Opis:
In this study, the effects of grain size refiner addition and various pre-heating mold temperatures on AlSi9 cast alloy microstructure and solidification have been evaluated. For different process conditions, thermal analysis was performed for all samples and cooling curves were established. Important parameters in liquidus and eutectic Si-phase regions have been calculated usingthe first derivative cooling curves. Secondary Dendrite Arm Spacing (SDAS) variation was also determined. Experimental results question the effectiveness of cooling curve parameters in providing the microstructure data as a function of refinement. The present work shows that the effect of grain refiner addition on the value of SDAS was higher when the solidification time was lower. It indicated that the solidification parameters such as nucleation temperatures of α-Al phase, undercooling temperature and total solidification time were affected by grain refinement. It has been found that the addition of grain refiner affect the eutectic phase formation time. However, it has no effect on the eutectic phase morphology.

Opis:
An equation for a binary phase diagram with two eutectic points was deduced from the Van’t Hoff equation. The melting points of hydrazinium nitrate/ nitroguanidine (HN/NQ) samples with different ratios, ranging from 0 to 1 mole fraction, were explored by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The results revealed the presence of two eutectic points in the phase diagram of the HN/NQ binary system. The dependence of temperature on the composition (T-X phase diagram) of HN/NQ was depicted based on the equation described by the DSC data. The phase diagram of MeNQ/HN, with only one eutectic point was constructed by substituting experimental data of the compositions and their corresponding temperatures into the Van’t Hoff equation. The phase diagram with two or more eutectic points indicated the formation of new stable compounds with appropriate ratios of the two components; no new substance appeared in the system with only one eutectic point. Thus, the HN/NQ binary system showed the presence of a new substance, which is probably the HN/NQ co-crystal. No new substance was detected in the MeNQ/HN binary system. The results of the X-ray diffraction patterns agree with the findings from the phase diagrams.

Opis:
In this paper, the deviation from eutectic composition in boundary layer for eutectic growth is studied by phase-field method. According to a series of artificial phase diagram, the lamellar eutectic growth of these alloy is simulated during directional solidification. At steady state, average growth velocity of eutectic lamella is equal to the pulling velocity. With the increasing of the liquidus slope of β phase, the average composition in boundary layer would deviate from eutectic composition and the deviation increases. The constitutional undercooling difference between both solid phases caused by the deviation increases with the increasing of the deviation. The β phase would develop a depression under the influence of the deviation.

Opis:
We have utilized a phase-field model to investigate the evolution of eutectic silicon in Al-Si alloy. The interfacial fluctuations are included into a phase-field model of two-phase solidification, as stochastic noise terms and their dominant role in eutectic silicon formation is discussed. We have observed that silicon spherical particles nucleate on the foundation of primary aluminum phase and their nucleation continues on concentric rings, through the Al matrix. The nucleation of silicon particles is attributed to the inclusion of fluctuations into the phase-field equations. The simulation results have shown needle-like, fish-bone like and flakes of silicon phase by adjusting the noise coefficients to larger values. Moreover, the role of primary Al phase on nucleation of silicon particles in Al-Si alloy is elaborated. We have found that the addition of fluctuations plays the role of modifiers in our simulations and is essential for phase-field modeling of eutectic growth in Al-Si system. The simulated finger-like Al phases and spherical Si particles are very similar to those of experimental eutectic growth in modified Al-Si alloy.

protrusion of leading phase
Opis:
The current work is dedicated to the mathematical description of a protrusion of the leading phase (cementite) over the wetting phase (austenite) observed during the author’s experiments in previous articles. A cementite protrusion is confirmed in the directionally solidified Fe-4.25% C eutectic alloy. The protrusion is defined due to the mass balance fulfilment. A coordinate system is attached to the solid/liquid interface, which is moving with the constant growth rate v.

Opis:
Some structure observations for the Zn-Ti0.2Cu0.15 single crystal obtained by the Bridgman method are presented. The structure contains (Zn) - phase with inclusions of Zn16Ti inter-metallic compound. The Zn16Ti intermetallic compound is localized within the eutectic precipitates. A morphology of the Zn16Ti compound varies according to the solidification condition imposed during the single crystal growth. The block, great size particles are a characteristic element for the alloy which composition is situated nearly the eutectic point in the phase diagram. These particles were not observed previously in the hypoeutectic Zn-Ti alloys. Mechanical properties of the obtained single crystals are also investigated. Critical resolved shear stress (CRSS) during deformation in a basal slip system (0001)<11-20>is determined. The changes of the CRSS for the Zn-Ti.0.2Cu0.15 single crystals within the range of temperatures from 200K to 370K are presented. The obtained data are compared with previously investigated results for the (Zn) single crystals containing lower (hypoeutectic) titanium addition.
W pracy przedstawiono wyniki badań strukturalnych i mechanicznych monokryształów Zn-Ti0.2Cu0.15 otrzymanych metodą Bridgmana.

Opis:
In order to determine the leading phase of the Fe - 4.25% C eutectic alloy, the method of directional crystallization, which allows to study the character of the solid / liquid growth front, was used. Examined eutectic was directionally solidified with a constant temperature gradient of G = 33,5 K/mm and growth rate of v = 125 μm/s (450 mm/h). The Bridgman technique was used for the solidification process. The sample was grown by pulling it downwards up to 30 mm in length. The alloy quenched by rapid pulling down into the Ga-In-Sn liquid metal. The sample was examined on the longitudinal section using a light microscope and scanning electron microscope. The shape of the solid/liquid interface and particularly the leading phase protrusion were revealed. The formation of the concave – convex interface has been identified in the quasi-regular eutectic growth arrested by quenching. The cementite phase was determined to be a leading phase. The total protrusion d is marked in the adequate figure.
