy of vibration and hits. They are used for sandwich panels, hit absorber s (i.e. as elements of buffer constructions in rail vehicles),fillers of construction parts, bodies of vehicles (i.e. floating combat vehicles), dividing walls on vessels and others. Specially prepared open cell foams show out auxetic properties and shape memory effect. Such materials are very good for seats in aircrafts which may protect pilots and passengers during crashes and restrict heavy backbone injuries. Foams are used for filtering purposes. Foams themselves or in combination with different types of fillers (i.e. elastomers) or ceramic reinforcement may be used for hit energy absorbing panels for military purposes (protection against explosion shock wave and splinters). Presented work is a part of a series of numerical experiments which aim is to investigate the influence of geometry parameters onto effective properties of the foam. Different types of geometries are used for numerical experiments. All the models of single foam cell are based on Kelvin grain geometry. Numerical compression tests performed with the use of models based on 2D finite elements provide studying the process of the structure failure. Effective characteristics of investigated foams show out that such materials would be useful for energy absorbing purposes.

The use of foam-based applications as a method of drug delivery represents a recent and promising area of research. The interaction of foam and porous substrates have been recently theoretically described using a mathematical model, which combines the equation of foam drainage with that of imbibition of liquid into the porous substrate. Below the drainage of foam placed on chalk experimentally investigated to verify the theory prediction. The surfactants sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and Triton X-100 were used to form a foam. The initial liquid volume fractions of the foam were found to be ranging in between 14.12 and 16.46%. The porosity and permeability of the chalk substrate were experimentally obtained at 59.1% and 3.122·10-11 m2 respectively. The height of foam deposited onto the thick porous substrate (chalk) was 2.5 cm and 6 cm. The imbibition into the chalk, the height of foam, and the bubble size within the foam were monitored. The latter enabled the kinetics of the drainage/imbibition to be determined and compared with the predictions according to the theoretical model. The rate of decrease in foam height was initially high and decreased over time as predicted by the theoretical model. All the foam displayed an initial rapid imbibition through the porous substrate, which is again in the agreement with the theory predictions. It was found that solutions with lower surfactant concentrations could penetrate deeper into the chalk. The imbibition front was observed to be uniform: evenly distributed liquid throughout the cross-section of the porous substrate.

A literature review and own investigations have been a base for presenting various methods of the synthesis of bio-polyols from renewable raw materials as well as their potential applications in the formulations of flexible and rigid polyurethane foams (Table 1). A characteristics of selected bio-polyols (Table 2) and their effect on foaming process of different polyurethane compositions are shown (Fig. 1, Table 3). Examples of the influence of selected bio-polyols on cell structures and physical and mechanical properties of both flexible (Fig. 2) and rigid (Table 4) foams are also presented.
Na podstawie przeglądu literatury i badań własnych omówiono różne metody wytwarzania bio-polioli z surowców odnawialnych oraz możliwości ich zastosowania w syntezie elastycznych isztywnych pianek poliuretanowych (tabela 1). Zaprezentowano charakterystykę wybranych bio-polioli (tabela 2) oraz ich wpływ na przebieg procesu spieniania różnych kompozycji poliuretanowych (rys.1, tabela 3). Podano przykłady wpływu wybranych bio-polioli na strukturę komórkową i właściwości fizyczne i mechaniczne modyfikowanych pianek elastycznych (rys. 2) i sztywnych (tabela 4).

W artykule przedstawiono wpływ pianotwórczy kompozycji gaśniczych na środowisko naturalne z uwzględnieniem metod oceny biodegradowalności i toksyczności. Analizowano także oddziaływanie poszczególnych składników pianotwórczych środków gaśniczych na ekosystem oraz przedstawiono kierunki zmian bazy surowcowej w nowo opracowywanych recepturach. Praca naukowa finansowana była przez Ministerstwo Nauki i Szkolnictwa Wyższego ze środków na naukę w latach 2007-2010 jako projekt badawczy rozwojowy numer R00-O0046/03 "Badania nad otrzymaniem ekologicznego, biodegradowalnego środka zwilżającego, zwiększającego skuteczność akcji ratowniczo-gaśniczych i podnoszącego bezpieczeństwo powszechne kraju".
This article describes the environmental impact of foam extinguishing agents including testing methods of biodegradation and toxicity. The influence of individual elements of fire extinguishing foam on the ecosystem and directions of amendments of the resource of chemical feed to prescriptions newly compositions were described. Scientific work financially supported from funds reserved for science in 2007-2010, as a research and development project R00-O0046/03: "Badania nad otrzymaniem ekologicznego, biodegradowalnego środka zwilżającego, zwiększającego skuteczność akcji ratowniczo-gaśniczych i podnoszącego bezpieczeństwo powszechne kraju".

