Opis:
In this article, I will sketch a particular way of thinking about existence in time, the consequence of which would be practicing historiography as a response to the voices of the dead coming from the past. This theoretical conception of history tries to understand history not so much as an unfolding process of succession over time but as some community of the living and the dead. If the voices of the dead, defined in terms of spectrality, are to be active somehow in the present, they cannot be prematurely suppressed by gestures of closing the past understood as blocking the transmission of these voices to the future. After analyzing the problem of false closures in history, I am trying to understand spectrality that would combine both past and present activity. The article aims to propose tasks for a historiography that would consist in regaining in con-temporary culture the ability to hear the voice, the gaze, and the expectations coming from the past, present in various forms which can be grasped by an encompassing notion of spectrality. Reflection on spectrality brings us closer to the meaning of the concept of counter‑time.

Analytic philosophy is sometimes understood in opposition to continental tradition. In this article, I would like to show that a Lviv‑Warsaw School shared many fundamental traits with analytic orientation. In afterwar Poland, this tradition clashed with the dialectical materialism that lacks strong scientific tradition but had the full support of the communist party. This situation produced a unique scenario in which the methodology of science could strive as a mainstream area. A crucial role was attributed to the theory of history.

Opis:
Since the so‑called “bodily turn” in the humanities, it may pass as trivial that, as observed by Alva Noë, “experience is not a passive interior state, but a mode of active engagement with the world”. Nevertheless, it seems worth repeating especially that the most direct implication of this thought – that when humans actively engage with the world they do so by moving their physical bodies around – has apparently penetrated much less. This is especially true in the case of academic disciplines involved in the study of the past – history and archaeology – which seem unprepared to investigate past embodiment in a comprehensive manner. Hence, a new methodological proposition is put forth – archaeology of motion. It is inspired by anthropologists and ethnographers’ successful adaptation of participatory observation and auto- ‑ethnography to the study of embodied practices. It makes use of embodied research advocated by Ben Spatz as well as insights from ecological psychology of James J. Gibson and its various off‑shoots in order to propose a positive research programme for studies in past bodily motion. The paper is capstoned with a short account of a case study on a forgotten Polish folk wrestling style where the proposed theory was put into practice.

Ewa Domańska, Professor at the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań (Poland) and Stanford University (USA), historian of historiography and methodologist of history, formulated interesting comments about the state of humanities and social sciences. The development of interdisciplinary research causes the interpenetration of different disciplines. Although this kind of research is promising, inspiring as well as influencing the development of science, careless research may cause some threats in the longer term. According to Domańska, the lack of qualifications and reliability in this area (especially in the area of theory and methodology) undermines the authonomy of the main disciplines and decline in the professionalism of research. This led the author to create the project, which aims to defend the independence of the threatened disciplines as well as their ‘re-professionalisation’. It can be achieved by strongly emphasizing the role of theory in science; a strong embeddement of a discipline in the theory. Domańska’s concept can be a recipe, which is a dichotomic project. Firstly, it supposes a ‘practical methodology’, which is a constructing of the theory thanks to empirical research material. Secondly, it supposes a ‘virtue epistemology’, which is the ethical aspect of the researcher’s attitude and his work. The aim of the paper is to discuss Domańska’s project and underline the originality of her concept in the context of economic and social sciences. The economic history is a specific discipline which develops at the crossroad of history and economics. It lets me put forward the thesis that Domańska’s suggestions are relevant to the research of economic history. I will show what cognitive chances are the result of the ontology of economic history. I will question what the possible threats are for the main disciplines (history and economics) as a result of the lack of professionalism in the interdisciplinary research of the economic past, and ask if Domańska’s project is attractive for the economic history research thanks to the strong setting in the ‘practical methodology’ in the theory. I also ask what the role of new theoretical approaches in that area is, and whether it is possible to formulate innovatory conceptions in the economic history. Finally, I question the role of ‘virtue epistemology’ or the ethical aspect of an economic historian’s work.

Opis:
Ewa Domańska, a distinguished historian of historiography and the methodologist of history, has provided an insightful commentary on the state of humanities and social sciences. The development of interdisciplinary research in social sciences and humanities has resulted in varying outcomes and interpenetrations. Interdisciplinary research helps the development of science. However, studies undertaken with less rigor may pose some threats into the long term. According to Domańska, the lack of qualifications and care (especially with respect to theory and methodology) may undermine the autonomy of a disciplines and the credibility of research in the given field. This timely warning prompted the author to create the project with the aim to assert the independence of the threatened disciplines and to “re-professionalize” these areas of study. This is to be achieved by emphasizing the role of theory in science-a strong embeddedness of a discipline in the theory. Domańska’s concept, in the form of a dichotomous project, seems to be a recipe for achieving this goal. It presupposes, on the one hand, a “practical methodology”, i.e. constructing the theory basing on empirical research material, and on the other hand the so-called “virtue epistemology”, which stresses an ethical aspect of the researcher’s attitude and labour. The aim of the paper is to discuss Domańska’s project and to draw attention to the originality of her concept in the context of economic and social sciences. The economic history is a peculiar discipline founded at the intersection of history and economics. Thus, it is possible to put forward the thesis that Domańska’s suggestions are relevant to the research of economic history. The author will seek to determine what cognitive opportunities arise from the ontology of economic history and their potential threats to the main disciplines of history and economics. The article will also examine if Domańska’s project is appropriate for the economic history research as it is deeply embedded in “practical methodology”, and so in theory. Next, the author aims to consider the role of new theoretical approaches in this field, and whether it is possible to formulate novel concepts within the scope of the economic history. Finally, the author will attempt to assess the significance of “virtue epistemology” or the ethical aspect of an economic historian’s work.

