Opis:
Using femtosecond laser lithography technique, we have fabricated 3D PhC structures having woodpile and spiral architectures in photoresists, and investigated their photonic properties. The fabricated structures exhibit good structural quality, evidenced by long-range periodicity and absence of deformations, and photonic stop-gaps at nearinfrared and infrared wavelengths, evidenced by spectral bands of high reflectivity. These structures can be used as templates for further enhancement by infiltration of metals or high refractive index materials, such as Si.

Thanks to the transfer matrix method, we perform a theoretical investigation of the optical properties of the symmetrical photonic crystal designed as Bg5/Cu1/Bg5, where Cu1 is the first generation of the copper mean sequence and Bg5 is the fifth generation of the Bragg sequence. We design a developed polychromatic filter which allows the transmission of all the telecommunication wavelengths 0.85, 1.3, and 1.55 µm at oblique incidence for both of TE and TM polarization with a high transmission rate and high quality factor. This photonic crystal can be employed in the fabrication of telecommunication devices.

InP and GaAs crystal structure changes under the influence of swift Kr and Bi ions have been studied by means of scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy and selective chemical etching. The previous disordering of samples by electron irradiation has shown to lead to macrodefect formation in the form of cracks and breaks, at the depths near the ion end-of-range, and on the crystal surface. A possible explanation of the observed effects is proposed.

Polymer Stabilized Liquid Crystals
Opis:
In this research study on liquid crystalline materials mixed with other compounds, specifically with monomers, is presented. Research covers measurements of the refractive indices and the attenuation constant of the polymer stabilized liquid crystals (PSLCs). The latter are specific type of mixture, containing liquid crystal together with less than 10% weight concentration of the monomer and UV-sensitive activator. In this sense, the variety of available liquid crystals and monomers, gives a huge number of different mixtures that can be potentially obtained [1]. Each combination of particular compounds and their weight ratios, results in different physical properties of the mixture, so knowledge about, how each of these factors influences the final product, is fundamental. PSLCs, thanks to their tunable properties, provide wide range of potential applications in integrated optics as e.g. varifocal lenses, sensors, waveguiding layers, etc., but first their optical parameters have to be examined in detail [2, 3].
W niniejszym artykule przedstawiono badania nad ciekłymi kryształami połączonymi z innymi materiałami, w szczególności z monomerami. Badania obejmują pomiary współczynników załamania oraz współczynnika tłumienia w ciekłych kryształach stabilizowanych polimerem (ang. PSLC). PSLC to rodzaj mieszaniny, w której skład, oprócz ciekłego kryształu, wchodzi mniej niż 10% wagowego stężenia monomeru oraz śladowe ilości aktywatora optycznego. Biorąc pod uwagę różnorodność związków ciekłokrystalicznych i monomerów, można uzyskać ogromną liczbę mieszanin o różnych właściwościach fizycznych [1]. Znajomość tychże właściwości jest kluczowa w kontekście praktycznego zastosowania mieszanin PSLC. Mieszaniny tego typu, dzięki możliwości uzyskania związku o konkretnych właściwościach fizycznych i chemicznych, można zastosować w optyce zintegrowanej, np. do zmiennoogniskowych soczewek, czujników, jako warstwy falowodowe itp., jednak zanim to nastąpi, należy szczegółowo zbadać i wyznaczyć ich parametry optyczne [2, 3].

Opis:
The use of periodic structures as noise abatement devices has already been the object of considerable research seeking to understand its efficiency and see to what extent they can provide a functional solu- tion in mitigating noise from different sources. The specific case of sonic crystals consisting of different materials has received special attention in studying the influence of different variables on its acoustic performance. The present work seeks to contribute to a better understanding of the behavior of these structures by implementing an approach based on the numerical method of fundamental solutions (MFS) to model the acoustic behavior of two-dimensional sonic crystals. The MFS formulation proposed here is used to evaluate the performance of crystals composed of circular elements, studying the effect of varying dimen- sions and spacing of the crystal elements as well as their acoustic absorption in the sound attenuation provided by the global structure, in what concerns typical traffic noise sources, and establishing some broad indications for the use of those structures.