The aim of the present study is to create a composite material possessing useful properties enabling the waste fly ash to be utilized. To obtain the final material, fly ash is subjected to separation by size and density. The innovative approach to making the composite material is the use of chemical nickel deposition by which the free particles are bonded as a solid body. Deposition of nickel was carried out by two stages: first Ni-coating of the particles and second – bonding of the particles by nickel deposition. Structure of this material is near to syntactic foam. Some properties of the obtained material as a porosity, density, and permeability with regard to its application have been investigated.

Different types of geometries are used for numerical experiments. All the models of single foam cell are based on Kelvin grain geometry. Numerical compression tests performed with the use of models based on solid finite elements provide studying the process of the structure failure. Effective characteristics of investigated foams show out that such materials would be useful for energy absorbing purposes.

Cellular solids are materials made out of solid strut or thin plate like structures bridged together. They occur in nature in the form of honeycombs, wood, bone, cork etc. These materials possess a unique combination of properties such as low thermal conductivitv, low density and high energy-absorption. Foams are a class of cellular solids, generally made by dispersing gas into a liquid material and then cooling it to solidify. They are categorized as open-cell and closed-cell foams. Depending on the solid materials that are made into foams, they are also categorized as polymeric foams, metallic foams, and ceramic foams. Due to developments in material science and manufacturing lechniques, advanced foams have found potential for use in automobile, aircraft, and space vehicle structures. In the paper the comparative study of the hybrid foam microstructures is presented. Hybrid foam is a new, still developed material that is built of the aluminum open cell foam matrix filled with other material (here: elastomer). The numerical models based on cubic geometry in different configurations are developed. The FE analysis of the compression test is curried out. The results are presented and analyzed due to the microstructure geometry influence on the material behaviour.

Polymers found regard among engineers and researcher their special proprieties. Now, we find using the polymers at present in the most advanced technically the branches of industry. In construction of machines, more and more often are practical used hyperdeform materials. The group of construction materials, called hyperdeformable, includes among others: elastomers, plastics made based on rubber, thermoplastic structures, such as polycarbonate, gels and sols, composites and foams: open and closed pores. Porous structures are produced on the basis of different materials, synthetic thermoplastic polymers and thermosetting. The problem of porous materials is taken in many research centres in the world. Porous materials (also called cellular plastics, foam plastics or foamed plastics) include gas phase dispersed in a solid phase of polymeric material. Properties of such systems depend on the properties of the polymer warp and cell structure comprising the gas phase. Approach previously used to anticipate and interpret the behaviour of the hyperdeformable structures, using the theory of hyperelastic materials, does not resolve the issue because it only describes the elastic properties. The article presents an original methodology developed structural identification the viscoelastic properties of hyperdeformable materials, and in particular modern construction materials from the group of plastics and composites of elastomers, foams, etc

Squat is a fundamental motor pattern in everyday activities, e.g. sitting or lifting objects from the ground. One of the reasons for the poor quality of the squat pattern lies in limited mobility. The study assessed the effects of one-off and 4-week squat correction based on the mobility system exercises. The study involved 40 people, divided into a test group (18 women, 2 men, ± 24.6 years) and a control group (10 women, 10 men ± 23.6 years). All participants have been subjected to three tests twice: a deep squat test - according to the FMS ™ concept, the Active Straight Leg Raise test and the "four" test. After the test, four corrective exercises were recommended and the study continued. The subjects from the test group performed the recommended exercises for 4 weeks, 3 times a week. The protocol was repeated for both groups after 4 weeks, according to the same methodology. For the ASLR test and the "four" test, a significant improvement was observed both after a single session and after a 4-week correction program. With the improvement of these ranges, the result in the deep squat test also improved. A statistically significant improvement in the result was obtained in 9 out of 40 people (22.5%) after a single measurement. As a result of a 4-week correction, the improvement of the squat occurred only after repeated correction. The use of corrective exercises in the hip joints may translate into an improvement in the squat pattern.

