Opis:
This paper discusses problems involved in the translation of literary works that apply linguistic varieties, especially geographical dialects. It surveys selected approaches to the functions of dialects in literature and to the strategies of dealing with linguistic variation in translation, arguing that the understanding of the issue may be deepened and systematized by applying notions drawn from relevance theory. The use of dialect in literary texts is interpreted as a communicative clue and the translators’ approach to its rendering is described with reference to the cognitive environment of the recipients and the balance of processing effort and communicative gain. Examples are drawn from the Polish translations of The Secret Garden by F.H. Burnett, the oldest coming from 1917 and the newest from 2012, which highlight the translators’ changing assumptions on the recipients’ cognitive environment reflected in the choice of the strategy of dialect rendition.

Opis:
Contemporary national security systems face many challenges related to the changes taking place in the security and operating environments. Cognitive warfare, listed as one of such challenges, is often described as “the struggle for hearts and minds” because in cognitive warfare it is the human mind that becomes the battlefield. The aim of the paper is to identify and explore the key assumptions of cognitive warfare. The research process is focused on the following study questions: (1) What are the characteristics of cognitive warfare? (2) How can cognitive operations build an advantage over a competitor? (3) How to build resilience to cognitive operations? The analysis is based on the data collected with the use of the method of narrative literature review. Moreover, the authors’ participatory observations and lessons from national and international military research projects contributed to understanding and discussing the gist of cognitive warfare.

Military wireless tactical systems has faced the problem of limited spectrum resources. This is a reason why Cognitive Radio (CR) is one of the most popular topic studied by research institutes in the field of mobile telecommunications. CR technology is based on cognitive cycle, used for making decisions based on observation and orientation. To support this activity, radios need also information on current position, electromagnetic situation, legal issues etc. These functions can be provided by Radio Environment Map (REM) database. It enables more flexible spectrum utilization and coexistence of Primary and Secondary Users (PUs, SUs) without harmful interferences. This paper presents a proposal of REM database structure and graphical user interface (GUI). It also describes GUI implementation in MATLAB and data structure. Database was implemented using the database engine - SQLite. The proposed REM database is a part of cognitive radio network simulator developed in the Institute of Telecommunications.

Opis:
In this paper, we propose a novel framework for unknown environment planning of manipulator type robots. Unknown environment motion planning, by its nature, requires a sensor based approach. The problem domain of unknown environment planning, when compared to model based approaches, is notoriously harder (NPHARD) in terms of demanding technical depth especially for difficult cases. The framework we propose herein is a sensor based planner composed of a sequence of multiple MBPs (Model Based Planners) in the notion of cognitive planning using realtime rehearsal. That is, one can use a certain model based planner as a tactical tool to attack location specific problems in overall planning endeavor for an unknown environment. The enabling technology for the realtime rehearsal is a sensitive skin type sensor introduced in the paper. We demonstrate the feasibility of solving a difficult unknown environment problem using the introduced sensor based planning framework.

Opis:
The challenge for psychology is to integrate findings from genetics and environmental (social, biological, chemical) factors, into the study of human behavior and deep understanding of the emergence of different changes in the anatomy, physiology, and chemistry of the nervous system that influence the mental health. Currently, cognitive abilities associated with learning and memory, reasoning, problem solving, and developing relationships are in scope of molecular psychology, which is the study of behavior and its underlying brain systems using the tools of molecular biology. However, studies have demonstrated that DNA sequence variations and rare mutations account for only a small fraction of the risk for inheritance of personality traits and mental illness. The large unaccounted heritability of personality traits and mental health suggest that additional molecular and cellular mechanisms are involved. Various complex gene-environment interactions can lead to different phenotypes. These structural changes may be crucial for the development of mature neural networks that support emotional, cognitive, and social behavior. The generation of different morphology, physiology, and behavioral outcomes from a single genome in response to changes in the environment forms the basis for phenotypic plasticity, which is fundamental to the way organisms cope with environmental variation, navigate the present world, and solve future problems. Epigenetics has major implications for psychology and gives the new answer for the old question- what is the biochemical basis of learning. It is bringing back the leading role of environment and behavior, by including their effects on genome function. In addition, it opens up the possibility of memory being stored in the epigenome, so that our experiences may be embedded in our genome by epigenetic mechanisms. Epigenetics can be described as the study of the complex interactions underlying the development of an organism over its lifetime.

The aim of this paper is to discuss a very initial stage of architectural design. To achieve that, the way architects work at the early phase of design task is taken into consideration. For the purpose of analysing the process, two groups of designers are distinguished, viz.: novice and familiar with digital media. A few experiments are described in order to reveal a process of creative thinking and, what is more, to point out a hybrid analogue-digital environment as a preferred setting to study and deal with a design problem. However, it is difficult to assign the act of creation itself to certain rules and methodologies since it seems to exist somewhere beyond – elusive and unpredictable.

A visual-visual dual computer task was designed to test the effect of the thermal environment on dual task performance. The temperatures selected for testing were 20 and 35 °C Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT). 34 volunteers were randomly assigned to 1 of the 2 temperature conditions. Individual differences in single task performance were controlled by equating the baselines of single task performance. Once individual differences in single task capacity were con-trolled, statistically significant differences in performance were demonstrated. Mean Accuracy was computed over a 1-hr testing period in each temperature condition. Participants’ mean accuracy in the 35° condition (38.18%) was substantially lower than in the 20° condition (50.88%).

Opis:
The effect of organismic variable age on human cognitive performance was studied under the impact of vibration in different automobile driving environments, namely city streets, rural roads and highways. Reaction time was measured in milliseconds through a human response measurement system specifically designed for the purpose. Results of the study showed that age had a significant effect in city street and rural road conditions. It was also found that the level of equivalent acceleration of vibration and a difficulty index significantly affected cognitive performance in all driving conditions. The organismic variable age observed to have a significant effect on task performance implied that youngsters and older people are stressed differently in specific environments of driving so proper stress management strategies should be evolved for them in order to minimize the number of accidents.