Opis:
In this article there is discussed a possibility of forming the liquid crystal structure in ionic liquids and its influence on performance characteristics, especially tribological, of these liquids. Formation of such thermal phase might influence on, among other things, easier creation of the boundary lubricating film, which is characterized by high viscous anisotropy. The results of tribological tests showed better lubricity of selected ionic liquids than modern PFPE oils. Identification of mesophase in ionic liquids was necessary. This method is described in the paper. Biolar PL polarizing interference microscope with thermal stabilizing table, with birefraction system, and Brüker Discover 8 powder diffraction instrument with a Cu lamp and monochromator were used. There was being searched the state characterized simultaneously by optical anisotropy properties and liquid state of aggregation. For identification of phase transition temperature, the additional calorimetric tests were carried out during the cycle of heating and cooling. These researches were carried out within the framework of the development and research project no. PBR 15-249/2007/WAT-OR0002904, financed by Ministry of Science and Higher Education during 2007-2011.

A novel homologous series R0-C6H4.CH:N-C6H4.CO.CH:CH-C6H4-OC6H13(n) of liquid crystal property is synthesized and studied with a view to understand and establish the effect of molecular structure on liquid crystal properties with respect to Schiff base and chalconyl central bridges as well as changing left n-alkoxy terminal and right n-hexyloxy fixed tail ended group. Homologous series consisted of eleven (C1 to C16) homologues in which the nematogenic mesomorphism commences from C3 homologue and continued to last C16 homologue without exhibition of smectogenic property. Rest of the C1 and C2 homologues are nonmesomorphic, whose Latent transition temperature (LTT) are predicted by extrapolation of N-I transition curves. Odd-even effect is observed for N-I transition curve. N-I transition curve and Cr-N/I transition curve behaved in normal manner. The Nematic thermal stability is 72.2 ° C. The minimum and maximum nematogenic mesophaselengths are ranging between 12.0 °C and 30.0 °C at C16 and C14 homologue respectively. Transition temperatures were determined by an optical polarizing microscopy (POM), equipped with a heating stage. Thermal analytical and spectral data confirms the molecular structures of homologues. The novel homologous series of chalconyl Schiff’s base is low melting series, whose mesogenic transition temperatures ranges between 43.0 °C and 79.0 °C.

Opis:
In this paper, we consider a hybrid photonic crystal symmetrically deformed (Bg5/Cu3/Bg5) consisting of the third generation of the copper mean sequence (Cu3), sandwiched between two Bragg mirrors at the fifth generation (Bg5). Our system realizes a polychromatic filter that transmits five wavelengths in the visible spectrum independently of the polarization of the light transverse electric or transverse magnetic. Secondly, the photonic crystal (Bg5/Cu3/Bg5) undergoes the deformation y = xk + 1 (where k is the degree of deformation, x and y are respectively the coordinates of the system before and after the deformation). With a proper choice of the degree of deformation k, this photonic crystal maintains its property of polychromatic filter whose transmission wavelength is independent of the polarization’s state. Thanks to this deformation, we can disperse the optical windows in different spectra of visible light and exactly in the violet, blue, green, and orange light. This system can be used in the fabrication of color filter devices and the white light emitting diodes.

We investigate the evanescent field of a microfiber wrapped by colloidal crystals. The microfiber has the diameter of about 1 μm that is drawn from a single-mode fiber with an alcohol lamp. The colloidal spheres are further attached to the microfiber through thermal evaporation, then they self-assemble to crystal-like structures. The 400 nm, 590 nm, and 710 nm-diameter SiO2 colloidal spheres are used, respectively. The spectral responses are studied theoretically and experimentally, and the results agree with each other. It is revealed that the evanescent field of a microfiber could be modulated by the photonic band-gap of colloidal crystals. This characteristic is very useful in refractive index sensing for liquids.

Positron annihilation studies of liquid crystals are reviewed with particular reference to thermotropic liquid crystals with rod-like molecules. The studies of compounds exhibiting smectic A or smectic E phases indicate that local arrangement of dipole molecules play an important role because high electron density at the end group of molecules can influence substantially formation and annihilation of positronium. The obtained ortho-positronium lifetimes in these phases can be explained by antiparallel pairing of molecules in case of the smectic A phase or a structure with a nanosegregation of alkyl chains and others parts of molecules into sublayers and liquid-like state of alkyl chains in case of the smectic E phase.