The introduction of different bioelements into the structure of hydroxyapatite exerts a positive influence on the growth of new bone tissue. One such useful bioelement is silica, which possesses antibacterial properties and also acts as a factor regulating bone mineralization through stimulation of DNA to synthesize osteoblasts. Results of investigations into integration of foam titanium implants (FTI), with rabbit bone are presented. Two groups of implants were investigated: clean titanium implants produced by selective laser melting and FTI coated with a thin film of hydroxyapatite (HA) mixed with 10 wt. % of bioglass (BG) of A2 type (CaO- P2P-SiO2). Analysis of histopathology of implants' integration with bone were performed by staining using the triple chromatographic method of Masson - Goldner, planimetric analysis using the Kruskal - Wallis test, an ANOVA test and microtomography. Application of layers of the type HA+GH showed superior integration with bone than uncoated titanium implants.

β-glucanase is widely used in many fields and has great economic value and development space, but it faces the difficulties of separation and nutrient destruction in the process of industrial production. Foam separation is a simple, mild and efficient adsorption separation technique that enables efficient separation and extraction of β-glucanase. In this study, five single factors(loading volume, pH, separation gas velocity, fermentation loading concentration, surfactant concentration) of foam separation and harvest of β-glucanase produced by Pichia pastoris were studied. The best univariate condition was: 600 mL/min separation gas velocity, loading volume of 200 mL, initial enzyme concentration of 100 g/mL, surfactant concentration of 0.3 mg/mL and pH of 5. Based on the best univariate condition, the optimal separation conditions of β-glucanase were further explored, and the five-factor four-level orthogonal test was designed. From the experimental results, the best separation condition was: 600 mL/min, loading volume of 200 mL, initial enzyme concentration of 100 μg/mL, surfactant concentration of 0.5 mg/mL and pH of 5. Under this separation condition, the enrichment ratio (E) was 0.56 and the recovery rate (R) was 96.01%.

Hyaluronic acid (HA) has important applications in fields of health care products, cosmetics and clinical medical. However, the unique physiological properties of HA make cost of its traditional separation and extraction process relatively high. Foam separation technique has simple, gentle and efficient advantages on the separation of substances with surface activity by using bubbles as the separation medium. In this paper, natural surfactant CocamideBetaine (CAPB) was used as a foaming agent to explore the technology of microscale HA in aqueous solution by foam separation. The optimum process conditions were determined based on the recovery rate and enrichment ratio of HA by single factor and orthogonal experiment: at room temperature, pH = 7, separating air velocity (v) = 350 mL/min, HA concentration (CHA) = 50 mg/L, adding liquid volume (V) = 200 mL, collecting time (tcol) = 10 min, CAPB concentration (CCAPB) = 0.035 g/L. Under these conditions, HA enrichment ratio (E) equals 6.821 and HA recovery rate (R) equals 66.425%.

One of the wastes generated by PT Beton Elemenindo Perkasa is polystyrene foam waste. Processing of this type of waste is still done with open burning so it has an impact on health and the environmental quality degradation. One of the polystyrene foam waste processing technologies is by constructing a combustion furnace equipped with carbon filter. Activated carbon is one of the air filter media that can absorb harmful gases from the combustion process. The purpose of this research is to identify the effectiveness of carbon monoxide (CO) concentration reduction on active carbon contact system using variation of particle size. This research is a kind of an experimental study involving post test with control design. The number of samples was calculated based on the number of treatments and the number of repetitions in the study. This research used 2 kinds of treatment, including 20 mesh and 30 mesh in 9 repetitions. Independent T-Test statistical analysis showed a significant difference (p-value = 0.001) between the variation of particle size of activated carbon and the CO parameters with the average of the most effective reduction percentage on particle-sized active carbon of 30 mesh was 77.95%.
