Opis:
Niniejszy artykuł zawiera empiryczną analizę relacji pomiędzy samoświadomością a depresją. Prezentuje on wyniki badań grupy nieklinicznej (N = 76) oraz klinicznej pacjentów z diagnozą epizodu depresyjnego (N = 15). W badaniach wykorzystano Skalę Samoświadomości (Zaborowski, 1989) oraz kwestionariusz Center for Epidemiological Studies - Depression (Radloff, 1977).
The issue of this article is to examine the relation between forms of self-consciousness and depression. It presents studies of a normal sample of 76 students and clinical sample of 15 patients with depression. Self-consciousness Scale (Zaborowski, 1989) has been used to assess forms of selfconsciousness and Center for Epidemiological Studies - Depression (Radloff, 1977) has been used to measure depression. There are two main goals of the research: 1) distinction of typological groups of healthy controls in context of self-consciousness variables; 2) description of changes in intensity of depressive symptoms in relation to the types of self-consciousness structure differentiated. The cluster analysis has shown 3 types of self-consciousness structures which differ with respect to the all forms of self-consciousness as well as to the level of depressive symptoms. It has also turned out that the most depressive self-consciousness structure differentiated was similar to the one of patients suffering from depression.

The Self-consciousness Scale by A. Fenigstein, M. F. Scheier and A. H. Buss was administered to 100 persons who attempted to commit suicide and to 100 controls. The results lead to following conclusions: 1. Those who tried to commit suicide at least once reveal significantly higher level of public self-consciousness and social anxiety than controls. These persons have also higher level of private self-consciousness. The later is not statistically significant, however. 2. Those after several suicidal attempts have higher level of social anxiety in comparison to persons with only one previous suicidal attempt. There are no differences between these two groups as far as private and public self-consciousness is concerned. 3. There are no differences between men and women who committed suicide in neither of three forms of self-consciousness.

Opis:
D. Wulff (1991) developed a notion of post–critical beliefs as a proposal for the description of religion in the light of the progress of secularization and socio–cultural changes. According to his theory, we can situate(place) potential attitudes toward religion in a two–dimensional space. The vertical dimension stands for Inclusion vs. Exclusion of Transcendence, and the horizontal one—for the way an individual interprets religious content: Literal vs. Symbolic. In this way, the two dimensions determine four quadrants, each reflecting a potential attitude towards religion, operationalized by D. Hutsebaut (1996) in the Post–Critical Belief Scale (PCBS) as: Orthodoxy, External Critique, Relativism and Second Naiveté. The research presented in this paper is our attempt at fi n ding an answer to the question whether the religious attitudes determined by Wulff are related to self–consciousness types. We tested 159 adult individuals by means of the PCBS scale by D. Hutsebaut and the Self–consciousness scale (O–Z scale) by Z. Zaborowski and Z. Oleszkiewicz. The results of these tests are that the refl ective type of self–consciousness correlated positively with Orthodoxy and Second Naiveté and negatively with External Critique and Relativism.

Opis:
Archer (2012) theorized that internal conversation [inner speech] has a mediating role between objective or macroscopic features of social configuration and subjective mental [cognitive] activities. This mediating role is represented by communicative, meta-reflexivity, autonomous, and fractured modes. The literature review reveals that self-regulation may have originated in inner speech. However, it is unclear how different modes of inner speech/conversation can explain and predict self-regulation. To examine this question, 150 students completed measures of self-regulation and inner speech. Students reported lower levels of the fractured mode of inner speech than other modes. Although the meta-reflexivity mode (MRM) had the largest effect size in predicting self-regulation, communicative mode, self-consciousness, and MRM together predicted 41% of variability of self-regulation. As well, there were no differences in female and male participants’ scores in inner speech reflexivity modes and self-regulation stages. The results suggest several implications to enhance students’ self-regulation within the social context of educational settings.

Opis:
The present study explores the connection between the actual/ideal (A/I) and actual/ought (A/O) self-discrepancies and negative emotional states such as stress, anxiety and depression. Moreover, it seeks to understand the effects of potentially intervening variables, self-control //and self-consciousness, on the affect-discrepancy relationship. 638 participants (60% female, aged 18-55) participated in the study. They filled out questionnaires measuring actual/ideal self-discrepancy, actual/ought self-discrepancy, self-control, private/public self-consciousness and psychological distress (depression, anxiety and stress; DAS). The results revealed that both, A/O and A/I self-discrepancies, are positively associated with DAS but do not have a predictive value for them. However, depression, anxiety and stress are significantly predicted by low self-control and high personal self-consciousness. Also, the study confirms that self-control and self-consciousness moderate affect-discrepancy relationship: self-control is a significant moderator of the relationships between (1) A/I and A/O self-discrepancy and depression and (2) A/I and A/O self-discrepancy and stress. Also, public self-consciousness moderates the relationship between A/O self-discrepancy and stress. In this respect those who have high self-control and high self-consciousness are less likely to experience negative emotional reactions related to the discrepant self-constructs.

