Opis:
The current labor market requires dynamic and broadly competent university graduates. An international trend is to promote the teaching of transversal competences. These are not only related to a particular study program or future profession, but are universally applicable in different professions, thus promoting job mobility and flexibility of persons. This is a system of competence-based learning. Universities are currently undergoing paradigmatic changes in the university education system. The paper monitors international and home experiences and recommendations for the development of the competences that prepare graduates for life in society. It specially examines the position of the students´ social and ethical competences. These findings are compared with the results of own research focused on the development of students' ethical competences through the Professional Ethics course at EF UMB.

Opis:
The article deals with several issues related to the concept of happiness that emerge from Plato’s triptych: the Gorgias, the Republic and the Laws. The focus is on (1) the question of the alleged overcoming of the eudaimonistic imperative, i.e., natural human pursuit of happiness, in the didactic message of the Republic; (2) the question of to what extent the path of cognition ending in the contemplation of the perfect being is at the same time a strive for the supreme happiness; (3) the dilemma of choosing between a reductive and a cumulative model of complete satisfaction in human life; and finally (4) the problem of affiliative conditions of full life satisfaction.

Opis:
In the article the author rejects traditional, logical interpretation of the famous“Is-Ought Paragraph” from David Hume’s A Treatise of Human Nature. He argues that most of the interpreters failed to grasp the wide philosophicalbackground of the IsOP, which is, generally speaking, a passionate discussionbetween ethical rationalists and ethical anti-rationalists in the 17th and 18thcentury British philosophy. The author shows that the Hume’s main aim inthe IsOP is to strengthen his previous arguments against ethical rationalismand to reinforce (and not subvert at all) the common-sense (vulgar) systems ofmorality, likewise he did in the first book of the Treatise… in case of the theoryof knowledge. The author argues that there is no putative thesis of logic in theIsOP, which some scholars call “Hume’s Law”.

Opis:
In this paper, I present Christine Korsgaard’s style of building a conception of animal rights protection based on a concept of Kantian provenance, namely “end in itself”. Considering that an end in itself in Immanuel Kant’s philosophy includes only human beings, the American philosopher needed to modify (extend) the meaning of the abovementioned concept. This study aims at showing this change of the meaning in categories derived from Fregean semantics (sense and reference). Moreover, I will attempt to prove that by broadening the extension of “end in itself” Korsgaard uses a strategy called ethical extensionism and situates the revised (naturalized) categorical imperative ipso facto within environmental ethics. I start with elucidating Korsgaard’s views on the meaning of “end in itself” before she took interest in animal rights (set out mainly in Kant’s Formula of Humanity and The Sources of Normativity) and then I synthetically describe her animal rights philosophy with a special regard to the category of “natural good”. The second part of the article explains the methodology used in the paper, while the last part is intended to be an interpretation of Korsgaard’s thought.

Opis:
The aim of the article is to describe the moral obligation in the context of the pediatric palliative care. The practical aim is to answer the question about proper attitude of the family and the medical staff toward a dying child. The answers take into account the right of the child to the truth about his or her physical state, the possibility of taking part in the decision making process and the spiritual care of the dying children. The theoretical reflections are confronted with the empirical survey among the Warsaw physicians. The answers for the twelve questions of the questionnaire illustrate the practice of the doctors who deal with the sick children and their families.
