Opis:
Effect of growing media on macro- and microelements, as well as on chlorophyll concentration in Phalaenopsis orchids were investigated. In the years 2006–2008, an experiment on Phalaenopsis orchids cultivation was carried out. The plants were planted into New Zealand sphagnum moss, mixture of expanded clay pellets and New Zealand sphagnum moss (v:v = 1:1), or into expanded clay pellets only. Orchids were grown in translucent plastic pots. Total macro and micro elements concentration in leaves and roots were determined. Furthermore concentrations of chlorophyll a and chlorophyll b in leaves and roots were measured. Growing media exert a significant influence on the nutritional status of Phalaenopsis orchids. The highest concentration of magnesium, iron and copper was found in plants grown in expanded clay, less in orchids grown in the mixed medium and the least in plants grown in sphagnum moss. A higher concentration of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium and manganese was found in leaves. Inversely, in roots, there was a higher concentration of magnesium, iron and zinc. Growing media did not affect chlorophyll concentration in leaves and roots of Phalaenopsis.
Do badań dotyczących wpływu podłoży na zawartość składników pokarmowych oraz chlorofilu w liściach i korzeniach storczyka Phalaenopsis wybrano odmiany ‘Springfield’ i ‘Zagreb’. W roku 2006 rośliny sadzono do następujących podłoży: mech torfowiec (New Zealand sphagnum moss), mieszanka mchu torfowca z keramzytem (v:v = 1:1) oraz w keramzyt o granulacji 8–16 mm. Początkowo (8,5 miesiąca) storczyki rosły w doniczkach o średnicy 7 cm, następnie w przeźroczystych pojemnikach o średnicy 11 cm i pojemności 0,5 dm3. Raz na dwa tygodnie rośliny dokarmiano pożywką o składzie: N-NH4 – 100; N-NO3 – 120; P – 40, K – 230; Ca – 30; Mg – 20; Na – 10; Cl – 20; S-SO4 – 40; Fe – 0,8; Mn – 0,4; Zn – 0,2; Cu – 0,07; B – 0,2 mg·dm-3; pH 6,6; EC – 1,8 mS·cm-1. W roku 2008 (stadium kwitnienia) w liściach i korzeniach oznaczono całkowite zawartości makro- i mikroelementów oraz chlorofilu a i b. Podłoża wpływały na stan odżywienia roślin – najwyższą zawartość magnezu, żelaza, miedzi stwierdzono w organach roślin uprawianych w keramzycie, najmniejszą w storczykach uprawianych w mchu torfowcu. Jednocześnie zawartość cynku i manganu była najwyższa w roślinach uprawianych w mchu torfowcu. W liściach stwierdzono wyższą zawartość azotu, fosforu, potasu, wapnia i manganu, natomiast w korzeniach magnezu i żelaza i cynku. Ponadto liście zawierały więcej chlorofilu-a i chlorofilu-b w porównaniu z korzeniami.

A. Camus).
The objective of this study was to recognise plant condition and the intensity of nitrogen fixation in grasses grown in a mixture with legume plants using three different levels of fertilisation with mineral nitrogen and sodium. In experimental plots of an area of 25 m² a mixture of red clover (Trifolium pratense L.) and festulolium (Festulolium braunii (K. Richt.) A. Camus) was sown in 50:50% proportions. The experiment was established in a random block design with two factors: 1) nitrogen fertilisation N1 (100 kg·ha-¹ of ammonium nitrate, 33 kg after each regrowth); N2 (150 kg of ammonium nitrate, 50 kg after each regrowth); N3 (200 kg of ammonium nitrate, 66 kg after each regrowh; 2) sodium fertilization 0 kg·ha-¹, 30 kg·ha-¹, and 60 kg Na ha-¹ (fertiliser - kieserite with KCl - was applied twice in a dose of 30 Na kg ha-¹ before sowing and after the first mowing). The concentration of chlorophyll in plants was determined before each mowing. In the beginning and in the full blooming plant phase, nitrogenase activity was determined directly in the field using the acetylene to ethylene reduction method. It was found that the nitrogenase activity decreased with the increase of nitrogen fertilisation. Positive correlation between nitrogen and sodium fertilisation and the plant condition expressed as chlorophyll content was recorded.