The author poses two questions: Is there anything new that the two World Wars and the Holocaust introduce to the methodology of history or rather to the self-consciousness of history as a scientific discipline? What do these events change in the way we perceive the importance and function of historiography in culture? The article consists of introductory remarks, main text and conclusions. Key considerations are divided into six parts: 1. The First World War and the Turn to Memory, 2. World War Two and the Question about Theory of History, 3. Political Context, 4. The Ethical Turn, 5. Auschwitz, History, and the Power of Judgment, 6. The Hilberg Case. A reconstruction of the methodological consciousness of history is carried out on the basis of the research categories and attitudes proposed by such authors as Habermas, Ricoeur, Jaspers, and Bourdieu. Using some of these ideas, it culminates in the interpretation of Hilberg’s theory of historiography. The ideas are, among other things, the following: critical theory, ethical turn, power of judgment, non-dualistic epistemology and ontology.

The aim of this paper is to partially capture the state of theoretical debate amongst Polish historians on their own discipline in the second half of 20th century. To achieve this we analyse the content of the first twenty five volumes of journal Historyka published in the period when Celina Bobińska was its editor-in-chief (1967–1995). We assume that Historyka – the only journal dedicated to the theory of history and history of historiography – was situated in the centre of exchanges on academic historical practices. We do not treat its content as a reflection of contemporary studies in the theory of history, but as a dominant position in the self-understanding of the discipline competing with other utterances. The paper is a reconstruction of this offer, which is composed of the definitions of subjects of historical studies, descriptions of productive methods, hierarchy of masters of historical writings and their influential books.

Opis:
Zakres artykułu obejmuje analizy idei, postaw twórczych i realizacji architektów związanych z nurtem brutalistycznym. Przeprowadzone badania potwierdziły, że przywiązywali oni dużą wagę do rodzaju materiału budowlanego i sposobu jego użycia. Zafascynowani zwyczajnością i prawdziwym życiem stosowali pospolite materiały, takie jak drewno, kamień, cegła i beton. Tworzywa te były stosowane w stanie surowym, a powierzchnie z nich uzyskane nie podlegały wykończeniu. Materiał budowlany stanowił jednocześnie strukturę i fakturę budynku. Do łask wróciły rzemieślnicze metody budowlane, które wyparły estetykę maszyny. Chropowate, nie pozbawione niedokładności faktury były zaprzeczeniem gładkich modernistycznych powierzchni i symbolizowały szczerość oraz prawdę architektury brutalistycznej. W dojrzałej fazie brutalizmu najbardziej popularne stały się faktury betonowe. Podsumowanie artykułu stanowią szczegółowe wnioski zawarte w dwunastu punktach.
The author of this article presents complex problem of material in brutalist architecture. The main objective is to describe the most important rules of choice of materials and shaping of textures, as well as to present a role and a meaning of texture in brutalism. The scope of the article includes analyses of ideas and buildings of brutalist architects. The researches confirmed that they attached great importance to a kind of building material and a way of using it. Brutalist architects were fascinated by ordinariness and true life, and therefore they preferred common materials, as wood, stone, brick and concrete. These raw materials were used as found and textures were unfinished. Building material was both construction and texture. Craftman’s methods became popular again and replaced aesthetic of the machine. Rough and inaccurate textures were contradiction to smooth and precise surfaces of the International Style and symbolized sincerity and truth of brutalist architecture. The mature phase of brutalism was dominated by brick and especially by concrete, as the material with the best aesthetic character. In the end of this article the author presents detailed conclusions in twelve points.

This article analyses the first traces of postsecular turn in historical theory, arguing that they first emerged in Dominick LaCapra’s book History and Its Limits: Human, Animal, Violence (2009) and in Allan Megill’s subsequent polemic with that work. The author claims that what prevails in LaCapra’s narrative is the rhetoric of “resisting apocalypse”, thus demonstrating how he inscribes postsecular themes with the issue of trauma, together with its religious connotations. The discussion between LaCapra and Megill is treated here as a point of departure for considering the forms that the postsecular can take in historical theory.

Opis:
What is a Medium? At the beginning the author expresses his opinion that there is a national confusion which nowadays prevails about the nation of medium. His explications, in which he reminds his readers about the indirectness of media communication, are of historical character and expose numerous examples of notional abuse. One of the these states that without defining, in the broadest possible way, the notion of medium, which is a crucial one for media studies, it appears tha any systematic scientific reflection is impossible. As a remedy for the notional confusion, acceptance of the realistic definition of medium which was worked out by Werner Faulstich and based on the theoretical concept of Urlich Saxer („media are systems which solve problems”) is suggested. Therefore, that definition, four dimensions of which define the bases of empirical media studies, means the symbolic „patricide” of the main founder of modern media studies Marshall McLuhan and makes empirical, functional history and theory of the media possible.

This article discusses those moments of Jonas Basanavičius’s biography that while being closely connected, in one way or another, with the cultural field of Central Europe also inspired directly Basanavičius’s life and work. When considering the role of Central Europe, one should take into account a very important moment of Basanavičius’ biography, i.e. the time when he lived in Bulgaria for twenty-five years, first in Lom Palanka and Elena, later in Varna. Although physically living in Bulgaria, he was culturally determined by and adopted historical existential experience of Central Europe, considered as a geopolitical zone of Habsburg imperial influence. This experience was clearly reflected in two spheres of Basanavičius’s life: in the national cultural work (historical cultural aspect) and in the medical practice (medical anthropological aspect). Visually speaking, he became a doctor by carefully dissecting Lithuanian history. He became a historian by insistently trying to awake the national memory and language. But if Basanavičius understood medical practice as the field of rational decisions and the application of empirical knowledge, the ancient history became for him the ground of unhindered philological improvisation.
