Opis:
Taxus baccata L. is a relict plant and has a scattered distribution in the entire species range. Yew regeneration may be affected by moisture conditions and tree stand characteristics – variables which change over time and which have not been sufficiently researched to date. The present study determined the size structure of yews, causes of yew mortality, the effects of tree stand characteristics and habitat conditions on yew diameter increment at breast height, the density of yew seedlings and saplings, and the likelihood of yew seedling occurrence. The study was conducted in central Poland, on 22 permanent sampling plots. The paper presents data col- lected in 2017 with reference to previous studies on these plots from 2001 and 2007. Stand volume, basal area, number of trees, canopy cover, and type of forest site were established for the tree layer. Saplings and shrubs were counted. Finally, the parameters determined for yew seedlings included density and percentage of individuals damaged by browsing, as well as soil moisture and percentage cover of herbaceous vegetation in the nearest neighborhood. In 2017, yew density in the tree layer was 70 individuals/ha, having increased by 15 individuals/ha over 16 years. During that period, 6.4 individuals/ha died in that layer. The predominant cause of yew mortality was wind. In the period 2007–2017, the mean diameter increment at breast height was 2.2 mm/year, and indicated a weak relationship only with tree diameter at the beginning of the studied period (R2 = 0.06). In 2017, the mean density of yew saplings and seedlings was 55 individuals/ha and 1005 individuals/ha, re- spectively. Two independent variables were found to be significant in the model of yew seedling occurrence: presence of mature yews on the sampling plot and soil moisture. The condition of the studied yew population is satisfactory, especially in the less moist areas. The number of seedlings is acceptable, but more active protection should be considered due to the scarcity of yew sap- lings. This is all the more important as seed-producing mature yews tend to die as a result of exposure to strong winds and periodic local flooding.

Opis:
English yew is one of the most endangered species in Europe. Due to the specificity of this species, its natural regeneration is quite difficult. The aim of the study was to present the current situation of distribution, protection and restoration of the species in Ukraine. The study presents some characteristics of largest natural and artificial yew populations in the country and their protection. In situ and ex situ yew populations are quite different, in terms of bioclimatic conditions what does not affect to the growth characteristics of the populations. In addition, the activities related to the natural and artificial renaturalisation of the yew were analysed. Thus, tending of tree stands, where the natural regeneration of yew was inventoried can be recommended but it should be planned very individually regarding requirements of the site. The introduction of yew seedlings in the conditions of the managed forest is very difficult. Despite the complication of obtaining planting material and high cost, it is important measure to preserve the species. In Ukraine are successful examples of the seed transfer of yew populations by about 450 km in North-East direction (Carpathian yew population) and 700 km in North direction (Crimean yew population). It is an evidence of high ecological plasticity of the species. Moreover, some recommendations that could be useful for increasing the popularization of this species throughout the country were given in conclusions. The wider use of yew in public areas across the country due to unique value of species and more convenient protection of young seedlings. It is worth to continue the inventory of yew locations at the national level and study the possibilities to use as local sources to conservation of this species throughout the country.

Opis:
English yew (Taxus baccata L.) is a rare tree species in Austria and gene conservation forests reserves are used to maintain English yew populations by silvicultural treatments. This paper describes the current situation of an English yew population at “Stiwollgraben”in Austria with regard to stand structure, vitality and natural regeneration. The area is one of the most important sites in Austria as it consists of 2236 yews. The vitality condition of the yew is very good, and more than 79% of the yews have been assessed as very vital to vital. The potentiality for natural regeneration (13019 one-year seedlings ha–1) is very high, but not all height classes are represented. This indicates a high survival ability of English yew at this site. Three different treatment strategies are described to maintain the yew population. The future effects of these treatments are discussed in the light of the environmental requirements of English yew.

Opis:
English yew is rare and endangered dioecious species. Research on regeneration processes of endangered taxa is important to understand the mechanisms allowing a species to survive under several ecological scenarios, to predict future distribution shifts, to achieve best management practices and conservation policies. Our investigation was focusing on one of the oldest yew population in Europe, in Foresta Umbra in Italy. The main aim of this study was to understand spatial regeneration processes and dynamics related with parent trees’ sex distribution. Geostatistical analysis showed that seedlings occur in patches avoiding direct competition with adult yews. Negative relationship between regeneration and yew density and basal area was found. A general model for the reproductive ecology is proposed: females are less competitive and more environmentally demanding than males, because of their reproductive effort. Indeed, male and female fitness responds differently across environmental gradients, thus favouring spatial segregation of seedlings. Understanding the yew’s adaptive effectiveness is essential to ensure the conservation of existing populations, and encourage the species’ resilience into areas where yew is endangered.

Opis:
The genetic variation is considered to be a key factor for long−term survival of the species. The recognition of the existing genetic diversity is the preliminary phase in development of an effective strategy for conservation of forest tree species gene pools. Taxus baccata L. with a wide but scattered distribution in Europe is an example of rare and endangered species that needs both ex situ and in situ protection. The increase in fragmentation and isolation of populations and reduction in effective population size can cause erosion of the gene pool through increased genetic drift, increased inbreeding, reduced gene flow and decreased migration rate. As a result, local populations may be responsible for the loss of genetic variation, hence a decrease in their viability and adaptability. A few genetic analyses based on isozymes and DNA markers indicate that the yew, both in Poland and in other regions of Europe, is characterized by high levels of genetic variation within populations and moderate genetic differentiation between populations.