Opis:
Using laboratory cultures of algae and natural phytoplankton populations from Nhatrang Bay (South China Sea), the relationship between the chlorophyll fluorescence F0, the chlorophyll a concentration Ca and light absorption capacities of algae cells was studied. It is shown that the ratio F0/Ca depends mainly on the species composition of the algae population; hence, the concentration Ca can be measured with the fluorescence method with acceptable accuracy only when the species composition of algae populations varies over a rather narrow range. The fluorescence F0 can, however, be a good index of the total absorption capacities of different phytoplankton species, because the intensity of F0 depends on the sum total of light absorbed by all photosynthetic pigments in a plant cell. Thus, the fluorescence F0 measures not only the concentration of chlorophyll a, but that of all photosynthetic pigment concentrations.

Opis:
This study shows the results of long-term inland water monitoring using Sentinel-2 data for Głuszyńskie Lake in the years 2015–2022. Four water quality parameters: biological oxygen demand (BOD), dissolved organic carbon (DOC), chlorophyll concentration (CHL) and electrical conductivity (EC) were calculated according to formulas found in the literature. The results were validated based on measurements conducted in 2021 and 2022, where for BOD, DOC and CHL high determination coefficients (0.77 and 0.79) were observed, and the EC determination coefficient was equal to 0.45. The results show that empirical formulas can be used for qualitative analyses of inland water quality, while for quantitative analyses more extensive field work needs to be performed.

Opis:
The Levantine basin in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea is subject to spatial and seasonal variations in primary production and physical-chemical properties both on a short and long-term basis. In this study, the monthly means of daily MODIS product images were averaged between 2002 and 2015, and used to characterize the phytoplankton blooms in different bioregions of the Levantine basin. The selected products were the sea surface temperature (SST), the chlorophyll-a concentration (Chl-a), the diffuse attenuation coefficient for downwelling irradiance at 490 nm (Kd_490) and the colored dissolved organic matter index (CDOM_ index). Our results showed that phytoplankton blooms were spatially and temporally variable. They occurred in late autumn at the Nile Delta, in early spring and late summer at the eastern coastline, and in spring at the northeastern coastline. The northern coastline and the open water had a common bloom occurring in winter. The Nile Delta was found to be the most productive area of the Levantine basin showing high Chl-a. Kd_490 and Chl-a present a parallel co-variation indicating a dominance of Case 1 waters in the Levantine basin. The CDOM_index shows a phase shift with the Chl-a fluctuation. A strong inverse correlation was observed between both Chl-a and CDOM_index with SST, connoting an indirect relation represented by a depression of CDOM in summer by photobleaching, and a suppression of the chlorophyll-a concentration due to water stratification, together with nutrient stress. An overestimation of the Chl-a values had been signaled by the use of the CDOM_index, suggesting a correction plan in a latter study.

The space-time dynamics of chlorophyll a concentration and seawater excess viscosity has been investigated in the hydrographically contrasting inshore and offshore water masses of the eastern English Channel. This was done during the phytoplankton spring bloom dominated by Phaeocystis globosa before and after the very large-scale formation of foam induced by an increase in wind-driven turbulence and the related wave breakings. The results suggest that the dynamics of chlorophyll a concentration and seawater excess viscosity are differentially controlled by the formation of foam through the intensity of the spring bloom and wind-generated turbulence.