Internal sensations, especially organic ones, are not only the foundation of our consciousness of life and self but also an integral part of each feeling. This is probably the origin of the genuine affinity between feelings and consciousness of life and self, an affinity that manifests itself even in speech. Indeed, the ex- pression “sense of self” is more natural than saying “representing” or even “im- agining one’s self”. It is also easier and neater to talk in French about “sentiment du moi” than “representation du moi”; the expression “das Ichgefühl” is less grating than “die Ichvorstellung”, the latter being rather used to mean the con- ceived self as opposed to the self of which one is conscious all the time. The self is not a feeling, however, if only because there are no feelings that would be equally constant or, to be more precise, that would recur with equal constancy. Even so, we can say it is closer to emotive states than to any representation or mental image. [...]

Artefact, American Culture, Meta ction, Self-consciousness, grand narratives
Opis:
Kurt Vonnegut’s position that artists should be treasured as alarm systems and as biological agents of change comes most pertinent in his two great novels. The selected English novels of the past century – Cat’s Cradle (1963), Slaughterhouse Five (1969), and Breakfast of Champions (1973) – connect the world of fiction to the harsh realities of the world via creative metafictional strategies, making literature an alarm coated with the comforting lies ofstorytelling. It is metafi ction that enables Vonnegut to create different understandings of historical events by writing a kind of literature that combines facts and fiction. Defi ned as a kind of narrative that “self-consciously and systematically draws attention to its status as artefact” metafiction stands against the duplicitous “suspension of disbelief” that is simply an imitation and interpretation of presumed realities. As a postmodern mode of writing it opts for an undisguised narration that undermines not only the author’s univocal control over fiction but also challenges the established understanding of the ideas. Multidimensional display of events and thoughts by Vonnegut works in direction of metafiction to give readers a self-conscious awareness of what they read. Hiroshima bombing in 1946 and the destruction of Dresden in Germany by allied forces in World War II are the subjects of the selected novels respectively. In them Vonnegut presents a creative account in the form of playful fictions. The study aims to investigate how the novelist portrayed human mentality of the American culture by telling self-referentialstories that focus on two historical events and some prevailing cultural problems.

Opis:
Objectification in the workplace refers to relationships in which employees can be reduced to the status of objects. This phenomenon has deleterious consequences for health. In this study we examine the protective role of reflexivity, i.e. self-consciousness and team reflexivity. 98 employees answered an online questionnaire which measured objectification, self-consciousness, team reflexivity, mentalization and instrumentality/humanness. The results highlighted a moderation effect of private self-consciousness in the relations between objectification and its consequences. An elevation of self-consciousness is associated with a decrease in dementalization and is associated with an increase in instrumentality. Team reflexivity promotes a decrease in instrumentality and an elevation in humanness either directly or indirectly via the diminution of objectification. The two forms of reflexivity are therefore complementary when facing objectification in the workplace and its consequences. The question of the articulation of the self and co-regulation processes is discussed in connection with these results.

The article presents the results of theoretical analysis and empirical investigation of the relationship between self-attitude and attitude towards other people, including representatives of other nationalities. Self-attitude is viwed as a stable, emotionally charged of your own self. The interdependance of self-attitude indicators with the features of ethnic tolerance and the character of other individuals' attitude in complicated situations has been researched. Individuals with different self-image are shown to perceive their opponents just as they perceive their own personality. Perception and emotional attitude both to their own ethnic group and other ethnicities is closely related to the attitude of the individual to himself, and common factors in predisposition to criticism and condescension towards themselves and others.

Opis:
W niniejszym artykule zaprezentowano rozważania dotyczące procesów społecznej konstrukcji emocji wstydu. Szczególną uwagę autorka poświęciła cielesnemu wymiarowi doświadczenia tej emocji. Podjęła próbę ustalenia związków wstydu z twarzą, ciałem i płcią.
This paper presents considerations referring to processes of how shame is constructed socially. Particular attention has been paid to the corporal dimension of the experience of shame. The author has attempted to determine the relationship between the emotion of shame and face, body and sex roles. Shame has been described as the emotion of the face – the notion of “face” is understood metaphorically, as well as literally. Both the social nature of shame and its connection to self-consciousness made it possible to explain the connections between the feeling of shame and sex roles. On the basis of empirical analysis and theoretical considerations, the author concludes that women are more prone to experience shame than men. It is because of the role that the awareness of their own bodies, connected with the process of self-objectification, plays in how women experience these emotions.
