Opis:
Following paper presents a new aspect of the study of submerged landscapes in the Szczecin Lagoon. This aspect is the importance of coastal processes for the conservation status of the sites and archaeological contexts. Underwater prospection can lead to collection of archaeological material of an entirely different character. These artifacts may in fact come from the destroyed land erosion processes (abrasion), and so – in terms of methodology of archeology – lie on the secondary deposit. Of course, cognitive value of such sources is very different than artifacts found in full context. However, there is possibility to use them not only to study archeology, but to assess the scale, pace and extent of coastal phenomena perceived as post-depositional processes.

Opis:
The development of the coastal zone of the eastern Gulf of Finland has a long geological history and depends on the several main factors. The primary configuration of the shoreline is connected with tectonic movements, which even at present are displayed in slow uplifting of the northern coast and slow sinking of the southern one. However, the main features of the recent coastal zone were formed during degradation of the last glacial cover and essentially transformed during post-glacial period of different water bodies’ existence. The processes of the modern morpho- and litho-dynamic are very changeable and expressed in the different accumulative and erosion forms of relief. The anthropogenic activity during last centuries results in local reconstruction of the conditions of existence and development of the coastal zone.

Opis:
The Curonian Spit is one of the largest Holocene sand accumulation forms, stretching along the Baltic Sea coast and belonging to the Baltic sand belt. This article deals with the dynamics of the Curonian Spit dunes in the context of global climate change. Investigations were carried out in the environs of two high dunes (Parnidis Dune and Naglis Dune) over a period of 10 years (2003-2014). Levelling of cross-sections was performed using modern geodesic devices. Wind velocities and directions were measured at meteorological stations of Klaipeda and Nida. The wind regime (number of days with winds >15 m/s) was almost at the multiannual average during the study period. Sand moisture was measured in both dunes studied, and groundwater level was measured in the environs of the Naglis Dune by using ground penetrating radar (GPR). The Naglis Dune experienced a more significant lowering (by 4-6 m) compared with the Parnidis Dune over the study period, while sand deficit was greater in the Parnidis Dune (~10,000 m3). Compared with other European sand dune systems, the Curonian Spit dunes have undergone strong degradation. The article highlights possible degradation reasons and indicates the necessity of additional investigations. Only long-term investigations can contribute to disclosing the main processes both as natural background and due to anthropogenic activities, and the devising of protection measures.

Opis:
Between 2001 and 2016 the influence of diversified share of arable land in the catchment areas of Lake Długie (5.5% of arable land) and Lake Głębokie (73.5% of arable land) on the biochemical processes in shoreline soils was researched in five-year measurement cycles. The research chiefly encompassed the biochemical processes of conversion of nitrogen and phosphorus compounds (phosphatase, urease and protease activity). Simultaneously, the content of mineral nitrogen and assimilable forms of phosphorus in the shoreline soils of both lakes was investigated. During the observations the enzymatic activity in the Lake Długie shoreline soil was significantly greater than in the soil surrounding the shore of Lake Głębokie. However, the catchments areas of both lakes were characterised by similar changes in the enzymatic activity of shoreline soils. Between 2001 and 2006 the enzymatic activity in the soils under study was similar and exhibited a slight increasing tendency. In the consecutive measurement cycles (2011 and 2016) the activity of the enzymes decreased significantly. It was strictly correlated with the increasing content of nitrogen and phosphorus compounds in the soils surrounding both lakes. The biochemical and chemical indicators under analysis clearly point to rapid eutrophication in the shoreline habitats around Lakes Długie and Głębokie.
W latach 2001-2016, w 5-letnim cyklu pomiarowym, badano wpływ zróżnicowanego udziału gruntów ornych w zlewniach Jeziora Długie (5.5% gruntów ornych) i Jeziora Głębokie (73.5% gruntów ornych) na procesy biochemiczne w glebach strefy przybrzeżnej. Badaniami objęto procesy biochemiczne związane głównie z przemianami związków azotu i fosforu (aktywność fosfataz, ureazy i proteaz). Równolegle oznaczano zawartość azotu mineralnego i przyswajalnych form fosforu w glebach przybrzeżnych obydwu jezior.

Opis:
During the Early Miocene (Early Burdigalian/Eggenburgian) marine transgression at the southeastern margin of the Bohemian Massif, gradual flooding occurred along a rocky coast on granitic bedrock of the Thaya Batholith under high-energy, wave-dominated, microtidal and mixed fair-weather and storm conditions. Deposits of the Burgschleinitz Formation overlie a basal unconformity above a subaerial weathered basement surface (transgressive erosional surface) and are interpreted as a transgressive systems tract. The deposits can be divided into four facies associations/depositional environments, i.e., upper-shoreface, foreshore, gravelly beach and backshore/lagoon. Two stages of transgression and successive overtopping of the basement, with different coastal physiographies, were documented. During the initial stage of transgression a barrier island system developed with relatively fine-grained deposits, reflecting the flooding of the distant parts of the Thaya Batholith with a relative flat basement morphology. The subsequent continuation of the transgression led to the flooding of the more proximal parts of the Thaya Batholith with a steeper relief and formation of a rocky shoreline with deposition of gravelly sedi- ments along palaeo-sea cliffs or wave-cut platforms. While gravel clasts of the deposits investigated originate directly from the underlying granites of the Thaya Batholith, provenance studies show that metamorphic rocks of the Moravian Superunit in the hinterland were the main source of sands. This distant source material was probably delivered mainly by small creeks and alluvial fans to the nearshore. Significant differences in heavy mineral composition of the same formation in the wider vi cinity indicate primarily local sources and rapid deposition with subordinate longshore transport, which may reflect a complex coastal palaeogeography. The Lower Miocene deposits of the Burgschleinitz Formation investigated are a rare example of ancient rocky shore deposits, which generally have low preservation potential in the geological record.