In order to investigate the effect of zinc, iron and manganese fertilization on Zn, Fe and Mn concentrations in the stem and leaves and on the chlorophyll content in leaves of soybean at different reproductive growth stages, two experiments were conducted on a research field of the Islamic Azad University of Kermanshah, Iran, during the 2010 and 2011 growing seasons. The experimental design consisted of a factorial experiment based on the randomized complete block method with three replicates. The treatments included three levels of Zn (0, 20 and 40 kg ha-1), Fe (0, 25 and 50 kg ha-1), and Mn (0, 20 and 40 kg ha-1), all applied to soil. At 30, 60, 90 and 120 days after sowing (DAS), the SPAD readings were done on five leaves from each experimental plot for all replicates. Five plants were randomly selected from each plot at the flowering, pod setting, seed filling and maturity stages. Samples washed with distilled water were dried, weighed and incinerated at 550°C. Finally, the Zn, Fe and Mn concentrations were determined by Atomic Absorption Spectrometry. The results indicated that zinc application had significantly affected Zn, Fe and Mn concentrations in soybean stems at all the sampling times except for the soybean stem Mn concentration at the maturity stage. In contrast, the concentration of Mn at seed filling was unaffected by iron fertilization. Also, the maximum Fe concentration in soybean stems resulting from zinc application was achieved in Zn20 treatment. The highest Zn and Mn concentrations in leaves were recorded when iron was applied in smaller amounts. Furthermore, zinc, iron and manganese applications had significant effects on the leaf chlorophyll concentration during all the growth stages of soybean plants. In addition, increased iron and manganese fertilization raised the soybean leaf chlorophyll concentrations in all the samples. The maximum chlorophyll concentration in soybean leaves at 60 DAS was recorded in Zn20Fe50, Zn20Mn40 and Fe50Mn40 treatments (34.7, 34.0 and 35.2, respectively).

Opis:
This article is the first in a series of three describing the modelling of the vertical different photosynthetic and photoprotecting phytoplankton pigments concentration distributions in the Baltic and their interrelations described by the so-called non-photosynthetic pigment factor. The model formulas yielded by this research are an integral part of the algorithms used in the remote sensing of the Baltic ecosystem. Algorithms of this kind have already been developed by our team from data relating mainly to oceanic Case 1 waters (WC1) and have produced good results for these waters. But their application to Baltic waters, i.e., Case 2 waters, was not so successful. On the basis of empirical data for the Baltic Sea, we therefore derived new mathematical expressions for the spatial distribution of Baltic phytoplankton pigments. They are discussed in this series of articles. This first article presents a statistical model for determining the total concentration of chlorophyll a (i.e., the sum of chlorophylls a+pheo derived spectrophotometrically) at different depths in the Baltic Sea Ca(z) on the basis of its surface concentration Ca(0), which can be determined by remote sensing. This model accounts for the principal features of the vertical distributions of chlorophyll concentrations characteristic of the Baltic Sea. The model’s precision was verified empirically: it was found suitable for application in the efficient monitoring of the Baltic Sea. The modified mathematical descriptions of the concentrations of accessory pigments (photosynthetic and photoprotecting) in Baltic phytoplankton and selected relationships between them are given in the other two articles in this series (Majchrowski et al. 2007, Woźniak et al. 2007b, both in this volume).

Opis:
The study was based on CTD-casts performed on 5 consecutive days at 7 positions along a shallow- to deep-water transect during the spring bloom in the southwest Kattegat. The development, dynamics and fate of the sub-surface chlorophyll maximum (SCM) are described. The SCM developed at a constant rate of 1.4 mg chl a m−3 d−1, which is equal to a carbon fixation rate of 49.0 mgC m−3 d−1. The SCM developed at 6 m depth at low irradiance levels (10–43.0 μE m−2 s−1). Chl a concentrations reached up to 23 mg chl a m−3 in the centre of the SCM. Growth rates in the SCM were estimated at 0.82 d−1. The water column was only weakly stratified, with nutrients in excess in the whole of the water column. The SCM was relocated vertically to depths below the photic zone by wind-induced advection between the bay and the outer Kattegat. There were indications of a horizontal relocation of the SCM by an internal standing wave. Application of high spatial and temporal resolution made it possible to estimate key SCM parameters, such as growth rates [mg chl a m−3 d−1] and carbon fixation rate [mgC m−3 d−1], on the basis of chl a variations in time and space.
