Opis:
The study aimed at assessing the sodium and potassium content in chosen tissues and organs of free-ranging European bisons in Białowieża Primeval Forest depending on the gender and age of animals. In order to determine the content of elements in parenchymal tissues, ribs and hair, the ICP-OES method was used. In the hooves, sodium and potassium were determined with the help of ICP-MS. The sodium content in organs and skin appendages varied from 0.30 in hair to 4.77 mg g-1 in ribs. In the analysis of the age effect, some significant differences were observed between the investigated groups in the sodium content of the hoof wall, namely, a higher mean value was noted in young individuals. The potassium content in the examined samples was within the range of 0.96 in the hoof wall to 3.63 mg g-1 in kidneys. Significant age dependent differences were noted only in the ribs. Sodium and potassium concentrations in the hoof wall were correlated in a highly significant way. Similar dependences also appeared between the content of sodium and potassium in kidneys and liver and kidneys and muscles. On the basis of the results it can be concluded that the status of sodium and potassium supply in the European bison from Białowieża Forest is adequate.

Opis:
The morphology of shell, penis, and female reproductive organs was studied in five populations of Pseudamnicola exilis (Frauenfeld) from southern Peloponnese and Kithira Island (Greece). No interpopulation differences were found in any of the characters. Thirty eight sequences of mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) and nuclear ribosomal 18S RNA genes were analysed. In COI 19 haplotypes, high haplotypy diversity, low nucleotide diversity in each population, and restricted gene flow between populations were found. NCA indicated allopatric fragmentation for all populations, and long-distance colonisation and/or past fragmentation for populations 4 and 5. Mismatch distribution in the most polymorphic population 4 reflected a bottleneck followed by population growth. The values of K2P interpopulation distances, though relatively low, pointed to congeneric distinct species within the Rissooidea. The monophyly of Pseudamnicola/Adrioinsulana clade was confirmed. Most probably the studied populations of Pseudamnicola were part of a flock of vicariant species little differentiated in morphology and ecology, many of which must have disappeared due to human impact.

Opis:
The aim of the study was to evaluate the anatomo- and histopathological lesions in internal organs of sows and their stillborn piglets after experimental Y. enterocolitica infection in different phases of pregnancy. Twelve pregnant sows were divided into 4 groups, infected per os on 33 (n=3), 54 (n=3) and 89 (n=3) day of pregnancy with the pathogenic Y. enterocolitica strain isolated from the aborted swine fetus, and uninfected control group. Histopathological examinations of internal organs and intestine samples of stillborn piglets, slaughtered sows and samples of placentas were performed. Anatomo- and histopathological lesions were the most intense in the group of sows infected in the final phase of pregnancy, where the highest number of stillborn piglets was also found. Lesions of internal organs in stillborn piglets suggested a severe generalized bacterial infection. Although the analysis of experimental Y. enterocolitica infection of pregnant sows revealed that the most intense clinical, anatomopathological and histopathological abnormalities were recorded in the group of animals infected in the final phase of pregnancy. Infection in the first phase of pregnancy could have had an influence on the formation of the granulomatous inflammation. Differences in anatomopathological lesions between infected and control animals suggest that the period of pregnancy in which the infection appears could have had an influence on the course of yersiniosis in pigs.

It was found that the main mechanisms of action of 4-hydroxyphenylpyruvatedioxygenase inhibitors are the development of tyrosinemia and alternations in thyroid hormone level as a result of hepatic enzyme induction. The main target organs of its action are the eyes, liver and thyroid gland. It was proved that the most adequate model for extrapolation of the effects of tyrosinemia on humans are mice, because their tyrosine aminotransferase activity level is similar to that in humans.

Opis:
Owing to its wholesomeness and good taste, meat of goats and lambs is an increasingly more important in human nutrition. It is characterized by excellent nutritive value and high digestibility. It is also relatively rich in mineral compounds. The aim of this study has been to determine the content of some elements in muscles, liver and kidneys of male and felame kid goats, fattened to 150 day of life. The animals received full-ration mixture containing 169 g total protein and 6.0 MJ net energy. The mixture was given ad libitum and supplemented with meadow hay as bulk feed. During the whole period of fattening, the animals were kept under the conventional housing system. Samples for analysis were taken from adductor femoris muscles, liver and kidneys. The muscle tissue of the analysed male goats contained less Cd (0.002 mg kg-1 ± 0.004) than that of the female goats (0.003 mg kg-1 ± 0.001). In turn, the level Pb was lower in the female goats (0.019 mg kg-1 versus 0.026 mg kg-1 in male goats), although the difference was statistically non-significant. In the internal organs, more Cd occurred in kidneys than in the liver, unlike Pb. The concentration Pb was higher in kidneys of the male than female goats (0.073 mg kg-1 ± 0.02), whereas the level of this element the liver was identical in both groups (0.084 mg kg-1 ). In the muscule tissue, the sex differentiated the content of Fe (p = 0.01) as well as Mg and Zn (p = 0.05). The liver accumulated not only Pb and Cd, but also Cu and Zn. The concentration Cu in the liver of female goats was higher (146.79 mg kg-1 at p = 0.01) than in male goats by about 50 mg kg-1. High disproportions between the sexes in the content of Fe in the liver were observed: 36.30 mg kg-1 for female goats and 21.99 mg kg-1 for male goats (p = 0,01). In kidneys, however, the concentration of Ca was very high, particularly for female goats particularly (81.01 ± 26.55 mg kg-1).
Zwierzęta żywiono pełnoporcjową mieszanką o wartości pokarmowej 168 g białka ogólnego i 6,0 MJ energii netto. Mieszankę podawano ad libitum i uzupełniano dodatkiem strukturalnym siana łąkowego. Przez cały okres tuczu zwierzęta utrzymywano w chowie alkierzowym, w pomieszczeniach zamkniętych. Próby do analizy pobrano z mięśnia przywodziciela uda (m. adductor), wątroby i nerek. Zaobserwowano wysokie dysproporcje w zawartości Fe w wątrobie, ponieważ u kózek stwierdzono 36,30 mg kg-1, a u koziołków 21,99 mg kg-1 (p ≤ 0,01). W nerkach wykazano zdecydowanie większe stężenie Ca, szczególnie u kózek (81,01 ± 26,55 mg kg-1).

Opis:
The muscles and internal organs of marine animals contain many proteases. These enzymes fulfill different metabolic functions in the living organisms and affect the sensory quality and functional properties of the catch. Their activity depends on the species, life cycle, and the feeding status of the organism. Many proteases of marine origin differ from their counterparts in terrestrial animals in being more active at lower temperature and less resistant to thermal denaturation. Of practical importance in the industry is their role in ripening of salted fish, fish sauces and marinades, modyfying fish protein concentrates, ensilaging of seafood offal, and deskinning of fishery products. The negative effects comprise mainly the early post morten quality degradation of the catch and deterioration of the rheological properties of fish gels. Proteolytic preparations form different marine sources may be used successfully in food processing and as industrial enzymes, e. g. tanning agents.
